What I really love about this episode and the writing here is that writers waste no time. Aang spends the first half of this season finding an earthbending teacher. And then as soon as he starts to physically learn earthbending, in the next episode they introduce the plot of the solar eclipse and Appa being kidnapped. The reason Wan-Chi Tong turns into a dragon at the end is because in western myth owls are seen as symbols of wisdom but in the east, they’re unlucky. Dragons are symbolic of wisdom in the east. So the writers thought they would get the best of both worlds by having the knowledge spirit turn into a dragon at the end. Ruff you are right. In the comics, we meet a group of people who are not airbenders but ascribe to airbender philosophies. Some of them even get the arrow tattoos. And I don't know if you caught it but the firebender who found the library was Zhao. It's where he learned the location of the moon and ocean spirits.
Toph holding up an ENTIRE BUILDING BY HERSELF for an extended period of time is honestly one of the most impressive feats of bending that we see in this show. There are other things later that people often credit as her most powerful earthbending moments, but this has to top it for me. It really shows that she’s genuinely a full earthbending master already
Bruh, she held up a library the size of the taj ma hal, only earth bender we know of who could do that eas kyoshi and that fire nation avatar who used earth bending to bend 5 volcanos worth of lava!!!
FYI, ancient persia had icehouses in the desert. They would let water freeze at night in wide shallow trenches, then break the ice and store it in a very well insulated room that was half underground.
6:57 I have to say, as a disabled person, joking about your inabilities is pretty fun, especially when people close to you get comfortable enough to respond in kind. My new nickname in my family has become wheels since I started using my wheelchair, humor helps to make others more comfortable about it and helps me have an outlet to make jokes and lighten the mood around my disabilities. That’s one of the reasons why Toph is such a well written disabled character, that’s totally something people in her situation do, and her using earth bending to adapt and change the way she lives her life isn’t all that far off from how real people use various different methods, meds and equipment to make their lives easier!
I get you. I have severe back pain, which causes me to use a walking stick. Sometimes when my Mum sees that I'm struggling, she calls me hop-a-long. It always makes me smile. =)

Fun fact, the system of dates follows the format of the ancient Chinese dating system, so you’re actually able to figure out how many dates they checked. It’s been determined that Aang and Sokka checked four months worth of dates to find the eclipse. Keep that in mind for the future. They checked four whole months worth of dates.
Hector Elizondo voices Wan Shi Tong, and his portrayal of such a sinister librarian is amazing. I'm unable to watch the part where the Sandbenders kidnap Appa. That just hurts my soul.
Wan Shi Tong is my favorite ATLA character and is still one of the scariest things in this whole series, alongside Koh and Hama. With bending, the 4 elements are essentially, like, the base forms. Under each element, there are “sub-elements” like Lightning. Sand and Ice aren’t really considering sub-elements. Ice is just water at a different temperature and every water bender can do it. It’s essentially the same with sand but since most earthbenders don’t bend sand on the regular, it’s not something that most can just do easily. Sand is especially difficult for Toph since she can’t feel where everything is as well. Every element has sub-elements/skills. What makes it a sub-element is that not everyone who can bend the main element can do the sub-element/skill. It’s something either you can or can’t do. As of this episode, these are the sub elements y’all have seen so far: Healing - sub skill of water Lighting - sub element of fire Spirit projection - sub skill of air Seismic sense - sub skill of earth Lava - sub element of earth (you see Avatar Kiyoshi do it on that Kiyoshi island episode)
When Wan shi Tong first said their was a fire bender who visited his library for answers about defeating a war or trying to bring destruction. It kinda would be a more dead giveaway in the modern time for them, but technically before Aang froze himself plenty of airbenders in general had the arrow tattoo. It was usually a way to sorta mark someone that had pretty well mastered air bending. So just having them wouldn't necessarily mean you're the Avatar as they were more of an Air Nomad thing than purely an Avatar thing, but after the 100 year freeze and stuff it definitely is a bit more of a giveaway for Aang as the Avatar.
God, here we go, the loss of Appa.. like I don't think you guys realize yet just how tragic this arc's gonna be, it hurts so much :''( (When I showed ATLA to my mom, who has a really big heart for animals, it was absolutely KILLING HER the entire time Appa was gone, I had to constantly reassure her that he wasn't gone for good or else she wouldn't have wanted to watch anymore) Also I'm glad you guys recognized that Toph was doing everything she could, like damn, she was holding up that ENTIRE LIBRARY to save everyone's lives while also trying to fend off the Sandbenders to protect Appa despite not being able to tell where exactly they are because the sand makes everything fuzzy for her..
So to clarify, there are just four different types of benders: water, earth, fire, and air. Any waterbender can bend any water, any earthbender can bend any earth, etc. The quantity and precise movement of the element being bended depends on personal power/skill. Toph and Aang are both earthbenders, they could theoretically bend sand just as well as they can bend big rocks, it's all considered earth. And the sandbenders themselves could bend the big rocks that Toph bends, if they wanted to. It's just a different skill set. Moving a whole bunch of tiny grains of earth requires an earthbender to move a little differently from how they would move one huge chunk of earth. Water: liquid water, ice, snow, clouds, perfume, swamp plants with a high water concentration Earth: rocks, sand, dirt, mud Fire: fire, lightning Air: air, wind
@4:00 for what it is worth, ice actually takes a while to melt, for the same reason that it takes a good while to boil. It takes a good amount of energy to get it to change phase, so large blocks of ice can last a while and a thick walled cup will probably also last the day, especially if they are all together like that keeping their local temp colder then the outside and surrounding air.
The glacier is a wonder because it doesn't melt. I assume the ice has special properties to prevent it from melting. The reason it looks melted here is because the bar owner chipped and carved at it to make those drink cups.
"Owl hearing is certainly more sensitive than that of other birds, particularly at frequencies of 5 kHz and above. Barn Owls have been shown to use sound frequencies above 8.5 kHz to direct and make an accurate strike at a prey item." Yeah, wan would definitely hear Sokka even if he would whispering. x3
Yeah the whole thing about Professor Zei and his final little "I could spend an eternity in here" moment was basically him being like "yeah, this is where i've always wanted to be, i'm boutta die in here and become a library spirit and i am cool with that" - just heavily IMPLIED instead of outright stated.

I think the last book I finished was Shadow of Kyoshi. It's a good read, takes place 400 years before this series so the closest it comes to spoiling things is that he tells you a bit more about the last Earth, Water, and Air Avatars before Aang.
Ironically the last book I read and finished was 'The Shadow of Kyoshi' and I am currently making my way through 'Avatar Legends Core Book' for the Avatar Legends TTRPG.
It's been a few months, but we try to go to our local library fairly often. Last book I read was A Court of Thorns and Roses, which is basically Beauty and the Beast, but with fey.
I've seen someone with all 4 Avatar nation symbols tattooed on his back another with a portrait of Aang, I've seen dozens of Dragon Ball ones including someone with the Majin Buu M on his hand, and a person with a crazy Naruto Shippuden tattoo.
Thank you so much for these reaction videos! I'm always waiting when is the notification going to pop up on youtube about the new episode of Avatar. Could you please consider reacting to the legend of vox machina? Even if you don't know anything about DnD (Dungeons and Dragons), I think it's a fantastic show. And seeing what you enjoy watching, I think this show would suit you all!^^
I used to work at the library 😊 even if you don’t read, the library has many resources for other things. The Orlando Public Library even has recording studios. Just need a library card! Always free.
An air nomad gets its arrow tattoos when they have mastered the airbender. Aang mastered it in his 11 year. And he invented his own air sphere that the used to ride on. For a normal air bender it would take years of mastering air. Its like in bleach how Bankai takes 10 years to master but Ichigo mastered it or received bankai in just 2 and half days.
The way I see it this is how bending works in this universe. The fire benders not only bend the fire itself but also have the ability to manipulate (hot)heat; so anything hot they can bend like lightning and hot gases etc if they are skillful enough. Water benders are similar, they can bend the water (and anything that contains water) but also manipulate (cool) heat hence why they can change the state of water to ice and steam. I won't go into earth and air since that is spoiler territory.
I didnt watch your reaction to this episode until you finished season 2 because I knew I couldn't stop myself from bingeing your reactions until Appa was safe.
I stopped using the library about 25 years ago when I was a teenager because multiple librarians at different places accused me of not returning books I know I did. It wasnt worth the hassle so I just bought all my books ever since.
0:35 last book I read was The Rise of Kyoshi, part of the Chronicles of the Avatar series. So far there are 2 books about Avatar Kyoshi and 2 about Avatar Yangchen. The ones I've read have been really good, though I haven't read the newest Yangchen book yet bc I'm doing a reread of the other 3 first. If y'all want to see bending be used to kill I definitely recommend the books because they get a little creative with it

I'd like to point out that "shade in the desert is still like 90˚" is actually not true. The drier the air, the more difference there is between sunny and shady, so in a super-dry environment like a desert, shady areas can stay comfortable all day even if the sun is intense.
The last book I have read are: Percy Jackson&the Olympians (pentalogy) The Kane Chronicles (trilogy) The Heroes of Olympus (pentalogy) Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (trilogy) I have not finished reading The Trials of Apollo (Pentalogy)
So much like earthbenders can lava bend because it is adjacent to Earth and adjacent to fire I believe fire benders should also be able to lava bend or at least some version of it maybe summon the fire within the Earth and create lava and bend the fire within the Earth. Also chat GPT says that lightning is often adjacent to air I would say that would be the mix of air and fire
I'm left handed and I remember when I was in school i was one of the only ones in the entire school. Especially all my glasses. We used to play baseball for PE and i'd try and use a right mitten for my left hand and the coach after realizing this asked if i was left handed to which I said "Yes." And so he ended up ordering left handed gloves. I'd even use right handed scissors they had with my left. And writing in spiral notebooks was always anyways goes I had to rest my arm, reach over the spial part.
When/if you get the chance I recommend looking up some ancient refrigeration videos on yt that show not too disimillar architecture from that displayed in this episode. Just a 🤓recommendation, I think it’s neat
0:26 to answer, I haven't been to the library in a long ass time, at least 10(+?) years. But that's not to say I haven't been to a book store! I was just at one last week
It wasn't an impossible conclusion to say that fire benders loose their ability to firebend during the solar eclipse, though the only clue that we got at this point was Zuko saying in the final of book 1 that morning sun empowers him. That being said, when I first watched this episode I sorta felt that Sokka is making a huge leap in logic and that it will bite them in the ass later. The title of the article was "the darkest day in fire nation history". Imagine if that wasn't actually anything bending related but just a surviving piece of paper from an astronomy related essay. Like "oh, on this day it was the darkest day due to the solar eclipse which is a true marvel of nature". Like... I don't really get why they all consider "solar eclipse means no firebending" to be 100% true when they had no clues suggesting that. Afterall, if just the absence of the sunlight caused firebending to go away, wouldn't that mean firebending is turned off during the night?
Well the death of the Moon Spirit in Book 1 is later referred to as "the Lunar Eclipse", so... I dunno, might be a difference between the Sun being on the other side of the planet and being blocked by the Moon. It probably doesn't apply here because spirits but in real life moonlight is just sunlight reflected. Again, here the moon is a literal deity but still.

I like how they called back to admiral zaho searching research about the moon spirit
3:45 made me cackle, dude has clearly never been to a desert before, 90 degrees is lucky
"I bet some people on the planet have the avatar tattoo."
Look for Kiran Badloe 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He changed his hair for the olympics.
No, the Darkest Day happened sometime way in the past. Iroh "lost" because he gave up and broke down after his son died.
Zei really searched for Knowledge his whole life, Rip
Wan Shi Tong had Tea with Iroh for sure
The way I see it this is how bending works in this universe. The fire benders not only bend the fire itself but also have the ability to manipulate (hot)heat; so anything hot they can bend like lightning and hot gases etc if they are skillful enough. Water benders are similar, they can bend the water (and anything that contains water) but also manipulate (cool) heat hence why they can change the state of water to ice and steam. I won't go into earth and air since that is spoiler territory.
Last book i read was a donald duck comic in the high school library while i was skipping class😂
So many times they do their predictions and i have to laugh so hard for how accurate they are 😂
6:19 "Guys who put,put my fox on the Y axis"
-if you know you know
0:35 last book I read was The Rise of Kyoshi, part of the Chronicles of the Avatar series. So far there are 2 books about Avatar Kyoshi and 2 about Avatar Yangchen. The ones I've read have been really good, though I haven't read the newest Yangchen book yet bc I'm doing a reread of the other 3 first. If y'all want to see bending be used to kill I definitely recommend the books because they get a little creative with it
Sorry for rambling lol I just want everyone to know about the books!
Ep 19 of me asking for a Transformers Prime reaction after a series is finished on this channel.
And I'm awaiting confirmation no matter how many times I'll post.
6:55 Toph is so capable the others tend to forget she is blind which she probably appreciate
The only times I go to a library now is to vote 😅 I also love that two out of the three people watching this show are left handed. The odds are incredible and it’s wonderful 😂
Since this is the half way mark of the entire show. I like that they made the gaang for forward with fights instead if the usual escape route
I'd like to point out that "shade in the desert is still like 90˚" is actually not true. The drier the air, the more difference there is between sunny and shady, so in a super-dry environment like a desert, shady areas can stay comfortable all day even if the sun is intense.
Last book I read was “Where the Red Fern Grows.”
Me (hearing the professor speak for 2 seconds): Carth Onasi, is that you?
Did you know the arrows are actually for air benders who’ve mastered air bending so they get the tattoo to symbolise their a master
The last book I have read are:
Percy Jackson&the Olympians (pentalogy)
The Kane Chronicles (trilogy)
The Heroes of Olympus (pentalogy)
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (trilogy)
I have not finished reading The Trials of Apollo (Pentalogy)
So much like earthbenders can lava bend because it is adjacent to Earth and adjacent to fire I believe fire benders should also be able to lava bend or at least some version of it maybe summon the fire within the Earth and create lava and bend the fire within the Earth. Also chat GPT says that lightning is often adjacent to air I would say that would be the mix of air and fire
Fun fact Toph held the library up while Sokka and Aang checked for months on the planetarium.
This is definitely amongst my favourite episodes. Every time a spirit appears its always a banger
I love every episode involving spirits. It always gives off such Spirited Away vibes.
the last time i went to a library was highschool, but the last books i read was the Dorohedoro manga
You guys be ready. This arc will be a tearjerker because of Appa.
When/if you get the chance I recommend looking up some ancient refrigeration videos on yt that show not too disimillar architecture from that displayed in this episode. Just a 🤓recommendation, I think it’s neat
5:44
I will freely admit: Toph got me there first time I saw this ep.
This is the moment where the show gets darker...
Last book I read was Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
VERY Gritty Dystopian Cyberpunk Detective/Nior Series
I think there was an Olympian who buzzed and dyed his hair into an arrow like Aang's, can't quite remember
The desert actually gets cold at night.
Ah jeez here we go
Bye Appa
Oh early too
1:07 oh man-- I can't make a comment about this until like after the series ends
About what Aang would say
You’re about to start seeing One of the most sad stories from Avatar. Get Ready!
Hell yeah. Every single episode from this point on is peak avatar. Next one is my personal favorite
I mean knowledge on a knot is better than a wanted poster (tho still valid, it's technically a piece of future history), granted it's more of a sample than a manual but it's still decent
Poor Own Spirit, my man was just vibing with his book
You’ve reached a point of no return, you’ll always want more from now on! Great reaction guys
The episode has such a good balance in showing how strong AND weak can toph be, she can't see on sand, and she was holding the library. Also put sokka as a clever man rather than the fool of the group
Also she’s never had to bend sand before so it’s not something that she currently works well with.
Almost there to episode 12-13 the 44 minutes episode The secret of the Fire Nation
