  • Want to grow zinnias? Let's talk about everything you need to know!
    sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ...
These were started from seed and transplanted out on April 7. Because zinnias like warm weather, this is several months from when we do a lot of other flowers, but they're looking good now as things have warmed up.
Zinnias are generally pretty easy to grow. We're trialing this new variety because it's supposed to hold up against powdery mildew which is something that shows up every year. That's if these can hold up through the hot weather we're about to get into!
One thing that you can do (just like we do with basil) is top them. By cutting off the end, you encourage your plants to bush out. This leads to more & longer branches and more blooms!
Like any cut flower, you want to harvest often. By cutting off the reproduction process, you save the plant energy that would have gone into creating seed. Instead, the plant wants to respond by making more flowers which are more opportunities to reproduce.
Speaking of energy, fertilizing can be really helpful. We start with a granular fertilizer when we plant them. We'll do a liquid fish emulsion a handful of times throughout the season as well.
Although this variety is supposed to be resistant to powdery mildew, that can affect a lot of summer crops, zinnias included. To combat this, you want to stay on top of pruning, just like you do with squash, tomatoes, and others. Pruning opens up airflow and gets rid of old or diseased parts of the plant. If you do get powdery mildew on your plants, be sure to prune them as soon as possible and throw that away. You also want to consider the factors WHY that happened in the first place.

Packets says ‘Simi Dwarf Pumila Mixed Colors’ the other says ‘cut and come again.’ But aren’t they all? Anywho!! They are awesome! The flowers last such a long time. They add pops of color in the garden and in my home as well!
