    Today’s victim, the Yamaha, XSR700 is one of those great little bikes, in fact many in the motorcycle journalism realm have said that the XSR and its sibling the Yamaha MT-09 may be the best values in today’s market, bringing the rider great engineering, performance and a ton of fun.
    Once again, our test bike was provided by MOM’s in Foxboro, MA. If you talk to the good folks down there, please tell them that Craig Ripley sent you.

    First bike I ever owned was a Can-Am TNT 250, all the way back to the late 70's. Kept riding until 1984 then stopped.
    Wanted to get back into trail riding and two years ago bought a new demo 700 Tenere, big mistake as it is a lot of things but it ain't no dirt bike. No harm done however, sold it quickly and found a 2009 fuel injected KLX 250.
    Two years later and I just bought a 2022 XSR 700 xTribute. What a great bike!
    I think I somehow fit your profile rider here even though I am not a beginner.
    Love the torque-ee power and so quick and as you point out, nimble.
    I've only had it a week and am already wondering how much better it might be with the fork upgrade.
    I didn't like the mirrors either, right from the get go.
    It easily has enough power for short two up touring as well.
    Stay tuned!
    Peace.

    Sold my '08 Harley Super Glide Custom last year. I've been looking at getting another motorcycle and this one is at the top of the list. I liked my Harley but you hit the nail on the head. It was a large behemoth of a motorcycle that was heavy, slow, braked horribly, handled even worse in the twisty bits, and wasn't that fun to ride. I'm purposefully going smaller because I want to enjoy my rides. I never went on any long trips so there was never any need for something I could tour with.

      The XSR700 or the MT07 would be good choices. Very fun bikes. Madstad makes a bracket and shield for the MT07, so you could turn it into a mini touring bike. I think that would be a fun project. Have fun!

    Looks like Kathy could have an 2017 FZ 07 in her future.... Your comment about those of us who are seniors "if we would be honest with ourselves..." would like this style bike over our cruisers.... I rode 225 miles on my gear packed Super Tenere last week without taking a break. Two days later got on the Goldwing and thought.. "oh yeah, baby!" In fairness, on the Sup Ten it was 95 degrees with a dewpoint near 80 and stopping would have been less comfortable than just riding and the Goldwing day was perfect. But, motorcycles bring out parental-like affection....... you love them all despite their differences....

      The bike is probably a bit tall for her. I hope everyone gets that I was being tongue in check, and including myself within my comment. It is not so much the style of bike, but more the size and weight I was referring two. Pretty much all of my riding buddies are thinking about downsizing. Our wives may not like that though...

    Being an old geezer myself, I totally enjoyed Craig's review. I slightly disagreed with a few of his comments a little bit, but not much. But I completely enjoyed his honesty and style. I presently ride a BMW GS1200 and a BMW GS700. I bought the GS700 because I thought needed to downsize. It is a good bike but when I ride it, I miss the power and riding style of the GS1200. My next try at downsizing may just be one of the Yamaha 700''s.

      Thanks Gary. I too enjoy the power of my 1200 Tenere, in particular on the highway or carrying all my gear. But for commuting, riding backroads and especially offroad, I think I can get away with a smaller bike. I too would like to give the T700 a try. For me, especially as I get older, I think it is important to focus on improving and maintaining my skill level rather than having a fast bike...ride that proverbial slow bike fast. Of course we need to get the OEMs to make a small bike as comfortable as a big one, and offer the same level of tech. It looks like BMW has done that with the GS800 this year.

    This is the perfect bike for putting around town. It's got power when you need it, but it's upright and comfortable at low speeds

    Nice review! I own an XSR700 and i can confirm, that it is a fun bike. Did even 2 long trips (3400 & 2400km) without problems.
    At the moment I am looking for something more suited for longer trips. Being very happy with my XSR I am looking at the S10 or Tracer 900 GT.
    Greetings from Luxembourg EU.

      Thank you! The Tracer GT looks like a nice bike. My dealer is hoping to get a demo unit in the near future. Of course the Tenere is great too!

      How does it perform off road? Nothing too serious, but a bit of back road and easy trails?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому +1

      I am sure you COULD do it, but SHOULD you...probably not.That is not what the bike is made for. Thanks!

      Serge KIEFFER, I was just talking to the folks at Mom's about testing riding the GT, so hopefully there will be a video coming in the near future.

    I agree with the lighter bike approach. If it wasn’t for the fact that I ride mostly two-up, I would trade my LT for something smaller and lighter for traveling. Probably not clear down to a 600, but an R1200RT would be a lot lighter. I just bought a KLR650 to have a lighter bike for running around locally on the dirt roads and some easy off-road stuff. It has been great fun so far!

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому

      I am the same. The Vision is for two up travel, otherwise I would downsize. Thanks!

    Totally agree about downsizing. I've gone to a Kawasaki Versys 650 Se and it's a perfect touring bike.

    Nice job. I think some steel braided brake lines will fix that. Other than cost all bikes should come with them.

    Nothing retro about this bike its just a damn good naked bike with awesome power, Just needs a tail tidy, slammer seat (from Yamaha) and a decent exhaust system for 'that' noise and you've got yourself one hell of a bike!

    I'm a big Yamaha fan, great review Craig. My next one is going to be a Yamaha just not too sure what or when. I have 60 000 km on my Honda XRL650, another 60 000 to go and it's on to the "Tenere" Maybe?? I enjoyed your presentation thank you.

    nice review . compare xsr700 vs. cb650r ? in terms of built quality/reliability and comfort.which one would you choose, thx.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      I dont think you can go wrong with either one. The Honda is probably a bit more "refined" but I like the more upright position of the xrs700.

    A modern version of the old XS650, which back in the day, was a beeg bike. Nice for a starter, and I agree with us silverbacks moving down to mid size, but when you gotta get out and slab it for a stint, well, wind protection, bags, etc. Never went to Mom's, was always a Bettencourt's guy...

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому

      The bigger bikes do offer two up comfort and wind protection as you mention. I would be interested to outfit the xsr700 for touring to see how it does. Yamaha does have the Tracer 900 GT, which I would like to try. I have been meaning to head over to Bettencourts to check out the new Wing. Thanks!

    Great review Craig... I do want a smaller 2nd bike but I can't see myself shrinking it down this much. With my weight and aggressive riding style, I'd kill a bike that small in no time.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому

      Thanks! I hear you...comfort is very important and one of the reasons I bought the Tenere. Bikes are tools, you get the best one for the job.

    Would you trade your Victory for one

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому +1

      I know someone would ask me that...LOL. The truth is that I still have the Vision because it is comfortable riding two up. That is what the big bikes are great for. However, if it was just me I would trade it for something lighter. In fact I almost never ride it alone any more. The Tenere is just more fun. I am very interested in the T700 that is due out in 2019...fingers crossed.

    I never really understood why old guys that ride touring bikes with big twins laugh at people who ride sportsters.
