24 Hours Of Le Mans 2022 - What a Week (Part 1)

- I competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Portuguese structure alongside Jack Aitken (UK) and John Falb (USA) in the #47 Oreca used by ALGARVE PRO RACING TEAM. On the very best track of the world, I was hoping for a podium or even a win in the LMP2 Pro-Am class.
Unfortunately, everything changed already at the start.
On the approach to the flying start, my gearbox got stuck in first gear, which is why I had to abort the race start in the starting phase and the entire field passed by.
In a radio exchange with my team, I was told to stop and restart the car. My display showed N (Neutral), although 1st gear was engaged. At around 80 km/h I rolled around the 13,626 km long track to get back into the pits. For what felt like an eternity. My crew then quickly found the issue in the pits. A sensor in the switching hydraulics got overheated and failed as a consequence. The change costed us more time. By the time I was able to resume the race, we had lost six laps, or about 15 minutes, to the entire field.
Out of the 81 drivers who competed in the LMP2 class, I set the 17th fastest time in LMP2. It was a 3'32"664 achieved in the race. At the time of the lap it was even the tenth fastest LMP2 lap. This performance matches that of PLATINUM driver and is even significantly better than others PLATINUM or GOLD rated pilots. Only two silver drivers of PREMA and WRT were better in the race, all also in 3:32 minutes .
My team with Jack Aitken and John Falb drove great. We were the fastest LMP2 ProAm and - unfortunately subjunctive - would have won the class with a lap lead. But it was not meant to be.
The boys were incredibly motivated and pushed despite the obviously hopeless situation. We made good laps after laps. But it was easy to see that if nothing big happened, it wouldn't be enough for a podium. Psychologically, it's not easy, I can tell you.
Regardless of the technical problem, my team did a perfect job. We had a super fast race car. Thanks to the whole APR crew: Stewart, Sam, David, Felix and all the engineers and mechanics. But the men and women behind the scenes who look after us drivers: 1000 thanks!
Our race lasted 24:04:43.281 for 361 laps = 4,918.986 km. We completed the fastest lap with an average speed of 231.8 kmh. My driving time in the 24H was just under 9 hours. At the limit.
Part 2 of the vlog will be published next Sunday.

What an incredibly awesome, thorough, and informative video of the days, leading up to the 24!
"Thank You", for sharing this part with us!
Looking forward to Part 2.
Still Believing, from Detroit Michigan USA! 👌👍👏💪🤟🏁🏁
What a Week !!!! Amazing !!! All the Best for you, Sophia!!! Always!!!
Job #1 Finish. Done. Better than last year, on to next race, on to next year.
Hope you guys have more luck next year. It's really unpleasant when electronics let you down. And a huge like. Not many race drivers upload videos about their cars, tracks, etc. It's sorely missing from the standard commentary of races.
I like how Sophia has acquired a pro tv presenter style for this kind of videos 😀
Always good to see you Sophia.... You are a real Ray of Sunshine.... I look forward to the next video.... :-))) xxx
Thanks Jan for filming all this. Thanks Sophia for the insight into a Le Mans weekend.
I was gutted when I saw your car crawling at the start of the race, pleased it wasn't anything race ending but I also knew it was taking you out of the win equation. Kudos to you, Jack and John for keeping the motivation. Getting to the finish of a Le Mans is an achievement in itself I reckon. Looking forward to Sunday's vlog.
Love you so much 😘💘

Thanks for taking the time to record this video Sophia. Thanks also to Jan (I hope I have the name correct) for taking the video. Good luck to you and team APR at Monza. Especially to you and Bent in the chicanes. I'll keep my fingers crossed and say a little prayer that you get though the first chicane unscathed on the start. :)
P.S. Btw, any chance of you ever coming to the states to run an IMSA race, or run in the series? Just curious.
Call the poster guy ! :)
Guarantee next years car will have the strongest gearbox sensors on the grid.
So ture🥰😎😎
greeting from Hong Kong!
I love it !!!!!
i was really hoping you would be the first women class winner at le mans. difficult race to be sure. hope your team wins the rest of the race season. good luck.
Michèle Mouton, Marianne Hoepfner and Christine Dacremont already did that in 1975 by winning the 2-litre prototype class...
Ha! I saw myself in the autograph line
got dayum
Good luck Sophia 👦🏻👍🏻🏎️🏁
Ohhhhh>>>>??? First Track Music?? who ??> Tc x
Nice your feedback , waiting sunday for part 2 , i followed the race but not in totality . What problem you had ? Gear , motor ?
Can't wait to watch the Part 2 🔥
Glad to finally hear what happened in the beginning of the race. I had thought it was somehow due to the collision in the first corner.
what was that :))

See you next year 😉
Viel Spaß noch 🙃
Better luck next time. It happens.

Rubber bands for training! It would be nice to know what kind of exercises drivers like you do with rubber bands!
Any plans to eventually run in Indycar or IMSA?
Look, I'm just gonna say it. If I get to make a race next year, I'm getting my picture taken with Jan. 📸

Sorry but the biggest race is the 24h of nürburgring
LE Mans is the most popular and the most médiatized but the Nurburgring is the toughest in the world
