    FYI, you don’t necessarily need an expensive heating element, incandescent light bulbs will do, with the benefit you can see if they are working at a glance, they are dirt cheap so you fit 2 so if one blows you are ok. I have 2 x 60W bulbs. Only 5% of the bulbs power is light, the rest is heat. Mines got no fans and works ok. I put the sensor in the brew, inside a sterilised thermowell tube, and convection sorts everything out fine

    How many Litres was that fridge? I would recomend drilling holes in sides first, If you strike a gas line chuck it out no need to waste more time on it. Maybe through the door where there deffinantly aren't any gas lines might be a a better idea?

    Excellent video thank you... Do you put the temp probe in the wort or just leave it in the fridge?

    All of the ones I have looked at give the volume in litres not internal dimensions...

    nice work. just on the pc fans, when I made mine I noticed that when flush up against a wall, they hardly blew any air. moving them about 5cm out gave them a chance to pull air through the fans. I ended up mounting mine using twist wire to the bottom of a shelf. are your fans getting good air flow?

    • @MartinMaat
      @MartinMaat 10 місяців тому

      By the looks of it he does have the fans on some short studs, leaving a bit of room to pull or push air through. It doesn't look like much though I agree. I guess he does not want to lose more cabinet space by setting off the fans any further.
      I have one in a corner of the "ceiling", fixed with just the tips of long screws into the top of the cabinet. This works quite well, it does not take any of the width away and still leaves room for the air lock which will be the highest point somewhere in the middle.
      In his case, instead of a ton of holes all over the place which do not strike me as terribly effective, I would have made two larger holes on each side and fit a fan under one of them. Then you force-circulate the heated air directly through the cabinet and the fan is completely out of the way.

    If anyone else is trying to do this, don't mess with the area around the condensation drain at the back wall of these types of fridges. I tried to widen the hole slightly to get the heater wire through it and cracked the system... Fridge gone, mk2 will have to copy tom, with a hole to the side of the fridge

    Does your STC have an SSR that it is using to handle the load? Or is it ok directly wired? (yeah - this is a year later, but whatever)

    Hi Tom, just wondering what sort of board it was that you made the shelf with? Looks waterproof? Just about to convert a fridge for fermenting and want to get the right material for the job.

    • @MartinMaat
      @MartinMaat 10 місяців тому

      It looks like MDF. As long as it isn't splashed with condensation it should be fine.

    OMG. U screwed up such a good fridge box (literally). I believe most of the fridges has a hole for condensation, it's hard to be sure with this quality but i think u have one right on the bottom in the middle. U could connect heater and put fires through that hole, no need to drill it. Other thing i can't understand is position of coolers. They just stay in front of each other, what you expect they gonna do? In order to circulate air i would put 2 under that shelve that u chop out with IN derection on heater. That would pull out air from cooler and blow it on heater and heated air would come out through holes in UP direction. Also don't understand that huge ugly box with control. WHY? To turn on and off heater u need termoregulator. There is lot of very cheap and functional termoregulators with displays and stuff. You disassemble the fridge door, make a nice sqareshape cut in it for display and carefully put connection to heater in the bottom left corner of the door, or up corner if u wish. So all u gonna need is plug fridge to power and all thermal control u can do on display right on the fridge door. Looks neat and mobile. U can put that fridge anywhere u want without any additional pain in the ass.
