- When I first saw this piece in the box I couldn't help but laugh! Then, after examining it a bit, it was clear to me that it could be turned. I love all the nature this piece has, I only wish my finish did it justice. Finished in shellac.

I get the feeling Tuffy was giggling under his breath as he packed this and was thinking " Here you go Phil, have fun 😁😁".
I'd bet money on that and I'm not a betting guy.
😃
Yeah, there's gotta be a lot of into-the-sleeve chortling between these two.
Don’t be hard on yourself, that looks AMAZING!!!! I can see a mythical forest creature like a fairy or a gnome or a leprechaun sitting in it like a royal lounge chair, feet off the lower end and arms high on the tall edges like he’s king of the forest. EXCELLENT WORK!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm glad you like it, thank you, Richard! 😃
You’re being too hard on yourself Phil. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and plenty of viewers love the shiny finish. You did a great job from start to finish. Thank you for sharing your talent with us
Thanks, Gary! 😃
Morning Phil, I know it is shiny but at times I like shiny and this is one of those times.
Thanks to Tuffy for sending it to you.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Cool! Thanks, Huw! 😃
Phil, You are so inspirational for those of us tired of turning basic bowls. I love wonky!!!!
Me too, Ken! Thank you! 😃
I’ve gotta say that when you were sanding that I had my heart in my mouth because I almost convinced myself something was going to go a bit wrong, thankfully I was wrong!!!. It’s looking fantastic as always.
Thanks, Martin! 😀
Stop being so hard on yourself and just enjoy the beautiful artwork you created !!!! ❤ the finish is beautiful !!
😃
Phil,
Just the other day, I saved a root very similar to that one and the fella I rescued it from probably thought I was crazy but, I just told him Phil taught me how to make something beautiful out of something like this. Everything has value..
Thanks Phil
Absolutely, Russ! 😃
Hi Phil, you turn the most unturnable pieces of wood ! I am deeply impressed of the result .
Thanks, Stefan! 😃
More fun than a barrel of monkeys! An adventure every time. Thanks, Phil.
😃
Like any artist, they’re disappointed in the final result yet someone else really LOVES it. Good work.
Thank you very much, Mark! 😃
We enjoy your videos and your comments that you make as you explain what you are doing! You are "Easy,Peasy" to watch!
Good to know, Paul, thank you! 😃
Phil if ever a brain and hands worked in harmony this is it. Wonderful
😃
I think Tuffy was laughing all the way to the Post Office. Regardless of the finish problems, that is a unique piece! I like it.
He probably was, Joseph! 😃
Phil, I don't think the finish detracts from the beauty of the piece what so ever. Yes it isn't what you're used to but it makes all the details of this beautiful piece of art pop. I love it. Tuffy knew you would create a stunning piece with that.
Thank you, Jane! 😃
Nothing wrong with the finish. It's a beautiful piece of art.
😃
You're too hard on yourself. That was a real adventure to watch. School was in session. Thanks for doing that and showing Tuffy there's no such thing as an unturnable piece of wood.
Haha, we got him, didn't we, Garth! 😃
I think it’s pretty cool! I love it! My wife said that if you don’t want it, you could always throw it her way! LOL! We really like it! Great job!
Thanks Ted and wife! 😃
I love the basket of crystals and the crystal ball idea...it looks as though made for it
😃
you've outdone yourself, phil. the finish might not be the best, but you learned something, so the effort wasn't wasted. it's still a beautiful piece. i think it is just perfect for holding that other bowl you showed with it.
😃
Upon seeing this beautiful piece of "fogwood" I thought it would be beautiful as is. Just clean any debris, even out the bottom (hopefully being able to save Tuffy's writing) then spraying. It would have been a true work of Nature's Art. You did a fabulous job going the extra mile (and nail biting). You are correct it is Nature's Art. I L❤ve your commitment to preserving Nature at it's finest!!
I like the way you think, Bonita! 😃 There have been a few pieces where I thought, "hey, just clean and apply finish!"
Its a unique piece! Some people like a satin finish and some people like a glossy finish. So it’s fine, just as it is. 👍👍
😃
I really enjoyed this video Phil... I love how you just bring us into your shop and your process... it's like hanging out in your best friends shop!
That's how I think of us, Anthony. We're all just standing around the lathe shooing the breeze! 😃
I think it looks wonderful. It is shinier than most of your work but i know there are several of us, me included, who wish we could pull this off and it look this good. Great job and great piece, thank you sir for your time and experience, truly a pleasure!
Thanks a lot for watching, Eddie! 😃
I think the little bowl works best, with this project. It covers the unseemly shine, while adfing its own, more subtle glow.
😃
It would make a wonderful seat for an antique doll 🎉🎉❤❤
😃
We are loving what you do Phil!
We wait in anticipation every Thursday night for your videos sir!
We love you in Oklahoma and hope you and your family are doing very well.❤😊
We are all good here, Ronnie in Oklahoma! I wish the same for you and your family, thank you! 😃
Amazing piece Phil !! What is even more amazing is that you went ahead fought your reservations and still turned it get this beauty and that is important 👏👏👏
Thank you, Narayan! 😃
Fearless Phil tames the wild root ball. Now THIS is the kind of turning you excel at. Congratulations. I love the shape and the sheen. Personally, I prefer a shiny finish on wood that leaves it looking wet. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Please do more like this. Gaps, inclusions, interesting shapes, I love em all. God bless you and keep you.
Thank you, Jerry! These kinds of pieces are kind of rare but I sure will turn them as I get them! 😃
You’re a brave man! Phil- 1 Manzanita- 0. Great win. The finish isn’t as poor as you think it is. If you’re too disappointed with the finish, turn that sand-o-flex back on it. Thanks for tackling this challenge!
Thanks, Danella! 😃
Yes, we love it. We agree with you about the finish.
😃
It's made by you, Phil. Therefore it's beautiful and creatve.
How nice of you, Audie, thank you! 😊
I love manzanita. It is such a beautiful wood, although it is definitely a bear to work with. The twists and knarls are so fascinating.
😃
The bowl is really pretty. I love how the various branches of the root ball look after the turning. It needs nothing more. Thanks Phil!😊
Thank you, Karen! 😃
Your mistakes Are better than most people's regular work. Keep it up.
Haha, thank you, Monte! 😃
...and proving once again how he got the name Toughy!!!...
Remember Phil...only you know what you envisioned...the rest of us just see a gorgeous work of art...👍
As for me???...I think a crystal ball would look mystical in that piece...and flat out awesome!
Matt
I'll keep trying to find one, Matt, thanks! 😃
Im looking through the shiny finish and I can see the beauty of the wood. I had confidence in your skill and talent that you would listen to the wood as it told you what it wanted to be. You did an EXCELLENT job! Thanks Phil!
I appreciate this, Texana, thank you! 😃
Wow Phil, I can say, only on your channel will we see something this beautiful, the finish looks great from here, was holding my breath the whole time.
Haha, thank you, Chris! Now breathe....
It’s a great piece of work. As for the finish - I had a similar dilemma and decided that if some of my piece was shiny then I was going to go very shiny all over and painted it with yacht deck varnish. The client (my wife) thought that it was lovely because the varnish softened all the edges. I always love your videos and you teach me so much. Thanks a million for the hard work. Slainge
Thank you, Slainge! 😃
Lots of character to it. Artwork. Beautiful.
Thanks, Khan! 😃
Mr. Tuffy was trying to have a GOT YOU Phil. Great job as always
He failed, Jack! 😃
WOW!!! THANK YOU PHIL...Well Phil, I was wrong. I thought the first thing you would do is grab a big bottle of super glue and soak that "Mangled Manzanita". Phil this was a bunch of fun!!! I watched you try different holding techniques and different ways of sanding, mounting, finishing. Phil this turning was successful and I am surprised. Another great one "in the books"...TM
I was thinking a couple of wood screws through the plywood and into the feet of the piece, but it turned out better this way.
@@josephcote6120 Sounds good to me also Joseph. I do not turn wood so I am continually learning new ways of working wood from Phil and others. I guess the objective is that the finish piece is free of any mounting holes or obvious signs of how it was mounted? ... TM
I absolutely LOVE this piece except for my finish, Tuffy! You sent several perfect turning pieces but this one was singing as I opened the box. I HAD to turn it, first! 😃
Your turning knowledge is exceptional.
Thank you, Rory! 😃
Love all the amazing features with so much going on. I absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing!
😃
I don't know Tuffy, but I can imagine him in his shop, challenged to find a piece so hard to turn into something beautiful that it would defeat even Phil. He got pretty close this time.
Haha, you know Tuffy too! 😃
Good evening, Phil.
I am impressed. Very nicely done. You had a lot of design possibilities and decisions to make and in the end, a wonderful piece. Excellent.
Ray
Thank you very much, Ray! 😃
Beautiful work again, Phil! Your positivity and determination is what definitely help you through.
😃
I wouldn’t be disgusted with that finish, Phil. I like it 🌞
😃
I was on edge the whole time! I love it!
😃
Way too hard on yourself Phil. The finish looks fine to me maybe a little shinier than you wanted but still a great looking piece. I would not have had the nerve to have tackled it to begin with. You always amaze me with your creativity.
Keep on keeping on my friend!
Thank you, Bob! 😃
Wow! I love how this piece turned out. Absolutely gorgeous!
Cool, thank you, Ladybug! 😃
A beautiful piece of work. I didn’t think the finish was that bad.
😃
I know an artist is his own worst critic... Go easy on yourself... I love the chaos in this one! I agree the finish isn't right but you'll get it. Maybe scuff up the bowl part and use your normal brush applied finish. Whatever you decide to do I like the bowl its beautiful! Keep finding the beauty in the chaos... And I'll keep watching! Thanx again for sharing your process! ✌️😎👍
I appreciate that, thank you! 😃
Very much enjoy watching you create a thing of beauty from a piece of, errr, hmmm, ‘FOG’ wood …
LOL! Thanks, Mark! 😃
You work on the craziest pieces of wood🥴. I’m always amazed how you are able to pull it off. Congrats⭐️
Thank you, Denise! 😃
I love the piece….I’m a satin finish girl, so I’d love to see it with a not-so-shiny finish…but it’s a great piece…I love your vision…and I DO like how it looks holding that wooden bowl…👍🏻
Thank you, Loraine! 😃
You could definitely put some M&M's in there. Love it. I agree it's too shiney, but beautiful!
😃
Hi Phil. Another masterpiece due to your incredible imagination. Just a suggestion. If the shiny finish does not suit you, just try and buff it inside the bowl with steel wool to dull the sheen. I have done it in the past, it works well at times.
I did that very thing, Jerry and it was too dull. Applied just a little shellac on a rag and the shine came right back! 😃
WOW! Love it , Phill! Can’t wait to turn a root ball (?) ! It’s inspiring how you step up to the plate when it comes to such a challenge!
Thank you very much, Mike! 😃
Another beautiful piece of art!! No need to be disappointed in your work, it looks great.
Thanks, Gus! 😃
You are a brave wood turner Phil!
I just believe that just about anything can be turned, Bennett! 😊
Loved watching you figure this piece out! Beautiful.
It was a challenge but fun at the same time, Brenda! 😃
For such a gnarly piece to begin with , I think it turned out great Phil !
😃
I think it came out well. Thanks for your patience and skill! 👍👍
😃
It's an interesting piece and it's beautiful is in the different shapes. 😊I personally think it looks good the way it is. And as always thanks again for sharing with your UA-cam family
Thank you, Doug! 😃
Hey Phil
You get such Wonderful pieces of wood ! Such
Beautiful Wood !
Take Care and Be Safe
Yes, I am SOOO fortunate, Larry! Thank you! 😃
I do love the shapes, Phil. You nailed that!
😊
Phil, you really took on a challenge. I agree with other, Tuffy is laughing if he watched this turning. I can't image how many hours of sanding it must have taken to final this piece. Love the three point base and all of the other features. I agree with you the finish is too shiny for manzanita.
😃
It is said, that we are our own worst critic. I think the piece turned out great. Something different from the norm. Don't be so hard on yourself Phil, another outstanding piece. Stay safe and Have Fun.
I love the piece as I do all of your work. If you want to redo any kind of finish saturating it with the correct solvent from a spray bottle and scrubbing it with a soft bristle brush will remove the offending finish. Then just apply your preferred finish. Good luck.
Thanks, Donald! 😃
That’s an amazing piece Phil! Be proud sir , you are one creative genius. I think you achieved your purpose - it is a work of art.👆☝️🤙
Thank you, Kid! 😃
Credit for even tackling it Phil... Well done mate.
I'd have looked at it and broken into a sweat. 😅👍
LOL! 😃
Well done Phil. There is no way that I could have figured out to do with this piece.
I bet you could, Jack! 😃
Phil don't be so hard on yourself. You have found and revealed the beautiful grain and figure in a piece most of us would be afraid to touch. Tuffy must be a great friend only a friend would be that diabolical
LOL!
Why can't a bowl - or any other turning - be shiny? I think this piece has a special personality all its own. Well turned and you do have a piece of art. Nobody who sees it will say "Oh, no, what a disaster". I'll bet a majority of your consistent viewers will like this. As always, "I'll take it".
Thank you so much, Jim! 😃
Wow oh wow it looks stunning Phil I just love it you turned it like only you can beautiful piece of art work and i like the shine it makes it and brings out all the flaws that gives it so much character Blessings
Glad you like it, Wade, thank you! 😃
That is very cool, at first I was thinking cut it in half....then I could mess up two pieces. At least no rocks came flying out. Definitely a sit on the edge of my seat turning.
Be well my friend.
Haha, "mess up two pieces!" Too funny, Dennis! 😃
Phil it would look beautiful with an air plant in it , what an amazingly beautiful piece, it is so natural and unique, I personally love it well done from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks, Roger! 😃
Awesome work, Phil. I absolutely love this project. Gorgeous!
😃
Tuffy definitely has a sadistic streak, I love it! An amazing piece as always Phil. 👊😎🥃🇺🇸
LOL! Thanks, Michael! 😃
In previous comments, I mentioned I have turned metal for production custom turnings. I have taught machining principles to hundreds of people over 40 years. One of the main principles I always stressed was holding power. Chucking or fixturing for odd shapes became paramount in the quality of the finished piece. I was worried about the double sided tape. Gluing was the best bet. But even then, I was holding my breath. You did a great job getting through the piece. Considering there were interrupted cuts, you really had nice control. I think I enjoyed watching this as much as looking at the finished part. No one’s er called me an artist but you are one for sure. Love your work.
So kind of you, Stewart, thank you! 😃
Phil you have inspired me to tackle rootballs. That’s about all I want do now, when I can find them. I like that you talk about how you plan to orient the piece and the different ways to mount it. I’m currently working on a rootball from a bush or shrub that my neighbor was dragging across his lawn a couple days ago, headed for the dump. I told him I would make something out of the root for him and his wife and I got the weirdest look. He had no idea something interesting could be made from a dead shrub root. It’s fresh out of the ground and green so I’ve roughed it out and am waiting for it to dry for awhile. The before and after pics of this thing will be wild. Thanks for the inspiration.
😃
That would make a wonderful candle holder as a decorative piece
😃
I have the same feeling for what You, Tuffy and Nature have done, it is fantastic. Sad that the shellac spray (ruined it) but if you sit down and think for a while you will find a solution.❤
Carsten
Thanks, Carsten! 😃
Nature and the artist at his best, lovely shape. although gotta admit i was kinda waiting for the explosion, as for the finish we both think the shine sets it off. don't be disgusted Phil, be Happy, it's a treasure. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you, Gary! 😃
This is one reason I love watching your channel. That turned out AMAZING. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you, Jimmy! 😃
Beautiful piece, don't beat yourself up too much (the wood will do that for you). Turning is all about trying something different, and that is certainly different. I'm like you, I prefer a satin finish, but the shape (?😅?) Is amazing!
Thank you, David! 😃
Well that is truly different and beautiful, you did a great job of turning it and the finish although shiny still looks very good! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you, Al! 😃
Very interesting wood. Those darn spray finishes inject a lot of air & shine. A clear crystal insert would be cool. 🔮
😃
Beautiful bowl mr Phil! I love it! Thanks for sharing with us! I think the finish is perfect! Don’t touch it
😃
You are a brave man Phil, heck I had my mask and facemask on just watching you work. (I didn't wear gloves, but I sat on my hands). 🤭 I think you did a great job, I also think that the finish on the turned part takes away from the natural look of the grain, but I like it on the unturned surface. All in all, very nice, and for sure unique.
Wow, thanks! 😊
Thanks Taffy M for sending this FOG wood to Phil...lol 😆 Phil not your usual finished project but I do prefer it with the wooden soup bowl in it over the candy dish 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻& think you should keep the 2 (bowl & holder) together as the finished project 😉 👍🏻
I liked the wood bowl in it too, Duchess. Perfect fit! Thank you! 😃
That was pure magic from Start to Finish, Phil. To me it looked fantastic with that bowl of Crystals in. Hope you find your wife's Crystal Balls to try in it. You definitely shouldn't be disappointed with the result.
Thank you, Cliff! 😃
Really gorgeous piece Phil - this is a piece of wood that you could have just spent ages looking at without any turning, but having worked your magic, and applied a finish it truly is a piece of art - you could even wall mount it!
Good to see you Phil, hope you're well - happy turning!
Thanks Paul! 😃
Well Phil I haven't disagreed with you about your turns, but I love the shine on this bowl. As an art piece, I think it looks fine. It's such an unusual piece. I think nature and yourself brought it to life!!! Thanks for sharing your talent. Have a great weekend. 🥰
Thank you, Mary! 😃
Yet another beautiful piece, I love turning root balls, they are so interesting and always a challenge. Refinish mate, you are not happy and won't be until you do. I use my home made shine juice, paint the cracks and crevices and finish with a cloth in the same way as you apply French polishing.
😃
Hi Phil it's called eye candy bowl. It's awesome keep the dream alive. 🏅🏅🏅Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Thanks, Ernie! 😃
I like it Phil you are being to hard on yourself I think it's very nice
😊
Wow. Your mounting technique was instructive as was your use of carbide. I have shied away from buying carbide chisels but now see their value. It is a very stunning piece, just incredible; it definitely inspires me to be more adventurous in my turning. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos. You are an artisan extrodinare!
Thanks, Steve! I'm so glad you are thinking outside the box. So much wood with so many possibilities and these kinds of pieces are rewarding and get noticed. Have fun! 😃
I agree that the shininess is disappointing, but I enjoyed watching you decide how to turn it, and the turned product. You also gave me some ideas for some lilac root balls I have drying in the shed.
😃
Personally, I LIKE the shine. It works with the nooks and curves.
😃
