I am an Ashkenazi Jew whose grandparents fled the pogroms of Russian Cossacks to settle in NYC. I love Palestinian food and am learning the recipes in Sami Tamimi's great cookbook, FALASTIN. This Musakhan Fatteh looks wonderful and would make a lovely holiday dish. Sumac is one of my favorite spices; I often use it on salads and In sandwiches like Avocado Toast. The nut and pomegranate topping, sprinkled over tahini yogurt (which I'm familiar with) and that green chili sauce (which I'm not very familiar with) looks so festive! If I wanted to make it vegetarian, what if I used mushrooms and eggplant (my favorite vegetable) instead of the chicken? If so, do you have any suggestions as to what kind of mushrooms? I married my beautiful Palestinian husband and lived with him and his family in Jordan for two years before we moved to Netherlands for his job. During this time, I had the privilege of being taught traditional Palestinian cooking by my 76 year old mother in law and many sister-in-laws, including this delicious dish. Cooking and food is such a beautiful and major part of the culture. It’s not a quick, convenient means to an end like in the west. All of us women would get together in the kitchen, mostly on the floor (covered in a plastic sheet) and prepare every ingredient by hand before even getting to the actual cooking, even small things like milling our own pepper, pickling fresh olives, making our own tomato sauce by squeezing and mashing tomatoes by hand etc . We would sit together for hours in stations, each with our own task, talking, sharing, laughing and reciting Qu’ran. Then sitting down with the whole family to eat (his siblings and their families lived in the same street) almost every single night. Moving back to a western country after two years was honestly incredibly difficult to adjust. Insha’allah I will go with my husband and his family back to Fallastine when she is free 🇵🇸❤️❤️

As always, thank you so much for your continued support of the Palestinian people! Seeing it definitely warms my heart a bit. Many more should do the same.
Thank you. You solved a big problem for me. I've been trying to figure out a way to introduce the concept of Fatteh (pitta) bowls and this is exactly how I'll do it now.
This dish looks absolutely gorgeous. Thank you so for boosting the plight of the Palestinian people in this heart rending time. To get personal, I'm a diasporic US Jew. I staunchly support and side with the Palestinian people, both as a human being with a conscience who refuses to take propaganda uncritically, and indeed *because* I'm a Jew. Our tradition strongly emphasizes the importance of justice, fairness, and "repairing the world." That our ancient yearning for being truly safe and love for our ancient history has been twisted by people enacting colonialism, murder and rape, and serving as mercenaries for the cruel imperial interests of western powers sickens me to the core. It's from learning our history of being killed and exiled and robbed that I vehemently oppose that same oppression visited on anybody else, ever. People who share my religion and my tribe do not get some special exception. Despite strife and separation, the sons of Abraham were brothers. One day, G-d willing, let B'nei Yitzakh and Banu Ismail truly be siblings again.
Thank you! I've seen the vile hate thrown at some Jewish people for thinking the same thing, and I hope you are doing ok despite it. One day we will be able to live together in peace and dignity
I've made this twice from a recipe in Palestine on a Plate by Joudie Kalla - with vegan chicken. It's so good and surprising! My heart breaks for Palestinians and the olive trees.
Musakhan is really similar to a historic English recipe I make all the time! Really fun to see how different cultures make something so similar and yet so unique. Def going to be adding sumac to my white chicken pottage
Brilliant new version of Msakhan❤ since its not the original recipe, i recommend you add a pomegranate molasses into the chicken marinade or even for a decoration as the colors should be wink wink 😉
that looks delicious, it’s a shame i can’t have most of that because of dietary restrictions, but it looks like i should be able to have sumac so it would be fun to try to make something inspired by it using foods i can eat
thankyou I recently purchased sumac because of many dishes that recommend this spice, i followed your recipe it turned out good👌though i love olive oil but i used very little oil to make it less calorie dense , i am sure with the amount of olive oil that u used it must be phenomenal, just wondering if sumac has so much red pigment or there is a chance that it is adulterated with red food color??

Then sitting down with the whole family to eat (his siblings and their families lived in the same street) almost every single night. Moving back to a western country after two years was honestly incredibly difficult to adjust. Insha’allah I will go with my husband and his family back to Fallastine when she is free 🇵🇸❤️❤️
A Beautiful dish from a beautiful people. Going to make this soon as my Sumac arrives in the post.
Awesome! Check out our sumac video if you want more ideas for how to use it!
Made this once already and making it again tonight, my whole family LOVES it
I’m so glad to be subscribed to this channel. I found you recently as I love Middle Eastern cuisine, so the tragedies happening right now need to be talked about if we wish to enjoy their culture. I don’t think anyone can love someone’s food without supporting who they are. Excellent recipe and I appreciate the site info! Peace to everyone. 🙏❤️
This is just perfect for my husband who is half Egyptian & half Palestinian.
Every time you drop a video, I change my mind about what I want to eat that day and I instantly want what you made! I’m gonna make this too ❤ thank you for all the work you do! Palestinian cuisine is feast for the senses and rich in flavor ❤
Haha sorry!
Well done, Middle Eats! The dream of freedom is best enjoyed with great food!
@koreyb - the only racism is that which you yourself bring.
Hopefully not all their land will be taken. 🙏
awesome recipe chef , please show Arabic Areeka and Yemeni masoob recipe please
Thank you for keeping Arabic/Middle Eastern and Palestinian rituals active and well documented on the Internet for the millions of middle eastern born thereafter
Just what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing recipes and helping us to learn about the people!
Freedom for Palestine and food for the hungry.
Sometimes the algorithm failure is just too good to be true LOL. Just stumbled upon this video. Free Palestine ya rabb 🤲
Made this today.. it tasted glorious. Thanks for this amazing recipe. Ceasefire now!
Mmmmm...fatteh, the nachos of the Middle East lol. LOVE this! I also love that nothing in it requires marination/a lot of forethought, so I can bust this out in a few for dinner tonight.
@@MiddleEats I feel as though a celebrity has responded to my post! Love your channel. Keep up the great work!
Respect for standing up for real victims.
We are now in the "Find Out" phase.
This is so great, support for Palestine.
Thank you for always supporting Palestine. The need our support more than ever.
Your content is always top notch.
But extra love for the humanitarian support for Palestine
great idea with the fundraiser through a dinner with friends! will definitely do that soon!
Thank you for this recipe I can’t wait to try it 🇵🇸 ❤
I hope people watch this and gain more reason to keep the Palestinians alive and keep their culture thriving. Don't let a whole group of people die.
That is not happening.
Love your videos and recipes; I appreciate your solidarity and support for the Palestinian people and those suffering in Gaza
Stand up to racism. Free Palestine!
Thanks, friend.
I'm like not doing so well and I think some cooking will get my spirits up!
Sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better, and if you're up for it, I think you'll enjoy the flavours.
Nice recipe. I just love how people are using their platforms in innovative ways to encourage tolerance and encourage historical understanding
I've made this twice from a recipe in Palestine on a Plate by Joudie Kalla - with vegan chicken. It's so good and surprising! My heart breaks for Palestinians and the olive trees.
Commenting to boost the algorithm . Long live Palestine
Just made it. Excellent dish!
suuuper and masha Allah
Reminds of a dish we call Papdi chat in India 🇮🇳. Cook for Palestine 🇵🇸 is great. End war end colonialism.
Musakhan is really similar to a historic English recipe I make all the time! Really fun to see how different cultures make something so similar and yet so unique. Def going to be adding sumac to my white chicken pottage
Been watching you for a while.
I have to say watching you support Palestine so vocally really warms my heart. 🆓🍉
Thank you for using your platform for this. I am a jew and my heart breaks for the Palestinians. Palestine belongs to the Palestinians. ❤🇵🇸
Thank you for your support for humanity. Peace to you
This is very important. We need to keep centering Palestinians are people. Just regular people
Brilliant new version of Msakhan❤ since its not the original recipe, i recommend you add a pomegranate molasses into the chicken marinade or even for a decoration as the colors should be wink wink 😉
Love your channel and videos!
Thank you for your efforts, Obie. From the river to the sea ♥
@@koreyb It's really not.
that looks delicious, it’s a shame i can’t have most of that because of dietary restrictions, but it looks like i should be able to have sumac so it would be fun to try to make something inspired by it using foods i can eat
Middle Eats. what a great name for a channel :) 🍉
i always respected this channel for showing another side to palestine and also staying apolitical.
I can imagine this onion-sumac base on a focaccia-type bread! Would be amazing!
Obi that looks amazing 😍 you and Salma’s good heart shines through your talent in recipes
So middle eastern nachos? I’m here for it!
thankyou I recently purchased sumac because of many dishes that recommend this spice, i followed your recipe it turned out good👌though i love olive oil but i used very little oil to make it less calorie dense , i am sure with the amount of olive oil that u used it must be phenomenal, just wondering if sumac has so much red pigment or there is a chance that it is adulterated with red food color??
Thank you for this
Your receipe is so delicious my cat just meowed really hard at your video.
This looks so gooooood!
God I love this channel so much.
Thank you for this video. Free Palestine
Thank you for speaking for Palestine.
