Arabs and Turks were enslaving in Africa 500 years before Europeans. In the African Slave Trade, Europeans were involved for a very short period. And finally outlawed it in our hemisphere. African slavery is still going on in Africa, and Arabs still get slaves from there. They castrate them though. Historically, far more Europeans were enslaved in the Roman Empire.
Most average folks in America never owned slaves but many races have been enslaved as indentured servants , even today. Seeing the opening where we realize that there was a time other human beings were considered property & discarded so horribly! One can't help but wonder how they became that way or if such a mindset will ever become a reality again? Sad what history has done in the name of power or god.
These evil bastards are still here, still full of hatred & greed, and still wishing for opportunities to abuse, exploit and kill others mercilessly. Although we should be careful chasing monsters, the problem is: we dont deal with evil people properly, and by that, I mean unspeakable, monstrous things. 😕
Dogs were a mascot of many ships. So were cats. They kept the rat population under control on many ships. Even the Titanic had a cat that was on it. The rich brought their dogs too. One of the richest passengers John Jacob Astor had his dog on board & after he saw that his pregnant wife was safely off the Titanic he went to release the dogs to give all of them a chance to survive. Imagine with all his money he had the honor to remain on the ship to let women & children take to the lifeboats. So in such times as this novel was written which they made into a movie. To see a dog in a ship was not at all uncommon. Also keep in mind in this time period hygiene wasn't as we see it today. Probably many of the sailors would have pooped over the side of the ship.
