Deep Purple´s version, called "Hallelujah", was the original release. Recorded in June 1969, first record by the new Mark II line-up including Roger Glover (bg) and Ian Gillan (voc), released as 45 Harvest HAR 5006 [0C 006.90510 M], 25.07.1969. The writers Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway released their own records as David & Jonathan, on EMI Columbia. Their biggest hit was "Lovers Of The World Unite", they also released the very first coverversion of a "Sgt. Pepper"-song: "She´s Leaving Home" [Columbia 8208] one day after "Sgt. Pepper". Like the original that version was produced by George Martin....and impressed noboby. Another version of the song, now called "I Am The Preacher" again, was released on RCA Victor by The People, Nov.1970.
The band Focus Three had a single, with two songs. One of them ( "10000 Years Behind My Mind" ) is a psych gem, while the B side is forgettable, IMHO. Derek Lawrence produced it...
hey, I listened to 10000years behind my mind! WOW thank you for that tip, what an excellent tune! do you know who is singing on that track? an amzing soulful voice! thanks again.
So, Deep Purple's version is a cover of this, isn't it? Or did they record it earlier? This is composed by Greenway and Cook, Blind Guardian covered it in 1995.
