See What Happens When You Add Epsom Salt to Your Plants

- Epsom-salt is a natural mineral that was first discovered in Epsom, England. People typically use Epsom-salt in the bathroom to relieve aches and pains or internally as a laxative, but it is also a garden additive that expert gardeners swear by. It can help you produce lush, healthy plants, flowers and trees.
Here Are 7-Amazing Reasons to use Epsom-salt in your garden.
1.Make fruit Sweeter.
Epsom-salt, when added to trees, bushes and vines that produce fruit, boosts the chlorophyll inside the plant. When plants have more chlorophyll, they have more energy, when they have more energy, they produce more sugar. More-sugar means sweeter fruit for you to enjoy.
2.Tree stump remover.
Tree stump removal can be costly, but if you don't have the money to get a stump removed, let Epsom-salt come to your rescue. Simply drill few holes into the stump and fill in the holes with Epsom-salt. In weeks, the stump will begin rotting.
3.Epsom-salt increases Nutrient Absorption.
Many commercial fertilizers add magnesium to help plant roots take up vital nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur.) For those using all organic materials to feed their gardens, adding Epsom-salt to soil will improve absorption naturally, eliminating the need for processed chemical-fertilizers.
4.Lush lawn fertilizer.
If your lawn isn't lush and beautiful, it probably needs a little magnesium in its life. To perk-up grass, add 3-pounds of Epsom-salt to every 1,250 square feet of grass and then water your-lawn.
5.Beautiful blooming roses
Ever wonder why your neighbor’s rose bushes are fuller than yours and sport so many more blossoms? It is highly likely that the answer is Epsom-salt. Epsom-salt to rose bushes encourages them to produce larger flowers with darker, deeper colors. To incorporate Epsom-salt to your rose bush's diet, add it at the time of planting and when flowers are in bloom.
6.Keep leaves green
Plants that aren’t getting enough magnesium can be identified by their yellowing leaves. This is because magnesium is an essential component in the production of chlorophyll. Try sprinkling Epsom-salt around your plants to achieve healthier foliage. About 1-tablespoon per 12-inches of height once a month will benefit the plants in your vegetable-garden, as well as any trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses you want to green-up.
And 7. Produce abundant nightshades.
Many people enjoy growing plants from the nightshade family such as peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes. All nightshades need a lot of magnesium, so that they produce greater yields. Epsom-salt also helps improve the flavor of nightshades. To ensure the nightshades you grow in your home garden are abundant and tasty.
add 1-tablespoon of Epsom-salt to your peppers and tomatoes by sprinkling it around the base of the plant. If you want the salt to dissolve more-quickly, add it to a gallon of water and water the plants with the mixture. You should continue to add the Epsom-salt to your plants every 2-weeks.

It's crazy that epsom salt when put into a tree will begin rotting the tree and yet somehow putting it around the base of the tree it's good for it? Crazy! Good info though in glad I saw this!
I only use a TINY amount (1/4 of a teaspoon) around the top of the soil and I don't wet it. The crystals dissolve over time.
I also use seaweed fertilizer first. Then do the Epsoms the next day. Only once every few months. I grow rare indoor plants!
One of my cucumber plants leaves were looking light, light green compared to the one next to it. I gave it a tablespoon of Epsom salt and now it is a beautiful green. I also have put this around my tomato plants, zucchini and squash plants . In addition, I have a Schefflera that is in a pot and little over 6 feet tall and I put Epsom salt on it also to help with this 96° weather we have had for the last few days. I have been using Epsom salt for about 3-4 years now.
I used it on ferns that I dug up in the woods and they grew like crazy and extremely green. The ferns didn't look very good when we dug them up, but I saw a video about using it on Boston ferns bought from a nursery and they tripled in size following their directions. I don't know about the garden but willing to give it a try.
Fact: moderately used, magnesium sulphate salt blooms many garden into Eden
hey just wanted to give friendly advice since your video fails to give important information.
epsom salt (magnesium) and calcium go hand in hand. Together they compete with potassium for nutrition. If you give too mich epsom salt it will cut off any intake for potassium thus turning leaves yellow and worst case scenario dies. I’ve followed your advice and almost killed my fig tree. you only need a little, it goes a long way, not no tablespoon for every fooot of growth
Brilliant info.. on Epsom salt
Thank you so much for these excellent tips. Have never used Epsom salts. Will use regularly now as I have many plants thet show signs of needing the magnesium.
I started my garden late in the season and put in the starts right before a spate of 100+ degree weather. I thought my peppers weren't going to make it. They looked like they were going backward developmentally.
I sprinkled a generous tablespoon of Epsom salts around the base of each of my pepper and tomato plants one evening, then watered it in. The next morning there was a tremendous difference! The plants were darker in color and, for the first time, I knew they were going to make it. Some now have peppers (or tomatoes) starting. I will sprinkle more epsom salts on them again soon!
Thanks for the tip! My pepper plants are not looking great so will try this.

What the heck are you and John Smith trying to convey?
No, I don't grow mj.
I have zukes, tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, eggplant, basil, and green beans. I have a lot of different kinds of tomatoes and peppers.
AND, I'm going to be applying another dose of Epsom salts because it's supposed to be 105 degrees F here this weekend.
I also use Fermented Plant Juice you can google. I use purslane to make mine because it's a volunteer in my garden.
Pita M great idea
I been doing foliar feeding with Epsom salt. Magnesium gets absorbed through the leaves. Just mix it with water and put it in a sprayer the spray the leaves. I do everything, roses, bulb flowers, tomatoes. Had some 3 foot tall green chili plants.
How much is good to add to water
@@Alicia-gj2nl about 1 cup per 5 gallons
Peppers of all vegetables love it the most. Next year try burying a book of red tipped matches about 2 inches below bottom of pepper plant and continue to foliar spray with Epsom and see what happens. Biggest peppers you will ever see.
Thank you for the information. Many people who talk down this method probably work for some synthetic company and hate the idea of anything natural or organic. But if it works it works. If it doesn't, i would still try another natural method.
From this channel, I have learned that chucking tea bags, banana peels, egg shells, and epsom salt into my garden, is a good thing.
Gosh I had no idea Epsom salt was good for plants- I was googling tea leaves for roses, and saw a picture of a guy holding up an Epsom salt bag, and I decided to check it out - WOW - Now I shall help my old evergreen tree feel young again. THANKS!!
I use Epsom Salts around my lemon and lime trees 👌
Here in Cali, we use it in our indoor, organic "medicinal" gardens 😎
My mother and grandmother always used Epsom salt on their gardens and they always had healthy and productive plants in their gardens.

Thanks for the info each time I soak in epson salts bath I will recycle water into garden I know it might sound gross, I hate wasting water
Epson salt good for health??
Just be careful....too much Epsom salts in your bath may increase your blood pressure. Happened twice for me before I realized what was causing it.
@@samiahmad2227 I think it’s for detox. Also, a friend was using it for gallbladder support.
One problem, if you use to much you can lock up other nutrients in the soil, best to be careful,,less is more sometimes!

Very nice beautiful idea to produce more fruits 👌👍
Had some squash plants in pots, they looked terrible, as the ones in the ground were thriving. My brother said epsom salt, added a couple TBLS and with a 24 hours they percked right up. Wish I had taken before and after pictures, what a difference. Now I add it to every plant.
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium and sulfur are essential elements for plants, and people too.

@Weaver Cattle Company Good info. Yup, I sometimes use epsom salt to bump my ph a little down. Berries of some kinds like it. Magnesium is a great helper/ facilitator but only need small amounts. I may be mistaken but I think there is some interplay with magnesium and calcium as well. Not well versed, but learning. Thanks for the info.

I have been an ornamental gardener for 40 years and an orchid grower for 10 years and just in the last few years learned from older growers the benefit of adding epsom-salt to the soil or adding a pinch per gallon of fertilized water for my orchids makes a noticeable difference. It increases the amount of flowers and intensifies their color. It also increases the amount of fruiting on tomato plants if the temperature stays below 92 degrees. Tomato flowers will not set fruit above that temperature.

Alfalfa seed sprinkled into hole before planting trees, shrubs and bushes is a very useful nutrient boost as well🌼
I grow sprouts and micro greens indoors year round and I use this every time I water and they grow great 😎🇨🇦

Here in Kenya east Africa, most oranges, lemons, etc are imported, as the local ones are never sweet enough. It seems that magnesium is absent in the soil in many places here, and needs Epsom salt to be added. I got this advice some years ago, and began spraying the Epsom salts, and behold my oranges became every bit as good and sweet as those from South Africa or Egypt. Try it and see!
John Njoroge
I'm in Australia. My mandarins are usually a bit sour & not as sweet as they should be.
Your comment about your oranges reminded me to try Epson salts on the mandarin tree when watering next. Thank you. 😊
Hi !
Great tip !
Going to give it a try.
Now, I have a question.
Will using this technique on tomatoes work with the same results ?
I know that tomatoes by nature have a different nutritional requirement than plants from other families.
Will increase the chance of blossom-end rot, due to it competing with calcium in root uptake. See my last video
Tomatoes plants are particularly high in magnesium. They love it more than most other plants
@@IrishChippy that's why I use burnt eggshell soaked in vinegar to add to Epsom salt mixture before feeding. They go hand in hand in nutrient uptake. Magnesium by itself can cause nutrient lockout.
Neat video but a little more info on ratios would be beneficial. I'm thinking there has to be a narrow margin between too little and too much. Still interested in incorporating it into my garden I'm in southern Arizona if anyone has experience in our unique dirt would love some feedback
From my research into companion-planting, I have discovered that every variety of plant has a particular role to play. If a variety of weed is growing exceptionally well, it is because Nature is trying to improve the soil! If one identifies the role of a particular weed, one can put it out of a job by applying that particular element. African lovegrass is a massive problem in the nutrient-deficient soils of Western Australia, but by watering it with Epsom salts, I am eradicating if from my property while improving the soil for other plants. Other weeds are being killed by the application of other naturally occurring elements.
The more I observe year to year, the more I believe you are correct. Nature is amazing and complicated, but if you are able to take the time and observe, study, and use what you learn, it seems to become easier to understand and see how it all fits together.
@@bbtruth2161 no till natural farming for life! We get life from life.....living, thriving soil, teaming with microbiology, versus dead food produced from dead, depleted, compacted dirt that has no biology in it. how often do you apply it because using it too often can stop plant growth or even kill the plant.
I have always used Epsom on all my plants and grass that has patches ...I dont every use miracle grow Epsom salt is my go to for growing everything bigger and better and also coffee grinds
Greatly overstated, probably written by a company selling ES. If your soil is not deficient it does not need it and too much can throw chemicals in the soil out of balance. As far as helping a stump rot quicker, it might reduce the time to rot from 15 years to 14 years or it might increase the rot time as many chemicals do by killing the fungus and bacteria that rot the wood.
It's really something how Epsom salt Nutures & Grows Plants; but will ROT a Tree stump.

Thats exactly my thought wen i heard her say so....here i am cumin to post that same comment only to find u said it for me...lol
When you over salt anything... Yeah it will kill it. All about dosage. Hope that helps.
I have put Epson salt around my Azalea bushes for years and it does great for them, I had two azaleas and two other evergreens that look bad and the Epson salt brought out more leaves. I have used it around mine shrubs for years.
I've taken out a number of stumps with epsom salt. It doesn't happen nearly as fast as implied, but it does work and it's not synthetic or toxic.
This is magnificent indeed.thanx for free lessons
epson salt is magnesium sulfate. Chlorophyll requires magnesium. And sulfur is a micronutrient in plants. I can imagine in soil that is deficient in Mg or S, the addition of epson salt would be beneficial.
Nick L ... My soil test listed magnesium as a trace element and hardly ever found to be deficient.?? Most of the "test" won't hold up in real experiences.

In the shops you can find many kind of 'teas' in different fruity aromas which brews has nothing to do with the tea plant as such, but they still called teas. I reckon it is the same with anything that has a consistency of a salt. By the way, I've used Epson salt on my plants but sadly I didn't see any miracle happened...(I'm not a chemist or gardener, I just like to look after my little garden)
For those who had success with epsom salts, do you use that instead of regular fertilizers or so you do both?
I only use Epson Salt once a month.
I alternate, bi weekly, with CalMag in my organic container garden
The tree stump removal did not work for me, and I drilled lots and lots of big, deep holes that were filled with E.S.. Well explained. Sweet voice and excellent diction.
Do you think this would work on my dying yucca plant ?
For those who have asked about what it is and where to get:
Epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate. No it is not sodium salt, so it won't hurt your garden.
It is available in most department stores in the U.S., in the health section. I don't know if it is available in India or not.
Any clue as to if lavender scented epsom salt would still be safe?
For roses year long I make sure to cut off the roses that are dying. I don’t know about gardening but Especially in the summer I get around 30 roses in a small 3ft bush! Now I’ll try the rosin salt!
A lot of people seem to think table salt is a decent substitute. Please don't put table salt in your garden. It will kill everything.
True, Epsom salt isn't really salt. It's called that because it resembles salt crystals.

Hi thanks for the tip
Nigari works wonders to the plants too! Here, in Croatia, Epsom salt is very expensive. Those from the health care probably buy big packages from Amazon or ebay and then they re-package them into the small boxes of 5 grams and sell it almost like the gold, it costs almost 2 euros. It says how far and deep they fell already. Nigari is not cheap but is definitely cheaper than the Epsom salt, at least, here.
How can Epsom salt help your produce grow but make a tree stump rot?
It's the differnce between a living thing & a dead thing. Ie; it's complicated.
Concentration
Live trees attract and use beneficial bacteria & fungi. Dead trees attract almost the same as live plants, but the live plants use them to break down organic material in the soil to get nutrients.
That's the difference.
Exactly! 🤔
How nice would it be if the anchor tells side by side from where the suggested items will be available and whether it has some other name
I learned that epsom salt is good for tree roots, but it confuses me to hear that you can get rid of a tree stump by drilling holes and pouring epsom salt into the holes, which causes the stump to rot. It sounds contradictory. I'm getting dizzy.BTW, if you can stand the seriously bad taste, epsom salt is a very effective laxative. But don''t plan on going out for awhile, and keep some reading matter in the bathroom to pass the time. lolol
It sounds like you are overdosing.1/4 -1/2 teaspoon into a cup of tea or coffee will do the trick ,gently. Also good for cramps.

If you have a hard time with ants mix 1 part Boron or Borax to 9 parts sugar. I use "20 Mule Team" Borax found in the laundry soap section. If you mix it to liquid fill bottle or milk caps with he solution and add a cotton ball to the cap. Use about a quart when using 1 teaspoon borax to 9 sugar. In this dilution they cannot detect the Borax and when they eat it and take it back to the nest it kills the queen and larvae. If tou use too much Borax thames won't go near it because they can smell it.
