You can (almost) kill him the first time you meet him, and get 1400xp for it too. You just can’t approach him as a group, and you have to turn on non-lethal attacks so you just get him down to 1hp (so he passes out). You can also talk to Harleep and then tease Raphael about how bad he is in bed (also Raphael is the bottom so he is basically getting f**ked by himself) 😂
His 'Gods damn it' just hits harder when you realize he was more upset that, yet again, his ability to consent is momentarily yanked away by a more powerful being. Raphael treated him like a slave for his own amusement. Note to Self: serve up a knucklebuster parfait to Raph.

The way Astarion is able to only appear (and I say appear because it’s pretty evident how much this actually bothered him) slightly perturbed by Raphael doing this, tells me there were enough times for him to be naked in front of an audience of more than 1 or 2 for him to be used to it. And given that we know Cazador used him for his own personal gains, it churns my stomach to think of the situations in which someone might develop that kind of comfort with being openly humiliated in front of many people.
The “oh gods damn it” like he just stubbed his toe, rather than being stripped, and he didn’t try to cover himself or anything really bothers me. Like, I can’t even imagine what he’s gone through…
I think it's less to do with Astarion being used to/comfortable with these kinds of situations, and knowing how to mask his discomfort so as to not draw unnecessary attention his way - as it would always leads to some kind of horrible punishment for not being a good little thrall and playing along. (i.e. - he was conditioned to behave this way). Evidence of this is how he reacts to Tav's experiencing the consequences of Harleep's deal (where Tav will feel everything that Harleep does when he's using Tav's likeness for sex). He recognizes what's happening and, if Tav replies that they'll just have to get used to it, Astarion says they can think that, but they never will.
Fun fact (though I might be wrong - I only had a couple of sources to check) but you only see his face during this line in the version where Raphael strips him. In the normal version we're seeing Raphael when he makes the comment about scars telling stories. They recorded and included this JUST so you could see Astarion's reaction to being stripped, not his reaction to the scars comment.
Gods, I'd give Raphael's head as a chew toy to Scratch, if I could I'd cover Astarion's back with something. His resigned face tells it all, knowing his backstory, dammit.

Same, and I don't even remember him mentioning it to Rafael when I played as wood elf bard and have seen his back but didn't know it was Infernal. I just saw it and drew it for him in sand. Bear in mind, I barely scratched the surface of act 3 with my first playthrough, but I know what happens in the "finale" with Cazador (possible choices and their consequences). As tiefling bard, I told him it was Infernal, then in another scene he asked me if I could read it, but it was only a few words. In a later cutscene, I think he studied infernal contracts and told me he wanted to ask Raphael. And then Raphael was absolutely normal both while Astarion was asking and while Raphael revealed to us later what the pact was about. I actually like Raphael as a character, the charismatic and charming devil/demon archetype (similar to Crowley from Supernatural and Lucifer from... "Lucifer" 😅). But damn, there was no need to do my boy Astarion here like that 😢.

I think you can avoid it by just not choosing the 'scars??' line? Of course the gentle breakup is imo a really nice way to interact with his character anyway, but this Is avoidable w/o sleeping with him
You just have to dodge option 1 - "What scars?" That's the only one where Raphael strips him. I just met Raphael last night while not romancing Astarion, so I know it's doable.

And then now looking at the dialogue I realize that this only happens if you don't sleep with Astarion in the beginning
I'm guessing that you get this scene only if you haven't had the scene where Tav and him discuss his scars? I'm curious how to avoid it so I can get this one instead?
In case you haven't figured it out, you need to avoid romancing Astarion and then choose the first dialogue option shown here. Basically, you can't have seen his scars already, so your Tav wouldn't know about it. Getting into a romance will automatically strike out that dialogue option.
I have romanced Astarion in all my play throughs. I got it after the new patch, I think it was a bug. It happened in the inn when we get there. Raphael was sitting at the chess table but Mol wasn't she was standing around doing something else. I thought it was weird since I was romancing him and we did see his scars. I think I even did the scene where I drew them out for him. Unless something has changed this was the only time it happened. Maybe it's also do to me totally telling Raphael when we first met I was not going to have anything to do with him again. I got an entirely different interaction from him as well then I normally do.
Is this what happens if you never ask about Cazador or have sex with him? Because when you romance him, you should already know about Cazador and his scars .

Well in my first playthrough I didn't romance him, and I didn't get the scene where he examines his scars. Maybe I didn't do enough long rests, so I missed it.
@@makani_rae Ok then. Well it's one piece of a contract his master made with a devil, where he will sacrifice Astarion and his other slaves to gain powers. And stop watching spoilerish videos and go play it. It's worth it. ^^ You can find Astarion right next to the crashed ship.
@@makani_rae There's as much role-playing as there is combat. If you do it cleverly and sneak past villains, or convince them to attack each other or similar, some fights can be avoided.

@@makani_rae There's as much role-playing as there is combat. If you do it cleverly and sneak past villains, or convince them to attack each other or similar, some fights can be avoided.
