Modern gaming was not what I dreamed it could be 30 years ago. Playing Rogue Squadron on the GameCube at release was something.
@@Graterstuuf 100 percent. The n64 to gamecube was one hell of a jump and games like rogue squadren, netroid prime, F Zero GX and even mario Kart double dash all ran at 60fps while also looking fantastic!

I started gaming in 2001 at 4 years old with Super Mario Bros on the NES, Yoshi’s Island on the Gameboy color, and Halo CE on the original Xbox. You cannot recapture the pure amazement our minds experienced with something so novel back then. We’re close to the point of diminishing returns and unchecked corporate greed in our hobby but there’s still plenty of amazing games coming out a have come out. It’s easy to be cynical and focus on the negative

Why are all you complaining? What did you expect. In 2020 the ps5 was 500$ and a 2 tb Ssd back then was 400$ and 300$ on sale. So 800 back then. Ps5 is still 500. So your paying 100$ extra for the 2tb ssd and 100$ extra for more power. Besides the disk drive whats the problem. If they released at 599 with a 1tb drive you would all complain about that.
Even 1tb 599 model would be better. Why did they put 2tb in there?

This generation has been quite disappointing and pathetic. We're 4 years in and companies are still focusing primarily on hardware instead of delivering unique software designed for current technology. There are way too many cross generation games made with last generation tech (Unreal Engine 4 for instance), remasters and remakes. The fact that the PS5 Pro doesn't have an optical drive makes the original PS5 model the best Sony console this generation because it's the only one that reads discs without having to connect to the internet.
I have spent close to 1k on games this year on pc and we get a lot of the same shit so idk why you ppl keep acting like we have no great games. They are everywhere.

I remember when everyone made fun of the Wii U. Was it an amazing console? Uh debatable. It had lacking hardware but at least it was trying something new and unique and games worked different on the Wii U (if they tried). There was a reason to actually get it. This is just stupid.

No that’s not how it works. Consoles are not PC’s. PC’s are not consoles. Phones are not consoles. Consoles are not phones. The entire PC v s Console debate is completely off base of what the point of playing on a console provides vs a PC. Different things.
@@BrainWasherAttendent consoles are literally just pcs with a locked down operating system, they use off the shelf parts (an rdna gpu and a ryzen zen 2 cpu).
@@BrainWasherAttendent It used to be, but PCs and consoles are closer than ever before. Consoles used to be plug & play, but that hasn't been the case since the 360/PS3/Wii days. Now you have to install the games, download a mega sized patch, and even if you have a disk, it's not a guarantee that the entire game is on there (As we just witnessed with Star Wars Outlaws). And with the disappearance of physical games, consoles are legitimately losing their appeal to many of their users (Myself included). Now all you get with a console, is a PC with less features and less games.
Once physical games disappear from consoles, I have zero reason to own one. Why would I buy a machine for the same price (or more) than an equivalent PC, when all the games release on PC as well? Not to mention console manufacturers sell their digital games at huge prices, compared to PC. The only exception would be Nintendo, as they're the only company that doesn't release their games on PC.
@@BrainWasherAttendent Consoles, with the exception of Switch, are indeed just low tier PC's. The allure of consoles for me was physical collecting and exclusives. Now that everything is being ported to PC and companies are axing physical media, there is absolutely zero reason to choose a console over PC sans price. Switch is an exception since they incorporate handheld elements and embrace physical media and retain their exclusives, which I don't see Nintendo reversing any time soon.
I have a PS5 as my first console and the gaming experience is much better. It is game focused only, I get updates on mobile app once a game is installed and ready to play and most importantly there are no launchers, so starting a game is simple and you can just pause/save the game and shut down the console. I also have a PC and there I have steam launcher first and then other launchers after I click on the game and sometimes the game does not open and I have to redo the process. Also for same game performance it costs approx. twice for the PC but the PC is a multipurpose device so two different things here.
However the game prices have been outrageous lately and then I need to pay to play multiplayer which I find the biggest problem on consoles. The game library of the PS5 is also super inferior to the steam library.

If $300 10 years ago was $300 today, I’d agree with you. The ps5 pro costs $170 more than the ps4 in 2016 adjusted for inflation. This pushes the pro console further into the niche hardcore space where it will still sell well enough to make Sony a profit and be able to claim having the best running machine for GTA6 for at least 18 months. Only the biggest game of the decade

Haven't bought a PS5 and have zero plans too , I am completely enjoying my Nintendo Switch and really am only looking forward to the Switch 2. The fact that Nintendo expressly said in their investor conference that they intend to focus on physical games is another reason I intend on supporting Nintendo for the Switch 2.

I usually roll my eyes at these online reactionary situations in the gaming sphere or otherwise, but it's impossible to deny that this reveal was absolutely disastrous. The pricing and lack of features (or a flippin' disk drive!!) isn't just anti-consumer, it's actively contemptuous of the consumer. If Sony wasn't in such a comfortable place in the gaming industry, this could have been a Sega Saturn situation for them. Do not take your customers for granted. I expect a significant price reduction in response to the consumer feedback. Their hands are tied, really.
I already lost my care for consoles after buying the ps5 and having like 3 exclusives worth a damn.

I just bought a PS4 Slim in 2023, and it's been treating me amazing for games I missed out on in the previous decade. I have no wish to get even a base PS5 because I think it has no value, let alone a $800 box that's more expensive than the gaming PC I already built myself.
best decision ever, bro. Theres no breathtaking games on PS5 which wont show up on PC as well(get that high end graphics card for 800 bucks instead of buying a pro). And for me as an RPG fan theres even less reason to buy a PS5 since every game also got released on PS4. I dearly miss the trophy system but Sony lost me at this point.
@@qewrasdf Thankfully Steam has achievements too if you buy games on there. Everything I want to play is either on PS4 or PC, so why buy a PS5. The only reason I got a PS4 was because it was $140 and I like consoles, but that price point is enough for so many PC upgrades lol.

PC player here. 3 years ago I bought quite a decent graphic card (rtx 3070) and a 1440p 165hz monitor. and I never play with max graphical settings because I hardly notice any difference between max and high. All that max settings does is lowering your framerates and increasing your GPU/CPU temperatures. RTX is in my opinion totally useless, I get half the framerate when I have RTX on. Some games get hardly playable when framerate suddenly goes under 20 fps. There's also DLSS or FSR that are to me nothing but a scam, they are supposed to improve your game but they actually make them look blurrier, especially grass or thin particules. This to say, the purpose of all those "revolutionary" technologies is just to convince you to upgrade your hardware and spend more money. Music have been using the same trick with High Quality 32 bits or "the better vinyl sound". Dont waste your money in things you dont need like a slightly better PS5. Save your 800 bucks and instead buy a Steam deck
$700 + $80 for disk drive + $30 for stand +$80/year to play online? You could easily get a pc at that price and be a very happy gamer. CONsoles used to be CONvenient, not just a CON.
Heck no. Easy pass. The “upgrade” isn’t worth the price hike. I’m focused on gameplay in my games, not “hey I can see that random fence in the background a little more clearly.” No disc drive is just the icing on the crap sundae.

This industry has gotten so weird. Hardware cadence has contracted while software cadence has widened. It really should be the other way around. The situation is exhausting for people who just want some new games to look forward to.
The fact that they showed this off with The Last of Us II really says it all imo. All that shiny new tech, and nothing new to even use it on. Knack 2 never looked so good.

I was holding out waiting for the PS5 Pro to release but now, after looking at the price and the no-disc drive thing, I think I'll get the regular PS5 and it might be my last Playstation, and I've had all of them except 5! I hope Nintendo takes this as an opportunity to come out with the Switch 2 with a competitive price and still with physical media to completely crush Sony!

They had it in their hands to absolutely crush it: 700$ (disc drive included) and introducing backwards compatibility with PS1/PS2/PS3, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation. Everyone would be happy and they would sell like crazy.

I heard from a Nintendo rep that Nintendo isn’t even thinking of announcing a new console until mid 2026. They are so shaken up over what happened when they announced the Wiiu during the Wii era and what a failure that was. So they don’t want to repeat that mistake. Plus the Switch is still selling really well.
@@anom5389 Nintendo has explicitly stated there will be a hardware announcement this fiscal year (ends March 2025) but they COULD delay the release into 2026 if they wanted to.

Where I live if I were to get the disc drive it is going to be around 1250 usd before tax. There is NO chance I am spending that on a "Pro" version console.
I was planning to use a Gamestop Canada trade in promotion to upgrade my PS5 to the Pro. I expected to pay a couple hundred dollars in addition to the trade credit, but following the reveal I now know that I would still have to fork over more than $600 CAD (Pro + disc drive). That's not happening.
$700 + the disc drive for another $80 is definitely expensive but for me personally something I'll finally bite the bullet on.
I pre-ordered and had a PS5 on launch day. I got it for Demon's Souls. For a month or two after beating Demon's Souls I noticed that I was only really using it as a 'beefed up' PS4 for the most part. So back then I sold it and I think used with the copy of Demon's Souls I managed to sell the thing for 8 or 900 bucks. This was during that Covid peak where games were crazy. It was never my intention to flip the system, but I remember what happened for me with the Wii U where I bought that thing for Pikmin 3 & an Animal Crossing game (that never came) and held onto the system for like 2 or 3 years with nothing to play. So I sold the thing and told myself I'd either wait for a special edition PS5 or a Pro system. Since then there's been basically no special editions, so we're at the pro now, which is why I'm going to pick it up.
If I already had a PS5 the upgrade would be something tough to jump on given the price point. While it's still possible to buy an original or slim model instead of diving head into Pro, I never got the PS4 pro either, so there's some novelty there. I'm still gaming for the most part on my base PS4 and that thing is really lacking these days.
I don't think the PS5 Pro reveal was a total disaster but they didn't add enough to justify the price I don't think. I was originally guessing that it was digital only to keep the cost down to $599 and you'd have to buy the drive separately but for $699 + the 80 for the drive.. sheesh.
I just bought a PS5 Slim (w/ disc drive) two weeks ago, and it's doing everything I need it to. As far as "Pro upgrades" go, this is not worth the price of entry. I could only equate it to getting a cheeseburger that has two slices of cheese on it already, and then just adding a third slice for the hell of it. No noticeable difference in taste, and it's just a little extra that isn't really needed.
same my got that exact model on ebay used from sony themselves for 349usd as a backup box since im a pc gamer 1st and foremost and my pc is very finicky, this is just sony thinking they are apple. they are not.

It potentially moving forward is the start of children being priced out at that price point Id be fully expecting a disc drive for that price I won’t be upgrading & will the price point come down ? unlikely gone are the day’s of system’s virtually being sold at cost at the end of it’s lifespan I’m more likely to invest in a gaming laptop upgrade ….
There is a history of new systems having hardware problems. It could be something as simple as overheating.
It might be a good idea to wait before purchasing.

They should slow down generations and make the pro spec machines into the actual main consoles. This would help bring back the wow factor to new generations.
I think that taking wind away from the next console generation is very understated, and really why so many people don’t get why people have just had a lack of enthusiasm about the ps5 and X series consoles
If diskless only on ps6, and Xbox has a disk drive, ps6 will lose badly. Plus, not many people will buy ps5 pro anyway.
Just got the original PS5 used with a second controller mint condition. Playing PS4 games at better frame rate. Last console I will ever have. Going to PC full time and really enjoying OBLIVION from GOG right now, only GOG no STEAM crap, no rentals no nothing. Might go the one eyed jack way just for the fact that companies are greedier than ever right now and this comes from someone that has 440 original games just for the XBOX 360 in his collection.
7th gen was the last gen for collecting and having games that will work for ever as long as the hardware is functional. Never turning back.

I'm still using a 1080p tv and with the space I have in my room I couldn't fit larger than a 32" which I'm told is too small to appreciate the detail from 4K let alone 8K. I'm sure the graphics focus is nice for the people with giant tvs in big living rooms who don't have to share with others but I wonder how much of the playstation audience that actually represents?
You summed it up well Pete. And instead of keeping people in the job in their studios they invested in this instead, first Concord now this, to quote Jurassic Park they were "preoccupied with whether they could that they didn't stop to think if they should"..... I bet it was project that was started when they first realeased the original PS5 and it built up so much momentum they couldn't help and not release it.

You know when a console outprices hobbies like Warhammer and D&D collecting you know something is seriously wrong.
If Nintendo's successor system is half of the PS5 Pro's price then they will ride the money train for the next 7 years.
And this is right after announcing that their controllers are going up in price. Most consoles are usually dropping prices 4 years into their life, but everything PS5 is going up.

What I'm more surprised by is that anyone was surprised by the absurd price in the first place. This is the same company that actually increased the price of the base PS5 model 2 years after launch in almost all regions outside of the US, and then released a Slim that's essentially the same price as the base model (or in some regions even more expensive).
I’m as tech brained as it comes and even I see the writing on the walls with this console. The future is PC straight up. I love physical collecting is why I buy games on PS5 still but PS6 onward just seems like it’s going to be digital and probably cost just as much as this PS5 Pro does.
At least on PC any games I bought on steam 10-15 years ago I can still play now.
They keep wanting to scrap the disc drive knowing there's a ton of physical copy buyers. Wish they would stop trying to strip features and calling it progress.

A total joke. 799 euros in Europe! I've been using my PS5 for over a year now and I'm perfectly happy with it. Well, I had extra expenses for the black colors. There's no reason whatsoever to upgrade. Sony is getting so greedy too.

I am also fine with the base PS5, but if I were in need of a new PS5 I might go for it. People spend more on GeForce GFX cards. I have to admit that it would be kind of nice to not have to choose between two graphics modes. I often find myself switching back and forth to see what I might be missing.
Astro Bot actually doesn't have ANY ray tracing. That's very impressive. It makes great use of SSR.
I used to be huge into PCs, even going into business building and selling PCs, but I just got burned out on keeping up with constantly upgrading the graphics card and RAM. Then having many of the older games having issues playing on Windows 2000, etc.. I know that's gotten better, but still. The main thing now is that PC physical releases are nearly nonexistent, and I buy most of my games as physical (on PS4, PS5, Nintendo).

The original 3DO system cost way too much money for what you got. What's the difference here, then?
Okay, the 3DO at least had several games that helped to showcase and sell it ... though it was still too expensive for most gamers to go for it.
I am a weirdo in that for certain games on ps5 I find myself constantly switching between fidelity and performance mode. And rarely do I find myself happy with either (performance rt should be the standard imo). So this console is literally made for me but nothing about what they showed justified ever needing to actually buy one ESPECIALLY at the price they’re asking. This feels like it’ll sell as well as psvr 2 tbh
I really do hope no one buys this just to prove a point, normally I’m quite indifferent to controversial prices and choices when it comes to consoles, if you want it, buy it. But Sony have been getting too cocky after being so successful with PS4. I saw someone compare them to Apple with this announcement and I have to agree, it’s a sad sight.
As far as the diuea "Just buy a pc" someone like me already has a nice gmaing oc and consoles. And I may want ps5 pro if it really does what it says, as I have some cash to burn for my main hobby. I don't know yet, gfotta wait for digital foundry analysis and reviews see if it is priced right/.
ISn't this OK thogh?? Most of us will skip it, and a small amount will want tobuy it, so it exists for them. Is a ferrari too expensive? yeah, so I don't buy one. Same thing here. It would be worse if it was even cheaper but also beter, so we would feel bad we had th ebas version and felt riped off we need the new one. Thsi is good we don't need this, so we won't miss it, and those that want it wil enjoy it.
The improvement is negligible and the price is absurd, plus fewer and fewer exclusives.

When a huge percentage of games still come out and most importantly play fine on PS4, buying a PS5 Pro is a joke.
I think Sony are massively overestimating how many people even have the kind of state of the art tvs you need to even consider this a worthwhile purchase. Most people have tvs that are at least a few years old if not older and play games fairly casually. They just wanna plug their console into their beat up old telly and play games on the couch after work. The market for this just isn't there imo.
Only reason the PS5 Pro would be worth it, is if it's capabilities for Ray Tracing is greatly improved.
Devs are more and more leaning into Ray Tracing, and almost every new AAA game released
uses it, but PS5 and Series X just can't do Ray Tracing very well, and it looks really bad in every example I've seen.
Like the new Star Wars Outlaws. Everything in that game that uses Ray Tracing looks like a pixelated mess.
PSVR 2, the Portal, and now the 5 Pro…
As I've said before, millions of Playstation owners abandoned Sony permanently after the PS2. So the ones who are left have to pay Sony extra for the millions who left and will never come back. Its simple math.

That was rough. So short, weird, barely talked about the new specs and they weren't amazing. Not a single new game? Only old and very few interesting games with Pro enhancements shown. No disk drive and 800 Euro? Seemed more like a test run/experiment to see if they can get away with asking for a premium price and also digital only to see how the response is in advance of the PS6. The only way they can somehow diminish the damage is if they put up a great State of Play later this month and show actual new and more games that benefit from the Pro.
The ONE main problem is the value... It doesn't feel like near enough of an upgrade to justify the price. Literally the ONLY thing they improved was the GPU, that's it!
Now I know top end GPU's can be expensive, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look like a HUGE GPU leap. So why the whole $200 price increase then?? Where's the Sony discount for buying a new console?
For what we are getting, I think ppl would have been MUCH happier with a $600 price point as that feels much more fair. $700 without even a disc drive feels like Sony trying to gouge us on this one. No thanks. Not til the price drops to $600!
I can tell you damn certain that I for one will never convert to PC. For one thing I don't wanna have to go out and upgrade my graphics card every damn month. Secondly, there SO many to choose from that all have weird names that I'd rather just get a console. I know what an Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro is. I don't know what a Turbo GFXQ2000TC is, which are the random names gaming PC's have. Like, can people point me in the direction of who makes these PCs? With consoles it is once again easy to tell; you have Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. But who are good companies to buy gaming PCs from? And what is the name of a good gaming PC? And I don't want an answer that could be a 15 minute youtube video in itself, just a short n sweet answer like an elevator pitch. Tell me in 30 sec what I need to buy.
Didn't have the PS5, and I am not planning on getting the Pro anytime soon. Or maybe, never.
I'm still head over heels about the Switch, playing Unicorn Overlord. Graphics outdated for the Switch? Well, that is subjective. Good thing for Switch owners like me, I don't have to worry about Ray tracing, GPU, and AI controlled performance.

It use to be a console would be released with a slew of exclusive’s. Then after a couple of years the console maker would reduce the price. As the console reached the end of its life they would release a reworked model that was much cheaper. It’s pure greed that is going to stunt the growth of the industry and potentially lead to another crash.
Kind of reminds of the New3DS totally unnecessary consoles.
I'd like to FOMO buy a PS5 Pro, but I'm content with my PS5 + steamdeck combo.
