    We fly to Los Angeles for the CureSMA Conference, where we were doing several speaking engagements. Our travel to the conference was slightly complicated by a number of busses without working wheelchair lifts. Thankfully, everything with the flight was exceptionally smooth!

    Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
    Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
    Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

      Bobbi Young kinda bitchy if you ask me. It’s not his fault. Obviously he checked the bus before departure and I’m sure the lift was working sometimes things go wrong and you can’t help it I thought it was very rude to get upset with the driver. Not a good look made her look bad. Instead of waiting so longing they should’ve made arrangements right away instead of just sitting there complaining.

      @@desaraebarber881 they had arraignments, the bus that had a broken lift was their arraignment, it wasnt just that bus either, apparently all of their buses had a lift problem. "Obviously" if they would regularly check the lifts, like they are supposed to, it would have been addressed before this inconvenient situation unraveled.
      Hanna is really good about calling in advance and asking about wheelchair accessibility. This isn't a situation where they failed to do their part, it's a situation where companies and their employees fail to do their jobs. They paid for a service, like everyone else, and they are entitled to the same treatment and services as anyone else.
      Should they be happy that the bus driver abandoned them and the 2nd bus never showed up?

      He explained but not once did anyone apologize or offer to help them find a solution. The family paid for a reservation, 2 non-inspected buses had an issue then after waiting almost 2 Hours they were basically told "can't happen, figure it out yourself". In my state, buses or trains can't leave the station without completing&submitting a check list inspection! If not done the driver could be reprimanded or fired if it's a recurring issue. The cab wasn't recommended at any point until they had already waited so long and called twice. Other companies have SLAs of not letting the customer wait beyond a certain threshold, to have a quick TAT so the person has the best experience. Candidly, if the family pressed more they would be due reparations for the company insisting to have them wait outside in the elements with no seating. Paying for their cab is bare minimum reparation and doesn't undo the horrible time they had, time wasted, any engagements they could have missed and worst scenario any medical deadlines (like having medication at home or at a facility). The driver should have said Call in as soon as they knew it was broken(or he or the 2nd person should have called), then CS should have issued a cab right then. If I had a bus driver basically tell me "Welp can't help you disabled folks so just wait"*walks away* 'for how long?' "call and figure it out" Yeah I'd have a disappointed frown. Promise I'm not a Karen(Neither was the mom!), this is a legitimate business expectation held in many companies. Imagine waiting 2 hours for dinner you paid for in advance then to be told "uhh we cant make your food.. Call corporate for help" *walks away*

      That’s because a very small portion of people use wheelchairs. It’s sucks, but to make things wheelchair accessible they need to spend a lot of money for something that is very rare. I have seen very few wheelchair people in my whole life, I think I’ve only seen one or two use a bus in my 24 years.

    • @violetwennberg6482

      The bus issue was not the fault of the SMA conference as far as I know. They coordinated with bus company, I'm sure, but all the bus company probably told them is that they have a bus that is accessible for wheelchairs. It's all on the bus company itself for not being prepared with a bus with a working lift.

Both the original and the 'replacement' bus destined to take me to San Antonio and Austin had wheelchair lifts that didn't work, so I never left my city of origin, much less my destination. It's a frustrating issue all around, and it's sad to see this happening so often. I'm glad they at least compensated you all for the cab.

Then to finally get out I had to sit on the lift while they manually cranked the lift down...it took about 30-minutes. Smart for not getting on Shane!

    I love your videos! I do agree with people that the bus driver deserves to stay anonymous ... the bus company doesn’t, they messed up for sure, I just don’t know if it’s fair to show that man’s face and put him/the company on blast when he’s just trying to make a living

    If you say something to Disney your probably get free stuff. Disney is great like that, tell a park staff though not a hotel staff and be clear that the bus was affiliated with them. My mom did something like that just try to be nice an let the park know, we got free fast past bands for us both!!! They want you to be happy and come back!!!
    Also the air port learned and improve... props 🙌🙏🙌🙏

    It's funny how rudimentary lifts/ramps work 100% out of 100% time versus automatic ones. I was sarcastically laughing when the taxi driver pulled his ramp/lift out. xD Gosh. The irony.
    Also like another comment said. The bus company should have checked the lifts for working order. If you exchange/compare the lift to the engine or another vital part and have that go out, immediate fix or out of order. Lifts/accessibility? Who cares/uses them?! Let's cause a hassle. :D Gosh the problems with accessibility these days.
    In addition, bravo to Delta for handling you sooo well. Although, like you've said, they should create wheelchair accessible planes. But the loss of money, space, seats, accommodations, intelligence, etc. would of course be too much pocket change to loose.

    Why is everyone dragging that bus driver as if he had anything to do with the lift not working? Sometimes there's only so much you can do. It's the overall company DISNEY that needs to figure all that out.

    • @Marzeonthego

      The BUS DRIVER already had a person in one of the wheelchair spots ( there are 2 -3 per bus, although I have never seen a bus use 3 ) . Disney also sub-contracts their Magical Express buses. In Florida they are MEARS TRANSPORTATION....and...they have the ability to contact BY RADIO...the dispatchers. The BUS DRIVER should have been the one to call the issue in. The way he "parked" and the way he tried to make the young lady get to his bus was also unprofessional. Disney should be notified, absolutely, if for any other reason but to terminate their contract with that company!!

    • @CastellonZamora

      @@Marzeonthego if the other wheelchair was already on the bus then do you not think that obviously knew how to do things right the first time? I also work in the theme park industry and a lot of times guests get crazy w us about things that a "low level" employee has very little to do with.

    • @Marzeonthego
      @Marzeonthego 5 років тому

      @@CastellonZamora No. He did NOT"know how to do things correctly " as far as a guest experience. HE is the one who is the 1ST contact with a guest. HE is the one that should have called dispatch and arranged for transportation. He ALSO didn't apparently know to PULL TO THE CURB CLOSEST to said guests, in the handicapped area, in order to attempt his boarding. I too have worked in the Entertainment/ Theme park industry ( 2 different companies, one being the biggest competitor to The Mouse) and the 1st thing they teach you is how to maximize Guest experience, even to the "lowest level" employees.

    not trying to be rude but you guys sure seem to complain a lot. sometimes things happen. sometimes inconveniences happen. it's not the end of the world. they paid for your taxi ride.

    • @SquirmyandGrubs
      @SquirmyandGrubs  5 років тому +5

      We weren’t trying to complain so much as make a vlog about our experience. It’s hard to talk about waiting two hours for multiple buses only to find out their lifts are “broken” without sounding like you’re complaining. This was also after traveling for 9 hours of traveling, so yes, we were tired. It was annoying. You may not experience accessibility issues in your life, but they happen almost every day to people with disabilities and it can be really tiresome.

    • @ecologist_to_be

      Try being disabled and being in these situations sometimes several times a day!TRUST ME you'd be complaining too. Ever since i became a chair user my life has become on endless rants due to idiots, crap accessibility etc

    • @mybonneval

      I agree. S&G's think the world needs to cater to his excessive special needs. Things break down. Newsflash: The world does not revolve around disabled people. If you insist on traveling the world get used to the inconveniences. Traveling isn't fun for anyone these days. Don't expect it to be fun because you think you are "special".
