    Great Video!
    On the drivers side, jack the car up, remove the wheel and the wheel liner. For most of these cars the plastic is quite brittle after a decade. It will make for a much easier removal of the light. You can also do this for the passenger side if you find yourself with little room and pressing on the coolant reservoir. That plastic is very brittle and you will break every tube off it....Turn that wrench!

    I changed out my fog light bulbs to HID's (8000k) 35w with AC ballasts on my 2009 SL550 (13k miles). Cost $40 for both. Took the wheel off then the wheel well housing (plastic...2 parts so the one closest the front of the car). Then the fog light is exposed and all you do is twist the fog light to your right(I think) and gently take it out. Disconnect and connect the ballast and HID to the Mercedes plug and you're good to go. I also changed out all the interior lighting to HID's (so no amber lighting) as well as the license plates lights to HID's. Next on the list are the main headlights (low & high beam) to HID's (8000k...55w with AC ballasts) and the light that turns on when you use the turn signal that lights up that side of the car.

    If someone is looking - the part number containing the broken plastic piece is A2218600392. This part number is for the whole headlight washer pipe. Part can be found used as well as new. If you look around you can get it new from MB OEM online store for around $50. Not cheap considering you only need this plastic piece. But if you would like to bring your car back to the state it was before you managed to make it worse, that is the way to go :)

    Great video. Thanks for posting. With your help, I changed the driver's side bulb today - I was not looking forward to it. The hardest part was getting the windshield washer reservoir out. The little connection on the side for the spray (the one you broke) is really difficult to reach. I somehow managed to get my hand down there to disconnect it, but it is a really tight space. Changing the bulb after that was easy. However, putting the reservoir back in...that's another struggle. There are two pins on the bottom, but of course, one is at an angle. And reconnecting the spray hose connection...wow. They do not make it easy.

      Hi Cuzimada
      Thanks for the comment, I'm glad I was able to help you not break anything haha.
      Mercedes doesn't make anything easy as it is so tight inside the engine compartment, but changing the bulb yourself saved you a lot of money. Glad this helped you. Have a great day!

      Hi Frank. Just a quick follow up. How did you get the windshield washer reservoir seated back down? Did you encounter any difficulty? I can't seem to get the bottom pins lined up to get the reservoir seated properly and I don't want to apply too much force just in case I break something. Any thoughts?

    • @FrankProfeta
      @FrankProfeta  8 років тому

      Hi Cuzimada. When you place the reservoir in the space it is supposed be in, you will need to lightly move it around until you feel the two plastic pins fall into the rubber grommets below. You will know you have it correct when you cannot move the reservoir by lightly twisting it. Then you need to press down, you will fell them pop into place. I hope this helps.

    • @FrankProfeta
      @FrankProfeta  7 років тому

      Hi Cuzimada. You must look down the back side of the reservoir and you will be able to see one of the holes the rubber dimple will fit in. At the same time you can also look at the flange that you removed the nut from and that will help you guide it in position lightly. Then when you wiggle it a bit, you should feel it set in place. Then push down with light to moderate force and you will feel the dimples set in place. I hope this helps. Let me know.

    Thanks! I have an 07 S550 and I noticed my passenger side high beam is a lot dimmer than my left, and my drives side low beam flickers every once in a while. I hadn’t really seen many videos on how to do this without removing the inner fender and doing it through the wheel well. Nice car too! I changed the headlight bulbs on my family’s W211 E350 and that was the worst job ever. The tabs that keep it in are really sharp and will always cut your hands.

    A return tip. always remove ground cable first. If you don't and touch your wrench to the body, you will get a great big arc from the positive terminal to ground which is still attached. It's also good to know how many batteries you have in your car.

    Thank you for the explanation and warning on the left hand side. To disconnect the pipe which you broke before lifting out the tank, you slowly wiggle the tank up and back towards the engine. When the tank is restricted in lifting any higher (as the tube is too short for the tank to come any higher) you wiggle your hand down and press the black catch to release the pipe. The black catch is on your video at 16.36 and is the bit where you say "Push this little button", but you push it whilst the container is still in place but lifted slightly backwards. The pipe comes off towards the front of the car and only then is the washer reservoir free to be lifted fully upwards. Place back on in reverse. It is a push-on catch and the catch release is the black square.

I was going to check the harness but did an online search and that is how ironically your video was the first to show up. Funny thing is that the warning in the dashboard is gone but the bulb will flicker randomly based on road vibration. The car was in for service so I think they have caused some harness to come loose. But it was hard to see last night. Figured I would ask you if there is something I can jiggle for the left front lamps around the area of the washer fluid bottle. I do not have time to go to the dealer as I have a lot of work to do. Thoughts?

      The right way would be to disconnect the negative side. Because if you disconnect the positive side first like I did and you accidentally Hit the wrench against the chassis, you could ground it out on the chassis you could short the system. I've been in the automotive line for a number of years and I just happened to take the positive side off carefully without grounding the wrench out. CAUTION: Those friends that have a headlight washer system DO NOT USE THIS METHOD. I changed mine using this method and ruined the Headlight washer system. Luckily I do not have headlight washer on my car but the feed lines are provided for future connection, You will end up breaking that connector and the reservoir will need a new connector. This is at the bottom and cannot be seen. There is no way to pull the washer reservoir out without breaking this Headlight washer feed line.
    Other than that thanks to Frank for helping us out - it works great. It will cost you more to fix the washer system now, because the entire front bumper will need to be removed to fix it plus the parts.
    For those that do not have a headlight washer system this will work, but you will have a broken line connector. The line connector is blocked down below (we cannot see it without a probe camera) you can plug the broken end of the Headlight feed line and life is good. So, again this procedure is great for those that do not have a Headlight washer. IF you do spend the $250. trust me it is not fun to remove the bumper.
    BTW the link Frank has provided to Amazon is great I got two bulbs for $28 bucks. God bless you bro.

      You can't just get that piece, it comes with the entire fluid line that connects to the jets. Last I remember it was appx $150 from Mercedes. I went to Home Depot and bought 2 ft. of clear hose (you won't even need that much) and a brass connector with some hose clamps. This worked great! Let me know if you need any further help.

    The Mercedes S550 is one model that has two batteries; one to start the engine, and another - called the auxiliary battery - to run the car's various electronics. Disconnecting the battery under the hood without disconnecting the battery in the trunk, is ill advised. The sequence for battery disconnecting, and reconnecting, on these cars is: First disconnect the trunk battery then disconnect the starter battery which is under the hood. When reconnecting, first reconnect the starter battery, then reconnect the trunk battery. Failing to do it this way can cause problems! As a test, you could disconnect ONLY the battery under the hood, then try turning on your headlights, I'll bet you still have power to the headlights.

    Battery,,, You have to disconnect the battery in the trunk. FYI,, unhook the battery in the engine compartment and switch on the lights... TADA,,, lights still work. The voltage going through there is that of a stun gun,,, dont get zapped, or killed.

      The xenon headlights will not come on with the front battery disconnected if they do you don’t have xenon headlights, The front battery is for the accessories and other systems. The back battery powers entire car that is where you jump start it if it’s dead no need to go through all that hassle of the panels and shit just to remove a headlight bulb. Always remember Mercedes are the best engineered cars in the world so there’s always going to be a trick it makes life easier to work on them if you know how!!!!👍🏼🤣🤣

      The bulbs I bought lasted 1 year then 1 went out. I called the company and they sent me 2 new bulbs within days. They had great customer service. Just be sure to not touch the bulb with your fingers, the oils on your skin are transferred to the bulb. When the bulb heats up over time it can cause the bulb to potentially malfunction. Hope this helps.

    Just my luck both times I had to replace the bulb it was on the driver's side, and yes I did break the clip the first time. and no, the Mercedes dealership does not have a replacement so I used a similiar one that the tech suggested. Second time changing it I had a much easier time.

      IIIEOMIII is right I changed mine using this method and ruined the Headlight washer system. Luckily I do not have headlight washer on my car. CAUTION: There is no way to pull the washer reservoir out without breaking the Headlight washer. I wish this person warned us about it. Other than that it works great. It will cost you more to fix the washer system now, because the entire front bumper will need to be removed to fix it plus the parts.

    Perhaps a little long winded. The passenger side bulb replacement is about a 5 minute job. Avoiding the voltage is as simple as taking the key out of the car and making sure no one opens a door. The lights won't activate if you don't do anything that would turn them on. I tell you that as a 25 year auto mechanic. I haven't done the driver's side so I can't comment on that part.
