It was the first realtor. They have comps and they decide which price is the best. Appraisers in a physical way, are usually not involved. This is illegal. The fair housing commission should be notified and whoever the appraisal and mortgage bank is should be either heavily fined, and made to publicly apologize for this discrimination.
The mortgage bank does not control the appraiser . The mortgage bank must have known something was not right with the appraisal in order to approve another one. That is very uncommon to allow another appraisal after one has already been completed. Also , research is done on the market BEFORE an appraisal is ordered to make sure the value needed to close the loan is likely to be confirmed by an appraisal. The appraiser has no motivation whatsoever to come in with a low value as they do not work for the bank. Loan officers get paid commission only on closed loans so they have zero motivation to scuttle their own loan. Mortgage banks make NO money if a loan does not close. Also , mortgage banks do not keep the loans , they sell them.

@@gee9291 I wrote this in reply to someone else before but you should read it too... In Florida, for assessed value they use a rate of about 85% of the state's appraisal's value (state has staff appraisers). The assessed value was about $315,000 according to their county records (public record everyone can look it up). $315,000 is about 85% of a value of $370,000. The 1st appraisal was about 10% from $370,000 and the 2nd appraisal was about 25% from $370,000. Then you have the fact that they are trying to say their house is 2,600sf with 4 bed and 4 bath when county shows it as 2,300sf with a 180sf addition (possibly unpermitted) and 3 bed and 3 bath. Essentially every single piece of data supports the 1st appraiser's results over the 2nd appraiser's results. Just the appreciation is enough. How did her house appreciate 58% in 3 years when the median appreciation in that time was 18%? And that 40% variance in appreciation is also the variance between the 2 appraisals! What a coincidence! Math... it is a hell of a tool.
I am a black woman . A very black woman . I was lucky to raise my boys in a million dollar home, in a million dollar predominantly white neighborhood. We lived in the home for almost 17 years and loved it . When we first got it I couldn’t wait to make it ours . I picked every wall color , fussed over every door nob , planted every plant and spent sleepless nights over every pool tile and light fixture that I put into it . It was almost 6000 sq ft and I wanted to make sure every corner felt just as warm and cozy as the last . It was a beautiful but practical home . It was not a museum but a home that hosted fancy cocktail parties , with as much frequency as birthday and Tupperware parties . We made many wonderful memories there . Last year after a long struggle with cancer I decided it was time to down size . I was tired of maiming a 6 bedroom 8 bath home . From my experience as a real estate agent of almost 20 years , I knew that to get the most out of my home and to sell it quick I had to remove all evidence that a black family lived in the home . Luckily we could afford to move out and leave the home “neutrally” staged for sale. Like this woman I was ashamed I had to do what I did . I had loved , designed and cared for that home . We got many offers and the buyers’ agents called with compliments from the potential buyers about how well kept and beautifully designed and decorated the house was . Never once seeing the faces of the woman and family that had made it so 😢😢😢

Well, it is sad, you feel you had to hide your heritage, to sell your house, for a good price. To a degree we all compromise and keep certain things hidden, just to appear neutral, while blending with expectations. We have a world that is complex while tolerating hypocrisy on many levels. We navigate through it, but should never take personally , the obtuse minds of some people, we may have to deal with as they are insignificant.
I did this with my boyfriend when I needed fair treatment. I would have him handle things. It always went easier for him . He was always shocked at the results.

People asking for the appraiser to be outed don't understand that this is a systemic issue not an individual issue. The second appraiser could have just as easily devalued her home had she not taken down all evidence that a black person lived there.
Sad to say, but My white husband and I have faced the same scenario many times over, as I am sure many other couples like us have had to endure. Sad reality that no one speaks about.
Look people like to live where they feel safe and comfortable! Maybe I should go to the south Bronx and make sure I have on my finest clothes and my gold chain. Why would I do that ? It’s funny though, people look at things from one side. Many areas in the Bronx used to be nice areas, now they’re some of the worst ghettos in New York. Hmmm., let’s look at things from all sides. Oh , I don’t agree I’m a racist. right ?
It’s true . My parents purchased a home built from the ground in a majority white neighborhood. When my Dad received a promotion it was time to move. The real estate agent told us politely to remove all of our pictures and basically leave no evidence that we was a black family. Sad but true !!!
Realtors always tell the sellers about making their place neutral , ready to sell to anyone, so they want you to remove all family pics and personal stuff. You can sell much faster if your place looks like " Home and Gardens." I expect you hired a black realtor. No white realtor would have told you that !!!!!
@@linanicolia1363 No ,she was white . I mean of course that is not her exact words but that was the just of the conversation. I guess you was there , too ! I have no need to lie !
This is systemic racism. I hate how privileged people say “Black people just need to work harder. Why are they always in poverty.” These type of things happen more often than you think. Black schools are devalued by the state. Black neighborhoods, etc. It’s a system in place to constantly keep black people lower.
She probably didn't say the names as part of the media covering for companies in fear of suit. The rabbit hole runs so deep. I can only wonder if those companies are ran by bigger corporations. Smh would've been nice 2 hear what he felt
If there was "actual" racism that happened here don't you think that's what these "journalists" would've done? Maybe would've heard something along the lines of "we reached out to the original appraiser and received no comment." As an appraiser myself, I have no problem defending any of my appraisals and the reasons I came up with the value I did. From this video, there is absolutely no evidence that racism occurred. Just speculation. What did the owners originally pay for the home and when was home purchased? If it wasn't too long ago there could be a pretty accurate ballpark figure from appreciation (time adjustments) alone. Was the original appraisal actually low? Was the 2nd appraisal extremely overvalued?(that happens all the time by the way). Were quality comps used in each appraisal? What was experience level of each appraiser involved? I mean, God forbid we get any actual details here.....
This is why we say black lives matter. Because literally we know that all lives have same value. But in America and at the same time, they literally cost less.
As a Black American who owns property, it’s is a given to remove all signs that black people live in the home when you appraise or sell your home. It’s is infuriating but necessary to get a fair price. Even then, if they are determined, they will find out and you’ll need to start over again like she did.

But guess what, nobody is gonna be held accountable, because.....America.
Jacksonville here. I'm not surprised. The Appraiser should be confronted for answers. Start exposing these people who feel the need to try lift their self esteem by tearing down ours.
I am an appraiser. I can tell you 1st hand there is absolutely no motivation to lie because we all know that if we do the following things can happen:
1) the appraisal will get challenged. That means I am creating more work for myself having to defend the challenges. Everyone can do a ROV (reconsideration of value) that the appraiser must answer to.
2) If an appraiser did lie and it gets challenged and they can't defend it then the appraisal gets thrown out. Even if they didn't lie and the people just complain they will order a 2nd appraisal. So, being racist on an appraisal and going low doesn't ensure they will actually even end up with that appraisal.
3) if an appraiser has a lot of their reports challenged and then they have to constantly reorder 2nd appraisals (or more) then that hurts the appraiser's rating with that client. That means that you aren't getting much if any work. Why risk losing money over something that, again, isn't even a sure fire way to sabotage someone?
4) If an appraiser is suspected of truly showing discrimination and a complaint is filed, that is taken very seriously. You would definitely lose your certification over that. You could be sued and we have to hold minimum 1 million dollar policies. Why risk all that time in training and education (it takes about 5 years to really get going and it isn't easy to find mentors) and a pretty good income considering all the other things I said?
Now factor that into what I said about appreciation rate. Here is an easy way to view it:
Historical rate over 3 years= 9%
Current rate over 3 years= 18%
1st Appraiser's rate over 3 years= 18%
2nd Appraiser's rate over 3 years= 58%
Does that make any sense???
Lastly, her house has an unpermitted addition. This adds in GLA, an additional bedroom and an additional bathroom. Right there could be a large value variance if the 1st appraiser (rightfully) did not include it and the 2nd appraiser (incorrectly) did include it. Add in that there is an accepted 10% variance between appraisals because they are opinions of value and not fact and you have a pretty large amount. Then add in time of sale factors and you don't know how long they waited between doing the 2 appraisal. Just a couple of new sales can change a lot in a short period of time.
After all of that, if you still feel this was racism even though the news story only gave you 1 side of the story then I have to say I do not think you are being honest. Either with me or yourself but there is no way you can deny what I said.

I live close to Jacksonville FL what is the name of the appraisal company she used prior?? I want to know who NOT to use.
Never once seeing the faces of the woman and family that had made it so 😢😢😢
Beautifully written💜

Well, it is sad, you feel you had to hide your heritage, to sell your house, for a good price. Realtors always tell the sellers about making their place neutral , ready to sell to anyone, so they want you to remove all family pics and personal stuff. Smh would've been nice 2 hear what he felt
Expose the appraiser! This is not new, but for this much of a discrepancy, the first appraisal company needs to be outted.
Correction, all lives are not valued the same, come again.
As a Black American who owns property, it’s is a given to remove all signs that black people live in the home when you appraise or sell your home. It’s is infuriating but necessary to get a fair price. Even then, if they are determined, they will find out and you’ll need to start over again like she did.
It's actually racism that causes so many white bigots to claim angrily that "white privilege" and racism don't exist in America.
This isn’t a surprise at all. I’ve seen this personally.
