- A breakdown of the bike I will be using for the Swift Campout - which will be a shakedown ride for our bike-camping trip in Michigan next week. The bike is a Gunnar Rocktour 2 Adventure running ten speed Shimano and Swift Industries bags. Bars are Velo Orange Granola Bars and the rest of the details are all in the video!

In response to your crankset/chainring confusion, I feel the same way. I've been trying to convert an older XC bike to singlespeed and brought it down to my local shop and my buddies were just like we'll do this and that and you'll be fine! Crank/chainring standards are just so convoluted. This gunnar is probably my favorite bike of yours!
Yes - there are just certain things that I don't mess with enough to waste the brain space on the knowledge. If it isn't repetitive I'm going to forget it anyways.
I['m really enjoying the Gunnar too - its a bit more specialized so I will continue to ride my gravel bike but I'm still really glad to have built it up.

I had to rig my panniers in a similar way too because the tension hooks would slide on the rack. I took a stack of 3 pennies and electrical taped it on the rack, I like your zip tie idea so will probably do that if the pennies ever fail.
So entirely utilitarian... love it! And yep went riding in my Vans today!

I'm always worried about panniers shaking loose on single track and rougher gravel. Let us know how that works out.
There is no such thing as too many gears. 😎
Swift calls these "gravel panniers" so there is an expectation they can handle some rough stuff. I was looking at some other brands like Ortleib - they actually lock into place so probably the best best for truly gnarly stuff.
I had no problems on the little sections we hit last weekend - but the real test is next week.
build and setup look super sick! if u don't end up needing the front rack platform for the panniers, a wald 137/139 basket like on the Team Marin might be cool? #basketpacking

I did end up really enjoying the handling of the panniers - its going to be mostly about whether they get in the way and stay put on the trails.

Same - there isn't much out there. This color is Sterling Silver - wouldn't have been my first choice but Otis loves it. I have a friend who just got one a couple months ago in a metallic blue and its stunning.

Imho, that bike is crying out to bin the trigger shifters and replace with MicroShift thumbies, bonus is you get friction for the FD - perfect trimming with every shift.
I run friction 42-16 on the front, same 16T gap as you, and a Sram derailleur, and shifting up and down is flawless..

I use friction on my bikes with flat bar controls and triples for the FD. I have plenty of friction bike but this is working fine with the indexing - not having any issues with the trim.
Just having to ease up when going from big to small chain ring isn't enough to make me switch things out - I really like the way the controls sit on these bars. (I think this is a reasonably old SRAM FD)
Love this setup, Tim! I am also a fan of the Zeitgest bag and use mine all around and for bike packing. However I use the Carradice seat-clamped rack so it's easy to take off and put back on. Also a bit of stability. Is there a reason you didnt opt for a rack for the rear bag? I would think it would wiggle around a ton.
I bought one of those for Erin and she uses it because her bag will hit the tire in her smaller bike without it.
I’ve got mine pretty dialed and just don’t really have a problem with it swinging around much. I just secure it tightly - even rode over rough trails in CT last year and it was still fine.
I have the VO Granola as well. And the Soma Fabrications Portmann. I find the latter better, wider flat side than the Granola.
Those are cool for sure. I'm intrigued by the Oxfords too - I wouldn't mind a bit of rise. Going to run these for a bit and then maybe switch it up.
@@TimFitzwater Yes, the Soma Port Mann has only a very slight rise. The Oxfords look interesting. The one I had been waiting for is Ron's Otho Bar, but seems perennially unavailable at Crust.

Hey Tim how would you describe the Granola bar on the descent?
On the rough & steep stuff I finds myself using the sweeps and pushing myself back off the saddle - a really great position. On the road I will use the bends in the front to get more aero.
So I'm not minding them at all. Have a couple long days on the road coming up - will see if I miss drops then.

Yeah - I think that is why most people use them as tool kegs and not another water bottle holder!

Keep in mind I mostly do full retard farty loaded touring when it comes to baggage. But I do lug stuff a lot on errands . Some axioms still apply with front wheel handling. I never put water on the front wheel, high or low. It sloshes, and fucks up the front vibe. But.... I'll do it if I'm close to camp, at day's end. Many times, the "dinner/breakfast" water is a Poland Spring jug, slung on to the back. With a road salvaged bungee. For local "gravel" and errands, I am in madly in love with GOOD *seatpost* rear racks now. 10 bucks at the junk Co-op . Taiwan - Tech that came and went . I just lugged two incredibly heavy Trail Creek Gaspipe STEEL redneck foldy chairs on it for 3 miles and survived . They were way heavy. Very little oscillation. Motor Drivers were like "WTF? Look at this freak!" These seatpost racks are NOT feeble! Even though they look like it. I'm not talking Bell from Walmart. If you have Tubus anything, I kiss your ring, Oh, Great Velo Master. Yes, I know you're gonna keep your current rig and not experiment . That costs more time and money. Most likely , that "worn out spring " in your FD was simply a cable tension/ stop screw issue. Send me the old one. At least it isn't a wireless SRAM. (hyuk!) Elon Musk has now bought the rights to all that. Be safe, Be sustainable!
It’s interesting how I’ve found different bike handle so differently depending on where the weight is. This one crushed it with weight on the front.
The bike mechanics who built it inspected and changed the FD - definitely not cable tension.
I didn’t pay for the Tubus or FD though so no complaints!
@@TimFitzwater sidenote/off topic. Some ingenious techno geek just invented the world's best Phone/camera/USB/USM mini cable . With awesome shielding , woven housing , and cool little swivels so you won't wear the ends out . This could change your life . I forget the name though, starts with an "S". , I think. I'm sure they're like 40.00 .
@@TimFitzwater IMO, frame and fork design, rider weight, wind, speed , moon phase , and barometric pressure, etc. will all affect the rider's head- space depending on terrain, intensity, and rider- vocal projection. Jan Heine has already noted all this. We all get it, yep. This does get amped up, a notch, however, on gov't designated dirt trails. Especially in Canada. My fork is a Surly , so I think the issue really is the feeble alloy bendiness of the crappy old Blackburn . So, I will happily ride over there for a free Tubus and some chips and IPA. Onward.
