You... You... You ARE the MAN! Have a two door XJ, and is near impossible to find a replacement. Found this video through a forum. Went down to the Jeep after watching, removed the regulator, and sure enough the exact part is damaged! You saved me at least $300. I owe you a beer Thank you so much for this video!
I just want to say thank you. I really appreciate how you took to the time to show how the window works and exactly where and why the window mechanism broke where it did. How to fix it instead of replacing the whole assembly. And finally put it back together. It really is a great video, very thorough and helpful. I now have every confidence that I can tackle my broken window and come out on top with a smile on my face, instead of the scowl that is usually in place after shoving my hands up inside a door to work on a window. 😉
Good thing you took that cover off to get those pieces out. I miss my Cherokee. Had a 2001 Classic, last year made. Traded it in. Went through snow storms here like nothing. My Grand Cherokee I have now isn't as quick as that light little Cherokee. Good job buddy.
Thank you! My wife was driving home from work this evening and suddenly the passenger window on our 1998 Cherokee just did a guillotine drop and disappeared. I'll be pulling the inner door panel to verify the cause tomorrow but I'm 99% sure what happened is what you described. Thank you for saving me well over one hundred dollars. Much appreciated!!!
Finally someone made a video on how to repair this problem!!!!! i have had this happen on my '99 Cherokee passenger side door (repaired), and now have on my Drivers side door.....
Thank you! Works great. Note for others, I had to dremel about 3/16" off the tip off of my cable due to a stripped thread on the end. Also, great suggestion to go ahead and take the gear box apart. Found several small pieces of the plastic and went ahead and added a bit of grease for good measure.
Thank you for a great video! Mine just did this and Im going wheeling this weekend, and its supposed to rain. I had the door all apart, except for taking out the window regulator and stuff, and needed to keep the glass up, so I put some zip ties around the base of the window bracket to keep it somewhat up. A lil tip for those that might be in the same predicament.
It's always the plastics that'll get you. I've had it cause problems in everything from a little plastic tab in a Saturn electric door lock to the cable guide on a lawnmower handle. One little piece snaps or bends and suddenly a whole component is usually junk. When you showed how it worked I was actually wondering if a person couldn't rig up some kind of thin metal pieces at an angle on the plate to catch onto the spring. Glad you got by with just a replacement bit in this case though.
Thanks so much for the repair video, the problem with mine is that the plastic sheath around the spring has broken off of where the gearbox holds it, I’m trying just duct tape right now and praying it works
Great video but for those curious watching, it isn't the same system in the Jeep Grand Cherokees. They use a steel cable instead of the spring to raise and lower the window.
just to add. you'll find that the speakers foam surround are shot after a long time. You can fix them its easy and it works. You can buy the whole kit for all four speakers for around 30 bucks I did this when I fixed the lock on the drivers door 68 Grand C.
Thank you so much for this video! I didnt know this was a known issue for these xj's! Now i can fix my brothers window that is being held up by screwdrivers;)
@805ROADKING The Cherokee regulator is different than the GC. When I had my 2001 Cherokee Classic, nothing went wrong with that truck. Never replaced anything but brakes, tires and oil. Windows never failed. My GC has been reliable (same 4.0) but window regulators aren't like in my Cherokee. But, 104K its still running great.
Bless You!!!!! I have been trying figure out what exactly tears up without taking mine apart. Just stumbled here. Now it all makes sense, except why make it from plastic to start with?
I did this on a new 2011 jeep as well, its just a touch different as far as I didn't need to dremel the old piece off, but the broken piece also ends up inside the gear, so check that!
i love your video unfortunately for me the metal repair kit part you list is no longer available so i guess im screwed because they dont make a repair kit of any kind for 2 doors but THANK YOU FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE
When I press the switch down I should still be able to hear the window motor working right? I press it down and don't even hear anything so necessarily this part is not the issue.
@daddytech There was already plenty of grease in there Buddy!! I did a pretty good job getting all the broken pieces outta there, good thing I took the gear housing off eh!!☺
thanks! doesn't it piss you off that the damn part wasn't made of something more substantial then it wouldn't have broken in the first place! Also when you go to the deeler they want to sell you the whole damn thing costing so much!
I personally would have put a little gear grease in the motor compartment incase there is any plastic in there too which i am assuming there is, or did you do that and just not show it ?
@805ROADKING yeah it is. maybe not having the other things around that you wanted was fate telling you that you really needed to open the housing up. to clean it all out. looks like a good cheap fix and i am alll about that but this time the cheap fix is an Upgrade. ! nicely done sir!
I just watched ur video n I just had the part broke on my 2 door jeep n was wondering if u could help me on where I could get the part at please n thank u..great video helps a lot.
@vidman008 Thanks Buddy!! Actually the spring/screw had a felt type material that was saturated with low temp blue grease along with the gear motor!! It probably wouldn't have hurt to put some lithium in the track, but I heard there's a petroleum shortage because somebody has been changing the oil in there goddamn tractors every week!!☺
Thanks for the video, I found mine broken today, pulled the door panel, was trying to figure out wtf #%$!&*....lol...found your video, now i can make the repair with your knowledge video. Peace man.
Thanks for sharing. FYI, my 98 Jeep doesn't have this type of Window Regulator, although, a cheap plastic roller is why mine isn't working. Wondering if a metal roller is out there, that can bolted or clipped on instead of riveted plastic. Also, for this video, could it be possible that it's for 99-01 Jeeps?
You know, my 03 Grand Cherokee has gone thru Two window regs, one was my fault. Don't try to open when ice covered! It's a flawed design, like so many other things, but the good outweighs the bad.
That fix is more than a junkyard regulator but it'll last longer being its built from metal. My 2000 Cherokee driver window works but clicks when it hits full up position so going to tear it apart today
Thanks for the how to vid Roadking...I just had this happen to my Cherokee today...could you please pm to me where I can get this replacement part? I sure would appreciate it...thanks.
Thanks for the video; Just got the part in, so I am going at it this weekend. Also anyone know what turns the motor of when the window is all the way up? mine just clicks when I get to the top.
Hi I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. On my Jeep, the window is held in place by 2 metal clips that bolt to the regulator. The 2 clips are worn and wil lnot hold the window when going down. What are these pieces called? I bought a new regulator and they did not come with it.
@805ROADKING could you send me the info for the replacement metal piece.... my 1997 Cherokee broke about two months ago and i haven't been able to find the part otherwise. thanks in advanced!
Thanks a lot, it just happend this to me yesterday on the passanger side door and i do not want to spend 200 bucks in the whole assambly, i realy apreciated this video, If someone can tell me where to buy the little piece. Thanks a lot
Good gauge, but you can buy a whole new regulator for the price of that little metal piece. As long as your motor is still good, which most of the time it is, you can buy regulator without motor and attach your good motor.
Thought this was going to be my problem but it wasent. On two of my windows, I had the little pvc tube dissconnect from the motor housing. This then would spit the cable out of the motor. Just had to glue it back together.
Where do I get this part for window regulator. I have 3 windows on one onf my jeeps and 1 window on my other jeep that have this problem. It would be gresat with the nice weather coming to be able to open the windows!
You... You... You ARE the MAN!

Hey, were you able to find the $40 metal piece? can you share where?
805ROADKING where did you find the little metal spring piece ?
You are a life saver. I just ordered that for two of windows. You have saved me almost $200.
That's cool Bud!!☺
Good thing they make that little part. Must be a common problem I guess. Great how-to vid...nicely done!
Good thing you took that cover off to get those pieces out. I miss my Cherokee. Had a 2001 Classic, last year made. Traded it in. Went through snow storms here like nothing. My Grand Cherokee I have now isn't as quick as that light little Cherokee. Good job buddy.

Thank you very much ,that is what us people in the third world are looking for as we can not easily find replacement parts. greatly apriciated.
Thank you! Works great. Note for others, I had to dremel about 3/16" off the tip off of my cable due to a stripped thread on the end. Also, great suggestion to go ahead and take the gear box apart. Found several small pieces of the plastic and went ahead and added a bit of grease for good measure.
Thank you for the repair video my friend. I couldn't have done it without it. We are back up and running again. Thanks!!!

@edzgarage Thanks Ed!! I'll have to search that video!! I think Toyota uses those Denso units too!!☺
i love your video unfortunately for me the metal repair kit part you list is no longer available so i guess im screwed because they dont make a repair kit of any kind for 2 doors but THANK YOU FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Try googling Steiger Performance, they have the kit it's twice the price and they have instructions for installing it in a 2 door!!☺
AWESOME video!!!👍👍👍
Thank you Nick!! I appreciate you checkin' it out and your kind comment!!☺
@pimpinpenz Thanks Buddy!! I appreciate you taking valuable time from your well deserved vacation to comment!!☺
