Great video! Love the common sense approach!
Thank you, Andrea
Vandoren does not expect there will be 10 good reeds. Therefore they make a case that holds only 6. That's my guess.
Their expectations are usually correct from personal experience haha. Thanks for watching, Jerry!
Homerun on all 5 points! I'd just add about the grooves (point 2) that, remember that cane (and all wood, for that matter) warps toward water. So trapping water between the thickest part of the reed and a non-porous, non-grooved surface exacerbates the convex warpage experienced almost always with commercial reeds. So 100% on the mark about the grooves, as well as the other 4 points.
Thanks, Chuck! Yes, I had a better explanation of why the grooves are important but decided to edit it out of the final cut to make it more concise. Thank you!
Awesome video, I hope to find a good reed one day
It is Sisyphean...
Hey Sam - great video! The D'Addario case that holds 8 reeds is a humidifying case and is designed to use their humidity packs - that's why there aren't any holes. The theory is that drying the reeds out completely each time shortens the life of the reed. As a D'Addario Artist I have some of these cases, but I tend to use the smaller non-humidifying reed clips that hold 4 reeds for all my saxes, clarinet and bass clarinet. The different colors they make are good for organizing which reeds are which as well.
Yeah, unfortunately I have had mixed success with the humidity packs. I like my reeds to dry out completely. I like the smaller ones since they are open for this reason, but I also just use those cases and leave them open
What do you think of the Ridenour ATG Against the Grain system? I don't do much work on my reeds but I will try to flatten the backs now n then.
I think it’s a good, simple, affordable system. With my experience, I didn’t notice any worthwhile gain for the time I had to put into adjusting the reeds, but if it works for you, great!
Sam: Good video as always. If you have the opportunity to watch Ed Joffe's interview with the principal of the Boston Sym. you will hear him state that he doesn't work on reeds because there is such demand on his time. He has a box that he throws reeds into that don't work into and may get to them at a later time.
Yep, that’s kind of how I feel about it. I’ve only ever been able to make a bad reed ok. Never an ok reed good, or a good reed great. Often a good reed bad 😂
What is your opinion on synthetic reeds?
Great video and podcasts!
Not a fan. I'll play on them when they produce as well as cane reeds, but they are pretty far off for me now.
Good recommendations! As for me I water my reeds before I saliva them, because I believe that there are some chemicals in saliva, which effect the cane. What do you think?)
I used water for the longest time but I found that my reeds just held the water and got too hard as a result, so I switched to just saliva and it works much better for me
Great tips! Love it! 👍🎼
My fav case is same as yours.
Thanks, Cathy! It’s my favorite at the moment, though one that fits 10 reeds would be even better!
@@TheCandidClarinetist I used them with cane and I still use them with Legere. The reed tips is what I get concerned with.
Great tips man, thank you! Greetings from Peru.
Thank you very much, Marco! Cheers.

Sam I am …
Reed cases , like hotdogs and Buns!
Always off in the numbers 🙄
Makes no sense!!!
“anywhere from $20-$30 each box, they’re really expensive”
oboe - that’s how much one reed costs
