Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar Review (late-2016)

  • Apple's new MacBook Pro is a contentious machine, dropping almost all legacy ports in favor of Thunderbolt 3, ignoring the Windows 10 style of touchscreen in favor of supplementary Touch Bar, and adopting the low-profile "butterfly" keyboard that proved to be love-it-or-hate-it on the 12-inch MacBook. Has Apple forgotten that the "pro" in MacBook Pro stands for "professional"?

    macbooks are built to last. if i buy these developing features now, in a few short years the whole market will switch and i wont have to buy a new laptop to get these ports/features
    i have many friends still using their 2008 and 2010 macbook pros because of their superior build quality and longevity. i think apple made a smart move here

    • @delasol

      The problem was never build quality. The problem is the "pro" aspect of these machines are non existent. Removing legacy ports from a laptop that the current industry still utilizes in their everyday hardware isn't a good move. Also the prices for these machines are outlandish for what they offer in terms of specs. While PC users are granted the benefit of having their machines equal the value>price. Mac users have no choice. You want the best you're going to have to pay upwards to car prices for these machines. usb-c is the future for sure but everything in my place is still using usb-a ports. By the time the whole industry converts everything to usb-c a new mac pro line will be coming out, which won't make this laptop a waste of money but sure will be outdated in terms of specs. I honestly don't want to go back to PC. i love my MAC, but i cannot justify spending 3k+ for a laptop that i will have to spend another $200+ on dongles so i can connect my monitors. My SD reader, my chargers, My external hard drives.
      By all means if you have the money go ahead and by it. Which most people with a disposable income will do. I honestly would too. I'm a fan boy who's also an idiot so in time ill purchase one of these things. But everyone who's buried this machine in their blogs and videos online are right to do so. Apple are turning into a luxury brand and are alienating a key demographic of people; their "pro" users.
      They should have just called this the new macbook and people wouldn't have had such an issue with it.

      +delasol But these are far from MacBooks, they are definitely MacBook Pros. Putting them under the MacBook moniker would just make their product line a mess. Bad for consumers because of confusion, bad for sales, and just not consistent with the 12inch MacBook. Apple has always been at the forefront of forcing certain changes in the tech industry, namely the streamlining of devices by dropping legacy components/software (floppy drive, CD/DVD drive, Adobe Flash, audio jack on phones, etc) The removal of legacy ports is a pain during this transition period, but being as aggressive as they are they will not compromise on forcing the industry to change. Even the inclusion of one legacy port would mean peripheral companies would drag their feet, and probably other computer companies too.

    Thank goodness Apple has not given in and made the MacBook screen a touchscreen. macOS is a desktop OS. The touch bar is enough touch for me on a MacBook. if you want a touch OS go to iOS on an iPad.

    I don't agree with the statement "it's probably worth it" at least not for my use case and I would argue for many professional users. Ignoring the fact that pretty much anything you need to connect to the new MacBooks involves an adapter. A couple of UA-camrs have noticed wifi drops when connecting certain hardware true adapters. Also having your network running true an adapter is something I would like to avoid as much as I can. As an it professional I don't mind the price as much as I do the lack of usability. Talking about price $1500 to $1700 gives you a 6core machine with 32gig of memory and 1tb of PCI storage with a top of the line case power supply and grafic card you can even buy a new monitor and have sum cash for a tasty lunch hahaha

      The fact that you can get more powerful hardware in a cheaper/comparably priced Windows laptop is nothing new, it's been the case this entire millennium. You're paying for how the software and hardware work together, which in most cases keeps up, like how FCX is as good on Mac hardware as on PCs with higher clock speeds. It's a first generation product, it'll be better with time just like all other first gen things are

      But in 2011 I payed 1600 EUR for a MacBook Pro 15 with i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, AMD Radeon 6750M and HighRes Display. The price was already high compared to windows machines, but it was outstanding: i7 with >5 hours batterylife? High Quality Unibody? Midfield Graphics Card in such a "thin" device? The MacBook Pro was never a gaming device but always a midfield/high media device.
      And now? Still the actual i7 (which will be soon outdated), a low end graphics card (radeon pro 450 is still not much faster than the 650M from 2012), killed the best keyboard on marked, gave us a touchbar I would never use (because my hand is 90% of the time on the awesome trackpad). And why this shit? Just that it becomes smaller and slimmer. This is a fucking PRO device. I do not expect gaming performance, buw I also do not need a fucking 3GB/s SSD if it comes with 256 GB. I do not need a fucking 1tflops GPU if there are better ways they could go: e.G. external GPU via TB3.
      The problem of it: They want 2700 EUR for the entry level device. Sorry, but that is just ridiculous. Not because I could not afford it. Just because it is by far overpriced.

    • @B3ansGuy
      @B3ansGuy 7 років тому

      immatoll You're right the prices are way too high, the way I'm justifying it is the resale on my current MBP, should be able to get like 800ish euros on it so I'll essentially be paying base price for an upgraded machine with the 1TB hard drive. It's also nice knowing that in 5ish years when I sell the laptop it'll be worth quite a bit and I'll again be able to subsidize the next one with it

    Good grief that touch bar looks soooo gimmicky. The calculator use is a joke! Plus that keyboard looks dreadful, it must be like typing on a touch screen, but hey at least it's a thinner laptop...

    • @JamesJDMoe
      @JamesJDMoe 7 років тому +1

      you need to look up the definition of the word gimmick. because the touchbar will have many great uses for many ppl, making it not a gimmick but useful feature.

    • @5450daniel
      @5450daniel 7 років тому

      I don't think it's a gimmick. I've always hated using such convoluted key shortcuts to get shit done. This touch bar will make things go so much faster. I love the screenshot button, and if I'm listening to music I can easily scrub through certain tracks while I'm doing something else without having to open iTunes.

    • @matthewbahri
      @matthewbahri 7 років тому +1

      Sanjit dude just listen. You think specs on a paper mean everything! Apples OS works very well and doesn't require tons of specs to operate. Also look, the $1,500 one you're talking about has weaker specs than the model with touchbar, and that's something a lot of people don't seem to understand. For the extra $300, you're not just getting thr touchbar. You're getting 2 more USB C ports, a better graphics card, 2.9 ghz vs 2.0, 2133 MHz ram vs 1866 MHZ in the non touch bar. In the keynote, even Apple themselves said that the model without the touchbar is to replace the MacBook Air.

    • @christopherwarsh
      @christopherwarsh 7 років тому +2

      Munther G-mail without the touch bar? I don't think so. Apple made the 'basic' MPB underpowered in the graphics department to force people to upgrade...

    • @Munzer1977
      @Munzer1977 7 років тому

      C Dubs thanks. yes without touch bar. What if I add to it 16Gb ram and 512Gb hdd and the I7 do you think it won't make it better? I am canceling my order on the touch bar one, can't bare it it's a recipe for disaster if say I spell coffee on it I will end up without escape key permanently. I know the Ram frequency will be less and the GPU is 540 but does it make less pro than the higher ones ?

    Can I have some buying advice from you?
    I'm thinking to buy the 15 inch 2.7 GHz with Radeon Pro 460, I will use it for R&D product, photo/video editing, running all kind of Autodesk apps, VR of course, and gaming. Does it good enough for all those? Do you think apple will add haptic feedback to the touchbar or any new features in next year KabyLake model? I can afford only one so does it able to future proof at least 4 years I don't have to worry about something like VR, or 4K editing my MBP can't catch up?
    For safe bet, do you think I should wait for next year model and possible lower price?
