      The best investment you can make is in a good mouthpiece! I’d suggest a Vandoren m13 Lyre. It’s the mouthpiece I used for the first 12 years of my life as a clarinetist

    My favorite reed was the Rue Lepic!!! It's tone quality was soo warm, and the articulations were very smooth, whereas the v12(I think) had the slightest muddy notes. I don't usually use Vandoren reeds because of how hard they are, but I'm looking forward to using those Rue Lepic reeds. It may also be just the camera, but I did notice a bit of air in the Rue Lepic. As a clarinet player, I do believe it is just the camera. Great work, and you're a fabulous clarinet player! Keep it up!

    From what you hear, it seems that the mouthpiece-reed combination is generating an inflexible, heavy and colorless sound. Those "undesirable" harmonics are the ones that would be missing to give it life and projection. Thank you for sharing your opinion

    • @TheCandidClarinetist
      @TheCandidClarinetist 5 місяців тому

      I disagree, but it’s simply a matter of sound preference. I certainly won’t claim to have the most colorful/flexible sound, but that’s what I sort of need to play in the orchestra the way that I prefer

    Thank you for taking us through this well-strategized warm-up routine. But what is up with the MIDI saxophone music? As a woodwind player, you should hang your head in shame for using this music for your video. Doesn’t exactly provide much inspiration for playing long tones, either.

    No.1 rule, play the most in demand instrument. Dump the violin, piano…….stick to something like the Oboe. Be a realist, the world of professional music is a small place. Then you grow up and realise that the banks won’t touch you when your applying for a mortgage because of your short term contract…….ah the hard reality starts to set in. So you end up teaching on crap money and trying to get by while maybe dreaming of a UA-cam channel, joining thousands of other music channels out there. Which is why my son is fully aware of the hard realities of being a professional musician, and will only ever do it as an interest.

    I know I’m very late for the party, but I couldn’t help but notice how the etude mindset is VERY different compared to here in Texas. Musicality almost doesn’t mean anything, it’s all about technique and sounding the most impressive. You almost outright get punished for attempting to be expressive, it’s preposterous, they only look for machines. I HATE it! It will only install bad habits in our state’s future musicians. If you didn’t sound like this guy in the link, you weren’t going to make all state haha. ua-cam.com/video/82IBi5r87HM/v-deo.html

    I play on a Vandoren B-45 mouthpiece and a Rovner ligature. I have used V-12 reeds for quite a lot of years. They are responsive and generally consistent. When I started using them, someone pointed out to me that the cane used in making Vandoren reeds was more dense than the cane in Rico reeds. At first they seemed hard to break in, but now I have no problems with them.

    Thank you for the video!! I have 56 v12 and traditional, and I feel the v12 and the traditional reeds sound better for the high notes. I don’t know if it’s only me but I find 56 easier to play but sounds a bit thin on the high note. I’m using Vandoren b45 mouthpiece and I’m playing 2.5 strength for 56, and 2.5/3 for v12 and traditional.

I watched your interview with Michael Wayne and am curious if you play the twelfths straight out of the case or if you get the instrument very warm or somewhere in between. Thank you!

  • @ClarinetEnthusiast
    @ClarinetEnthusiast Рік тому

    This video seems to highlight the difference in the warmth of the reeds especially well. I feel like a lot of videos have recordings where they all sound pretty much the same and then you hear all the sudden from the player that “oh this reed was so much brighter than this reed, and this reeds articulation suck” etc, and you’re left quite confused. I like to think that this is the difference an audience member would hear, for when I play I just think I sound like garbage lol. Great video though! I have recently been playing on 56 with my BD5 mouthpiece and I think I’m getting good results!
