This is very interesting. When my 63iv started running hot, I was universally advised that these transmissions are not designed to be rebuilt and that the labor associated with doing so wasnt worth it when a new transmission could be bought for around 4 grand. While I'm sure the video excluded many steps, the process of changing out the clutch plates didn't seem to be ridiculous.
Informative vid . Would you say this Gearbox would work well with a Cummins 6bt running 190 hp or if that is too much then 150 hp ? . Planning hull at 2.5 tonnes overall weight
The gear to one direction appears as noticeably wider than the gear to the other diraction. If so, I thought these transmissions were fine for their rated power in both A/B directions... We own a first gen (very old!) ZF Hurth HSW800. I can't find shit / documentation about it, it's all for the newer generation. I think I once read somewhere that they changed some stuff and It seems the more new ones always have the exact same ratio in both directions. Do you know anything about these?
When you air check the disc clutch, ist normal to have the air leal in between the disc. I was told the metal rings where not sealing properly, im a bit confuse. Thanks...
Nice video. Good informations. i like it... I got a ZF63 A with a 2.5:1 Ratio. Actually i wonder if it is possible to change the Ratio on this gearbox to 1.2 or 1.5, cause i know you can buy a ZF63A with that kind of ratios. It should be possible to change the gears inside to correct ratio that i would like to have. Do you agree ? Thanks for your advice
Hey, just got a ZF 63IV (ratio A=1.99 B=2.03) transmission second hand for free to put in my 1999 mastercraft xstar. The boat first had a HSW 630 v1 1.55 (ratio A=1.56 B=1.57) but it makes an horrible noise and wanted to replace it wit hthe much newer one. It seems to be stuck on forward tho. Symptoms are I cannot put it in neutral and when i try to go neutral or reverse, the engine stops. Does that sound like the same symptoms the transmission in this video had ? I'm looking to rebuild the new one I got in a shop but don't wanna waste time and money... Also, as the ratios are different, would it make a problem or any difference ? Thanks!
Nice work.
Love the gearbox dyno. Nice piece of kit.
Test the pressure. Should be around 100 psi at idle.

I disagree on not able to be rebuilt. They are a good trasnmission and I do them all the time.
Smooth operator!

Great stuff, thanks

Yes, it will leak a little bit there.

It’s cheaper to buy another transmission than it is to buy new gear sets from ZF.

Sounds like it needs rebuilt. The forward clutches were slipping at one point and they welded together.
