    As someone who is a huge fan of game shows and has seen many, this is probably by far my favorite final round. It was challenging, fast paced, intense, and the atmosphere fit it perfectly. I love the touch of the music elevating in tension after each pit stop, it builds up to the climax of the round so well. The UK version was great, but it's a shame the US version got lost in the mess of million dollar prime time game shows at the turn of the century. I think it was much better than some of the others.

    • @DanielLearmouth
      @DanielLearmouth 7 років тому +5

      Same, honestly. There are a few gameshows I look back on from when I was a kid that I either saw when they were new or caught on Challenge, and this is one of the few that stuck to me.
      This, the Krypton Factor, the Crystal Maze, WWTBAM......the turn of the millennium was great for gameshows.

    • @ShiningDialga
      @ShiningDialga 7 років тому +5

      Daniel Learmouth I found the show again only because I remembered the final round - the intense music, the moving answers, the bail out button heartbeat... shows how much it stuck with me.
      I think if it had come out a year or two later than it did, it would have survived, since Millionaire had slowed by then. This version was more streamlined than it's UK cousin, so it's an easier watch. However, I don't think Dick Clark was the right host for it. He feels... checked out when I watch the old videos, like he wasn't all there. Not sure if it was because of age or disinterest, but they needed someone more deliberate like Chuck Woolery was with Greed.

    • @DanielLearmouth
      @DanielLearmouth 7 років тому +4

      Yeah, as great a host as Dick Clark was for a lot of things, it's fairly easy to see he was probably not the ideal candidate for it. Like you say, he didn't seem to have that urgency and deliberacy that, say, Philip Schofield had for the UK version.
      All that being said, I think the reason why the US version was easier to watch was largely because it wasn't tied to the National Lottery, which the UK version was. The problem for me, though, having watched this back in the day, is that I watched it as a kid with all the National Lottery bits in it, and with later repeats on channels those bits are taken out, and it feels all of a sudden too fast for me. I dunno, there's a weird disconnect for me.

    • @ShiningDialga
      @ShiningDialga 7 років тому +5

      Daniel Learmouth I can see that. What I caught was that the UK version of the first round took WAY too long. They showed who played, who got it wrong, the top three times, interviewed the top one for each question... for 6 questions in a row. It's obviously filler, and while not unpleasent, it got boring after seeing it every single question in every single episode.
      With the US version, it was answer the question, show the winner, and onto the next. The middle round was still awful, but that's another issue entirely... I swear, had this final round been attached to a more streamlined early game, it would have been a classic.

      What about Twenty One hosted by Maury Povich "That show was also competing against Winning Lines"

    • @JoeyLamontagne
      @JoeyLamontagne 9 років тому +1

      To be honest, that wasn't that interesting nor gave it more than what the 50s version gave. They played more on the controversy that the original version created than added anything new. Greed added a "prisoner dilemma" aspect, with the captain have to choose between being greedy and earn more or keep the team as the same to eventually succeed in winning the jackpot. Winning Lines added the "Winner's Circle" aspect from Pyramid in which you have to compete with a timer to answer the required amount of questions before the your time is up.

    • @ShiningDialga
      @ShiningDialga 7 років тому +3

      snowden67 Agreed. The first round was way too long, though it was slightly better in the US. The second round always killed me with how unfair it was. It was completely based on luck, and people who's numbers got drawn early were up shit creek. So many people answered before it was finished or just guessed to have a chance at being eliminated.
      I feel like a quick-fire version of the first round would be a good replacement. Have each of the 6 answer several questions in a row, make the winner the one who answers the most, and among them the fastest. It's fast, it's fair, and it fits with the show.
