I have shot several thousand rounds through the 20ga mossberg silver reserve international (i bought it when i decided to learn Skeet sport shooting) and I've got 2 points to add: 1) very quickly (sub 1000 rnds) i started getting what looked like gas wear on the inside walls of the reciever. I emailed Mossberg and they said it was normal and not under warranty which was surprising. And 2nd, at least for the 20, the hinge *barely* opens enough to slide a round in the bottom chamber, like even w a lot of practice i frequently have to push the gun "more openerer" to load it. Fwiw i bought a cz drake to keep practicing with and use the little mossberg as a buddy gun when a friend comes with, and they both seem better for it. Great review, great channel; thanks for your great videos!
I had a 20 as well, shot it super well, really enjoyed shooting it, but had the same “push it more opener” issue, and eventually had issues with triggers not resetting, etc.
When my youngest son turned 12 (over 10 years ago) I bought him a Mossberg Silver Reserve 12/20 combo for hunting. He shot his first Pheasant, first duck, and first goose with it. He’s also broke and missed quite a few clay birds. He still has it and still takes it out occasionally for Pheasants, but has since bought himself a Franchi semi auto for waterfowl hunting. All in all, very happy with it.
How is the build quality of the Franchi semi autos , I don't mind the recoil of the inertia guns. I have a 1953 Auto 5 made in Belgium and the Franchi is supposed to be similar.
For those of us who shoot clays once in a while and may or may not hunt a “budget friendly gun” is nice to see. I personally have a Beretta 686 Onyx I bought off an estate for an extremely affordable price but that isn’t an option for most people. Love this review!
My silver reserve was only in the collection and safe for 10-months. Just wasn’t the gun for me. Hurt to shoot. Carried like a 2x4. Had to replace both firing pins. Didn’t get much for it in trade. But was happy to see it go.
I've downed more quail with this gun than any of my other shotguns combined. I solo hunt and I'm often forced to take difficult fast-reaction shots from weird angles and this gun is perfect for those fast snap-on-target shots. I have the 12ga and its a lot more agile than the 20ga semi-autos we have. It's nice being able to break the action and carry over the shoulder on the trek back to the truck. I never worry about this gun either because its not a piece of fine art like a lot of other O/Us.
I have the Silver Reserve II and it is in 410 bore. It does not have screw in chokes. Top barrel measures in at .377 inches bottom at ,383 point of impact is spot on . I like it , thinking of getting one to shoot 5 stand with if my Auto 5 or Remington 870 Fieldmaster is not up to the task. Practice and practice and not falling into the old habits of sighting the shotgun and stopping the swing , bad habits easily picked up. Thankyou , for the money Mossberg seems to have done a great job on this import.
Great review! Funny thing I noticed is that I could tell right off the bat that this shotgun was made in turkey just watching the intro, they all have that big bold font on the barrel!
I've got the older version of this firearm and it was a very nice gun to shoot. My biggest issue was I did end up snapping a firing pin at about the 12,000 round mark, and trying to get a replacement pin has been an issue. Unfortunately the gun is still sitting on my bench waiting for the new pins, but I am looking forward to getting it up and going again. For the money though, the gun was great and was comfortable to shoot for longer periods including 5-stand and sporting clays competitions. I did install Carlson's choke tubes and I will say for my gun they did help the patterning quite significantly so I agree with you that they are needed on the gun.
If I was serious about sporting clays I wouldn't even consider this gun. But for chasing pheasants or chukars and sporting clays a few times a year, this gun would work. The light weight is always a plus trampling thru a field or some snow.
Glad to see this review come out. I bought a gold reserve black label a month ago and have generally been happy with it except for the fact that I haven’t seen any other options for chokes on it. Curious if the chokes on the silver reserve and gold reserve are interchangeable.
I have the gun and I was very impressed with the performance on the trap and skeet range. Right out of the box I hit very well. I would compare it with the Remington 870 as a skeet shooter.
Today I bought my second Silver Reserve. I bought the first one more than 10 years ago. With the first one I shot 4 boxes of trap a week for several years. A firing pin broke during a round but I had the top barrel left. I miss that second barrel so I found this in Delavin WI. I just don't have a lot of money and this will do.
Ive got a 12 and 20, had 2 send 12 back twice, once because of broken firing pin, once saftey spring broke, ive put tons of rounds though so no complaints. I enjoy field/short slick stocks way more than trap guns, i have a browning cynergy which i love but i usually always grab mossberg because cynergy is too nice 2 hunt with tbh. Good review, also both mine r the version before this
As a Left Handed Shooter, I would like to know which Brands of Over/Under Shotguns have a "Natural" Cast Stock, so I know what to look for & what to stay away from... Thanks So Much
I’ve owned mine for about 8 to 10 years mossberg silver reserve international 12 gauge haven’t had any problems shooting dove or skeet, but I’m wondering is it good for duck hunting
Hi Steve . As for missing over the top second barrel, I have issues before with other guns and the top barrel actually was shooting high . on the pattern board .👍👍
My silver is engraved and if from the turkey foundation. I can't remember the name. Been a long day. But it onlys see s a few hunts a yr. I can shoot it one handed with 3 inch loads and not feel a thing. But I only duck hunt with it once or twice a season. Great dove gun, but I think the wood is on the cheap side
@@TargetFocusedLife yes what’s holding the shotgun those two looking U-shaped holders I’ve been looking all over the Internet for those things was just curious where you got them from. Thanks, Steve.
I have shot one quite a bit. It fit and balanced about like a wet 2X4. It felt like it would take two Missouri Mules and a stick of dynamite to pull the trigger. No thanks.
@@chaseacklam6174 The difference between us is I have shot this junk and many better guns. You get what you pay for, and there is no longevity to cheap suff. When the firing pin breaks or the second barrel fails you may understand.
@@Mauser304 “There’s no longevity for cheap stuff” meanwhile literally millions of decades old 870s are used every day. I guess the real difference between us is that I maintain my firearms
I don't know if it is still the case, but when mossberg first released this gun they had a mechanical safety that would not allow the gun to fire while being pointed at the ground. This gave us issue shooting ground game such as rabbits.
A good friend of mine has the Mossberg Silver Reserve in 12 gauge. I’ve shot it a few times. The gun feels overly heavy in the hand, has an extremely heavy trigger, and tons of recoil. Not a gun I care to shoot ever again.
I have used this one. Doesn’t pattern well no matter what choke you use ( not talking about the after market ones). Don’t like it that much. For the same price I’d rather pick a used Baikal.
i dont think any butt pad works id just rather have a hard one they dont hang up on clothes hit shoulders at the gym get some padding lol im talking to myself to
You need to check your specs again. All of these guns have an aluminum receiver, not steel like you said. But they all have a steel breech plate. You won’t wear one out. But they are aluminum. I got mine last year for $550.
As with anything, budget is relative. In pump guns 600-800 would be approaching higher end. In over/unders, it's pretty much the bottom end price you're gonna pay for something with no frills that works. Anything under like 1k-1.5k is considered budget in over/unders. If you disagree, then move to England and buy used, because that's pretty much the only way you're gonna get a working over/under for less.

Same for me. Didn't fit well, didn't move well, cheek slap all day and I couldn't adjust out of it. Just painful and now a dust collector
Can it shoot slugs?

Nice! I have this but the Eventide model, which is essentially the same I believe but the receiver is blued or black and it has polymer furniture.
What I’ve seen as a youth trap coach is broken firing pins are common on these guns.
What do you have the kids shoot?
1 oz #8’s usually
They had a recall on the firing pins and I was told it was they were too long. They sent me new ones free of charge.
I've shouldered this over under and I liked it.

Got mine for 635.00 at the big, overprice box store that starts with a C. Great little 20 gauge hunting gun.
Yep My "C" store sold me a 12 gauge for $699. I love the gun for clay shooting.
You should do a review of the new tri star matrix, their first inertia driven shotgun and there is nothing out there on them yet

This gun reminds me almost exactly like a TriStar shotgun that you reviewed a while ago.
I’d love to try the gun but even though it’s affordable I’m not ready to buy it and find out I don’t like it. Thanks so much for the review!
Have the silver reserve in 20 and 28 ga pay just over $600 for both barrels.
Just picked up a used synthetic 12ga. I think it kicks like a mule with 7 1\2. maybe I'm a wimp but my 500 handles buckshot better. I need practice.
