From what I remember, and correct me if I am wrong, the L96 is known as one of the best sniper rifles, but was in fact a garage-built gun. Some gentleman made it in their garage, said," let's have a Crack at getting a contract for laughs." Then to their surprise, they get a call back saying," give us a sh*toad, we want them all."

It wasn't exactly made for laughs. The founders were competitive shooters creating high dollar precision rifles aimed at the sports/civilian market. They participated in the competition for fun and also to get feedback on their rifles so they could improve.

I fired this weapon in the Air cadets on summer camp. We were shooting prone on a slight elevation on plastic matting, i fired the first round and the recoil pushed back down the matting. After the third round the instructor stopped pissing himself laughing and finally took pity on me and decided to hold my ankles so I could complete the range test. I was 14 and very short. Happy days.

Back in Jan ‘91 I joined the RAF and did basic at RAF Swinderby. We were on the range with the SLR L1A1 and this lad in our intake must have been about 8-9 stone wet through and about 5 foot 3. He could hardly lift the thing to his shoulder and hold it there and when he did manage to get a round off it almost took him off his feet😂 Oh the staff were properly laughing. ( He never made pass out) Another clown ,after being told not to ,put his eye right up to the rear iron sight on a prone shoot and pulled the trigger. Made a right gash under his eye the dozy sod. I still can hear the scream of GET OFF MY RANGE to this day😂

The Lee Enfield Mk4 a firm favourite of mine, and as has been shown in Canada’s Artic to be perfectly capable of stopping a Polar Bear. They don’t come much bigger than that.
Sniper rifles exceeded my abilities but my Grandfather, Father and my late brother were all exceptional shots.
Me, I’ve been happy target shooting using a Martini Henry rifle.

The Canadian Rangers got a new rifle a few years back (2018) the Sako C19 .308 (Colt Canada is licensed to build them for the Rangers) to replace the "ageing" Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 .303 British rifles. A year on since the change more than a few of the Rangers were carrying both guns and use the Sako C19 .308 as a back-up still favouring to use the Lee Enfields to protect them from Polar Bears, Walrus, Wolves and whatever else they happen upon.
I've owned a No4 Mk1 Lee Enfield .303 British since I was 16yrs old (Now 54) and up until my shoulder surgery two years ago, it was my go to rifle for Deer and Moose. It's a more than capable rifle and even with all the newer rifles in magnum chamberings I have never felt under-gunned where we hunt. I've been looking at getting a .308 or 280Rem but have decided to look for another .303 British one made by Parker Hale and find a suitable recoil pad, or if needed have a gun smith put a muzzle brake on it to smooth out the kick.

However, the last weapon seemed to be a bit ‘snatchy’ on the bolt action? All three weapons though are formidable and in the hands of a competent marksman, much to be feared, although fear would be the last thing going through a enemy’s head.

What did I notice in this video ? The Enfield had a bit of muzzle jump and the bolt was a little rough to cycle. Rifle #2 had a lot less muzzle jump and a smother bolt cycle. Rifle #3 had no muzzle jump and silky smooth bolt cycle . Someone is definitely doing something right . All 3 are excellent hunting rifles from what little i saw of them. I just wis that fellor had shown the end result. You know the targets he was shooting at . I wonder if he had a big spread or was he stacking rounds in the same hole ?

@@jammybizzle666 The lee enfield is good ol reliable, wasn't the best of the best when it came to sniping, as it wasn't designed from the ground up that way, like the green meanie. However in terms of an all round general purpose rifle, its a great firearm. A jack of all trades that could be configured in numerous ways for different jobs, should it need to be. Probably why it was used for such a large period of time by both insurgents and armies around the world. The Kalashikov of the bolt action world, if I were to make a crude analogy.

Whilst I have no wish to cast doubt. One issue I have with his "style" is not using his left hand, on the Mk4 T especially, to grip the weapon and stop the rise after the round is fired. When I was taught to use the L42 we were taught to use a foregrip or the grip the sling to stop the rise and keep the rifle/round on target.
