As 12 year old boys at boarding school into The Jam and Madness, rushing down to the TV room to watch TOTP you can imagine our response to St Winnifred's School Choir!
Same mate, she was my best friend. She was always there for me and I looked after her in her final years, and yet now I can't do it anymore, and it still hurts 3 years later...
My Grandma hated this song! So my cousin and I sang it to annoy her. She got a tea towel, spun it into a ‘rope’ and whooped our arses as we ran out of her kitchen. I desperately wanted to play it at her funeral! She was tiny, crazy and fired on all 4 cylinders. Love you crazy lady! X
I bought my nan the single for Christmas 1980 I was 7 years old. Songs had meaning to them and it’s sad children of today will not experience making use of time without a pc or phone
This and Grandad. I am trying to teach my Grandaughter but how can you when all you want to do is cry. Miss them so very much. Hope I am making the same impression. Thank you for posting this. Means alot!
Kate Bush didn't stand a chance against this! It even knocked John Lennon's "Starting Over" from the top spot, but then the rereleased "Imagine" put him back in the #1 spot. It really just reminds me of Dec 8th, 1980. I was never a huge Lennon fan, but that horrific event certainly altered Christmas that year.
This made me think of my nana who died in july 1982, and i just sobbed like a little boy,..and i'm 42,.but its ok as i'm on my own when i watched this til the other half comes home from shopping!
My nan passed away today 30/10/22, this is the first thing that came into my head. I remember growing up with this song, nan I LOVE YOU and I MISS YOU but I know you're with uncle Dan and aunty Ria in a better, happier place
This made me realise i neglected my grandma my entire younger life, not putting in any effort to getting to know her. Now that shes passed away theres nothing i can do to change the relationship we had and i immensely regret it. Its funny how a song like this can make a man cry.
This reminds me of my last grandma who unfortunately passed away couple of years ago I keep thinking about her and it make my eyes water and sometimes makes me cry I hope she can hear me and everyday I pray to god to wish she could come back alive and stay alive forever I really miss her 1 like 1 tear goes away
This was out whilst in secondary school I'm now to grandma to three children god bless I see the next generation and I'll become a great grandmother I'm 51 🙏😂
This song reminds me of my grandmar when I was a growing up as a kid back over there in Leeds , England 🏴 RIP grandmar you was a good un👍 ♥️ (1920-2009). These kids most be my age now nearly pushing 50. I was 7 when this song came out it was a unique song back then.
how many of these little ladies are now grandmaws themselves, sitting on a rocking chair in the corner, knitting for their offspring? come on, admit it, half of them are!! /i hope they all grew up to be HAPPY AND POSITIVE in their lives. we are only here on earth for a short time and then we are born to eternity. i have a funny feeling this song has been sung and played at many, many funerals. i would be surprised if it was not. anyway, thanks for posting a lovely piece.
These kids would be around the same age as Mariah Carey and J-Lo and younger than Kylie Minogue, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. So they’ll all be in their 50s now and some are definitely grandmas, but not likely the stereotyped sitting in a rocking chair knitting type (not that there’s anything wrong with that). 🤷🏽♀️
i bought this song for my grandma when it came out,i was 8yrs old at the time.she has past away now but this song brings back very fond memories :) thankyou
Such a beautiful song my husband lost a Mum and my Daughter lost a nanna who she loved deeply she died in the old town in Benidorm she died in hospital with a heart attack the doctors tried to get her heart going but no use she sadly died my husband's Father was heartbroken please could you pray for her
To Queenie Tounge. A selfless, loving, caring woman who is very much missed and was underappreciated. With love, from your older and wiser grandson, Garry. ♥️
You'd never guess the little girl singing is Sally Lindsay wow she was cute and only 8 in this Xmas song I love this tune so gets in your head God Bless them all now as Adults xxx
First heard this last week after me and my dad listened to Grandad by Clive Dunn. My dad said this is the song for his grandma (My great grandma ofc) who sadly passed in November last year aged 98
Memories of innocent times. Lovely kids, each and every one! Full credit is due to Terri Foley for taking good care of them! I hope they are all now happy and successful adults!
Innocent times ? Aka Survivorship Bias, in psychology. You discard bad memories to the back, and promote good memories over time. This was a dreadful era for UK, and let's not forget who the nain host of TOTP was, Jimmy Savile.
The little girl with a lisp singing, fantastic. Always brings a tear to my eye.
My Nana gave me a CD with this on when I was a kid and every time I listen to it I can't help but turn into a blubbering mess. Oh Nana I miss you.
RIP Granny Reynolds

My Grandma hated this song! So my cousin and I sang it to annoy her. She got a tea towel, spun it into a ‘rope’ and whooped our arses as we ran out of her kitchen. I desperately wanted to play it at her funeral! She was tiny, crazy and fired on all 4 cylinders. Love you crazy lady! X

Happy days of the 1980s 😊
I had just turned 9. What a fun, lovely memory watching it every week it played on tv. :)
I was ten and a half at the time and in my last year at junior school! Remember the song very well. The kids must be of a similar age to me.
This and Grandad. I am trying to teach my Grandaughter but how can you when all you want to do is cry. Miss them so very much. Hope I am making the same impression. Thank you for posting this. Means alot!

One of the children is Sally Lindsay who played Shelly Unwin in Corrie
Kayleigh Winn have you seen her talk about it, she is so funny on the subject. @ 01:45 That's Sally Lindsay
I know of them, although I can't pick her out in the video. She works in one of our local charity shops.
Now they are grandmas 😬
They are probably working shity jobs and are grandmas themselves!
Nanny I miss you like mad 18/12/2017 your beautiful soul went to rest life is so unbearable without you this is a pain that will never heal 😭😢
I miss my nans been over 40 years but still think of them everyday the only comfort i get is we will meet again one day in the spirit world..
my grandma had this on seven inch and we would always listen to it. she loved us singing it to her
I miss my grandmother so much. She went above and beyond
I'm not sure how to take that .
Did she go one step beyond?
I sang this to my girlfriend after a heavy night of drinking......I never saw her again.

This made me realise i neglected my grandma my entire younger life, not putting in any effort to getting to know her. Now that shes passed away theres nothing i can do to change the relationship we had and i immensely regret it. Its funny how a song like this can make a man cry.
I feel the same way. At least we realize our terrible mistake even if it's a little too late. Don't be too hard on yourself.
For this to make a Christmas No.1 as it did is just the perfect type of anomaly about good old Britain.

My eyes are filling up now just watching this, it'll be 9 months to the day next Wednesday since we lost me Nan to Alzheimer's.

how many of these little ladies are now grandmaws themselves, sitting on a rocking chair in the corner, knitting for their offspring?
come on, admit it, half of them are!!
/i hope they all grew up to be HAPPY AND POSITIVE in their lives. we are only here on earth for a short time and then we are born to eternity. i have a funny feeling this song has been sung and played at many, many funerals. i would be surprised if it was not.

Who's listening this summer 2022? I remember this when. I was 8 years old ....how old were u?
Memories of innocent times. Lovely kids, each and every one!
Full credit is due to Terri Foley for taking good care of them!
I hope they are all now happy and successful adults!
One of them is a famous soap actress!
Assume she was their stage school teacher then, as one of the girls is Sally Lindsay .
Innocent times ? Aka Survivorship Bias, in psychology. You discard bad memories to the back, and promote good memories over time. This was a dreadful era for UK, and let's not forget who the nain host of TOTP was, Jimmy Savile.
This might be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen 😭 x

I love you Grandma ♥️♥️💕💕🤗
Cute kids singing about their old Nan! What's not to love? Although 42 years later I don't think this kind of stuff would sell to today's kids.
@jacobstorey4318 Indeed, too many Guardian reading lefties would cry about it being "Woke" whatever the flip that is?
Grandma, we love your inheritance,
Grandma, we do,
Though you may be far away,
We still want your bungalow
This is my Mum's favourite song! She puts her teeth in and sings along.
I play this for my grandma and she smiles
