People are ridiculous calling you a threat to National Security. I am sure that was the birth certificate you used to get passport if it was only one you ever had. So if US Passport accepted it, it should be fine.
If you was able to use it to get passport it should of been fine. My kids are adults and I have a copy of a raised stamp of their birth certificate in my file cabinet. My kids turned out to be responsible adults but I got a extra copy just in case they ever need it.
Well, Jay, I'll tell you something. I did 20 years in the US Navy, been around the world approximately five times (retired now) and have been on Billion Dollar (plus) aircraft carriers and other ships and there were times WE, as sailors, were prevented from getting on the ship at times for various reasons (especially when we were in a different country). Security is a must and sometimes things happen. Once things got fixed, or verified, we got on the ship. That being said, those of us who travel a lot know the precarious conditions we could encounter at anytime, anywhere! Keep being amazing and I think you did a fantastic job rebounding from your birth certificate and passport issues while maintaining your sanity. Some people would have truly freaked out! I'm so proud of you! - Charles III

Hi Jay, I feel your pain. I used a picture of my birth certificate to board NCL. It was my third cruise and I had my three sisters with me, it was their first cruise. I called everyone the night before we left to make sure everyone had their passports. Guess who forgot their passport, ME! I felt so goofy. But because I had sailed with NCL before, they had my info in their system, so they allowed me to have my son send a picture of my birth certificate and I was able to board. I laugh about it now, but I was terrified on that day.
OMG, I did a similar thing. Our first cruise I did all the planning for the family. When we were driving to Miami, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to pack my birth certificate! In those years, a passport was not required. Luckily, I called my brother, he gained access to our home (has a key) and faxed a copy to the hotel. Carnival accepted the copy! I learned a very important lesson and now keep the proper documents in my side travel bag at all times so I know right where they are located!

A lot of what you spoke on today has happened to me too. Usually leave home saying “lets see what happens this trip “. Always a new adventure and learning lesson
Thank you for this. I made sure that my birth certificate has the raised seal, and it does; because I don’t have a passport just yet. I have no desire to leave the country through plane just yet, only on cruises. Also, I found out that you don’t need a passport for cruises if you’re leaving and coming back to the same port.

That's a big tip that I just received by watching your channel. You are informative and not full of ego and as I read through the comments I am happy to see that the majority of subscribers feel the same way about you. Hope I get to meet you some day. Your transparency and candidness is the reason why so many of us come to you first over many other cruise You Tubers out there. It’s one of many things I love and appreciate about your channel. Also, one persons travel mishaps can be a teachable moment for another. By watching things go wrong, we also get to see how it was problem solved and can be so much more prepared ourselves should we ever find ourselves in a similar situation. I for one am grateful you share the good, the bad and the ugly for that very reason. Thank you for always staying true to yourself!
I realized after already having my first full time job that I had a copy of my birth certificate, not my original or a certified copy. Not that it caused any issues for me, but I went ahead and ordered a certified copy, so I'd have it. I do think most do not know what we need and should have for a real certified copy of their birth certificates. I was glad you had some that helped you out with this. Best of luck for your future travels.
Oh geez, here we go again. This could happen to anyone. I just arbitrarily checked my passport for an August trip and realized that it would not be valid for the required six months beyond the return date. Had I not looked I may have been in the same boat so to speak. No one is perfect. We got the passport and passport card within 3 weeks. The old documents used to be returned but nothing to date this time. Thanks for the update.😎
Me and my husband recently renewed our passports (March of 22) I can't say exactly but I think passports came in 5 week and 2 and 3 weeks after that the supporting documents and old passports arrived. Mine first then my husband's. Sorry I wish I could be more exact but I'm recovering from back surgery (had it 6 days ago) and can't get up and look at the exact dates.
I know i have had issues when cruising prior to Covid with the Carnival Cruise Line. I am physically disabled and previously was given medical accommodations at the port of Galveston. During my last sailing out of that port I contacted Carnival and made sure that that accommodation would be available again as it was a big help in my mobility issues. When I arrived at the port they denied me this accommodation and it took me an hour to get someone from corporate to speak with the personnel at the port and fix the issue. I ended up straining my spinal issue fighting with the port employees as they had me stand in a mob of people while they fixed the issue. So hearing you speak out about these travel issues I can confirm that regardless of who you are and any prep work you do prior to sailing that things fall through the cracks. I really enjoy the way you talk about the current state of cruising and it has helped me in my own personal cruising plans. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
I am physically disabled also. My disability needs were ignored on Princess cruises out of San Francisco, but it wasn't my cabin, which was an accessible cabin. On April 11th-April 16th, I was on the Ruby Princess out of San Francisco down to San Diego/Ensenada and back. It is the ship that made the news that it had 75 cases of Covid coming back to San Fran about 3 weeks ago from the Panama Canal cruise. After the Panama Canal trip, it continued on to Hawaii for two weeks. That Hawaii cruise is making the news today as it had 143 cases of Covid. I wasn't on the Hawaii cruise, but on the one going out later in the afternoon. . All of the passengers on my cruise had to wait outside in a windstorm --up to 30 mph winds...for 3 hours. The line stretched back about 3/4 mile from the ship just to get in the building. There were elderly and disabled people standing in line for those 3 hours outside the building. Once at the check-in building, a few of us physically disabled passengers were taken out of the line, or it would have been 45 more minutes of standing (I have a walker). We left in 2 meter seas and a windstorm a few hours later...no muster stations, etc. I had a severe reaction where my face swelled up, my eyes were swollen shut, and I broke out in a rash all over my body. They had me go through all of this waiting/being exposed to the elements knowing I (and other disabled people) had medical conditions and disabilities. The ship seemed to be short on crew, and there were hardly any activities or shows offered. The crew wore masks, but generally not the passengers on the ship, even in crowds. We were not tested for Covid before we got off on Saturday. Not one word was told to us about the Hawaii cruise outbreak, and there was no encouragement to wear masks, etc. There was no Covid testing of my 5 day cruise to my knowledge. Given my medically fragile status and lack of activities to do, I spent the cruise in my cabin ordering room service. My private charter transfer bus back to Sonoma County had 35 elderly passengers, and not one of them will ever go on a Princess cruise again after this experience. I can understand one covid outbreak, but not two outbreaks on the ship, and then to put at least 2300 more passengers at risk on my cruise is inexcusable.
Hi Jay, thanks for the information on this video and so glad you were able to work things out to go on your cruise. Thought of you on my cruise this last week when we docked in Costa Maya with the Mardi Gras and the Odyssey of the Seas at the same port. Keep up the good work and "Take it easy".
Jay, you are a wonderful person to explain this to some very unkind, ungrateful people. Many of us understand life’s many pop up issues. It could have happened to anyone. Thanks for sharing your experience, it will possibly help someone else.
Thanks for explaining how you were able to get on board after originally being denied. I was curious and asked in the comments on that video. I'm glad you were able to board, my curiosity was about thinking of what I would do in that situation. Makes sense you appealed to a higher authority (the only thing I would think of), and yes the contacts you make in life can help your out. It's not about fame or notoriety, its about being a good person, which you absolutely seem to be. For uploading while on board, I wonder if there is some tech you can use, some kind of individual satellite uplink?? one of those that look like a little umbrella and unfolds into a satellite dish. I know some "off the grid people", and people who camp a lot have something.
They know who you are on that ship. Several people know you who work there. Just because you didn’t have a piece of paper does not mean you suddenly became a national security threat overnight. Your channel is awesome- thank you for all of your videos and working hard🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bro,,,aside from the fun and excitement you have because of your channel MANY OF US KNOW YOU WORK VERY HARD,,,we appreciate you and thanks alot for everything.
Things happen. People are ridiculous. Jay is sharing travel experiences that may help others that run into these travel incidents. Thank you for being transparent.
I always enjoy your info and have learned so much. You just keep being you and reporting what you feel is important. If they don’t like it, they can buzz off.
I had a flight canceled for our New Years cruise…we had to drive from Asheville, NC to Tampa! You are right when you say travel problems can hit anyone any time!
Thanks for updating as always. So frustrating to pay for good internet and not have it. Hopefully the passport arrives quickly. PS...have Mom check her expiration date! Happy cruising!
Don't give haters the time of day..they have nothing better to do than rag on you! I appreciate your transparency; it helps us avoid making mistakes, as well as how to problem solve when issues arise. Love your channel!
Thanks for the great video. Keep living your best life and ignore the negative people. Some people only see the cup as half empty. Thanks for being 100% transparent about your travel experiences. Keep up the good work and have a great weekend.
Thanks, Justin! I am looking forward to your Alaskan cruise on Ovation of the Seas. I pray that the Wi-Fi is better in that ship, and I hope we get to see you with Chris Wong.
Thanks for the information regarding the renew of your passport process. I definitely needed to hear that so I know what to expect when I renew mines and can plan accordingly. Thanks Jay!
My wife had an issue with her passport...the plane ran out of overhead bins and they gate-checked her bag. She forgot that her passport was in her carry-on. On arrival, the bag was nowhere to be found. She was already filling out an affidavit of loss with immigration when they found the bag, luckily.
Hi Justin. The change in your plans maybe a good thing. You want your Mom to have the best experience possible. Get prepared for that. You and your Mom enjoy Alaska .🚢⚓️
I'm waiting on your Alaskan cruise video 💃🏽 It's on my "bucket list" to do although I'm not a big lover of cruising 🤪 I hope to do Hawaii also one day.
Well said young man and we watched your Bahama Paradise video and we enjoyed it. My wife and I are about to go on our 10th cruise since 2015 and I love watching cruise videos prior to goin on and also after just to reminisce. I watch you tube to be informed as well as entertained. I subscribe to La Lido Loca, Tony is very informative and I just subscribed to your channel. Look forward to watching future videos.
Hey Jay. Loved the video as usual. Don't worry about the haters. That is what they do. They look for anything to hate on you about. Haters will be haters. DO YOU.
I am a new subscriber to your channel and I can tell already that you are authentic and that you love what you do. Thank you for sharing your cruise experiences. I too love cruising and I look forward to viewing more of your adventures. Stay strong and as they say, keep keeping on!
I understand what you went through because I just got back off a cruise today and my bags got lost and we got the wrong room. You are doing a great job on your channel. I wish you lots of success in your future ventures.👍👍
I think it's helpful that you detail the adversities and not just the fluff (although I do enjoy the fluff). 😉Other folks may benefit by your experience with the birth certificate that did not have the raised seal or finding out that you must surrender your passport when renewing. Keep reporting the good and the not-so-good experiences.
Hey first comment on your channel and I must say your detail into your videos are excellent for the usual traveler or cruiser. Trying to plan my second ever cruise with my partner and your videos help.
Good job in letting people know about sending in our current passport with renewal, folks need to know that!! Also important, is that if your passport is due to expire within the next 6 months, you must renew before your trip! Keep in mind, it can take months to receive your new passport due to a huge backlog in renewals. Thanks for all your info... I really enjoy your vlogs, you are sweet, informative and sometimes really funny! ( I like the funny part!)
You can plan all you want and still something can go wrong. Friends of ours were due to go on a Princess cruise today and as of two days ago he tested positive for Covid and didn’t even feel bad. Did three tests all positive. Of course now they can’t go, but will use the money on a future cruise. My hubby had to expedite his passport before our last cruise in March. His fault for not sending it in sooner to be renewed. With Covid they are taking longer. Know people who their passports took up to 6 months to come back. We did get it in time barely for our cruise but we may have been just like you. Hubby thought the BC that he had was fine to use. But now he knows it wasn’t a raised stamp, like yours wasn’t. Thanks for teaching a lot of novice cruisers some new info they might not have known! 🙂💕
I appreciate your videos and wish you were at the terminal 18 at Port Everglades 4/8! I was denied boarding for losing my passport curbside when dropping off our luggage. I believe one of the porters took it intentional or no intentional; but when I turned around my luggage was rolled away with my passport pouch on top. I am an experienced cruiser and this has never happened before! RCL denied boarding and would not accept a copy of my passport, or even though I had scanned my passport into the Royal app that gives the passport book number and details. Now I am battling my travel insurance and have to prove theft. There were no cameras. Passport pouch showed up in the parking lot the next morning but too little too late. We were denied, missed our opportunity to experience the Wonder, and cost me $4k because last minute I had upgraded to a junior suite for our birthdays. Ouch! We are devastated but rebooked because we love cruising but we do not like the way the terminal is run, the porters rush to your car and rush you out. You are lucky you had friends. We looked for two hours and waved goodbye to the Wonder. Our dream vacation trashed.
Appreciate your information and coverage of all things cruising. As I mentioned in another post, I had to delay a cruise because of the long delay in getting my new passport. What a pain!
I really hate when people tell me how I should enjoy my time on a cruise. I want internet access. I want *good* internet access. Whether it's for my work or personal (and for me it's usually both) is irrelevant. I don't tell anyone else how to have fun and expect the same courtesy. I decided right as I pulled up to the airport when leaving for this last cruise that I wasn't going to check my luggage. I've only had my luggage lost a few times but since I was leaving on a cruise the following morning, it happening for this trip would have had worse consequences. My bag fit in the overhead so that wasn't a problem. I'm going to do that from now on. There's a laundry on the ship (I can either wash my own clothes or pay a whole lot to have the crew do it) so I can pack pretty light.
I sailed on many cruises throughout the 80s and 90s with my birth certificate which had no raised seal. It looks like a negative…black background with white lettering and I never experienced a problem. I don’t know if you were born in Chicago but that’s where I am from. I just recently obtained a new birth certificate with the raised seal. Thanks for sharing this information about the passport, I had no clue that they take your old one when you get a new one.
Justin, I had the same problem , I had a hospital issued birth certificate ,I used it to get on to 2 cruises in 2004 and 2005 but when I used it to get my passport in 2007 ,they denied it and I had to contact Illinois to get a state issued birth certificate . I'm surprised you were able to get your passport with the birth certificate you had. God-bless you.
Seriously? A threat to international security or that you're special? Omg!!! Ok so yes, you ARE a very special man to your family, son, and Laurene. You did things you thought you could do to get on the cruise. You already stated what was going on with your passport and birth certificate. Please keep doing the videos Justin. I enjoy them so much.
30 yrs ago when I was in High School my adoptive parents wanted to send me on a trip outside the country with fellow band members. (high school band). However I was adopted and the US govt. would not issue me a US passport because of this. ( at least back then. ) A lawyer was hired and he advised that I could fight and eventually get US citizenship. but it would not happen in time for the trip. Atty advised relinquish any claim to US citizenship and obtain a passport from my original country. What a hassel. I barely made the trip. Years later I had to become a US citizen cause I had relinquished my claim even though I had lived here since I was 18 mnths old. so jump those hoops. good luck to you at Ship Life. just sharing my passport crazy story. :-)
I'm glad you shared this story because too many people think they do not need a passport. There are too many variations in birth certificates (state, county, year of issue, etc) and that can cause cruise line people to have trouble identifying them. A passport is the way to go. I hope yours comes fast. Different cruise lines have different requirements with birth certificates too. What might be acceptable on carnival might not work for Royal or NCL.
I am having an issue right now I am sopose to be on the carnival pride out of Tampa tomorrow and 2 weeks ago carnival emailed me that I needed to get a code for traveling to Brumuda so I filled it out and have not received it back yet. In the email from carnival it said we would be denied boarding without and we will not get a refund. I booked this cruise over a year ago. Hopefully it will work out for my friend and I but if they don’t let me on I hope they at least give me a refund or future cruise credit because I have done everything I have been asked to do.
It is good for travellers to see things just happen. There is no perfect travel, that would be boring. I had never had baggage issues until my most recent cruise. Someone took my bag from the terminal and left it at the curb. It took an additional 45 minutes of my day but I didn't allow it to ruin the great vacation I just had. Things just happen.
Jay , Judy & I Love all the Ships We have been on , But wait till You do a Holland American ...They are not a Carnival or Celebrity , very different and also Great...
I was in you situation once with passport renewal. It literally arrived a week before my cruise. I was frazzled to say the least. But I learned and never again will I cut it that close. Now that being said the paperwork I filled out did state that my current pp would have to be sent with my pw. I was told by person at post office I would get it back before my cruise if I paid expedited fees. Was $$$$$$ and worth it otherwise I might not have gotten it in time. Again never again will I cut it that close. Also I did have my birth certificate ready just in case. Even now with my pp I carry the small official birth certificate with me. Just keep it in the pp book.
Jay sorry for all the negative folk who has to comment. You are learning like we all do and this will make your input to others going through the same thing in the future. Love your honesty. Keep your head up.
I don’t look at it as negative but instead more of a misunderstanding. I only talk about these subjects and issues because I believe that transparency is important.

I like your transparency. Keep up the good work J.
Transparency is key🔑 Thanks for watching!
Jay you are a great guy and so knowledgeable with the cruise world thanks so much for all the great advice!
Jay, I really appreciate your being so transparent about your life. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
I wouldn't worry about those people and their nasty comments. We all who listen to your channel know that you are an honest man and have a good heart.
You are going to love Alaska on Ovation last September….. been on over 30 cruises…… Alaska was my favorite for scenery ….. so beautiful!
Hello J .dont be disappointed keep the faith be strong
We are all sitting at home watching your show, oversharing is not a problem!
Thank you! I appreciate you!
Bro,,,aside from the fun and excitement you have because of your channel MANY OF US KNOW YOU WORK VERY HARD,,,we appreciate you and thanks alot for everything.
I have never cruised so I really love your show. It gives me the look inside, Thanks
Things happen. People are ridiculous. Jay is sharing travel experiences that may help others that run into these travel incidents. Thank you for being transparent.
Great video voice! Really enjoy your channel! Hello from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦
Your channel is so informative. Thanks for all your hard work!
Thank you so much for watching! I’m just trying to be real and transparent that’s all.
Cool, your are going to cruise with your mom! Can't wait to watch those videos ❤😊👍
Don't give haters the time of day..they have nothing better to do than rag on you! I appreciate your transparency; it helps us avoid making mistakes, as well as how to problem solve when issues arise. Love your channel!
Great to share the rough travel experiences -- it happens to all of us. Great video
Thank you! Cruising on the Norwegian Dawn in June. I just went and checked to make sure my passport is not going to expire soon.
Love your channel Jay! Keep it up xox Virginia ( Grandma)
people can be terrible...your doing great! We love the information and experienced you share with us! Thank you!
Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having. My channel is small, yours is NOT. I applaud your success and aspire for it as well.
You’re doing a great job Jay, you do not have to justify yourself to these people. Life is not perfect and I agree with you things will happen.
Hey Jay, thank you for all you do. I've learned so much about cruising and travel through you. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the information. This is good to know. I appreciate your videos.
I loved the video. Thank you for sharing!
Don’t listen to the haters… I’ve dealt with passport/birth certificate issues with me and my 13 year old son. You are a great cruise ambassador!
I understand what you went through because I just got back off a cruise today and my bags got lost and we got the wrong room. You are doing a great job on your channel. I wish you lots of success in your future ventures.👍👍
Totally agree with your decision. And appreciate your information sharing.
I've found that some people serving you are happier to say a hard "NO" rather than "Let's see what we can do to help you"
Hey first comment on your channel and I must say your detail into your videos are excellent for the usual traveler or cruiser.
You're doing a fine job Jay. You are a gem and truly appreciated! o/ From VA
Thanks for the update.
My pleasure! Thank you for tuning in!
You said the magic keyword "Networking". Like you said, EVERYONE has had some type of travel scenario therefore no one should judge.
I enjoy your updates. Keep up the great work.
I’m sorry you cancelled a couple of cruises. Hopefully you get your new passport soon. 🤞
I appreciate your transparency and telling things the way they really are. Hope you have a great Alaska cruise with your Mom .👍🙂
Thank you for all your videos
Thank you for all of your support! I really appreciate you
I'm glad you shared this story because too many people think they do not need a passport.
Always a good idea to make photo copies of passports, drivers licenses and credit cards.
You are awesome! So many good lessons here!
4 months ago I got off the freedom of the seas I had to present my original birth certificate to customs and they accepted it,. No problems
You rock, Jay!
Jay , Judy & I Love all the Ships We have been on ,
But wait till You do a Holland American ...They are
not a Carnival or Celebrity , very different and also
Great...
Really? I’ve been saying that I need to check them out.
And You will love the B.B.KING Lounge..
Great Explanation that you really did not need to Satisfy the Groaners 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
