Carey Nordstrand of Nordstrand Guitars and Pickups swapped out my Alnico 5 pickups for some new Alnico 3 pickups in my 70's Nordy vJ5. He is debuting them at the 2015 Winter NAMM show and wanted me to try them out in my bass on gigs and on some recordings!! So far they're awesome!! Super stingy with killer expression. I'm also playing through a new Nordstrand Audio bass speaker.
Couldn't be happier with all of Carey's gear!!
We have a winner! Attenuates that brittle clang that comes from Alnico 5 with the bass set up to be bright. These alnico 3s are way nice!
@Michael Quear Send an email directly to Carey from his website and he will definitely point in the right direction. You can also email me Steve@TheBassHang.com also and I can connect you guys. Also, thanks so much and stoked you liked the video!!!
1:35 alnico V, 3:18 alnico III
Alnico 5’s all day.The 3’s sounds like every other 70’s Jbass
good bridge growl comparison, 1:35 A5 bridge. 3:48 AIII bridge.
Wowwwwww.....
This bass sounds simply incredible.
Superrrrr......
I think it'd be nice to have an alnico 3 jazz pickup for the neck position and an alnico 5/ceramic musicman humbucker for the bridge position
Great video, bass and players. Perfect timing too! I want to replace Bartolinis in my custom passive fretless jazz 5 string (35" macassar ebony fretboard on wenge with Black Limbo body) and was lucky to find this video. So I checked out the options for the NJ5 with Alnico 3 - love it, but noticed on the order form there was an option to use the 60's wind with the Alnico 3 as well. I'm thinking the 60's wind will give me warmer lows and growly mids, but I want a clear and defined highend on this fretless. Which "wind" would do the job best, and/or should I consider a pre-amp combination? Thanks for any advice.
I like the alnico5's
This bass sounds killer! The difference between the Alnico 5 and 3 pickups is a quite subtle one thoug...
Thanks Michael!! Yes, the bass speaks for itself for sure, just a killer instrument, functional art for sure. I agree also with the subtle difference between the two pickups, I played the bass on a gig tonight and loved it.
Very cool! By the way, how is your '73 Jazz coming along?
The 73' is finished and is simply amazing!!! Posting a video in a couple of days, using it for demoing the A-Designs Ventura Mic Pre. So stoked with the bass!! Replaced the Badass with a standard vintage bridge, that's the only mod, other than that it's all original. Such a great bass, thanks man!!
Great! Can't wait for it! ;-)
seems to be a little less lows, but a bit more focus and a harder edge.
Does the 70's Nordy vJ5. 4:50" long pickups fit a 19mm bridge?
Alnico 5 pickups for me!
All day!!!!!
Alnico 5 👍🏽
Alnico V 1:35 Alnico III 3:18
Alnico V sounds cleaner a richer in tone. I would like to hear them with a Bartolini preamp.
It would have been more apparent if the demos were pasted one right behind another.
Hello Im not expecting an answer to this but Im just ask thought I would ask.
I sent a bass to get fret levelled and have new pickups put in brand new pickups.
When I got my bass back I tried it out and noticed a click like sound when I would touch any of the strings, so I remembered that I got pickups installed and took a look at the pickups it was then that I noticed that the shavings of the frets were stuck to the top of the pole pieces and even underneath the pickup after taking them out.
I was told to hoover it off and I did that as best as I possibly could spending the amount of time to do so.
I then tried plucking the strings very softly just to see and they still fizzle while string is vibrating no matter how hard they are plucked.
They are giving me excuses of "The exposed poles pieces are making them do that"...
That’s because it is
When a string hits the pole peices you get a click
Push your string onto the pickup and you’ll literally see
@@MIXMASTERDJCOBRA Yes of course it is going to click when you put a high amount of force to push the string alllllllllll the way down to the pickup, you can also get any metal object to get the same sound but this is NOT the sound that is being produced.
First of all, he is lying about the situation because the pickups are down low-but let's just say that the pickups were raised up higher than where they are, it STILL wouldn't happen unless the string is FORCEFULLY PUSHED DOWN to the pickup.
At the end of the day you can try to make all the excuses for these people all you want but the fact still remains the same, steel wool ruins pickups and I will not take a bass or guitar to a place that uses steel wool in their workshop because your pickups are going to get destroyed.
I was interested in AlNiCo 3 as the AlNiCo 2 pickups on my Am. Pro. P bass are very clear sounding ... in this case, however, I would say that the AlNiCo 5 sound better ... I’m on the 60s Jaco tone quest ... bridge pickup with powerful bass but with clear presence in the high-mids and highs register ... what Nordstrand pickup would you suggest?
What did you end up going with? NJ4 60s winding?
Kept my AlNiCo V Fender PV ‘64 pickups ... they can be defined as substantially ‘60s vibe quintessential, single-coil JB pickups, same as Lollar and Fralin so to speak ..
How are you recording the audio for this demo?
Hey Isaac, Audio was recorded with a Sennheiser MKE400 mic.
Wow, so it wasn't direct? AMAZING
Is this a 33" scale bass?
34"
34.5" on nordy jv5
