Another reason why archaeologists did not dig the imperial tomb is that they believe that the current technology is not enough to protect all unearthed cultural relics from the influence of the imperial tomb. Like the Terra Cotta Warriors, they were all colored when they were unearthed, but because of the oxidation of pigments, they soon became the current color. This is a regrettable thing. And another fun fact is the Terra Cotta Warriors excavated now are only a small part. Archaeologists estimate that it may take 700 years to complete the excavation and restoration of the entire Terra Cotta Warriors
One technical comment: With the technology of the Qin dynasty thousands of years ago. Some of the warriors were colorful before they had been discovered. After the oxygen came into the ceramics skin, it appeared to grey color. You can imagine the high technology of the colorful ceramics in China 2000 years ago! They are amazing and fantastic ! 🎉🎉🎉 Maybe this is the amazing China which can tell us! Enjoy your journey in China! Hope you can explore more fantastic cultures of China! 🎉🎉🎉
Archeologists actually discovered fingerprints on some of the terracotta warriors and it belonged to the sculptors thousands of years ago. It is truly mind blowing. Xi’an is my hometown and I’m glad you have having fun there!
One theory is that the emperor asked the families of the fallen soldiers to build the statues for him to accompany him in the afterlife, because they found names on the pedestals of the warriors and they are all different with no repeat (so it's unlikely to be the ones of the sculptors). Also the hair, face and clothes are made with such details, so the archeologists believed that they were made by people who really cared about them.
I am not sure that the emperor "asked" but it is more likely an Imperial decree made. Qin Shih-huang was not recorded as a polite and humble man who asked for things to be done for him.
@@George123-bv7xqYeah it's definitely possible but there's quite a lot of leaders/generals in Chinese history who can be cruel in nature but were really nice to the soldiers they fought with and who died for them, that's how they demand so much respect in the military. However, nobody can know for sure because it's been over 2000 years.
@@skevx0 True - it's been over 2,000 years but historical records have indicated that the emperor was pretty much of a tyrant who faced several assassinations attempts on his life - which was one of the reasons his empire fell apart very soon after his death. In fact, as history has recorded, when he died during one of his trips to survey the country, his death was hidden from being known. Piled up fishes were used to mask the smell of his corpse in the carriage on the long road journey back to the palace in Xi'an as no one dared be revealed that the emperor was dead for fear of a rebellion. No, he wasn't a very "nice" guy but he did get a lot of things done in unifying the country, standardizing weights and measures and writing, standardized the currency, established a code of law, building the Great Wall (a part of it anyway) and established the meritocratic system of administration of government, advancement in engineering and weapon technology and more - all within a relatively short period of time. On the other end of the scale, he DID appear to have looked after his soldiers and their families by way of making sure they are paid, well fed and well-armed, and disciplined with the most modern and best made weapons to date. That's what happens when you have authoritarians and dictators in charge - they do tend to get things accomplished on a grand scale. However, I still doubt that he "asked" the soldiers "nicely" somehow.
@@George123-bv7xq Documents from that time were found in the tomb of a low level official of Qin Dynasty(The Chinese burial objects are usually the tomb owner’s favorite things during his lifetime) were only his work records, such as case analyses, laws, reward and punishment systems, etc., even include prohibiting hunting during the breeding season of animals. Nothing show Qin Shihuang was a tyrant. On the contrary, the Qin Dynasty was a very orderly society ruled by law. I believe more in the 20-year work note of Qin officials who loved his job than history written by the people who overthrew the Qin Dynasty.
They are not distracted by radio, television, the internet and mobile phones back then and have the time needed to use their skills in craftsmanship - besides which, the emperor would probably wanted nothing but the very best depiction of realistic beings to accompany him into the afterlife - or he'd have their heads.
Qin Shi Huang was not the first emperor in Chinese history, but the first emperor to achieve great unification. Just like how many countries in Europe were fighting against each other, and then a person emerged who defeated all countries and unified the entire European region into one country. Since then, emperors have all set this goal, which is why no one in the Chinese nation wants to split up and become independent. They all maintain the idea of world unity, and the dynasty after Qin is Han - a super empire that is even stronger than Qin, Perhaps it was the most powerful human civilization in the world at that time, and in the later period of the Han Dynasty, many people appeared in various places who wanted to replace the Han Dynasty and establish their own new empire. Among them, three forces were the most powerful, which is the famous Three Kingdoms period in history. Figures such as Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Lv Bu came from this period.
It depends on how you understand the word 'experor'. After all in Chinese we call the governers of Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties '王', like '周文王', which means kings in English.
The most important thing about these warriors is no two warriors are identical, which means there were real warriors at that time and were made out one by one.

Excellent video, Steve and Ivana. The first emperor's life and his personalities were also amazing (smart, ambitious and visionary). He conquered and unified China during the War States period, (475-221 BCE), by defeating the six or more small feuding Chinese kingdoms in 221 BCE. I strongly recommend watching the Song of Everlasting Sorrow(Chang hen ge ),which tells the love story between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Yang Yuhuan. Both the special effects and the stage are stunning! The place to watch the Everlasting Regret Song is Lishan Mountain, next to the Terra Cotta Warriors.
They were indeed manufactured thousands of years ago, via the production line, mass production, that is, but still uniquely sculptured for various parts so that all the faces of the warriors are different as individuals, real soldiers. There were remnants of the production line, for example, with matching numbers of tags of different parts in the production line.

No, they know the toxicity and also know that it has a function of preventing corpses from rotting. The mercury in the pill you mentioned is just an impurity carried in various minerals, which is accidentally ingested. People who consume the pill may not even know that it contains mercury, which is also the reason why toxicity only appears for a long time. If they really don't understand toxicity, why supplement with trace amounts of mercury in pills? Mercury can be consumed as drinking water directly.
PS: Over 4000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty, ancient tombs in China had already been treated with mercury and cinnabar for preservation. Even when jade artifacts were excavated at that time, there were still a large number of mercury patterns on them
The army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang was replicated based on the actual army, including the arrangement of burial positions. At that time, this army could defeat the armies of all other countries around the world. Each weapon used by this army has a few millimeters of error, and each part has the names of craftsmen, supervisors, and purchasers. If any defective weapons are found, they will be held accountable from top to bottom, including the name of Prime Minister Lv Buwei at the time.At the same time, there is no more advanced technology available worldwide.
@@jrwkd6114 It is the mercury salts that are dangerous as they are more easily absorbed into the body. Mercury by itself in its pure form can be ingested and passed through the alimentary canal easily with little deleterious effects.

As a 3rd generation Chinese living in Malaysia, I received a full systematic Chinese education, one thing about this is Qin Shi Huang is never forgotten by us, he is deemed as 千古一帝, meaning The Greatest Emperor of All, even after thousands of years passed, we as Chinese are so much grateful and admire his accomplishment on uniting the Warring States into one China, which establish the very fundamental country til today.
Did you go to Li Shan Garden after visiting these main halls? That is where the empire was buried and more relics were discovered there. There are 2 or 3 more new halls over there and they moved a lot of precious and famous relics to those new halls to attract tourists and it is free (should be included in the fee you paid)! You can take the official shuttle bus at the car park near the main entrance and spend another few hours exploring more fascinating history. For those who is going to visit the warriors, highly recommend it, don't miss out!
My wife is Chinese we went to see the warriors with a tour group totally fantastic . We went out of season so in the halls overlooking the pits there were very few people so i was able to take loads of photos
The scary part of Emperor Qin's tomb is that: 1. it's never been excavated or even broken into, so high possibility to discover some very well-preserved relics (by well-preserved I mean we can possibly see the flesh of the emperor still intact just like Xin Zhui in Mawangdui: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xin_Zhui#:~:text=Xin%20Zhui%27s%20body%20was%20remarkably,being%20found%20in%20her%20veins. ) 2. there is a recorded high concentration level of mercury vapor above the tomb, which strengthen the claim of a pool of mercury inside the tomb. 3. the place is extremely huge! The entire core of the mausoleum is roughly 55 times the size of everything you see in this video. The Terracotta Army archeological size is tiny compared to it. It's like a palace underground.
In North Malaysia, they left remnants of Hindu/ Buddhist relics to rot in the open. Just north of Penang. They could have dismantled, rebuild and placed these buildings in one safe site for visitors to admire.
Facts : The terracotta army was built to be placed inside the tomb of the first emperor of China who built the great wall in China ,his tomb was huge and was never completely opened or discovered. From the history book of China thousands of years ago,it stated that his tomb was designed in such a way that there were traps there: sharp arrows will shoot if anyone dared to approach the tomb, poison material like mercury abounds, the scientist nowadays used scientific method to check on the soil surrounding the tomb, did confirm that the mercury level is abnormally high!
They said if you find your face similar to one of the Terracotta warriors, it means you are a time traveller some day in future and went back to Qin Dynasty.

Thanks for another entertaining video!
When I visited years ago there was only Pit 1. Thank you for sharing.
OMG I’m becoming a huge fan! Waiting for your video everyday now😂
Have to visit the museum in XiAn, best in the world. It is also free , so big have to arrive early in the morning.
Wow !!! So cool.. Thanks for sharing this video🙏
thanks for your Wonderful explanation
Amazing, definitely a bucket place travel destination for me! great video
AMAZING CHINA😊
They were indeed manufactured thousands of years ago, via the production line, mass production, that is, but still uniquely sculptured for various parts so that all the faces of the warriors are different as individuals, real soldiers. There were remnants of the production line, for example, with matching numbers of tags of different parts in the production line.
Another great piece of video! We were there 5 years ago but unable to see close enough! You close shots are remarkable! 🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍
Almost all of them were later manually bonded and restored, with only one remaining intact when unearthed
oh no u missed the tomb museums! your ticket includes a park which the tomb is located (a hill) and there are more exhibitions next to the tomb. free shuttle buses are provided 😂 i guess a lot ppl doesnt know this is part of the terrocata warriors museum😢
Oh, this is a shame!
Are visitors not provided with site maps?
Wow, when my wife and I visited there it was 45 degrees, tough being a tourist in those temperatures. Lovely videos you have been making from China.
We were there in 2011 and I can see that a lot has changed! It was great already in 2011. It must be much better now.
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the video, so interesting and educating...if you love it here, you may also be interested in SanXingDui, MoGaoKu, or XiHouDu, all of these will take you back in history.....
they knew about mercury back then, but not the toxicity. It was consumed by the emperor as an elixir of life
No, they know the toxicity and also know that it has a function of preventing corpses from rotting.
THANK YOU GUYS, FOR SHOWING THE CHINESE HISTORY TO THE WORLD. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL SO I SUBSCRIBED IT TODAY!!
went there few years ago and remembered nothing abt the history, thanks to ur gret video now I feel like learning it all again and didn't waste my ticket😄
They are now brown as you said but they were actually colored beautifully as the glazes or paints have worn off over time. Some painted sculptures were found and they were reenacted.
始皇帝。是华夏民族真正意义上的第一个皇帝。
Amazing! Definitely will visit that place. I also heard that every soldier has a different facial expression and different uniform.
Hmmm, I thought their two hour visit was too short!
They missed out the Tomb.
Steve seems to love museums and his enthusiasm and excitement at the site shows through for him to make this brilliant video! 😀😀😀
The workers actually found a finger print on one of the warriors. 🎉🎉🎉
My wife is Chinese we went to see the warriors with a tour group totally fantastic . We went out of season so in the halls overlooking the pits there were very few people so i was able to take loads of photos
The scary part of Emperor Qin's tomb is that:
1. it's never been excavated or even broken into, so high possibility to discover some very well-preserved relics (by well-preserved I mean we can possibly see the flesh of the emperor still intact just like Xin Zhui in Mawangdui:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xin_Zhui#:~:text=Xin%20Zhui%27s%20body%20was%20remarkably,being%20found%20in%20her%20veins. )
2. there is a recorded high concentration level of mercury vapor above the tomb, which strengthen the claim of a pool of mercury inside the tomb.
3. the place is extremely huge! The entire core of the mausoleum is roughly 55 times the size of everything you see in this video. The Terracotta Army archeological size is tiny compared to it. It's like a palace underground.
Just think of all the inspiration for video games that it could give us! But perhaps some things are best left sacred.
Thank you for bringing us along with your adventures. ❤
I have been there once, very crowded. very worth visiting!
Chinese history is magnificent, love to explore china one day.
6 stars video! Makes me want to visit Xi'An to see the terracotta warriors.
Learnt something new, thanks to the both of you. I’ve always thought it’s only a single pit. Hope I’ll get to see it one day
In North Malaysia, they left remnants of Hindu/ Buddhist relics to rot in the open. Just north of Penang. They could have dismantled, rebuild and placed these buildings in one safe site for visitors to admire.
U guys can go to Qianling , the grave of the only Female Emperor Wu Zetian .
That GPS guide is cool!
建议去成都三星堆,也很赞(san xing dui)
那是另一种震撼
@@jxmai7687 对,看了感觉古代人的智慧太高了…怕我自己给祖宗丢脸…好几千年过去了还没长多少智慧😂

I loved this so much
You guys make a great team and your super cute! Love your content! ❤
Your narative is great
Facts : The terracotta army was built to be placed inside the tomb of the first emperor of China who built the great wall in China ,his tomb was huge and was never completely opened or discovered.
Amazing place! Would love to visit, on the bucket list!
Amazing video. Thank you.
great video your fan from China welcome
They said if you find your face similar to one of the Terracotta warriors, it means you are a time traveller some day in future and went back to Qin Dynasty.
It's majestic
The Terracotta Warriors of Qin Shihuang is so amazing.Steve really likes history.Look forward to more video creations from you. May you have more fans and become more successful.Love from the local in China. The translation may not be accurate. I hope you understand what I mean.
It's such a pity that you missed the other part of the museum: Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, where you can see the Qin bronze chariot which is the discovered in the Maysoleum nearby. The tickets you bought are the combination for both two museums. There's free bus for transportation or you can walk by, not too far away.
