Living on a fixed income, I always call the vet 1st and find out all the fees for everything I am concerned about, and ask what fees are for each issue. I find this extremely helpful!

I am in my 60s and have had cats all my life. All have been strays, or unwanted cats from someone we knew. It used to be you would get your cat fixed, wormed, and shots and never go back to the vet unless there was some kind of problem, like a bee sting, dog attack, or hit by a car. It was understood if the treatment would be too costly, euthanasia would be necessary with no shame. Now, like you said, your prices reflect the expensive equipment that most people will never be able to afford the services of. My cat developed allergies and has lost half of her fur. I can't afford allergy testing, my SSDI is less than $1000 a month. I go every 4 to 6 weeks to get a Depo shot when they throw a surprise exam in one visit that more than doubles what I have been paying per visit for over a year. It hasn't been budgeted in and no warning. I also know that if she doesn't somehow "outgrow" her allergies and the shot is no longer feasible I may have to make a hard choice so my baby isn't in constant agony. Antihistamines haven't helped. I refuse to feel guilt for not being able to pay $300-$500 for an annual visit (half my monthly income). I strongly disagree that you have to be able to afford these costs to responsibly own a pet. I make sure they are fixed, so they don't add to the population and get them their shots. I have given the poor cats a better life than they would have on the streets.

@@desireecoleman611 But like I said, we save them from a much worse life. My baby was going to be taken out to the country to be dumped by a relative of a co-worker. She knew my son fed the area strays *we had 8 at one time) and asked if she could bring it over by us so she could be fed with the others. I also left a small opening in the skirting around my trailer so they could go under there to get out of the elements. Of course I said yes she could bring it, and she brought this tiny ball of black fur. I was afraid the hawks would get it! My son already had an inside cat, so I made her mine and that was 12 years. My son's inside cat was found as a kitten outside the bank where my daughter worked and brought it to him, and now she's a 20 pound 16 year old cat. Even if we only save one from a terrible life, we're doing good.
Honestly, for me, it’s not necessarily the financial cost of a surgery, but more of the emotional cost on my cat’s part. I’m more willing to find the finances for a young cat who has years of their life left. For a senior cat, I want to help ensure they’re comfortable and able to live their best life for as long as possible. Going through a surgery, only to get a few months back just isn’t worth the stress in their life, in my opinion.
Talk to your vet about your concerns and your wishes for your cat. Be upfront about what you want their care to look like. There are hospice options for pets. There are things that can be done to allow your pet to be more comfortable and get the most out of their final days/weeks/months where they’re not ready to give up on life, but are obviously no longer living their best life, either.
I feel like my vets want me to spend several thousand dollars a year per cat and if they don't get that, then they communicate with me less. They also want me to take out pet insurance which I think is a racket so they can charge more. I used to always like my vets and I had a good relationship with them. But the old vets who I loved have been replaced with younger vets who expect more money per pet. I have paid for ultrasounds that showed nothing though they tried to tell me that something that I could not see "could" be lymphoma. 5 years later my cat is still alive. Thyroid tests that were negative. Telling me my cat has kidney disease when their labs look normal. Basically I've spent a lot of money when the end result is just that my cat is old at 17 years of age and I already know that. So I take my older 2 cats in once a year for a checkup and senior panel. And other than that, I am going to love my cats until the light goes out of their eyes because it is time for them to cross over. Death is a natural part of any beings life. And to spend thousands of dollars to "maybe" prolong a cat's life I think is ridiculous. I won't be a vet practice's cash cow. I find it offensive.
Oh so I am not the only one who has a problem with paying for the vet's new Porsche. Hmmm

True. Now, there are several programs for seniors to adopt a pet for little money ( about twice a year). But, it is when you need to put a pet down, you have to pay an outrageous fee of $150.00. How did that fee rise from $10 in the 90's to 15 times more?
Rightfully so. I had a siamese, Tigger. I was his 3rd owner. Though I was on a fixed income, I knew once I adopted him, I would make sure he wouldn't ever have to find a 4th owner.
Because Tigger was Siamese, periodontal disease was common. Teeth cleanings were to be regularly done atleast once a year. Cleanings were about $450--if nothing went wrong. If they had to extract a tooth, that would add another $300 to the bill. Talk about sleepless nights!!
I managed to be Tigger's guardian until he died a couple years ago. I refuse anymore sleepless nights and just donate to feline organizations instead of owning a cat, now.
ASPCA in my town say they have been overloaded with stray cats & dogs & it's getting worse for them.
My only asset is a home I own but can't afford to even drive back & forth into the city to be a foster guardian.
We have so many problems in our country today. We need to respect life from humans to animals much more than we do now. We all need homes.

I was at 4, different vets and multiple visits over past few years... I do agree with this but need video of top things vet clinic should do for customers. I've seen staff snap at owners for touching their cat to calm it,. Not listening to the customer when they try to explain symptoms (seems like they dismiss you as if they are either too busy to listen or know better). I've taken my cat into different clinics in various states (I'm a traveling nurse) explaining my cat has ear issues and has for years but never seemed to get accurate diagnosis and once they didn't even look at his ears! I could go on and on. In addition some clinics only give hand written Bill with barely any information regarding findings just meds and costs. Hospitals at least give computer print out with a summary... I like to keep this information for tx history.
Oh I totally am seeing what you're saying, but vets have it hard compared to physicians. Vets cant charge 150k for a surgery like physicians can, and owners do not have the funds to pay for super specialized treatments given our current educational and societal structures. It's also more difficult to be a vet with a low chance of complications because of the difficulty in specializing in many fields given the current educational and structural systems in place (not intelligence of the vet). This is why vets have it hard in our society, and patients have a disconnect. Patients think that our society doesn't have major issues with pet care and dismiss the uphill battles vets have to face every day. The vets try really hard to do what they can, but they face many variables. If someone is go fully empathize with vets, then they need to understand the vets real story.
@@toofy7253 Lots of people have it hard, including very many clients. No excuse to act vile or as if you are above your client... which is how many vets are.
@@ScorpioRising13 but that dismisses the entire system as a whole. I have a view of the entire system. We're relying on vets to be some super heroes to save us. We have to help save them and change the system so that it's a better setting for vet and patient communication. Trust me

Whatever the back story, it does not excuse indifferent/ rude behaviors. When I tell vet that my finances are tight, and they perform a $400. x-ray for minor lacerations, just in case . . . well, there is a conflict-of-interest by big corporate practices. Guess you think drs are calling all the shots on their procedures too. Society is hurting on all but the highest levels. Trust you? Huh??
@@topsham69 Blaming the actual vets is pretty useless and does more hard than good. I have to do other things, but people will be people, and systems shape people. Hope you get it. If not, read it again and again. Thanks. I agree with you on the big corp and such having too much influence. Just no need to isolate vets when people will be people
I agree the veterinarian has to charge enough to cover the business expenses and make a nice living. Most now work for someone else or a corporation. Paying off student loans can take years and opening their own practice with all the equipment is incredibly expensive.
I am 64 and have been taking cats and dogs to the vet for decades. I didn’t use to worry about the bill. Just my baby. Medical advancements for both us and our animals have been wonderful. This is both wonderful but also leads to another sad problem.
I now have one cat with insurance. I lost my best friend recently. She was a happy dog while I was an older woman. She loved me anyway. I would love to find another best friend to take me for walks. I can no longer afford a pet. My darling cat will be my last companion. I cannot afford vet bills. I have met so many seniors in perfect health really in need of some company but can’t afford the vet bills. I volunteered at a rescue until Covid. I have recently fostered a litter of kittens. I have met so many people who would love a pet but it’s out of financial reach. It’s sad. There are animals in shelters and seniors who would love a companion. What is the answer?
Fostering would be a great way to have companionship without needing to commit to vet bills.
My cat was originally a foster. I fostered another litter and my husband fell for another sweetie. I can no longer foster. I fail.

In a country where 10s of millions of ppl live in poverty, it's obvious that the government--it's politicians aren't doing enough to allow it's retired & disabled populace to live comfortably. We need to expand our Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid programs...all social safety net programs need to be expanded so more humans can live with dignity.
Part of that requires respecting all life--including animals!!
Humans NEED animals & vice versa.
I live on a fixed income, alone, no family but my one asset is a home. 4 bedrooms, 1568 sq ft, room easily for 2 cats but I don't adopt at all.
I had a kitty for 14 years and I stayed up at night worrying if he ever got chronically ill, I wouldn't be able to afford the vet bills. Tigger passed but I won't suffer sleepless nights again.
I donate monthly to great feline organizations and I have to live my life without a beloved kitty.
Solutions start when more people organize their local governments to provide & change FOR THEM.
Nothing will get better until large groups of concerned ppl fight for it.
I have always wanted to start a nonprofit helping seniors and companion animals. Now I’m a senior on a very fixed income still wanting to start that nonprofit.
I always known seniors in my community that wanted a cat or dog. When they get older their beloved dog passes away. They don’t know how long they will be healthy or wealthy enough to take on a new fur companion so they don’t. Our lives are so much fuller when we have a cat or dog. Not as lonely, something to love, something that loves you, something to care for.
My nonprofit would be checking in on senior’s daily to walk the dog, take the cat to the vet (nonprofit pays if senior can’t) making sure there is food and the animal is doing well. The visits would also be checking in to make sure both are doing well. If the senior passes away the charity either finds the fur baby another senior home or if that’s not possible a good home or foster.

sorry sarah, but funny you mention anxiety, currently i am giving orbax to my feline as prescribed by my vet. about 20 years ago, a different vet gave me baytril to take home to give my cat. seeing i also had a CRF cat, i was familiar with giving sub-Q fluids. what they didn't tell me is that they messed up and gave me baytril 100 (which is for cattle) instead of the regular baytril. after just 2 doses, it permanently detached her retinas and she was permanently blind. when i contacted the animal hospital all they said was "oops" they didn't even bother to refund me the vet bill which at the time was just over $200. i wrote a letter to the state vet board and not a darn thing happened. in texas you can file a lawsuit but animals are considered property and i'd have to go thru small claims court. and even if i won, i would only get $35, which is what the adoption fee was back then, can you believe that? so yeah, if i feel a little anxious and hesitant about giving my cat the same type of drug that blinded my cat years ago, then the vet should be more understanding of my situation, never mind what i should never do at the clinic.
Sadly, Texas sucks as far as vet discipline and accountability. The media has even done specific stories on this.

I have an arrangement with my bank. They take out $100 per month and deposit it into another account I call my cat account.
I have a Vet who comes to my home. IMO it is a god send for the Vets who do this. Everyone is relaxed, my cat knows her and is not so stressed. Last year I had to take her to the ER, I couldn't even go in with her - that was awful. I was called and given updates and what the cost was going to be for x-ray, blood work, etc. so no surprises there. I just hated that I couldn't be there with my cat. I appreciate your profession and especially when my girls were getting on in age. My Vet and I had those end of life "discussions" and it was more like speaking to a friend about my cat. I think that some people make decisions that are for them, not so much for their pet and their quality of life. All because you can doesn't mean you should. Thank you
Yes!!! I recently had to help my 16 year old boy cross the rainbow bridge.
I shared my fears about my chronically ill senior boi (he kept getting upper respiratory infections) with the vet, was very specific about what I wanted his care to look like (the kind thing/right thing for him - this cat was in his 80s…I wasn’t willing to extend his life for my own comfort), and what I should keep an eye out for so I wouldn’t miss him telling me “I’m done. Please let me go.” She helped me know what to look for.
I also talked to my friend who used to be a vet tech who helped soothe me and give me very real & honest talk about how my cat was getting older, his body wasn’t able to regulate his temperature as well, his body wasn’t able to absorb nutrients from the food as well.
Both played a vital role in helping me give my cat “a good death.” He went out on a “medium” day. He didn’t suffer unnecessarily, he went out when he was ready. I was so grateful to be able to provide that to my buddy who had given me so much love for 15.5 years ❤
I have two rescue cats. One is fine, prod and squeeze him all you like. The other one doesn’t like being picked up too much, nor would I deliberately touch his tummy or indeed do anything he dislikes as he will nip you. This makes me anxious when a vet is doing all of the above and I’m holding my breath! I’ve experienced great vets, genuinely concerned, switched on and caring. Others are abrupt and moody, who seem to be in the wrong profession.
I think pricing should be clearer from the start, perhaps a range chart so customers know what to expect for different services. Vets should always accept a payment plan. People come in with their pets and they feel vulnerable, they will do everything for that pet. Having big chunks of cash in your account on that day is very often not an option and yet you can’t walk away and leave your pet in pain or suffering. Also on regular items like flea treatment don’t put your prices way higher than others, that just comes across as greedy.
In the UK at least, pet insurance is pretty sketchy. It comes with a list of conditions and exemptions, what is and what is not covered as well as large ‘grey areas’ open to interpretation. It isn’t that cheap for cover either, too often your insurer will not pay for the treatment because of some clause or other. Therefore many don’t get it as you end up paying for both the insurance and the treatment as well albeit a small discount if any. I would like a clear and concise pet cover, that’s covers any and all treatment. Sure list excess fees for the expensive things. Do that at a reasonable price, many more people would get pet insurance and the vet fees won’t matter as would be covered.
I have one rescue cat, she roamed wild for about a year (?) until I pulled her inside one cold winter night. My other cat I had since a kitten, she's VERY affectionate, loves to be held, even asks sometimes (!) She's always sweet until she gets in a mood and wants to swat at my hand for whatever reason, with claws out!! Little brat!!! But the formerly wild cat -- never once has even thought of hurting me, never a brat, sleeps by my side . . . but try to pick her up and hold her? Fahgetaboutit! Not happening! I've never known a cat who resisted so much being held.
I think most of us understand that Vet services cost money, but costs have skyrocketed (and quality of service diminished) because of corporate ownership! Companies like VCA and Mars, Inc, are snapping up clinic by the hundreds! Some of these CEOs make $ Millions/years! This a lose/lose situation. More and more clinics are corporate owned and couldn't care less about your pet - and it shows!! They care about money, period!! Tell me, why do x-rays cost > $500, when it's all digital (no development, just instant images)! I hope you do not sell out to corporate interests! We need all of you to be "doctors", not "money grubbers"!!!
My cat behaves really well at the vet, the problem is that he gets really nervous in the car. He tends to pee in his crate during the trip. Generally, that not a big deal, but the other day he needed a urinalysis and needed to arrive at the vet with a full bladder😅. It was a challenge.
I always cover the carrier with a beach towel so they can't see everything moving around them for the car ride. Keeps them much calmer. Also I put two towels inside the carrier just in case they pee on the top one. That way I can remove the soaked towel, put in a bag and they have a nice clean towel for the ride home to cuddle on. Some of them like to snuggle under the towels for the ride because it makes them feel safe.
My cat had to stay overnight for that reason.
I have had vets shame for not allowing everything on the estimate done, when most people don’t do all things on estimates. I am always clam yet have had numerous bad experiences. It’s frustrating when vets judge rescuers and sadly staff judge and will shame you. I have spent an insane amounts of money over the years on my pets. Never ever have I had a vet allow payments.
My advice is to call around beforehand and know where to go for what. When I had my 3 dogs, I went to 3 different vets, for different things. One for shots only. One was for emergency only, like when my beagle had a blockage. They had the cheapest over night charges. And the third was for dental only.
I called around and found best prices ahead of time and then when I needed something done, I knew where to take them!
I agree. I use this approach for anything else. If I’m going somewhere for something specific, I’m calling ahead.
Thanks for those tips about calling around viewers! I found the video less helpful and more judging honestly. Yes, we do carry credit cards but who would accurately guess the cost of a procedure until after the exam? These ideas from viewers really helpful.
I really like this channel BUT this video made me feel a bit sad and angry. I understand that vets have their expenses and their bills to pay but most vets don´t actually care about your pet but only your money! I remember one time when I had only 20€ too less with me at the vet and I asked, would it be possible that I bring it the day after and that I would leave my ID card or passport as deposit at the clinic and then they answered they can´t do and if I´m not able to pay it now, that they would have to keep my cat and give it to a shelter (And that I probably wouldn´t get my cat back then!), thats not how a vet should act! Also, a friends cat was diagnosed with diabetes at the last stadium and they told to my friend that her cat needs to stay 3-5 days at the clinic in intensive care and that it would cost 20.000€ per day....3-5 days would cost 60.000€ -100.000€....and if she can´t pay this, they would have to put her cat to sleep! My friend didn´t have any other choice to let her cat go, cause of course she wasn´t able to pay such an ammount and she didn´t want to let her cat suffer. To me vets are (mostly) only after your money and thats a fact or how can you explain such high prices? The vet knows that pet owners want to help their pets no matter what and the vet use this to get more money than the treatment actually costed! Thats my point of view and my experiences with vets prove this!
I also used to like these videos, I've' never ever left comments, but I was so disgusted, when I opened this video I was thinking I would learn something that could be helpful, however I couldn't have prepared myself for what was being said by this (un)professional veterinary that is sure to make any pet owner have to stop and wonder if they could entrust a Dr. with there most precious pet that seemed to be more concerned with how the petowner will react to the news of what your pets treatment will cost. will feel once you have given a price that it would beand your reaction to being told what your bill will be, then what pay your bill hat your going to do or say something that may upset the vet? What? Doesn't that go with the territory? Helping to console the ones that are worried and needing assistance from the Dr and understand what to expect. This is not about the dr or his staff this is about the pet and the pet owner It's them that you have a responsibility to them. If you and the staff aren't able to handle what comes with caring for a persons love one and a persons money or lack there of, then perhaps some professional help with boundaries would be helpful so you and your staff can help with the stress of there clients rather then add to it. They certainly aren't responsible for the Dr or the staffs mental wellbeing, but this video is sooo wrong to make it as though your speeking up on behalf of all veterinary's, when many would be apauld by this.out set them by not going hey seem to have themselfeluctant to trust that there pet will be given the care needed or just get the money that can get by any means possibly, she says loud and clear that if you haven't prepared for a unforseen accident then listen up, because don't you dare just show up with your hurt pet and ask us to help your pet, especially when you no you don't have the money to pay what were charging for the treatment, and even worst when cared for hoping can do for our pets what we can't do, we want to of your pets health and wellbeing. petcare would always been aware of a vet's need for payment for doing services that can save the life of your pet and without this help you could possibly lose your pet, it's such a scary place to be especially after listening to this vet telling you
ut this video is sooo wrong to hear this vet ask pet owners to first do some research on how much they will need to pay if you expect to get your pet cared for, first off it's not always that simple to no what's wrong, you can't ask your pet what's going on or how bad are you feeling or anything like you would do with a person let alone call around asking how much do you charge for what ales my pet, anyone knows that answer is going to be, you'll have to bring them in, you then say the importance of calling in advance and make it know that your flat broke till payday or whatever, rather then not letting it be known that you can't pay that type of unexpected money at this time because your pet has no right to be given something that it can't afford, and don't think you can beg us to save his life or promise to pay or even try bargaining as is done in every day business transactions, because it's so much pressure on the vet because of there big giant hearts.
Oh please first you'd need to have a heart but selfish and greed is the only thing that stands out here, all you see here is it's not your responsibility to help out those that are at your mercy, to show your love of animals and your dedication to the health and wellness of our pets,
Nope, only want to make as much money as possible without having my staff or myself constantly and needlessly be bothered over and
over by those same types of pet owners looking for a hand out, then getting angry when things don't go there way and voice there anger and frustrations where people may listen and agree.
Is there any other way to look at this video and not see how horrible and selfish this type of behavior is and then saying don't complain to anyone because that just makes the vet feel stressed, take your own advise and just breathe and don't let it show, it will help ease the stress on the petowner there pet and therefore help you the vet feel better. don't have it or to set a good example with so that others may follow your hat comes with your ability to good health what is helping to provide a beloved pet our way through this because it won't work, and just because your pet is going to possibly die and will be in pain until it's death or you come up with the money has you all emotional and distraught, don't let your frustrations or anger be known your sadness while your worst night mare is possibly unfolding before yours eyes because discovered there pet is in need of help that money to bring along with your pet shouldn't come at all,

Her videos are about 20mins each. Who has that kind of time to watch a video that long to learn one tiny thing they’re looking for that they could find in 30 seconds by Googling the question!
My daughter was so awful with fear when she would go to the vet, her dog started biting the vet and staff. They had to muzzle him to do his shots. Her anxiety was so bad that I told her I would take him from then on. When I took him they were going to muzzle him. I said no. Told them that since my daughter wasn't there he would be fine. He was. Not even so much as a flinch.
Don't blame your vet for your pets misfortune. I have a friend that distrusts his vet since his cat passed away in their care. He criticized their bedside manner as well. I can imagine that they treat lots of sick animals and can be seen as rough and uncaring when bathing them. I think they're just going about in a business-like manner. I don't coo over my rescues like a baby. I can't stand baby talk and would not respect my vet.if he "talked" to his patients that way.
I was overcome with emotions when I brought my dead cat to the vet. I couldn't express myself or even describe what had happened. On hind sight, I should've written things down and took photos.

If you have a pet, you're responsible for its healthcare. Older cats with "baggage" seem to find us so we know that their vet bills can be pricey. We've spent over $5000 on our old lady cat for one visit alone. And she did a couple of overnights at a hospital which cost a thousand a night (she was the money girl and had diabetes.) But, our former vet shamed us for our hesitation in getting our boy cat a $1000 MRI. We didn't even know that was a thing for cats (this was several years ago). We wanted to think on it and he didn't like that. But he did call the next day to say that he had a donation account that would pay for half. So we went for it. Massive cancer and he had to be put under. But we switched vets for our future cats because of his manner. Our next vet's prices were higher but their care was much more professional.
I have autism and agoraphobia. I struggle soooo much with leaving the house, let alone my aide and I lugging my sick pet into the office. Emotional regulation and remaining able to communicate are haaard.
My vet hospital is rather large with (about 12 Vets). I have been with them since 2001 and they have gone through alot of transistions some for the worse and some for the better but the first time I walked through the doors my cat was dying and they saved her. So I have a strong emotional attachment. 10 years later they saved her life again and I didnt have the money. The animal charity foundation they also run compassionately paid half the bill! They have been there for her from that day and also to console me when I broke down in tears at her eventual death at age 20. My current cat I actually adopted from the hospital. I try to stay with the same vet there as much as possible because it helps develop a relationship. The downside is I can admittedly get impatient or irritated when I am stuck with a vet I dont know that also makes decisions I believe my regular vet would not go for. But again my 2nd cat spent first 6 months of her life at that hospital before I adopted her so I think we both uniquely have an emotional attachment to the hospital. I think when I bring her there its like visiting her first home for her. So no matter how much I sometimes get anxious or frustrated at the vet, I always remember all they did for my first cat and that this was the 1st home of my current cat. Relationships with your animal and as well with your vet are both priceless.
I pretty much agree with these but most of all with being honest about what you can afford and what you are willing to put your pet through .My senior (12) cat has FIV ,i'm happy to pay for meds to manage any symptoms ,deal with infections and stop pain but I won't go down the surgery or cancer treatment road for him if it comes up .I feel that would be pointless because it would mean the disease has developed to the point where he would be constantly ill ,which is no way for an animal to live .Of course vets want to do everything in their power to help and extend life , but that isn't always what's really best .
If the vets were not so expensive in the USA, other countries are so more reasonable, they charge for labs, more than my own labs. To them it’s all about the money in this country. I know of one specific chemo pills, that cause $200 for 28 days, in Portugal, the same exact pills cost $52000.00 in the USA, 😡perhaps America should care more about the animals, not about making money, it’s terrible what all vets charge.
If there is that big of a difference between prices of meds contact the FDA about approving generics/other manufacturers for the drugs not your vet.

If you have no way to pay for it, they won't treat your pet they just tell you so what go away! Talking don't work in western Oklahoma! None of the vets here care! They want money up front. They just tell you, no financing what so ever! Complete payment up front. Get pet insurance and try to get your vet to accept it. That's my suggestion. $20 a month is better than anything. Does the lady making this video take pet insurance? I hope she does. More vet's need to get on board with insurance for your pet's.

I initially got Care Credit for myself because I needed some dental work done. (and we all know that ain't cheap) Then I found out that my vet takes it too. A few weeks later my cat got dental work done too.

Although I am a very experienced cat parent (have had loving felines for over 70 years), I know enough about my own anxieties, and the fact that my furry lovebug will pick up on them and panic, that I never accompany my geriatric Aby to the vet. Fortunately, I have people willing to be "the badguys" for me. The vet then consults with me by phone (both during the consultation and once the results come in). It is still stressful, but at least I am not adding to my little old guy's stress this way.

Cats pick up in your feelings too so you need to just relax and be confident. Also when I had a rescue kitty HoneyKat be treated for her leg that was severely injured (raw honey skin wraps helped heal her leg) it was a very painful thing to have to change her bandages 2x a week so I would play meditation music and that would help calm her down.

As a relatively new pet owner it’s interesting reading these comments and listening to this video. I remember once having a roommate who was dating a girl who had a dog that twice got into the trash and ate left over cobs from corn on the cobs. They went through two separate surgeries that were well over 5000 dollars over all. I remember hearing they specifically banned cobs in the house and I thought, “why did you go so above and beyond for you dog?” I thought at the time removing food items from the house and going through such expensive surgeries was a huge waste of money and it was probably just better to let nature take it course. Having a cat now tho as I look at her I imagine what I would feel if I were in their shoes and I realize now how hard it is to be in that spot. My gf and I have been discussing Pet insurance due to friends who have talked about how helpful it has been for them over the long term of their pet ownership. Def a lot to consider and it comes down to one’s income, their values and overall how willing they are to take the risks. Hopefully one day these become more reasonable for people to pay and deal with, but if the US human health care system is any indicator, it’s not likely :/

I am very blessed to have 3 amazing vets at my clinic. I've been going there for 21 years and they are familiar me and all my cats. I always treat them and the receptionists with respect. Once you are an established client, they will allow you to put your bill on your account and pay monthly. They are the best and I am extremely blessed. I recently purchased catnip and was just curious. My cats have not yet been given this cat nip.
Hi there! Dr. Sarah isn't able to reply to comments at this time, but I haven't found any evidence that catnip can be harmful, even if used every day. Cats will develop a "resistance" to it for ~20 minutes afterwards, but daily use doesn't seem to be risky at all. Hope this helps.
My cat, Nehemiah, has excellent pet insurance. He was a TNR, trap neuter and release, cat and he adopted me. About a year in he broke his leg outside somehow. It cost 5000 dollars to get fixed with pins and screws. I figured 300 dollars a year was a good deal to cover his medical expenses in the future.

I've seen vets overcharge. It may be a Manhattan thing with Manhattan rents, but $500 for a fixing a male cat is ridiculous and to make matters worse, they were out of cones. You need a cone after that surgery cause cats will lick.
Another vet told me the bill was $1,300 and when I picked up my cat it was $1,800. They insisted the $500 deposit wasn't included in the $1,300 but they were lying, because they told me the total bill would be $1,300. Next time I get it in writing.

I'm an expat American living in India, now, with 3 sibling kittens that were left on the roof of my rented house in October, '22. They were about 6 weeks old then, sick and malnourished. I found local vet and immediately got medical attention for them. The girl was near death and the vet saved her. The cost here in Tamil Nadu State is a fraction of the cost in Western countries, very affordable. I think I've paid about $120 total for all procedures and exams for the three kittens til now.
They are all up to date with vaccines, deworming and exams. The vet would have charged the equivalent of $60 to spay Chimmi (female) and $40 each for the two boys but i took them, instead, to the local, volunteer pet sanctuary set up by an American a decade ago, and gave a donation for the 3 procedures which totalled $30.
My vet doesn't have fancy machines or a proper office, for that matter. Just two shop fronts on a main street. Very different from the West. But all the staff truly care about the animals at Maran Veterinary Practice and we've been blessed by their compassion, knowledge and expertise.

Doesn't matter talking to vets none I know of will do payments!! Veterinary busies are way to costly! There are vets that also give attitudes that you can't afford your bill to take care of your animals. Unlike humans we have insurance for our families but not for animals. When there are emergencies for your animals there is no way vets can tell us ahead of time what all things are going to cost in order to talk about paying. Not all of us have credit cards with thousands of dollars on it. The vets around here DO NOT even look at your animals unless you are going to pay
Why should they provide free service for a pet you choose to own?
Nothing in my response says they should provide free services!! Just the chance to make payments when it becomes thousands. Fortunately I have never had to deal with this kind of situation with any of mine.
Unfortunately the reason why they don't do payment plans is because most people default. It's truly sad and I'm so sorry that others came before you and ruined it. This is why a lot of clinics accept care credit or scratch pay and encourage pet insurance.
From someone who's been actual vet staff as their career. Please don't get upset when we need to take your pet to the back treatment area. With certain pets it's a safety issue, and one of the biggest situations where we get injured. Some pets will act out, and be aggressive with vets and staff. We like to take them out of your sight to keep them calmer, and safer for us to handle. I assure you that's the entire reason. In fact I sometimes wished that we had cc tv into our treatment rooms to put you at ease, but unfortunately that's very expensive, thus making your bill more expensive.
Another thing that was a big issue at my favorite clinic (it really was my unicorn clinic) I worked at was when someone other than the primary caregiver needed to bring the pet in, or there was a language barrier (usually with foreign labor like house keepers and gardeners.) A lot times they're told to bring the pet in, and they don't know why. A SHORT note or a conversation with the receptionists when the appointment is made is VERY helpful.
Circling back to the financial issue, ask if they're running any specials. My unicorn clinic had what we called dental month, neuter month, bloodwork month, and my favorite....vaccine month. We usually gave substantial discounts, and neuter month was just the support costs, ie: staff, meds, anesthesia, and any other consumable supplies. We considered it a public outreach to control pet over population. Just ask. You might luck out.
And if you really want to make your vet staff's day. Bring them a treat. We LOVE owners who shower us with appreciation. I do it regularly to pay it forward since I'm retired. In fact I try to do this with with my regular Drs too. They get down too, and they love acts of appreciation.
Maybe start treating both pet and pet parent at the same time!

I have a great vet I've been going to since the 70s. Owners have changed but they are still great, and they know me and my dogs and cats. The one thing I need to work on is feeling like I'm a "bad parent". One of my Poms had an infection on her side and I didn't even know it because her fur is so thick. I kept saying I didn't know it was there!! But they were great, so I'm lucky that way. They know I'm a good parent to my babies. I'm working on it!!

Coming from a cat rescue background, and biomedical profession, I think it is VERY important for vets to offer tiered treatment options. Newly graduated vets are trained to advise the most advanced 'gold standard' treatments that are often out of reach for ordinary people. Whereas more experienced vets, more willing to treat empirically when appropriate, are a godsend to most owners. My thoughts may be skewed due to my background though, most people may be confused or even angry when presented options they can't evaluate.
CareCredit is wonderful and widely accepted. Before deciding to own a pet, PLEASE know that a pet is an expense. Unexpected illnesses WILL happen. Have a plan in advance for annual checkup expenses and unplanned illnesses! Pets are not cheap. But they are worth every penny!
I got turned down for care credit, I have a 740 credit score, but I am low income social security. I did find pet insurance on the Google for $19.99 month. Just have to find a vet to take it. Usually you have to pay up front and seek reimbursement.

I've definitely messed up on the first one for sure. I had to take my cat to the emergency vet for the first time and I cried when I got there I was so scared :(
Same. I sobbed having to take mine in when he was refusing to eat and drink (also not using the litter box). I had just lost my mom (she was quite young) two years prior from a battle with cancer, and that's all I could think about when it came to my beloved Percy being sick. Turns out, he just had a large hairball that was struggling to pass, causing him all sorts of funky symptoms. It took two visits to resolve, one to the ER and another to the regular vet, but in the end he was okay. I cried at the second appointment too, when the vet said she wanted to show me something on his x-ray. It was the lump of fur hung just outside his stomach, but my mind kept going back to it being a cancerous mass of some sort. Thankfully, the vet was incredibly compassionate, and even allowed me to spill my heart out for a few minutes (as to why I was so anxious about my sick kitty). Her eyes welled up with tears as she listened, and then proceeded to reassure me. I cannot tell you just how much that meant. I don't even know if she still works at that office, but I will never forget that moment of kindness (and after hours at that)!
I say all this to say that as much as we'd like to stay free of negative emotion when it comes to the vet, that's often not entirely possible. Showing emotion reflects the love that you have for your animal. Not only that, but animals can sense fake "happy". If you're putting on an act of positivity but still have the underlying emotions, your pet won't be fooled. I do try to calm myself as best as possible for vet visits, but I've somewhat accepted that I'll never be bubbly walking into the vet. It is what it is, honestly. If we could only speak words back and forth with our pets. That would surely help a lot. I just need him to know that he's okay and that I will be bringing him right back home to his safe place when it's all over 🥰

Don't be embarrassed about financial limitations? My local vet clinic I have to go to has a sign says payment *is* expected up front and do not ask for credit as it embarrasses everyone :( Needless to say, I'm very thankful I haven't needed to take my cat for a while.

I have worked in cat rescue and have come across so many awesome DVM's and their staff who give and give and give. people who work in this line of work are not doing it for the money, lol trust me. if you're going to get a pet please know that they need to be paid for their work to care for your pet and it's going to cost money. Pet insurance can go a long way if you get in a situation where you will really need it to help with paying for care. At the end of the day, most people who went to school for a long time to be able to practice medicine have some sort of debt and they also have to run a business and pay staff etc. don't expect them to work for free. most of them have or are already volunteering a lot of themselves to help animals in need.
Idk if you'll ever see this, but what do you think as a vet would be a good solution for the cost issue? I see a lot of people in the comments talking about how so many animals aren't adopted because of vet expense or even in general. And for many on fixed incomes insurance only works a little because usually you have to have enough for upfront cost to be reimbursed which can take time etc which can mess some people up. My thinking is maybe if pet insurance worked more like human insurance where it has more upfront coverage and maybe a small copay etc? I'm unsure what a good work around would be for vets that works for disabled/retired people or those who've hit hard times. I want to research what works for all parties involved so animals get the care they need and can also help get animals out of shelters or off streets into homes 💖

I go into parent mode. Scared, somewhat but keep myself in total control because I am my cat's one & only advocate & need to ask the proper questions and drive home safely & in control.

I'm usually pretty calm during a vet visit, we, the vet tech and I, have to dump the cat out of the carrier. Our last cat had a soft side carrier with mesh on either end, the vet techs gave him his shots through the mesh instead of taking him out. I was ok with that, but he never was "seen" by anybody.

I had my sick dog at the vet the other day. Not going to lie, I had a little ptsd because it was the same vet who neglected to do X-rays on my other dog, I took her back the next week and she had bone cancer- this is the same pet who also put her down (3 years ago). Also, vets offices pricing can be crazy expensive for one office and a different vets office could be $100.00’s of dollars less.

I'll also add that vets aren't subsidized by the government or any charities. This means we HAVE to pass on those expenses to keep our doors open.
We also have to take inflation into account. Our prices go up because it's costing us more to stay open. Believe me, we don't like doing it as much as you do.

Some places fleece pet parents over charging. I agree that Vets are professional pet doctors and are worth being compensated to keep the lights on and make a good living (as everyone wants the same), but some do go overboard. If some of the well needed services were reasonably priced (like spaying) more would bring their pets in and get it done. There are some shelters and places like Petsmart that are offering that service at much more reasonable pricing so that pet parents will get that done so there are not more animals in foster care or shelters.

Veterinarian here. I guarantee you that the places that are cheap are the ones fleecing pet owners. Good medicine is expensive. Pretending to do medicine while not doing anything useful for the patient is cheap. No business or even shelter does work without profit. If a place is 'cheap' the profit comes from not providing any care to the patient.
TL;DR: The cheaper a vet clinic, then less value it provides, and going there will still cost you money WITHOUT any benefit while going to an expensive vet clinic will cost you money and provide SIGNIFICANT benefit. Those are your choices, not cheap care vs expensive care.

Possible professional bias here? You've probably taken your beloved pets to a wide variety of vet clinics in all price ranges. So you know first-hand as a client, rather than treating your pets in-house. Sometimes there are simple needs that don't require "expensive care". I'm a pretty anxious pet owner when they're sick and/or dying, but Dr. Wooten is making ME anxious. Wow, maybe she should take a break. Old school veterinarians are best. Nowadays this is, as she said herself, a profit making endeavor. Very little time in this video talking about the practice of caring for animals. Pet owners: don't have feelings or cry, ask too many questions, and you better have a large amount of money.

I agree that you shouldn't do any of these 5 things at the vet, but I disagree that clinics are priced appropriately. Maybe some veterinarian owners are pricing appropriately, but there are many clinics that are owned by someone who isn't even a veterinarian and they are very overpriced.
I don't care to shop around for a vet; I use the one that is a block from my home, and I don't complain. However, how is it possible that I just paid $321.75 just for routine blood work through Antech (not even in-house)? That doesn't include the office visit fee. Why does my clinic charge $60 for just a fecal floatation? Why did I pay $469 for a dental cleaning?
My vet clinic is not priced appropriately. They are overpriced. There are at least 4 veterinarians who work there, and not one of them owns the place. The people charging the prices do not work in the clinic.
Veterinarian prices are not usually published on their website. They do not want you to know the price. They don't want you to be able to easily compare pricing across other clinics.
There is a big flashing ⚠️ on my cat’s record on the system at the vets. I have noticed that when the vet is fearful, my cat is even more aggressive. But when they vet who doesn’t believe that any cat is inherently violent is treating her, my cat responds well.
Add to that, my cat doesn’t like females. She is putty in the hands of male vets.

The women who work at the front comment -was geared towards those who usually work at the front desk- which is true of most offices. I honestly can't see how anyone could construe anything you said as condescending. You are so thoughtful and caring in your delivery of such crucial information. I could just imagine what you've seen and experienced in your line of work. It takes a special person to have patience when helping panicked pet parents.
Side note, some vets also have a list of other vets and specialists who are listed with the state as a charity that provides low to no cost services. They commonly work with shelters, rescuers who trap/release and fosters.
This is very helpful. Thank you. People who yell at receptionists or try to price shame veterinarians should probably not have pets in the first place.
The last time I took my cat to the vet.....they weren't so good at drawing blood, a mess, took too much time. She didn't have a helper....asked me to help. I fainted.

Mine hates vet trips; only time he leaves the house; stuffed in a box, taken for a car ride...
This vet needs to be aware that her manner of speaking, her tone, the pattern of stressing her words, is very likely to trigger anxiety in many people.

While my comment isn't going to be popular with veterinary Drs. Or the staff but I am totally blown away with the content of this video, while it's understandable that anyone with a business to run would perfer to collect as much money as possible from there customers without any kind of a complaint or objection least of all the means of paying for what services would be given if the person had the means to afford such services needed.
1.) First off I'm really embarrassed for you at the same time completely appalled that your here asking pet parents to not first and foremost do whatever you can to help any living creature that needs the help that otherwise will be in such pain that will then result in death let alone that same thing of there own pet that may be there best friend or only friend that is now asking for them to help them.
It's true that the first thing that is going to determine weather or not this animal is going to be treated and perhaps get to live is if someone pays whatever the vet determines will be needed, this video is asking people to not to be nervous, anxious or feel badly or embarrassed about the fact that your ability to pay whatever it is asked to save your pets life is not something they can do and will be now shamed for not preparing for this and now having to prepare to be told that without such amount of cash your creature/loveone is going to be needed to be put down or suffer till it's inevitable death.
This happens more often then not to the many pet owners that are the poorest, oldest and the sickest of any community, these people are without a doubt the people that are closest to there pets then any other groups of people because they have nothing and nobody else and spend every moment with there only reason to even live.
While this may not be the position of everyone and there pet, but for so many it's hard enough to even pay for the daily petfood and pet care that is required just to have a couple of pets.
I get it, it's a business that requires money like all business do, but how dare you to think that your business is so special an we need to push aside our worst fears and anxious behavior do to having to no control on what you already no is about to be. So how about you do what your asking of us and what your making the big bucks to do and not to forget chose to be in this field of work. So I think it's you that needs to suck it up and get used to seeing your clients parents in great distress extremely nervous, fearing for there helpless little buddies life! It's all real and something nobody should be told they must do so the dr and staff can do there job easier and not have to see or hear or experience what we the pet owners are going through.
Commend every petowner that doesn't punch the Dr in the nose when they are told sorry no money no help for your pet, and then you have the balls to tell us to don't let us think you have the cash to pay for what we're going to do to save your babies life, and then not have the cash to pay us, because we wouldn't have done it if you told us you were broke! Again I commend anyone that's willing to do whatever they can to get there pet the help that's going to save them, you no the pet would do the same for you if need be. So if you really think anyone that brings you there love of there life for help from you is concerned about the correct edict according to you then like I said at the beginning, I'm just plain embarrassed for you, we bring them to you for the only reason and that's because we have absolutely no other choice, it's not like other business where we can go somewhere else or go without, your business is what I would a monopoly type of business wouldn't say! That's the truth and the prices and treatment given or not given are the proof.
I'm not saying that all Vet's fall in this category by any means, but for the ones that are so hardened to the feelings of other's or never had any feelings when they started the type that now won't return a pet to there owners until they have received full payment of services provided plus such a price per day for daily care if this is not received buy such date as stated then I regret to inform you that we will be forced to euthanize your pet for failure of payment, I kid you not, I paid for a friend that called me in tears begging to borrow money to save her dogs life, I didn't believe what she was telling me till I talked to the vet for myself, I was told how badly they felt that they had been forced to use such extremes as this but were tired of not getting paid!
OMG! I co couldn't believe what I was hearing, who hasn't been tired of not being paid when they were supposed to? But to actually Force someone to pay when they don't have the ability to or kill their pet comes to mind, and this coming from a veterinarian one that's supposed to care for your pets not kill them, in fact euthanizing one's pet would actually be one more expense rather than giving the pet back to its owner I can't even begin to imagine what they were doing. On top of that we were actually expected to understand their position as though they were being victimized holy tamale. I had no intentions on telling that story or to get as angry as I did and am at this time I have pets I love them and have a difficult time feeding them as well as the stray pets I feel responsible for making sure they have food while trying to find homes for them, nobody's told me to or asked me to and I don't expect anybody else to but I cannot watch them starve look at them in their sweet eyes and deny them water and food I don't have the answer but there's sucks so excuse me if I don't feel for the veterinarians of the world that feel as though we should try harder to not be scared embarrassed mortified at what we will be having to do when we walk into your doors save it for someone else for god sakes so many other businesses deserve some understanding but yours is a freaking joke understand your position and the people walking in your front door the second they walk in it's downhill from there unless of course you do something for their cat and don't charge nobody expects that it certainly would be nice good luck lady!
This really hits home for me. When I was much younger and had no steady income my cat, who was really all i had in this world got sick and I took him to the vet. They agreed to see him even though i told them I could not pay all at once. He died while at the vet and they refused to give him back to me until I paid the bill. They held the body of my best friend hostage. I friend of mine paid the bill so we could give him a proper burial. It was one of the most painful things that has ever happened to me. It was not enough that he died and I never got to say goodbye but they held his body hostage for 90 fucking dollars.
@@kaleya3d484 It's so difficult for me to hear something as painful as losing your best friend that for a few of us it's more painful then we can began to express in words, its completely unbearable, butter when they said no money no pet to you, I'd have to dare them to try and stop you from getting your pet and walking out that door, they don't have any ownership whatsoever, ask if they would like to bring you your pet or would they prefer you to retrieve it yourself, still having problems hearing me? I'd suggest they do as you say or maybe they need to hear it from the cops I'm calling to report that your pet has been stolen and unless I give him money he won't release him. That's actually a serious crime it's called extortion, so many other laws are being broken by there threat, in possession of stolen property, knowingly!
Unless they have some thing saying you give up ownership then they in fact should be sued up the butt for what they did to you, talk about pain and suffering whee justion!on as I get full payment I'll release your pet to you as your bills paid, as though you gave up ownership when you allowed a vet to do some services to your pet has give shows the it's to late I promise you that they will otherwise see what happens when you try that stunt on the wrong person that's already in such a fragile state of mind that even hearing that your holding there pet as collateral, dead or alive will begging you to except there apologies angry as I feel about the pain that's forever going to be in you, nothing can change this but I still feel that state of mind in the first place, you've gotta be a special kind of stupid to mess with a persons best friend would be at the least have a lasting effect that they will alway have as a reminder that we all have a ugly side should always remember were hoping to teach n need of a angry as I'm feeling about this write now I believe It's high time someone shares the feeling's of hurt they obviously don't remember what it feels like could have found enjoyment coming up with creative lessons or them to learn as ugly as them and give them something to remember when they start thinking about punishing somebody that's already suffering o set an example
@@desireecoleman611 I was 17 I was alone I had no one to turn to. The friend who paid the ransom for me was also 17. I didn't know what to do. If it happened now, as an adult you can bet that I never would have stood down and let them get away with it.
One of my cats (who was homeless for his first year) does experience anxiety when placed in a crate to go to the Dr. I started giving him just a little sprinkling of gabapentin in some broth via syringe before we go. It really seems to help.

Donna I agree with Michelle's reply and also you can try to cover the carrier with a beach towel so they can't see everything moving around them for the car ride. Keeps them much calmer. Also I put two towels inside the carrier just in case they pee on the top one. That way I can remove the soaked towel, put in a bag and they have a nice clean towel for the ride home to cuddle on. Some of them like to snuggle under the towels for the ride because it makes them feel safe.

I have two cats. The male cat looooves his vet! We joke that he flirts for her and she has a hard time listening to his heart because he won't stop purring. On the way there, he's anxious, meowing the entire time. When she walks in, he's sweet as can be and calm and relaxed on the way home. My female cat is the exact opposite. She tries to hide when we're at the vet. I do my best to keep her calm but I'm usually not very successful. The vet treats and talks to her exactly the same as my other cat, but she won't relax. But, luckily, she's the kind of cat that will just freeze when being handled by the vet; she's never tried to bite or scratch. And it's much easier for the vet to listen to her heart because she does NOT purr for the vet. Lol!

Yelling to me is raising a very loud voice saying something rude.
I started in vet med as a receptionist. This was the main reason I worked hard, went back to school and was able to take a tech position. I loved animals, but couldn't stand a lot of their owners when they turned into Karens and Chads.

I have found your videos informative but am extremely disappointed that a lot of the recommendations are related to the owner self-managing their emotional state ... often times, people are coming into the vet knowing their pet is extremely ill and are extremely stressed out about whether to euthanize or keep trying treatments. Being civil and polite to the vet and the practice staff is a given, but anything above that is not to be expected and comes off quite condescending IMO. Also, while I appreciate that no vets should be shamed for their prices, as they have student loans and overhead, that section came off as insensitive to the fact that most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. If they cannot afford their own medical bills, especially in times of economic turmoil, they certainly cannot afford a MRI. Pet insurance, Care Credit, and working out payment plans are good options, but I must say I was turned off by the insensitivity. My neighborhood vet keeps low overhead so that he can work out payment plans with folks who have fallen on hard times but have previously been timely payers of their bill. There is a way to make a decent salary, pay off loans, and provide excellent care without selling out to corporate and having skyrocketing prices.

Another no-no: bringing your cat just in your arms! They may be perfectly relaxed like that when you are at home. But at the vet's there are all sorts of scary sounds (like dogs barking and other cats yowling), strange smells, and the fear signals coming off of other pets and other owners. You do not want to have to chase after a scared cat who is on top of cabinets and expensive equipment or cornered just out of reach under a heavy cabinet. Believe me: You and the vets do not want to have to deal with a panicked cat on the loose! Absolute chaos can also ensue when the other pets and owners pick up on the contagious panic.
