  • In this video I use my Nikon 180-600 mm zoom lens for macro style close up photography. I look at how to take macro style images with a long lens rather than a macro lens. I cover the advantages of using a big zoom for close up photography, shutter speed, depth of field and the light and weather conditions that are best for macro and close up photography.

Pretty nice vid. I use my 200-500 at a minimum Focus distance of 7.1’ like you but mostly handheld. I have also used my 70-200 that is better quality lens at twice the price with a minimum Focus distance of around 4’ but 500mm at minimum brings me in much closer than the 200 at minimum FD. The 200-500 & MC-105G are my go to for wildlife & nature. Would like to try Sony’s new 70-200 F4 lens with the A7R5 also.

Great stuff again Steve. I have that lens too and the close focus ability, which is often ignored, is wonderful for close up "in habitat" shots like the stunning images you created today. The 24-120 f4S is good at it too but from closer quarters. I love macro and have a few lenses, close up filters etc but it's good to be reminded that in habitat shots are often the more pleasing images. Thanks for sharing, cheers, Robert. 😊

    Hi Steve
Another enjoyable video from you 🙂
I use both a long lens and a macro lens for photographing butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. I find that a long lens often provides an advantage given that the extra distance from the subject causes far less disturbance and an urge to fly off!
I hope you enjoyed your experience with Slovenian Bears …. I am still waiting for the video to appear 🙂
