At around 8 mins, you've incorrectly stated that you cannot click on a cut in the Avid timeline to invoke the single/double rollers. In fact, you can do this if you enable the Smart Tools in Avid. This makes it behave very much like Premiere. The Trim mode was the original way Avid handled trimming, but they introduced the Smart Tool some years ago to satisfy editors who wanted this feature. Also, there is a default shortcut key for entering Trim Mode (assuming you haven't remapped this key). The shortcut is the U key. There's also default shortcut keys of P, [ and ] which invoke the various types of trims.

Well technically I'm not incorrect b/c you need smart tools to activate that ability. And I just didn't want to go down that rabbit hole for this video. But you raise a good point. I'm working on several shorts where I make addendums to previous posts and I'll definitely make one addressing this. Thank you for pointing this out. Much appreciated 🙏🏽

If the trim playhead in Premiere moved along the timeline while trimming (as it does in Avid) so one can see the direction of the trim; then it would truly be "dynamic" as Adobe calls it.

I think I may know what's going on for you. Go up to the pulldown menu [I think it's under File pulldown] and open settings > Composer settings > move tab > Make sure you have Ignore Track Selectors checked both up top and then again the very last checkbox. Let me know if that helps.

@@nleacademy first of all, i like the way you teach. thats my kinda humor :) I know Avid has a much steeper learning curve than Premiere but if you really dig into it, AVID outshines Premiere a lot. Premiere copied most of the Trim functions but imho they always missed the icing on the cake. If you just trim 1 or 2 tracks Premiere behaves OK. But if you have to Trim like 30 Tracks on different positions in different directions your might be in Trouble with Premiere. I´m a Editor since the 90th and i grew up with AVID so i know lot´s of tricks. I´m also training Editors since years. Most of my students prefer AVID over Premier after knowing all the little bells and whistles. Especially editing long form content. In the end it dosn´t matter with program you use course both get you over the finish line. But i think if you know how, AVID is the faster and more reliable option. Check out the official training videos to find out what AVID is capable of.

Aw thank you. The compliment is much appreciated. I've been on Avid since 1996. Was my first NLE and I love. One of the reasons i started this channel was to demystify Avid for folks. I thought if they could see a direct comparison that would help them. I've actually got an entire course online to teach Avid specifically to Premiere users but anyone could take the course. And I mentor professional editors as well who get this course for free when they sign up for mentorship. It's pretty comprehensive. From ingest to online. It'll set anyone up for success on Avid. You can check out the landing page here... www.nleacademy.com/masteravid
And agreed it doesn't matter which you use. It's all about story. I just want to help folks to be able to stop thinking about the tech so they can free up their minds to tell the story.
Where are you teaching? I've been teaching for years as well [in between being a freelance editor]. Always stoked to meet another kindred spirit. Especially one who can appreciate my sense of humor 😆

@@nleacademy Hi Diana, yes, its all about the story and if you think to much about operating you´re tools, you have no space left in you´re brain to talk to your´re client or building you´re movie. I think if you want to do the job well it's important to improve your skills. I started in the early 90th as well, back than there was AVID and Lightworks. They cost a fortune and rendering 10 disolves gave you enough time for a proper cigarette break. I live in Germany. Here I work for a large service provider for television and film. I train our trainees and freelance editors, among other things. I like you´re landing page and im happy to see somebody keeping the AVID flag up in the sky. In my opinion it is the fastest, most stable tool for creating a movie.
