The great era of everybody had a soloist and you knew who they were.

For what it is worth, I covered the championship in both Birmingham and Montreal for Drum Corps News. My all time favorite was “Let it be me” by Spirit. Jim Ott arrangement, superb soloists and ear and steel shattering sound at the end!!! Nothing like it before, nothing like it since.

It's not just the solos but the showmanship. These musicians could sell it like no other. So lucky to have seen and heard most of these performances live.

marched with Spirit in 80 and devils in 81. wall of sound you felt and couldn't help but yell. Anyone who saw us do let it be me is still talking about it.

AWESOME video. I got to play Walk Him Up The Stairs in high school before I really even could fathom drum corps, and ended up marching 4 years. Thanks for the memories.

You are correct, Jim was one of the all-time greats....Even during my DCI days there were so many good soprano soloist, especially with the A-60 corps that I would see on tour that never got recognition because their corps were not top 12. And while not on this video, my vote goes to Shawn Owens of Madison Scouts...

It brought back great memories watching Greg Jaroz with the Kilties and Fred Bell with the Guardsmen before they became Madison Scouts. I wore out 2 sets of 1978 DCI albums listening to all these great players. Thanks for considering me to be one of their peers.

Why can't DCI be like it was back then, when the audience had their socks thrilled off by volume, color guard and amazing M&M? Nowadays it's all directed to wow the judges, taking no regard for the fans. I stopped attending over 10 years ago. Sadly, it's just not fun anymore.

Jim Green it's not even really to impress the judges any more.... The corps staffs tell the judges what is cool and they are really just trying to impress each other... It's sad.

Agreed....cant watch it anymore....drum corps has turned into Marching Band theater....too much emphasis on color guard

An apostrophe is NEVER to indicate plurals--NEVER!! It's only for contractions and to show possession. So, it should be "solos", not solo's".
