My favorite pre VH album has always been Standing Hampton. VOA I remember buying new at the cedar hills record store in Jacksonville Florida. It’s good. Not Standing level but good
Best of all is Swept Away, funny how this almost feels like a song that would have fit on the HSAS-record. Overall a solid rocking album with locker-room lyrics.
This is definitely my favorite of Sammy's pre van Halen albums first of all its produced by Ted Templeman and he brings out the best of both Sammy and his band and the songs the killer triple punch of i cant drive 55, swept away and rock is in my blood to kick off side one and to me one of his best album closers in burning down the city a fantastic album
Excellent show, gentlemen! This is one of my faves, although it’s not a perfect album by any stretch of the imagination. As someone stated, it kind of peters out. I’m pretty sure l bought Standing Hampton, from Columbia Music Club - along with some Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. - first. For some reason, l never bought Three Lock Box until I was working in the retail record store a few years later. I then definitely bought VOA as my second Sammy album. Next thing l knew, he replaced DLR on VH! How unusual. It shoulda been Patty Smyth, but she was preggo at the time and couldn’t do it. Plus, the brothers chain smoking ways wouldn’t have been swell for her unborn child. And she’s a Noo Yawka, like me, and VH were based on the west coast. At least we got her mint self-titled solo debut record a few years later. Oh well, C’est la vie. I’m listening to Sam’s VOA album 💿 as I type my rambling comment now. Back in the day, I’d play the first six songs on my vinyl and then always skipped the last two tunes. Funny what one remembers, eh? I really have to get back to my notes for my show with bicyclelegs tomorrow. I often just randomly insert Patty Smyth into comments ,because she is awesome ! but here I can do it due to the VH connection lol...I may just list the tracks from Never Enough as my top 10 of 1987 when Grant gets to that year...As for VOA,I think it's his worst since 1978.. 2 Sides Of Love,Swept Away and 55 are good, but I got accustomed to great after the previous 3 albums.
Listened to HSAS recently and find that My Hometown is weird and wonky. The lyrics don't match the song, but I dig the rest. Animation and Giza have always been my favorites on that album.
@@recklessfable8292 I think they should've replaced He'll Understand or Hot N Dirty with Since You Came from the Westwood/MTV soundboard but I really liked the rest of the LP, more than VOA.
I like the Lita Ford version of Rock is in my blood more. This album like St Machine and Carnal is severely overpraised IMO..2 Sides,Swept Away,55 are good, the rest aren't.
I love Swept Away! Man that's such a cool song and my favourite form the album.
Hi Tim and Mike… great discussion! Sept Away and Rock is In My Blood have always been two of my favourites from this album. Thank you. Chez
The music video for “VOA” did receive a decent amount of airplay on MTV but obviously not anywhere the heavy rotation that “I Can’t Drive 55” did

Yep, Hampton is my favorite album he was part of including 5150 and Montrose.
Thanks for another great assessment!

Imagine if side 2 was Missing You, Animation, Valley Of Kings, My Hometown. That would've been quite an album. Unfortunately it wasn't lol
Wow yeah, strong album there.
