- This course is about "The Hospital Planning, Programming & Design" (Fall 2020 - LIU). This is the second seminar about "Hospital Life Cycle Journey From Strategic Plan To Demolition".
In this part, we start with a hospital life cycle journey.
Then, a general talk about hospital departments is made. Then, a tour to following departments will include:
- Emergency Department (ER)
Lahey Hospital & Medical Center
- Surgery Department
Methodist Hospital
- Laboratory Department
Renown Regional Medical center
- Radiology Department
Unity Point Health Saint Luke's Hospital
- Obstetric Department
Sibley Memorial Hospital
- CSSD Department
After, a tour for oncology specialty hospital "Royal Marsden Hospital" UK, which is built according to British Standards "Health Building Notes (HBNs) & Health Technical Memoranda (HTM)", will be made.

This video shows how much work behind the scenes is needed to have a hospital. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, that's right.

Is a relation between hospital strategic plan, hospital operational phase and automation? If yes what's this relation?
Hi, Mark. The aim behind a strategic plan is to develop an efficient fully operational profitable hospital. This can't be achieved without understanding hospital annual operating budget.
In a hospital annual operating budget, the big portion of expenses is the salaries with their related benefits. It constitutes around 60 %. Thus, lowering hospital staff through automation and robots will minimize this big portion "60%". Consequently, more profit will be achieved and this will make investors happy.
Thus, a hospital strategic planner should think of every bit in hospital operational expenses, and find solutions to minimize them.
🙋🏻♀️ How long does it take to have an operational hospital?
Hi. Sally. The period for reaching an operational hospital depends on the type of hospital (General, Specialty, Medical Center or Medical City).
For a conventional general hospital, it takes 3-4 years from strategic planning into design phase. Also, it takes 3-4 from construction to commissioning phase. Thus, total period will be 6-8 years.
However, for a novel hospital trend, it usually takes more. For example, in Humber River Hospital, firstly fully digital hospital in North America, since it was a novel trend "fully digital", it had taken around 13 years from strategic planning into design phase. However, the construction phase and hospital equipping had taken around 3 years.
Thanks for your question.

Can you explain more about the commons between human body system and hospital department? (•‿•)
Hi, Franco. This will be my pleasure.
All body systems and organs in all humans are in a fixed ideal position in our body. For example, most people knows the location of body organs (brain, heart, lungs, kidneys...etc.), but anyone has asked what the reason behind the fixed perfect location of these organs. I will give examples to demonstrate this.
For example "the cardiovascular system", the reason behind closed proximity of lungs to the heart is the high gas exchange (O2 & CO2) between them. This close proximity is aimed to minimize the time of travel and return of blood from lungs into heart. Also, the distance and blood vessels diameter between heart and brain is based on the big demand of brain for oxygen supply.
Similarly, "the nervous system", the brain location is in a close proximity to eyes, ears, nose and tongue because of large data transmission between brain and these organs through the nerve cells (neurons). Whereas, the distance becomes longer for other organs with less data transmission needs (e.g. kidneys, large and small intestines...etc.).
This is called human body engineering by the creator "God". Also, a hospital planner needs to take this model "human body" as a source for planning, programming and designing hospitals.
