Axel died in OG2 but than they remade the two games in Original Generations and Axel was just "dying". Alfimi was dying as well and to exist she bonded with a dying Axel which resulted in him losing his memories. Eventually he got them back and went on crazy adventures with Alfimi. A loli is either a little girl or a woman that looks like a little girl. This is the broadest example of course, google will give you a far longer and more detailed explanation.
Is it ever explained what happened to Axel and Alfimi later? I've played Moon Dwellers and have the overall story down, but are the two still "bonded" or are they separate again? Since it feels kind of dangerous to have a bond that could kill the other half when one half dies.

...No you actually don't...I own BOTH GBA titles...and the only two enemies you get to control for even 1 stage are Ouka Nagisa and her Rapiecage...and Alfimi and the Personnilickheit...That's it...even though Wodan Ymir helps you for a couple of stages...(dying the last time, and Axel appears BRIEFLY during OG1...you don't get to use him or the Soulgain until 2nd SRW OG...or OG3 as some call it...that's for the PS3, and you don't get him until late in the game...and he's OP as all fuck.

actually there is 1 lvl in og1 where you can use him for a brief moment but he gets shot down quite easily derp

The two are separate. Alfimi healed Axel same way his soul healed her.
