MMM is one helluva singer. Went to a concert he did at the Austin Municiple Auditorium around 1973. They had a power problem....and he just sat on the edge of the stage and played and sang without ampliphication for nearly an hour. Thanks for the good times Michael.
I use to live in Austin Texas back in the early 70's. Anyways, a friend of mine said I ought to check out this player, Michael Murphy at the Armadillo Headquarters. So I went and saw him as was totally blown away. Now, this is before he started calling himself Michael Martin Murphy, he was just a rock/folk guy then. As he played that night he did just an acoustic set for a while that was almost an hour and a half long. I can without hesitation, that Mr. Murphy was without a doubt, the best single player I've ever seen. Better than James Taylor that night. I was, and everyone there, totally taken in. What you see on the video above is just a small example. Imagine an hour and a half of this music. Beautiful!
Saw him at the Austin Municiple Auditorium at Town Lake in 1973. Power Outage and he had to sit on the edge of the stage with a candle and play to 3000 with an acoustic guitar and no amplifier. You'd could've heard a pin drop. Had a magnificent voice. Years later, I'm not sure it wasn't staged.....either way it sure worked.
I saw him do this song last night. His voice is still clear as a bell and his playing is exquisite. MMM is the real deal and always will be. Thanks for posting this!
Murphey wrote great stuff and was on national T.V. programs right out of Adamson High School where he graduated from in 63. He was on "The Group and Harrington program on WFFA T.V. in Dallas while still in high School. This song was written by Louis Charles (B.W.)Stevenson who graduated from the same school in 1967.
those were heady days were they not? KAFM in DFW. . Steve Fromholz . Willie, Rusty, Willis Alan, even Buffet. . Jerry Jeff. . .longnecks. . wow. . my youth
beautiful writing...fantastic version...I was privileged to know and work with Boomer Castleman in the mid -eighties. and early Nineties on various projects. ..MMM just knocks this out of the park...El Bravo...
What an incredible experience to hear him sing again. I saw him in concert with the band in Houston a number of years ago. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Thank you for posting these!
I saw/heard him sing this tune on Public TV's Austin City Limits from 1977 for the first time. I hope y'all kin check it too, if it's still around in their performances vault??
I saw Michael at SMU in the early 70's . The Texas Trilogy.Fromholtz, Willis Allen and Michael. They played for most of the night!! I really liked Michael during this time. Lately he doesn't do much for me.
I went to a MMM concert in Monroe, Louisiana sometime in the late 70's/early 80s. there weren't that many people there. so, MMM ask everyone to come down closer to the stage. we had "front row seats". great concert ! I've always liked "Texas Morning". does anyone know if MMM co-wrote this song with anyone else ? I first heard the song sang by Micheal Nesmith.
@MajorHoolihan I thank you for your service, and a good ear for music. That must have been good times mixed with bad times. I hope all is well. (And, may I ask what branch?) I'm betting on Navy or Marines. Dad was in the Army , so take no offense if my guess is wrong. I do love this song and got to eat with him and B. W. Stevenson a long time ago in a small restaurant in Dallas.
Do you have the full Austin City Limits episode from 1987? The episode featured Michael Martin Murphey and Marty Stuart. It has the Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting Council logo, the opening credits, and a message sponsor from Budweiser, as well as the closing credits with a long version of "London Homesick Blues". After that, Lickona reads the funding credits, and then, the 1984 PBS "Split Profile" logo.
Dave, to further your comment,,back in the days there were many collaborative efforts...no tellin who you'd see on stage together, it wasn't uncommon to be at the Armadillo and see Nikki Larson, John David Souther,BW, Samp Walker, or any other of the Austin crew...that's what's cool about Austin, the musical collaboration...The Armadillo may be gone , but it's been replaced as Threadgills, and no tellin who you'll see behind the sun glasses at the Saxon Pub... Peace folks...
The whole Austin Cosmic Cowboy group from the day all did this song. BW, Rusty Weir, probably Fomholtz, and every bar band in the Hill country covered this at one time or another.
I wish Murph would sing these at his concerts now. He did sing Boy from the Country last week in Kerrville, which was wonderful! Nothing better than just him...and his guitar or banjo! His band is good too, but just him....sigh...so good. His new young musician Shawn just blew us all away with his amazing talents. Gary Roller his bassist for over 30 years also performed at this concert, another amazing musical talent, plus he is an award winning artist.
There seems to be some confusion as to who wrote this song....and we need to get to the bottom of that and give credit where credit is due. But.......This version by MMM......is absolutely incredible. Buckwheats version takes me right out there on I-10 somewhere between Sonora and El Paso....with nothing but jackrabbits and tumbleweeds.......
I think Owen "Boomer" Castleman & Michael Martin Murphey wrote 'Texas Morning' but B. W. Stevenson did record and release it on his self-titled debut album in 1971. Michael Martin Murphey also wrote 'Say What I Feel' on that album.
Not sure that's true. Yes, BW did it great on his first album. But..... I believe this song was actually written by one Michael Nesmith.......one of the Monkeys. All three of them knew each other and came up together in north texas.
Dr. Dave is this off of a VHS Tape.If you can get the right to make me a copy of it so that I can buy the copy I'll mail you the mail if it is not too expensive.I am a fan of Michael.I can not find this type of live performance on VHS Tape.
To all of you lucky enough to live in Austin as I did in the 70's, we were one lucky group folks. THOSE WERE THE DAYS !
Amen to that brother.
73-82 The right place @ the right time....
Anyone remember the Alliance Wagon Yard?
Austin in in 70's was a magical experience. The times have changed but the memories of that wonderful period will last forever...
Absolutely!!!!

I'm lucky I'm alive to hear it all over again. Thanks Michael Martin Murphey !!

I was there right with you !!!The Armadillo BEER GARDEN!!!
artmanjohn2 Those were great days weren't they. Alleys of Austin.
I was there also 1

His best era. I’m biased though, lived in Austin in the 70’s when KOKE-FM ruled. A very cool time.
Was there from 72 to 88. Drove shuttle buses around the UT campus for seven awesome years and wouldn’t trade it for a billion dollars.
I spent a lot of time on "The drag" back in the day.

His voice at this age is exceptional, and even now just a joy to listen to. I'd love to see a concert.
I've been looking for this song for years. I used to hear the B.W. Stevensen version This version is really well done. The lyrics are so interesting.
Those cosmic cowboy days !!!! It was the best time in the best place...central Texas ! New York City is home now but how I miss the Hill Country !
New York City !!!!!
those were heady days were they not? KAFM in DFW. . Steve Fromholz . Willie, Rusty, Willis Alan, even Buffet. . Jerry Jeff. . .longnecks. . wow. . my youth
I was there.
Thank you for all these old videos of Michael, I really enjoy them.
beautiful writing...fantastic version...I was privileged to know and work with Boomer Castleman in the mid -eighties. and early Nineties on various projects. ..MMM just knocks this out of the park...El Bravo...
Michael Nesmith, who was a good friend, did this song. Check it out.
Great song. Great job by MMM.
Love this song..he sounds great here. Love his music, forever..
What an incredible experience to hear him sing again. I saw him in concert with the band in Houston a number of years ago. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Thank you for posting these!
From Austin City Limits Season 12, Episode 6: Michael Martin Murphey/Marty Stuart (1987).
I remember Michael and B.W. both singing this at SMU in 1970's... what a trip!
Great voice!
@catndryer "Texas Morning" was written by Michael Murphey & Boomer Castleman.
Stan is right. B.W. Stevensen recorded "Texas Morning" at some point, but it was written by Murphey and Boomer Castleman.
I love Michael
Wow.
This was not only recorded by MMM and BWS, but Michael Nesmith also recorded it.
loved the whole cosmic cowboy thing at the time. even now.
I saw/heard him sing this tune on Public TV's Austin City Limits from 1977 for the first time. I hope y'all kin check it too, if it's still around in their performances vault??
Did anyone know that Michael is from Oak Cliff TX (South Dallas) and toured with the Beatles as a sound man on their first American Tour in 63?
He was friends growing up with Michael Nesmith of the Monkeys.....who also recorded this song.
James DeWhitt I think in 63 he was only about 14 years old. BW Stevenson went to school with me. We are all about the same age.
He was just graduating High School in '63, doubtful he toured with the Beatles. He had his own music stuff going in '63 and in college in LA then.
I saw Michael at SMU in the early 70's . The Texas Trilogy.Fromholtz, Willis Allen and Michael. They played for most of the night!! I really liked Michael during this time. Lately he doesn't do much for me.

5 O'clock in a Texas Morning was written by Michael Martin Murphey.
It's no wonder Nesmith covered this!!!!
@MajorHoolihan

Michael Nesmith did it first... I heard it around 5:00 in a Texas morning
I love all versions.
Check them out... it's good fer ya!.
Wrong. MMM wrote this song
The whole Austin Cosmic Cowboy group from the day all did this song. BW, Rusty Weir, probably Fomholtz, and every bar band in the Hill country covered this at one time or another.

A voice like silk.......
I'm surprised no one has commented that this song was written by the great B.W. Stevenson...
I think Owen "Boomer" Castleman & Michael Martin Murphey wrote 'Texas Morning' but B. W. Stevenson did record and release it on his self-titled debut album in 1971. Michael Martin Murphey also wrote 'Say What I Feel' on that album.
Richard Tuthill I think Micheal wrote it but BW had a hit with it.
yep, and BW's rendition was perfect
Not sure that's true. Yes, BW did it great on his first album. But..... I believe this song was actually written by one Michael Nesmith.......one of the Monkeys. All three of them knew each other and came up together in north texas.
The best of the progressive country movement! Thanks so much Michael!

Is this version of the song, slow like this, on any of MMM's recordings?
Where can I purchase a copy of this VHS at? because I would like to own a copy of it
Where did this come from? Looks like the original from Austin City Limits.
He really reminds me of acoustic Kenny Loggins here...wonder if/how much he influenced Loggins...
scuse that typo,,,that's Scamp Walker...sorry Jerry.
The version of this song with harmonica is much better.
