I am doing Vipasanna for 7 years taught by S N Goenka Ji. I have done many 10 day courses and many days of service. I will say it changed my life in a very positive way. You can always start with Vipassana, you don't need to do asanas before. It's completely up to the individual, it's not going to harm you. I do yoga, I have tried many meditation techniques. I am in the field meditation and yoga by trying various techniques for atleast 2 decades. However as a meditation practise, Vipassana is the best for me. The course is free because for those 10 days, you are like a monk, you renounce everything. All the things you use is donated by someone so you practise gratitude for that and see how your ego is at check. You can surely start Vipasanna as a first technique, you don't need all the yoga techniques. One personal experience is, you need to take care of your body, however when you do Vipasanna, you will know when and how. I can only say, to realise this you need to practise the technique. All I can say is, please don't get discouraged by this video or any other propagandas.

Ultimately we are here in vipassana insearch ,coz we are not happy with our lives we are here to make strong our determination perseverance.
If we are physically n mentally strong it does help
But if u go with dependency n expectations that u will have sum miracle then u are overestimating.
As yr maturity n receptivity so u perceive vipassana
      It's a non sectarian
Unless u have tasted the fruit of dhamma how can u know its sweetness.

I can understand what you want to say, without any preparation siting long day might be difficult. But you need to know that there are various courses for beginners, for 60+, many more.. they are structured in the way to help meditator, not to harm. So for beginners- Don't worry about long sitting, they'd proper breaks, which help you to relax, save you from injuries. This practice has been going on for 2500 years and there has never been an accident. But unfortunately any accident occur, they'd perfect medication. Remember- If you are going to pray for the good of all, it is nature's responsibility to do all your good!

Things like yoga, meditation etc. don‘t have a long tradition in the western world.
People who do things beyond ordinary yoga, from my experience, are more than half non-mainstream. Many struggle with their lives.

I really hear what you are saying in this video. I am a regular yoga, pranayama, meditation practitioner prepared myself for vipasana. I did once in my life 10yrs ago. I was ready to go throu for 10days. I had a great experience and deeper level of meditation. However, ever since, I became hyper sensitive for everything. I became quiet parson. Minimising noise for every single actions I make which sounds perhaps grace but, not! I can no longer live like normal...Everything stimulates me. Not only the busy city or crowed people. Even in the nature, the sun light is too strong. The wind is too stimulating me, the sound of ocean waves or rain..everything stimulated me too much! Over the time, today, im isolating myself from the world. I can only live in simple way and I’m straggling to manage my family life.
To recover from here, I started to listen to my body, follow what my body wants to do… I don’t follow any one of gurus teachings.. I do practice any one of them just depending on what my body wants to do today.
Hopefully, I can go back to enjoy society and feeling joy connecting with the world again.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

"Buddha’s way was Vipassana - vipassana means witnessing. And he found one of the greatest devices ever: the device of watching your breath, just watching your breath. Breathing is such a simple and natural phenomenon and it is there twenty-four hours a day. You need not make any effort. If you repeat a mantra then you will have to make an effort, you will have to force yourself. If you say, “Ram, Ram, Ram,” you will have to continuously strain yourself. And you are bound to forget many times. Moreover, the word ‘Ram’ is again something of the mind, and anything of the mind can never lead you beyond the mind
.Buddha discovered a totally different angle: just watch your breath - the breath coming in, the breath going out. There are four points to be watched. Sitting silently just start seeing the breath, feeling the breath. The breath going in is the first point. Then for a moment when the breath is in it stops - a very small moment it is - for a split second it stops; that is the second point to watch. Then the breath turns and goes out; this is the third point to watch. Then again when the breath is completely out, for a split second it stops; that is the fourth point to watch. Then the breath starts coming in again… this is the circle of breath.
If you can watch all these four points you will be surprised, amazed at the miracle of such a simple process - because mind is not involved. Watching is not a quality of the mind; watching is the quality of the soul, of consciousness; watching is not a mental process at all. When you watch, the mind stops, ceases to be. Yes, in the beginning many times you will forget and the mind will come in and start playing its old games. But whenever you remember that you had forgotten, there is no need to feel repentant, guilty - just go back to watching, again and again go back to watching your breath. Slowly, slowly, less and less mind interferes
.And when you can watch your breath for forty-eight minutes as a continuum, you will become enlightened. You will be surprised - just forty-eight minutes - because you will think that it is not very difficult… just forty-eight minutes! It is very difficult. Forty-eight seconds and you will have fallen victim to the mind many times. Try it with a watch in front of you; in the beginning you cannot be watchful for sixty seconds. In just sixty seconds, that is one minute, you will fall asleep many times, you will forget all about watching - the watch and the watching will both be forgotten. Some idea will take you far, far away; then suddenly you will realize… you will look at the watch and ten seconds have passed. For ten seconds you were not watching. But slowly, slowly - it is a knack; it is not a practice, it is a knack - slowly, slowly you imbibe it, because those few moments when you are watchful are of such exquisite beauty, of such tremendous joy, of such incredible ecstasy, that once you have tasted those few moments you would like to come back again and again - not for any other motive, just for the sheer joy of being there, present to the breath.
Remember, it is not the same process as is done in yoga. In yoga the process is called pranayam; it is a totally different process, in fact just the opposite of what Buddha calls vipassana. In pranayam you take deep breaths, you fill your chest with more and more air, more and more oxygen; then you empty your chest as totally as possible of all carbon dioxide. It is a physical exercise - good for the body but it has nothing to do with vipassana. In vipassana you are not to change the rhythm of your natural breath, you are not to take long, deep breaths, you are not to exhale in any way differently than you ordinarily do. Let it be absolutely normal and natural. Your whole consciousness has to be on one point; watching
.And if you can watch your breath then you can start watching other things too. Walking you can watch that you are walking, eating you can watch that you are eating, and ultimately, finally, you can watch that you are sleeping. The day you can watch that you are sleeping you are transported into another world. The body goes on sleeping and inside a light goes on burning brightly. Your watchfulness remains undisturbed, then twenty-four hours a day there is an undercurrent of watching. You go on doing things… for the outside world nothing has changed, but for you everything has changed."

My dear friend I myself have been practicing vipassana from past 4 years. My mind got purified to a stable state now I can concentrate well, I have clarity in life as to do what. Though there were difficulties initially, one who has progressed in the path knows well that one can only purify mind by just observing as it is moment to moment without any aversion in other words it is called Vipassana and a day comes where one realizes it is the shortest path that one can get and no need of any preparation. I've sat two 10 Day Vipassana retreats with no preparation and it was simply life changing. I recommend it to everyone. Push through the difficult parts (and it IS difficult, very tough) but so worth it. It has to be experienced to be understood. It's like a physical philosophy. All the talk about "accepting the present moment" etc means nothing until you experience that through the body and there's nothing like mind numbingly long and painful sits, all day every day to embody the understanding of letting go, completely letting go of fighting the anguish of the moment be it mental or physical, to get you to understand, oh that's what it really means to let go. A complete mind blowing, pattern shattering revelation. .....But then of course you have to keep it up. Now THAT'S the hard part. Oh how easily we forget (we?! I mean me:) ....Damn it's hard to keep up the practice even knowing how incredibly healing and powerful it is. xx

@@sbgtrev Goenka gives hints here and there but everyone at the end of the day has to experience the process for themselves. Sometimes I don't like to explain too much fearing it might plant expectations. But let me go ahead and explain too much anyway. :) .... by day 4 I really thought I would have to quit because of the pain. But then during one of my sits, probably by about 45 minutes in when it gets real bad, I suddenly changed my relationship to the experience which changed everything. You see, I had been sitting there wishing for the pain to go, hating the pain, focusing on the pain, wanting to be doing anything else except what I was doing right then which as you can imagine only increased the pain because what you resist persists and I suddenly gave up, gave in, accepted, sunk into the pain, stopped calling it pain, melted into the burning, got curious about this sensation, it was sharp here but dull and throbbing there, I relaxed and let myself go into it, became the pain, arrived in the present moment which is of course the whole damned point, and didn't at all wish to be anywhere but where I am now, and I don't mean played a game in my mind about it either but genuinely arrived where I was and wouldn't you know the pain left. I moved through to the otherside of the pain like it was a wall that a spirit can pass through and I was blow away by the reality of what I learned. Don't fight. Accept the present moment. Just label things good bad painful pleasant just observe. I experienced physically the idea that had up to that point been simply intellectual. You can tell yourself to let go, to arrive in the present blah blah blah but until you do it's just mind games. But here comes the rub. This is something that I had to learn again and again and again. The next sit might've been pain free but the one after that again painful and again I had to go through a process allowing what ever is there to be there and not fight it. It gets easier to let that go. It's a all good practice for when you need to actually do it in real life not just on the cushion. - Hope that helps. :)

The whole purpose of vipassana is to get one to see reality as is, without reactions. so, when we sit continuously and do that (observing breath and sensations), it is natural for the body and mind to react with stronger sensations. Vipassana teaches how to handle such strong sensations with equanimity! We just need to surrender ourselves for the course at the center for 10 days and follow everything they say with 100% effort and determination. And also continue practice after coming back.
When the mind starts cleaning up, it stops generating all negativities on its own.

Thank you for making this video. The message is right on point.
Kudos for those who have reached that level of practice, that’s what the process is all about. I hope in this life time I can reach that level of peace.
    From my own experience :
I’ve tried to practice vipassana periodically for several days in the course of several years and my mind has wondered to the place where the root of my suffering lies. It’s true, it will enhance what you are feeling in the present. All the negative attachments seep thought the cracks and the mind recycles it. It loops around and makes the things you want to release much worse. Ive witness my own mind and it has dragged me to a much darker place, I too almost leaped to the other side because I couldn’t handle my own existence. What I comprehend now from this journey is that the ego can’t handle to let go of pain in a short period of time since it’s addicted. Like a deep cut. Healing takes time. It’s a long process.
    My advice:
If you practice this meditation. Small time increments like 5-10 minutes is the way to go and slowly increase it.
    Namaste 🙏🌱

Thank you for sharing your viewpoint. Personally, I went into the first course not having practiced any serious meditation or yoga before. And at the end of it, I realised I have never felt as peaceful, light, and full of love and compassion for every being around me. It was like everything that I had held on tightly to, making me tense, melted away. And I was able to see and feel things 'as they are', not with any colored lenses.
It is true that this technique is not a replacement for psychiatric or mental health care. I am training to be a psychologist too, and I agree with that. Which is why they also have so many rules and regulations to make sure that things don't go awry as much as possible. I am sorry if people could not experience Vipassana for what it is due to whatever reason. Love and light to them.
One thing I have a bone to pick with in this video is the part where you're saying how looking at things as it is enhances the troubles you already have. Other people who have attended the courses can correct if I am wrong. But the idea works in a two-fold manner. If you are having a positive or a negative sensation in your body, 'observe' it AND try as much as possible to 'be equanimous' (both together referring to looking at things as they are) so you don't react but are able to enjoy every sensation for what it is.
For example, if you enjoy summer but not winter, being able to be equanimous at the rise of both helps you really 'be' with both and enjoy both.
I do agree with two other points though:
Where you say that it is when you don't understand it, that's why you create problem for yourself. (Which is why proper guidance can be really essential, and hence going to proper teachers who can guide you)
Ask others who have practised or done the course.
The decision should always be your own ❤️

❤️ Just curious... What technique would you recommend for someone who is bipolar, serious mood swings? I know someone who is bipolar and suffers depression too. I feel medications only drug her up and she gets worse on the meds. She has stop using them. But every now and again, she weeps because the bipolar causes her to do things she didn't meant to do. When she is angry, she is very angry to violent. When she is happy, she is very happy and sunshine. When she is sexual, she confess she even take risk in sleeping with other men. When she is depressed, she becomes almost like suicidal. To me, the bipolar really has her messed up, and the meds makes her into a zombie like she is drugged. She tell me the meds don't make her feel well. She is warned to take them. But I too feel so sorry for her. I wish she could be a normal person. Maybe if she know a technique like vipassana, she can learn to manage her bipolar disease. She is always hurting others as well as herself. Do you have any advice?

However, once one is over the 5th day, the mind settles down (often earlier and many people have no problem at all from the start. However, I do agree with on thing in this video. It is good to learn Anapana from any old meditator (any meditator can teach you Anapana) and practice it for a few days till one can sit still for at least one hour and can keep one's focus on the breath without wavering for at least half-a- minute. I practice Vipassana and I totally agree with you. Majority of the people are not suitable to take this up immediately. I am an introvert and I like to stay alone, for me it was a piece of cake and I really enjoyed my time there. But for majority people they have never been with themselves before and staying completely in your own company is very difficult, plus they are not so good at handling the thought anyway. So yes they might even end-up being more anxious and worst case end-up in mental hospital. I think before anyone can signup for 10 days retreat they should go through simple screening.

You cannot achieve inner stability w one course. It's about consistent practice.you can't suddenly become inwards by just one crse.you hv to be persistent so that the very impressions that bother you and make life difficult get out of your system but w consistency. We all live outwardly , it's not easy to train the mind to go inwards.thats what the practice is about.honestly it's not about introvert or extrovert.its about winning your mind w practice.the idea is to not give in to the temptations of the mind. Anyways it goes beyond personality , it's to deep dive within.

If anyone is feeling stuck as a result of doing vipassana, I STRONGLY recommend taking the 10-day course again (and again... and again... ) as your circumstances allow you. Vipassana is a balance of awareness and equanimity. When awareness increases but equanimity doesn't catch up, one experiences the negative aspects of their experiences. Increasing equanimity is not trivial - and that the amount of equanimity is actually a yardstick to where one is in their vipassana practice. As equanimity increases, the experiences that are unpleasant in anyway will not be unpleasant anymore. The person who has posted the video will eventually get it if he chooses to practice vipassana. Otherwise Buddha would have put people like him at the gates of his vipassana centers to check eligibility/readiness of the participants😄

It's just not for everybody: there are serious mental health risks attached to these retreats many people are unaware of. Anyone looking into joining a Goenka Vipassana retreat, should first listen to the podcast 'The Retreat' by the Fincancial Times investigation team: warning, it's quite shocking. There are serious mental health risks of such extensive meditation. For some, it happens on their first retreat, for others only after doing many of them, but there's a risk of lasting mental health problems, including psychosis, and yes also for people with no history if mental health issues. This is also seen by scientic researchers, and it has been little acknowledged by the organisations behind these retreats. If your experience was good - that's great, but be careful ❤

NO prep needed. The 10 day session is an *introduction* to the practice. My last drink (after months of heavy drinking) was at about 0430 the first day of the retreat, so just hours before it began.
By the end of the ten days, I could scratch itches, massage my muscles, ignore constant mosquito bites, and observe my body's reflex actions to messages that only came from my mind. (only one other person in my car pool achieved the same, but those effects are not the goal, just a side-effect for some).
DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY LIKE I DID WITH ALCOHOL WITHOUT MEDICAL SUPERVISION. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. I just got lucky.

The course explicitly and repeatedly ask you before you start if you can handle the 10-days of silence and following of the 5-principles, right up to the point you visit the center on the first day and sign the paperwork. It clearly says if you have any physical or psychological issues, absolutely do NOT do Vipassana. If after repeated warnings someone still decides to join and loses their mind or has other complications, the technique cannot be blamed and nor can the organizers. Vipassana is a very powerful and practical technique and I am fortunate to have been introduced to it. I approached Vipassana without reading reviews or opinions of others and I instantly recognized and realized the importance of 'becoming' silence from within and not simply 'being' silent. The course is not there to make money and the principle of living for 10 days on donated money is a humbling experience. I recommend anyone and everyone who have the mental and physical capabilities of handling the 10-days of silence, please try it and see for yourself instead of just doing 'buddhi vilas' on youtube.

I agree with the part where he said that you are 5 watt and 500 watt energy you have to deal with. It's risky if you are mentally, spiritually and physically weak. But to reach that state you anyway become much stronger in all aspects.
But How will you be stronger to handle that much high power?
First by practicing 'Anapana'. Do Anapana very ardently and only then go for Vipassana. Anapana will be taught for 4 days. Do it very well. Then Vipassana will be beneficial to you beyond your expectations.

I attended Vipassana 10 day courses a lot after I found it. Then I had kundalini rising and became a little “psychotic” at least it felt like to me. Then I completely stopped every spiritual practice, connected to nature, ate animal foods again and focused on grounding. After a few years of not practicing Vipassana but started yoga again I attended a 3 day class in Italy. It was really hard for me but helped me so much with identification with pain. I am back to the daily meditation now and if I feel rather like doing yoga I switch it and I am not as strict with it anymore. I am finding my own flow with it and it is so helpful when I am feeling very emotional to ground back into my body and the present moment and watch everything pass away so I can be here now again.
That’s the best message my friend: listen to your heart but don’t let the fear block your heart. Wait and when the time is right and you feel like doing Vipassana again try it if your heart feels like it :)

I think you made a good point.
I had very intense experiences while the 10 days - really getting to be very focused, making the experience of what happens inside (and also outside with probably a karmic connection being solved). I wouldn't get difficulties afterwards, but just wasn't capable of sitting two long hours at home on my own and practice. I also came to the conclusion, that vipassana isn't the only way, it is one way of many.
The most impressive experience with it was for me, how powerful and sharp the mind becomes by concentrating on the sensation of breath.
But with this technique it is like with everything: it depends on the impulse, why to use it...Maybe therefore vipassana goes together with metta meditation?
Metta, as I understand, is made for the connection with the heart and with the heart and wellbeing of all beings. This seems more and more logical to me while writing about it.
Maybe people should start out with metta meditation to get the right impulse for vipassana because it is the integrating part?

10 days meditation retreat can be very difficult for someone experiencing emotional distress. That is why you need to be honest when you have an interview with the assistant teacher before attending a retreat. I personally wanted so badly to learn about Vipassana that I concealed some truth about my mental health. I don’t think I would have been able to participate if I had been upfront with it. However, i participated for 8 days. It was very hard at the end because i experience insomnia. I left the retreat in a total panic mode. However, when i got back home (to my family) I realized how that was transformative. I was able to finish the course with the online videos of Goenka. I struggled with a lot of doubt during the retreat. I went more that a year and an half ago. But it has been my life support since! I wish there are ways for people who experience mental health and can’t have access to the 10 days retreat to experience it.

A similar kind of experience I had.. was not fully prepared to take the course bodily. I experienced a lot of bodily pain and anxiety outbursts as there was no rest taken prior and was not on medications Anyhow could manage to complete the course satisfactorily. Video Discourses by SN Goenka guruji had a real healing touch at the end of the day. So yes priming with some type of meditation or physical excercise prior would definitely be helpful if one wants to complete Vipassana successfully

I am a retired Bank officer. Am practicing Vipassana for the last 6 years and found out what the real joy is. I lost my anxiety, depression and gained self confidence, energy, connection with my near and dear ones. I wish all the mankind should practice vipassana to transform this treacherous world in to a real heaven. This is the only path in the world ever invented that leads to freedom from all pains in our life.
You need not practice any yoga or pranayama. One who practices Pranayama may experience difficulty in the practice of anapana (which is the initial stage of Vipassana - Samadhi) as pranayama is controlling the respiration while anapana is just observing the respiration as it is - naturally.
Vipassana is a miraculous medicine for all ailments of this world. Don’t go by the advice of the people who don’t understand Vipassana.

If we go to gym and on first day we lift 100 kg weight then ofcourse we are bound to have injury. If we have physical issue and then we go to gym and day one lift 100kg then obviously one will get hurt badly. Does it make gym bad? No. I have attended the 10 day course and it didn't made me serious person at all. I started becoming more lively person, I started enjoying every moment whether good or bad. So if anyone is having any serious mental condition then they have to consult before going for any type of meditation. However I 100% recommend Vipassana to all, except those with severe mental health issues.

I've done a 10-day meditation retreat myself, & the thing to note is that everyone's experiences are different. Some people are simply not ready to experience their inner demons that come out through the meditation. In my personal experience, I encountered a lot of fear about things, especially because my view of Buddhism is very pessimistic, even though I had subscribed to many practices of it. Once the retreat was over, I realized that Gotoma's teachings were based on his own lens & perception of his own experience, but you are told to experience things for yourself. My realization was that Buddhism does not explain everything, & that you need to experience life in its entirely for yourself.

I have graduate level mental health education, world traveling experience, and years of thoughtful psychedelic usage. Nothing has positively impacted me like Vipassana.
