Watched the whole series on drywall and Chad, you are a hero. “Pressure on the toe, nice and tight, no sanding”. LOVE this guy. Thanks so much for the video.
The skill is in the details you provided. After watching a couple of times the difference in my efforts are night & day. My wife thinks I hired somebody else to tape & mud while she was out. Thanks so much Chad!
Awesome job. I like these videos the best because you describe "how to do it" briefly but focus more on the application. You spend a lot of time on doing the actual work and its nice to see that. A lot of other videos talk a lot about how to do it but don't spend enough time showing us how to do it.
Best video series on drywall muddying and taping. Just did my first big project and followed all your steps in the correct order. All is going flawlessly. A real confidence builder
This is an EXCELLENT series of videos I have learned a lot from! I would still hire a professional to finish my basement but I can see me attempting these techniques to a small application like minor drywall patching in my laundry room. These videos have made me realize so many things I have not thought about before. Thanks!
I do this work about 25 years. I can testify that Chad is very good and knows how to explain. There is meny workers who don't know "what and how" but simply doing. I use to work this old fashion way, but going to buy fatboy box to speed up a little. So, in conclusion: Chad is the guy I would like to work with. Greetings guys and keep going! Good job!
Not use to using the hawk and trowel so much, but I gave it a try yesterday,I had my mud to thin seems, cause when I scraped the mix onto my trowel my knuckles got a lot of mud on them. So I went back to the old mud pan and 14" knife. This day I am watching you get the mud onto the hawk more closely ....PS...I mud like my Ex-wife has to do the sanding...
If your a beginner don't be afraid to put it on thin and apply many coats. 5+ in many cases for me and I sort of know what I'm doing. This guy is amazing. Even circles some very good Mexicanos.
I’ve been doing commercial framing, drywall, and finishing for about 10 years now. I like Chad, you can tell he’s been doing this for a long time. For entertainment I watch these videos sometimes. It trips me out how on other instructional videos they have some guy that doesn’t do finishing at all explaining the proper way to do finishing, yet he is clearly a novice at best who went to school to learn the trade. It’s actually rather pathetic. Good vids man
He's absolutely amazing. I hope Chad is making 40 dollars an hour or more or bids high by the job. I have worked with union drywall "professionals" that put more mud on the floor and take twice the time as Chad. Truly a master at your craft.
Hey guy you have one of the most informative vids yet, very well done and to the point. I m glad I watched this one. Keep up the good work "That's the way you do it"!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your experience, this helped me improve my work a lot, but I have to ask you to use a microphone instead of the camera one. The room echo distorts the sound and make it harder to understand. Great job from one of the best professionals I've ever seen!
Thanks for an awesome video. Chad is amazing, makes it look so easy, poetry in motion. One comment, to improve audio if possible. The echo in an empty room makes some of the conversation hard for me to catch. Maybe throw an old piece of carpet or rug on the floor nearby while recording?
Nice touch to manually set those Proud screws deeper. Never thought of just a screw driver. That drill is too easy to grab. But the hand tool is easier to control on the back side. I’ll do that from now on’.
Kody Horvey The screw driver is STURDY brand? A specialized screw driver. Ok I’ll look for that kind. I also like how you manage that tape roller on your belt and cut/tear tape with putty knife. Cut down on too many tools to manage. 😁
Not bad, Chad seems to know his stuff, I'm amazed he didn't teach people to back wipe the first coat on the screws, it removes that pesky air pocket that may leave a hole when you rough sand between coats. Back wiping is, apply mud & wipe off as shown, then back wipe the opposite direction.
any of your joints, even sometimes corner you should be using a set mud first....then the blue use green all purpose joint compound on inside corner if not bag 5-210. Where do you get your hand trawls, I cant find and curved or flat lately
here's a little tip for the Harry homeowners that think they can do their own drywall after watching a few of this guys videos - You won't be able to - it takes years of practice to get that good.
Wow, you are so good at your job and also by the way you teach! You know, sir, you should start again those videos with good light, good sound and in 4K. I'm a retired photographer, it's just too bad you are not close to my home, because I will offer you to do this for free. Merci!
IM doing this now. I left so much mud on and figured i would come back and sand out all the imperfections. Im planning on burning my house down instead now.
@@uptokode i have about 1500 hours of hawk and trowel experience but very little experience taping joints. I understand the process but i would probably be slower with the taping and have never used banjos or other contraptions.
Such a trip see tapers with hawk and trowel....east coast thing....west coast is all done with knives and mud pan....either way doenst matter Chad is a taping machine
Horizontal is stronger. 1 piece of drywall screwed to more studs. And easier to tape going Horizontal rather than vertical on all but joints. Horizontal you can Stand up the whole time . And way less butt joints
I found going vertical, especially on an exterior when you have vapour barrier, if the studs are bowed, it’s a real bugger getting sheets to land half way on the studs. And you can’t move or adjust them. Horizontal is the way.
I know Chad likes using a 12” for almost everything. He does have a 16” or 18” to really flatten out his butt joints. The bigger trowels are great for renovation work as you typically need to flatten out some ugly humps. As for brand i know Marshalltown is well know and I have my fair share of those. Just check your local drywall supplier or wholesaler and they know what the pro’s like and use.
Chad, and I say this without trace of gayness, you are my hero. Watching you float mud is an honor sir! You must have the altruism gene. Regardless, thanks for sharing man.
Never seen a professional do one screw at a time, fill the side of your six inch and drag it up a row of screws and come back down removing all the compound except what stay behind in the screw hole. It eve much butter for when u have to sand
Can u do some close up shots of hanging, prefilling, taping and finishing a long horizontal joint where a tapered edge meets a cut edge? For example when a house floods and u cut the Sheetrock at 24" above the floor.
+Maxkil I'm camera man, director and producer! Haha. Chad is the pro and I'm a general contractor and journeyman carpenter. Self taught taper so not nearly as good as Chad.
It's a square concrete trowel. 12" long. If you watch real close Chad sometimes switches to a 14" or 16" when coating butt joints. I will use a 16" in renovation situations where joints aren't always perfect like a new build.
i never use bigger than 12 even if the walls are very bad i trained mu self to use only 12 inch and its been 2 or 3 years ive been working only with a 12 inch and i seriously dont know how to use a 14 or 16
+Kody Horvey (Up To Kode) they make nice stiff blades now for us guys that work pan and knife. We don't use them at all times like one of our regular knives, but if we got really shallow work we have to fill in, we will use them
It would have proven more effective to edit Chad's narration, made from an acoustic room, in as it was being done or to have presented your own narration outside of that echoing room, which made the instruction vague and unappealing.
mesh tape and paper tape both work just fine! u don't gotta use a specific brand or type of mud for either tape, nor do u have to use hot mud. The only exception is u want to use taping mud when taping joints with paper tape. if your paper tape peels off the wall too easily, then u just simply didn't tape the joint properly, not enough mud under the tape or something, if your mesh tape cracks, then then the gap the u mesh taped was probably too big of a gap and it wasn't pre-filled before putting the mesh tape on, or the board wasnt screwed nice and tight
dam bro wish i could mud with you we could knock shit out i like to mud fresh rock been doing a lot of residential but would like to see your final finish coat video
I have watched quite a few videos about mud and taping drywall, and I must say the ones with Chad are by far the best ones.
Watched the whole series on drywall and Chad, you are a hero. “Pressure on the toe, nice and tight, no sanding”. LOVE this guy. Thanks so much for the video.

I’m really glad you shared that ! Thank you
Chad is the Bob Ross of drywall.
So awesome to see a man take so much pride in his mud and tape work. A level of pride that is absent by most these days.
This is an EXCELLENT series of videos I have learned a lot from! you are an artist, I've watched a lot of these videos trying to pick-up some tips for my home project and yours are the best. Thanks for sharing.

Great explanation. I use you as a refresher when I do my stuff. Thanks and happy mudding.

Highly skilled craftsman. Fun and interesting to watch you at your craft.
Amazing instructional video and very nice muddling process.

+Stephen Rison Have to try some tricks like that for the next videos. Bought a good mic but those don't fix all the audio issues.
Artistry. A pleasure to watch.
"There you have it" A masterpiece.
Nice touch to manually set those Proud screws deeper. Never thought of just a screw driver. That drill is too easy to grab. But the hand tool is easier to control on the back side. I’ll do that from now on’.
They are called “sturdy” and yes they are very handy. They are made in Canada
Kody Horvey The screw driver is STURDY brand?
A specialized screw driver.
Ok I’ll look for that kind.
I also like how you manage that tape roller on your belt and cut/tear tape with putty knife. Cut down on too many tools to manage. 😁
I love watching you do this.

Great videos! Turn on a work light. Will improve for us viewers a lot.
LOL Chad Is the bob ross of drywall lol
2 hairs and some air
is that trowel perfectly flat or does it have a slight bow to it? thanks for the videos i have progressed a ton since watching them!👌
Probably should have watched this before I did my mudding tonight!
any of your joints, even sometimes corner you should be using a set mud first....then the blue

One day I’ll have a Mack daddy set up. I would be open to some info on good camera, lights, mic’s and other goodies to do a pro video job.
You sir are a bad ass! Wished I was a quarter of how good you are at this lol!
you both are the best. your videos are awesome.
I appreciate the feedback !
Trust him. You do not want to sand. Do your absolute best to minimize sanding
IM doing this now. I left so much mud on and figured i would come back and sand out all the imperfections. Im planning on burning my house down instead now.
great vid. is there a way to get taping experience without going through an apprenticeship?
Yes of course. At least I don’t see why not. I’m assuming most companies don’t really care if you have a ticket as long as you are good and reliable
@@uptokode i have about 1500 hours of hawk and trowel experience but very little experience taping joints. I understand the process but i would probably be slower with the taping and have never used banjos or other contraptions.
This guy has mad skills. He makes this look too easy. Dear camera guy...please get closer.
I'm just learning too.good lines man..just wonder if you guys use a box sometimes?
Very nice work... Or should I say nice Art work The man is an artist !!
If you wanted to use the best type of mud for the situation what kind of mud do you use under the tape and what type of mud do you use over the tape?
I use a taping compound to set tapes and beads (synko yellow) and a coating mud after that (synko green).
the mud jedi is back with the force
Ah the old hack and shovel routine welcome back to the stone age
Not to many folks still use trawls and hawks. that Hawk has seen better days. I still like using hawks and trawls as well
+The Blue Collar Preacher Chad's hawk is formed perfectly for his technique. When he tries a new one he can't wipe his trowel clean. Kind of funny
your good bro, but what's with doing the screws individually?
Residential builder here done a fair amount of mudding myself are your trowels curved or flat ?
Good Recap at the end👍👷
The Beast is the best!
Such a trip see tapers with hawk and trowel....east coast thing....west coast is all done with knives and mud pan....either way doenst matter Chad is a taping machine
It was very helpful thank you for the video 👍🏿
The Bob Ross of drywall.
Why do you put the drywall horizontally and. Not vertically? Does it make a difference? Thanks
yerovi86 I saw another video where the contractor said it's stronger horizontally
Horizontal is stronger. 1 piece of drywall screwed to more studs. And easier to tape going Horizontal rather than vertical on all but joints. Horizontal you can Stand up the whole time . And way less butt joints
Good response!
I found going vertical, especially on an exterior when you have vapour barrier, if the studs are bowed, it’s a real bugger getting sheets to land half way on the studs. And you can’t move or adjust them. Horizontal is the way.
Great video thxs
Ur like the Bob Ross of Mudding... somebody beer this guy!
Very informative but audio is horrible with that empty room echo.
Too much echo in an empty room! Microphone is positioned too far away!
Very helpful, thanks.
this man is real good knows his shit
Kody Horvey
Good job! What trowels do you use? Size, make. Thanks

OF THE 40,000 PLUS VEIWS. I THINK ABOUT 50 WAS ME. LOL
+manny strong Hope the video helps ya!
Jajjajajaja me too
Chad, and I say this without trace of gayness, you are my hero. Watching you float mud is an honor sir! You must have the altruism gene. Regardless, thanks for sharing man.
drmorb Gifts in the wrist lol
GREAT STUFF!!!!
I do love the videos
For flats you should use the FULL size of the trowel. His but joints are correct.

Good idea! It will take me some time to mock that up but thank you for the suggestion.
Master Drywaller
...'a self taught Mudda' the Mudda's and da Pappa's..lol
I still don’t understand why too much mud on one joint.. I still think you’re great and all but I think it’s over kill?
Chadddddd! Lol u better go beast mode on tom brady this weekend
Haha. I’ll pass that on!
Chad is a good setter, Where you at Kode?
+Maxkil I'm camera man, director and producer! Haha. Chad is the pro and I'm a general contractor and journeyman carpenter. Self taught taper so not nearly as good as Chad.
You fellas sounds very canadian.
When can we see the inside corners done?
+Robert Randhan Can't remember off the top of my head. Could be part 3, 4 and/or 5.
Please add titles because it is hard to hear. Thanks and God bless!
Does that trowel have a curved blade or is it a flat blade concrete trowel? And how long is that one?
It's a square concrete trowel. 12" long. If you watch real close Chad sometimes switches to a 14" or 16" when coating butt joints. I will use a 16" in renovation situations where joints aren't always perfect like a new build.

Are trowels better than knifes to apply 1st,2nd and 3rd coat of mud?
+Robert Randhan trowels have less flex than a knife so in my opinion they are far better for coating and maintaining flat work.
+Kody Horvey (Up To Kode) they make nice stiff blades now for us guys that work pan and knife. We don't use them at all times like one of our regular knives, but if we got really shallow work we have to fill in, we will use them
Kody Horvey can you please let me know what tipe of trowel are you using is it a bevel trowel curve and how many inches it have
Kody Horvey just gotta grab some of those nice sheetrock knives and you're good! Lol
Excellent work I do my butts exactly as you do.
dudes so good kinda makes ya mad..hate muddin.... lol
david meyer lots of practice makes it easy
Well done Chad, you are a plaster master. I never got the hang of using trowels. Prefer wider knives. Was your Dad a plasterer?
+Rare Arts Construction No he wasn't. Thanks for commenting
Kody Horvey what was his skill?
why no skimcoat the full wall?
this is great.
Is there a difference between you and Chad? I think you might be the same person.
You guys are masters of drywall. You could sell dvds if your audio was better and you talked slower...remember it like youre teaching me chinese.
My intent was a DVD but the audio didn’t turn out . Next time.
Wrinkles are not fine they are really blisters or bubbles caused by not having enough mud under the tape they will screw you up almost every time.
Why isn't that plaster pink?
It would have proven more effective to edit Chad's narration, made from an acoustic room, in as it was being done or to have presented your own narration outside of that echoing room, which made the instruction vague and unappealing.

I think you need a new hawk Chad
dam bro wish i could mud with you we could knock shit out i like to mud fresh rock been doing a lot of residential but would like to see your final finish coat video
The real way is with a pan and knife, The best way is with taping boxes
He is using hock and trowel, that is for plaster
I see the guy likes to you use the word bevel for those joints that meet. I think the proper term would be tapered
Chad is slow he could be tough a few tricks to speed his proses up for sure keep on keeping on guys
Can u you just get started please.
I’m sure it’s hard to avoid but the audio in an empty room is really difficult to understand. Too bad bc there must be some great advise he’s giving.
You guys Canadian?
"beast" shirt...🤘🤘
the sound echoed so bad you couldn't hear clear. Slow down the talking and explain more.
He keeps talking about sanding. I've never known a pro who had to sand drywall top coat mud, unless there's absolutely no texture.
Audio is pretty bad but information is great.
Agreed!
Much harder than he makes it look.
