i lived in NYC for 11 years and paid almost all my post tax income towards "living expenses (Rent + Utilities + Food). At the start of covid i moved into a rental in long island and now i have started looking for my own house in the area. NYC is really overrated, you dont realize how absurd the rents are until you see what you can buy with a 3500 mortgage. Leave NYC and build yourself a nice home with a garden and live your life.

Too bad Bloomberg destroyed downtown NY, though, what he destroyed can't be replaced. I'm just glad he left before he ruined Brooklyn. When I arrived in NYC in 1982, people with money had no power in the city. If you didn't have style, a talent, something original to add to the scene, you really had no place to go. Then in the 1980's money started to take over - table service etc. blah, blah, blah and the entire nightclub scene fell apart. NYC was best when the country thought it was dangerous, dirty and broke. I can't imagine it ever being a magnet for artists again. As I said Bloomberg destroyed it all with hotels and restaurants:-(
Grace I’m sorry you feel this way. NYC needs more money to come through not less. With money comes stability and progress for everyone involved. As we speak, the rich class are buying up real estate for cheap mortgage rates, this is why your not seeing “deal” on property. My father owns a couple rental properties in queens, Long Island city and the develops can’t keep up with the demand. Money will never leave nyc, and that is a beautiful thing :)
The number reason why people stayed here in NY is JOBS. Why would I want to stay when I can buy a big 5 bedroom house and live among law abiding citizens like myself. Especially if I can take my work with me. Also, it offers work balance and more time at home with kids.

Made it unsafe for people and businesses on multiple levels. As this is a free country, once people no longer feel safe where they live they tend to move away to places they feel are still safe. Of course this is expressed first by those who can most afford to leave, which are the people with the most money or physical property. The Mayor and Governor both forgot that the people who have taxable funds can actually leave and take those funds with them if they want, leaving the poor and untaxable behind who cannot afford to move. The lesson here is you cannot afford to alienate large numbers of people and strip away their right to safety and security just so you can jump on the pandering bandwagon. Should you do so, you'll lose your tax base.

And everything so far is still as expensive. There is no reason to be in NY, specially NYC, if you dont have to.

Also democrat states allowed crime to take off. Red states have kept the crime rate under control. Also red states were in good economic condition before the lockdown and were better able to recover whereas the blue States were already in a mess. Finally red states have better leaders. Greg Abbott is better than Cuomo.

Yes! I live in Anaheim California, and we've been considering AZ and Texas but one thing we hear a lot is how Californians flee the crumbling state , but bring their ideological cancer with them! I've contacted conservative agencies that help people move to the most conservative enclaves in the states you're considering moving to. I want to make sure I'm not mistaken for a leftist especially since I'm latina. Ive been a registered republican since 1996!

As a 59 year old Brit I have only ever been to NY twice. First time was early 1980's when it was still a cess pit with graffiti and litter everywhere, particularly the transportation systems. There was a character that went with that though. The second time was 2003 after it had been cleaned up and totally transformed. I am very sad as to what is happening to it now. Same applies to San Francisco. I lived and worked there for a while in my twenties. Please, America, vote for Trump in November and get your act together.
