Been really enjoying your videos. Will take issue with one thing here.
Surely, shooting above league average on a massive volume of very long 3's, is actually a really encouraging sign.
I don't really buy the idea that he's shooting from there because he can't take 2 steps forward without getting his shot blocked . He shoots from there to force the defence to step up to him on every possession.
Also, shooting 35% from 3, in his rookie and college season, at high volume, is great. It'd be great even if he wasn't jacking up half of those shots from 30 feet. But considering that the half of those shots are very deep 3's, I don't see how you could infer that he's not a good shooter from those numbers. He's taking 6 attempts per game as the primary scorer on a bad team. He's not shooting 35% on 1.2 corner shots.
He only needs to improve a tiny amount in terms of accuracy and shot selection and he could be an absolute nightmare.
I'm worried that he'll never be effective going to the basket. I'm worried he'll always be a liability on defence. But the shooting concerns seem overblown at this point.

It seems like he went into the video wanting to make the point that Trae's size was an issue, and twisted a lot of supporting evidence to do so. For example, he makes the claim that Trae's inconsistent passing and deep 3s are a result of him being undersized, but does not give any evidence to back those claims up.

If there is anything consistent its that Trae is going to be a deep threat shooter in the next decade given more time to hone in on his very elite shooting talent. And he is using it to try force defenders to get to him and at the same time create more spacing. Currently John Collins is looking to be the future benefactor as he is already pretty good finishing off lobs, attacking the rim and improving his jumpshot. We'll have to wait and see if Trae gets more star quality teammates to work off his spacing and gravity.

    • @brendankane4186

What he's trying to say is that he's only shooting a little above league average from that deep, when it would only take a second to take a single dribble in for a better more efficient shot. They aren't actual concerns for his shooting, but his basketball IQ and taking more intelligent shots

I don’t understand why anyone would call him small the average point guard is 6’2 1/2 and he’s 6’2. He’s literally half an inch shorter than the average point guard. There are plenty of guards shorter than him such as Chris Paul, kemba walker, Kyle Lowry, Lou Williams, and Mike Conley.

When can a 6'2 guard (or shorter guard) carry a team to NBA championship? 6'2 height is a limitation. Iversion couldn't win a championship.. Steph Curry can't win it without KD and Klay.. Lillard and McCollon continue to struggle in playoffs... the history has proven and shown that shorter players (under 6'6) are generally a facilitating piece to a team. Come in playoff time when teams start to double team your superstar player, you see efficiency and performance goes down the drain. ie. Kyrie Irving (6'3 guard).. Chris Paul (6'0)... subpar playoff performance. Irving is a prime example of an elite shorter guard who excels playing with another superstar (ie. LeBron) when he is not the defense's main focus. Once Irving is the target of double-team defense with the Celtics, you see his performance went downhill against the Bucks. Irving is simply too short to beat multiple big defenders.
Then let's look at superstars who can win championships.. LeBron (6'8), Jordan (6'6), Kobe (6'7), Kawhi (6'7).. the list goes on and on.
Height does matter a great deal. Trae Yong won't win any championship if he is the only superstar on the team. He can fill the stats in the regular season, but don't expect him to be like LeBron, Kawhi, Kobe, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird... etc.

Re Trae's propensity to take really deep 3s: Have you read Tom Haberstroh's recent piece about how deep 3s have been more likely to lead to an offensive rebound? One of the craziest nuggets to me was that since 2012 teams have rebounded over 50% of 3s taken from 34-35 feet. Do you think there's anything to that trend and could it make taking deeper 3s worthwhile even if it hurts your percentage?

    • @agregs30

Intriguing stat to be sure but I feel that those long rebounds produced by taking deeper threes will ignite more fast break opportunities for opposing team compounded by Trae being the last man back to stop said fast break is not ideal. Those deep threes are truly a boom or bust proposition.

Especially if you have a threat that’s willing to launch from 30. There are articles on the Hawks’ coaching staff that back this

He got passing skills and hes tough, he could be similar to Stockton or Kidd if he puts his mind to it and picks up his defense. He should also focus more on setting up plays instead of shooting so many 3s. Hes to focused on making himself better and not focused on making his team better. Not a true point guard mentality.

Trae is fine he’s a hell of a rookie and it only gets better from here, he always has some of the best court vision in the league and when I saw him play his playmaking stood out the most to me it’s so elite not too many player jump out the gun passing like that and it’s been pretty overlooked by him. He’s definitely a better playmaker than curry, curry is really good but he likes to do risky flashy passes were trae just likes to get the job done. things that trae has to do to get better is, work on his handle, offensive consistency, shot selection and stop chasing steph curry but rather worrying about being the best trae young he could be, that could be for better or worse it all depends on how bad trae wants it and I’m not the type of player to put a ceiling on shorter players. Trae isn’t athletic but he has very high offensive iq he just has to keep working on his game there’s been way too many undersized players that dominated their position at one point to bring that up

The deep bombs from 3 are a product of the cultural Steph Curry craze. You hit a few of those in practice as a teen and suddenly everyone is starting to call you the next Steph Curry. Then you prematurely try and make it a staple of your game. If he doesnt become more efficient on those shots next year, I believe we will see him fire up fewer and fewer (that is if he wants to grow as a player).
Besides, I actually see him as more of a less efficient Steve Nash. His court vision is off the charts. He has never shown the Steph Curry-esque efficiency from 3 to be considered a Curry clone.

@@tae12364 notice I said Curry-esque efficiency is the difference. What makes Steph Curry Steph Curry is the fact that he can shoot crazy looking 3s and still shoot 43% from 3 for his career. Even in college Steph was shooting in the 40s percent-wise. Trae has never shot the 3 like that. He shot like 36% in college and is shooting 33% from 3 now. Curry shot 43% from 3 in his rookie season. I dont believe they are comparable

I still believe when its all set and done Trae Young will be known as the best player from his draft. Luka is great and will be great. And his stats will reflect more of an all-around game than Trae but I believe Trae Young's offensive impact can be close to if not already like Nash's, Kidd's, and Parker's. And all though he is no where as lethal a Curry from range and deep deep range. Defnders are still drawn to him from that far out because of his wiliness to take it and he has made them. The Hawks generally had these same players last year outside of Kevin Hurter and Trae makes them look different offensively. In fact Collins has gotten better as Trae has gotten better. Luka has a better all-around game, yes and for his career stats will reflect that. But Trae's impact can be beyond the normal numbers. Carmelo Anthony in his prime had better numbers than Steve Nash but who was the better player. Its debatable because of how Nash affected his team in comparison to Anthony. Not saying Luka is Melo or Trae is Nash but it I use it more as a general comparison.

    • @saiwaqa2573
      @saiwaqa2573 5 років тому

Its a nonsense comparison. Lukas impact on the game is undenianble. There is value to his stats. They are not empty stats and they result in Winning. You are kidding yourself if you think anyone but Luka is the best player in this draft.

      Ryan Jones
You’re out of your mind if you took my comment as me making a gameplay/style comparison.
The subject of this video was “Does size limit Trae’s ceiling”.
My point was that Alen Iverson made it as a 5’11” slasher who primarily scored his points by attacking the rim.
He also played in an era where big men dominated the league, so he took abuse every night and still found success.
When I said “Trae will be fine”, I was once again speaking on par with this video.
Not sure if you watched it, but the video highlighted Trae‘a skill set.
Trae is 6’1” and he is a sniper. He is also playing in an era where 3pt shooting and ball handling are the most coveted skills in the league.
So not only is Trae “taller” than AI, but he also plays in an era that benefits his style of play.
      Hence, Trae will be fine.
Idk where you got this impression on me comparing Trae and Iverson’s style of play, but ok.
