This was a 3 team mission. Eddie and Dustin were meant to distract the DemoBats while Steve, Robin, and Nancy infiltrated Vecna's lair .. he was trying to give them more time.

The hole would have let the bat monsters into the real world, he was buying more time for them to stop the bats and protecting Dustin and the rest of the town.
