The main reason they won't let you film / take pictures are the prices. There are sadly well known "flippers" in the arcade scene. They buy the stuff cheap at local shops like MAK or buy the PCBs at Yahoo and sell them with a mark up from 100 % - 500 %. It's got so bad that certain "flippers" aren't allowed to go in stores like MAK, Beep or G-Front anymore. Because bullshit like that the remaining stores are real secretive about prices. Also it's got real hard to find specific PCBs for a good price because of this.
I spent a good bit of time in Japan and they definitely pissed off the store owners and were directly responsible for stores raising prices, putting up signs regarding pictures/videos, etc.... usually the same three individuals known among the community.
Haha, well I don't suppose very many people would want to buy a DVD of these videos, but you're very welcome to download them for your own personal use if you like it.
on the sign the name koba yashi sounds like something i heard before but cant remember where. at 3:34 i see clock tower but im not exactly sure what it is since the box looks really different
Hi there Jim, should have gone to Kobay Ashi on level 7 ,and you might have seen where Star trek got the idea for the kobay ashi Mario manoeuvre when kirk cheated the system lol Sweet wee video man. 😀👍👍👍
@@MadPanicGaming I didn't call, just knocked on the door and the owner happened to be there. Friendly guy with an amazing collection of arcade hardware. Ended up leaving with an arcade board.
@@retrogames_jp1404 Not sure what you mean but I think if you have all the needed hookups you could get it working in an Astro City sized cabinet. I saw this kind of setup at Mikado in Takadanobaba. It might not look as nice as the original custom cab with the lit up sides but it's probably easier to maintain.
Camera glasses really aren't that great, even these days. They take very poor quality videos and are fairly bulky. You also can't record very long. I've looked into getting some for my trip to Japan because I don't want people to tell me no filming. If I want to film for my private use, that's my business.
@@AstorReinhardt I agree. If you don't want someone filming in a business most of the public can access, I would take that as you are doing something wrong.
Björn Härgestam thanks! Hah. Seeing the Real Bout Special was what made me ask the question. Didn’t think to put two and two together. Bit of a brain fart on my part.
So the game stores you go to, including places like hard off...do you ask ahead of time if you can film or do you just film? I mean obviously for this one you just started filming. But the places you don't ask, are you hiding your camera or what? And the places you do ask...what do you say? Do you say your a UA-camr or do you just ask to film?
Guess this is why I’ve never seen footage from MAK Japan before! I hope to be the owner of a consolised arcade one day. I know a guy who can help me build a super gun and I’ve bought most parts, but I’m saving money for a Japan trip. If I end up at MAK Japan I wouldn’t dare to buy arcade boards. They are pretty unreliable and it would be too scary to get them home by plane. Perhaps a NEO GEO MVS cart if the price is right though.

My favorite are the Italian flippers
Yeah exactly :P. I find it really sad that a few guys drove the prices way up for arcade stuff. It's harmful for the complete hobby :/.

That really sucks,Jimbo is a good boy lol.
a really nice shop with very nice sales clerks! Bought my EspGaluda there last christmas.
The guys on the arcade otaku forum mentioned mak. Loved the tour! This is my idea of heaven as a collector of Japanese pcb's :D
Great way to enjoy my Saturday night watching Jim in action You show make DVD of these bro. You know I'll buy them. 8^)
Anthony..

Interesting setup they had there, a bit like a old school computer store
I finally stopped in to see one of your videos! And I subscribed! Ms. Ginny for the win! Miss ya James! (Ginny Henderson, 3rd Don)
Hello Ms. Ginny! I haven't heard from you in a very long time. Next time I'm home I'll definitely stop by the dojang, if you're in we can catch up.
Love these videos!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them.
When you got to Japan, which shop did you buy your CRT tv etc.. How did you go about this?
Who can I.D. the opening music? It's great! Would love to know which game it's from. Cheers!
Let's all pretend we didn't see this... ☺ ♥ 🇯🇵

There's a guy named Kobayashi who was a speed eating champ, and the Kobayashi Maru is a thing from Star Trek I believe.

You dirty arcade creeper! thanks!
I do indeed creep through these arcade laden streets.
Haha, fun to see you here :P
MAK won't budge on their prices either. I visited G-Front's "shop" and he was far more eager to bargain.
if you get to enter the "shop" ^^
I'm not familiar with that "shop". What is it?
KidShoryuken an arcade shop like MAK
Not open to regular customers though.
You need to call them upfront in order to get in if I remember correctly.

The Obsolete Geek when I did the same nothing happened xD
Can you recall if they had a Night Striker (Taito System Z) PCB? There's one on eBay for $2000 but was hoping to pay less.
isn't it useless without the proper panel?

Brock2097 afaik it has a special control panel in form of a wheel or something?
Not playable with a regular control panel?
Retrogames_JP Yeah, it’s a joystick-based game so might need additional custom parts now that you mention it
I don't recall if they had one, I didn't see one at least.
Why did you keep filming if you saw the “no camera” signs?
The music at 1:30 sounds familiar to me. Where is it from?
Hellfire S for the PC Engine. Stage 1 theme
Ah, yes. I've played through it, though only once. Great game.
you really need a camera stabilizer, and move it more gently.
Use video glasses or a camera that connects to your glasses.
If I had the money to acquire some camera specs, and they weren't totally obvious, I'd totally go for some.

Does this place sell MVS carts? Planning to go to Japan next month
From what I’ve heard they have MVS. The Real Bout Special demo in the video probably confirmed it too.
Björn Härgestam thanks! Hah. Seeing the Real Bout Special was what made me ask the question. Didn’t think to put two and two together. Bit of a brain fart on my part.
I'm sure they do. I don't recall seeing any when I was there but I didn't really have a very thorough look around.
@@MadPanicGaming thanks! Can't wait to see for myself! Your Akihabara game shop vids have been very helpful for me!
Do they speak English in this store? I was just investigating internet for pats for a custom built arcade joystick today :-)
Minimal English, it'd be your best bet to be assisted by someone who speaks Japanese if you intend to deal with them.

bought several pcbs there and brought them home to Germany - they usually wrap them very good!
Good to know, maybe I’ll dare...
If I had the money and the space available I'd definitely have at least one arcade cabinet in my home.
KidShoryuken fulfilled that dream last year and hopefully getting a 2nd one this weekend!
Hey bro please do toy shops as well! cheers
I can certainly do that.
I might go, idk, but I can't go to Japan until at least 2028
Broaden yo mind son'. But arcade shizz kills real estate for sure. If u collect it.
If I had the money and space available, for sure I'd have some arcade cabs.
Did santa give you coal because you filmed in a non filming area? Kappa
He gave me a fifth of Jack.

Should really try and be discreet when filming m8.....
I was, but when the shop is so small it becomes less feasible to be inconspicuous.
