Maurits Escher was above genius - Could you imagine if he took architecture as his career - Steps going up - at the same time - going down - Emerging inside out & outside in - Eventually twisting upside down - Finally taking shape - Downside Up -

This makes me feel so much better about myself, he kept drawing and drawing even tho he didn't have a job and he didn't care about society's pressures and just followed his instinct, he never gave up and eventually became a master at his medium which allowed him to focus on ideas later on, the combination of his skill + passion for geometry and his hard work made his work masterpieces, but it took him a lifetime, he only started to get recognition towards the end of his life. I just feel bad for the lack of sensitivity towards his depressed wife, probably caused by the lack of vitamin D which is common in the Netherlands and possibly menopause plus complete lack of attention from him...

This is a great documentary, which I've only just stumbled across by chance. I've always loved Escher's work, and it's good to see him treated so sympathetically. I also enjoyed the surreal subtitles -particularly bizarre while Escher is speaking in Dutch. I intend to transcribe these, and in the process invent an entirely new kind of poetry. What a deaf person would make of the film doesn't bear thinking about. Thank you very much for making the film available.

Beautiful film. Escher said that it would be hard to say why he like the Italian landscape but to someone with more distance it seems obvious that the verticality of it, standing up like a canvas in front of one and displaying a collection of all kinds of contrasting textures and shapes, would have appealed to his sensibility, in contrast to the Dutch landscape, which is all flat.

@@candidogalicia6502 The Dutch have more respect for their native old architecture than almost any other country in the world. Cities like Amsterdam, Leiden and Haarlem are some of the best preserved 16th and 17th century cities in the entire world. Visit Haarlem and you are literally walking in a museum time capsule of a centuries old city that has been lovingly maintained for centuries by the local people. Escher as a Dutchman grew up with this Dutch mindset of looking at and respecting their architectural history.

@@g.j.koster1986 Yes, but we have to admit that his figures were twee, reeking of the petit bourgeois he hailed from. I have never quite understood why he made these fantastic metamorphic landscapes and then peopled them with garden gnomes and giggling newts. My best hunch is that he actually had a keen appreciation of high art and this was his way of needling the pretence that permeates that world.

I think I can really understand what Escher was trying to show us with his magnificent creations. The world is all of a certain substance--a crystalline substance of which is of magnificent structure, and from this mathematical structure fractals out something infinitely into the endless complexity of chaos. And perhaps the same is to be said about ourselves?

Jess, The light grey subtitles are 'burned' into the video, but you can turn off the "computer-generated" ones. While your mouse is hovering over the video, in the bottom right there should be a "CC" icon. Just click on it and the subtitles will disappear (click on it again to get them back). [ Note: The "CC" icon may not appear until after playing the video for a minute or so ].

in eighth grade, my geometry teacher had that mc escher sketch of a man holding a silver ball-the one where it gives the room a fisheye-like perspective-and i sat to the far right and front of the room for two quarters, so every time i looked forward i was staring at it. i liked that class because the teacher was really funny and i got to hear the older kids making jokes and almost feel included in it, and i remember i used to check out and just stare at the artwork while i thought of a life for that man. i used to walk up from the middle school campus alone and because i have short legs and would take my time so it usually took me the whole five minute passing period. in the narrow walkway behind the softball field on the way up i would pause or sit or look up, and i had two imaginary friends that would join me-a bird and a butterfly-and in my head i’d tell them all about the class, the picture, how the clock ticked. i didn’t know what the sketch was from or who it was by until i went to new york later that year and saw a great big billboard with it and “M.C. Escher” written across as well, and i almost felt like my little imaginary world got the surprise spoiled. anyway, after eighth grade i let the imaginary friends fly away so i could grow up a little bit, and about a full year later from the new york trip i sat in the same classroom for some student council business and read the teacher’s huge book about mc escher when she left the room. i haven’t thought of him in a while, but when i do, i think of the stories i would invent about that picture, and new york, and 8th grade, and the start of high school, and now i’m here. Very interesting indeed
