Speaking about the new of ID MetroCard and even from phones credit cell phones and smartwatch but what about disability of people handicap what's going to happen for them anyway that they already put money in the MetroCard of the ID MetroCard that pictures names and numbers bet you that you never see this one coming and what about of a brand-new of a MetroCard that this one we're never going to get expire. Something is for a new Revolution eyes that are white candy and ta-ku go to the company of Japan where there they have so many of different type of ID cards and people could use it and disability a MetroCard attic we're never going it's expired and even if they lost it Dad to call the company of the number and to get a brand new one but however one stead of if they lost the MetroCard and at that got it other set s MetroCard is 4 / you lost it in a third one right there BB like how to say emergency backup and then after that well one MetroCard is already dismissed and expired the other one is transferred to the new Metrocard and then after that only have numbers and even the names of types of different names or numbers safe and secure
And finally a brand-new app Google Play Apple Stores and other different apps that could use it over transferred the world to take a picture that are for the brand new ID and then they lost it and then after that there that get a transfer to the new ID card take a picture on it and will be very fast and then the Lost ID card is going to be expired does it work and no one can I use it for the brand new ID card the lost it and take care of receive over brand new of a ID card for the MetroCard and then after that where the customers and many other people will be happy from New Yorkers and to everyone and specially speaking that MetroCard I hope I die. They could get one of those cover MetroCard but with the protector of the the MetroCard brand new ones and then for every different weathers band in the order that and then there would be happy that customer and even that this cover over to protect of the brand new MetroCard that is going to be like tapping it could be very possible anyway because I got so many idea that the tell you something about it and sometime that the video what I just saw it it's fine but sometime the video it missing something

It's have to SAVE MetroCard, because:
      1. It is a single paying connecter betweem Subway and PATH.
      2. How about the tourist without NFC credit cards? What they will do without MetroCard?
      3. Transit between buses and subway with using MetroCard is Safer from information leakage.
Because credit cards cannot change its owner.
MetroCard only can change its owner.

Great video and clear explanation of how OMNY works. On your point at 6:05, if you are a tourist visiting from another country, you can avoid paying extra fees by using a credit card that is denominated in US dollars, such as Revolut. Just remember to convert any other currency on your Revolut card to US dollars before making a purchase, so you won't be charged any additional foreign transaction fees.

OMNY (One Metro New York) fare system is love at first sight. I am a New York trans plant living in Florida. I come to New York periodically to visit with family. During this time I take at least one trip to the city. For years I have enjoyed the convenience of MTA Etix on the Long Island Railroad. This takes technology to the next level as I can enter the subway the same way I pay for goods at a retail store or pay my check at a restaurant, using my smartphone or smart watch. I like the idea of entering the subway without having to pull out my wallet or even my phone. I certainly hope that other municipalities throughout the world adopt this new contactless payment system.

I work 6 days a week, hence, I take 12 trips on the train every week, which my monthly metro card discounts. If I take extra rides on my day off or during the week, my rides are being being discounted. Looks like I will be paying a full $2.75 per ride from now on, AND giving the MTA access to my bank accounts. How convenient for them.

One thing to note for commuters who travel to NYC for work is to check their company's benefits portal and see if they have commuter benefits. Usually you can sign up for their version of a debit card that has pre-tax benefits and would be the better solution to Metro/OMNY cards where you just pay out of pocket.

Honestly, the MTA should keep the OMNY and metrocard. Think about those that don't have a phone with NFC, the elderly, etc. The MTA needs to really rethink phasing-out the metrocard. The unlimited part should be where it's like the weekly metrocard, where it doesn't matter whether you start using it Monday or Friday.

I find it difficult coming from London where Oyster has daily fare capping, and travel card products you can buy on the card for a 7/14/28 day or up to a year period, whereas OMNY works on calendar week and the first 12 trips are paid. Oyster has also supported Contactless Payment Cards since 2013. Both the OMNY and Oyster system have been developed by Cubic, so the technology is there - why can't MTA just copy TfL's system wholesale.

It's about time NYC has smart cards for their transit system. Boston has had the Charlie Card since 2006 and Portland ME started with the Dirigo Touch Pass smart cards a couple of years ago. I go to NYC about 2-3 times a year, so it will be great to have smart cards for all 3 transit systems that I regularly use. Hopefully you'll say where to purchase the OMNY cards in your upcoming video.

Thanks for the video! I am a New York native but my family moved in 2018 before OMNY was a thing. I come back every year or so, but still use unlimited 7 day Metro cards and was hesitant to use OMNY because I wasn’t 100% sure of fare-capping until they started having those signs on the subway. After watching this I finally understand it fully but now I’m concerned about not being able to use the Metro card for midweek to midweek trips after it gets discontinued :/ I’m also more of a fan of the Metro card material than the OMNY cards because solid cards take up more room in a wallet/phone case while the Metro was flexible, compact, and brightly colored for easy locating. Of course paying by phone is easier but I feel an OMNY card is good to have as an emergency backup for a dead phone battery, lost wallet, etc.

New York finally is going contactless for public transportation. In Philadelphia as I use SEPTA and their contactless fare payment system is called SEPTA Key and can be used on SEPTA as the card is $4.95 plus add money into what is called a travel wallet and it costs $2 for a ride on the bus, trolley, and rapid transit plus you get one free transfer. But here in New Jersey we’re stuck in the 20th Century as NJ Transit you still pay or we still use tickets or passes, but we have an app where we could have our bus and train tickets on our smart phones. Wish that NJ Transit would get with the times.

The entire region NYC Subway, LLRR, MNRR, NJ Transit, all airport light rail and bus services should be one fair. In a single fare system we would all pay from first entry to exit of the system even with transfers lines. Right now NYC is $2.75 with a cap of $33 a week no matter the amount you use the system. Many countries are already switching to this type of system. Our region needs to be unified in this payment model. A $40 round trip to NYC and back is ridiculous. It's the main reason why I'll always drive there.

I’m sorry, but Fare Capping (or at least how the MTA has structured it) is really stupid. No one realistically spends $33.50 on bus/train fares a week, and even if someone is expected to make several trips a week, the 7-day unlimited is still the more viable option. If they wanted to make fare capping viable, either extend the period to receive free rides after hitting 12 rides to two weeks, or impose no deadline and receive free rides after hitting 12 rides until the end of whichever week the fare cap was met.
As it stand now, I have no incentive to take advantage of fare capping.

    • @karalynne7616

Correct me if I am wrong, but with OMNY you only pay for rides you take at $2.75. So if you only take say 6 during the week, you spent $16.50. But if you do take the 12 for $33, rest of week is "free". So it semes to me OMNY is better because if you pay $33 for a 7 day metro card and only take the 6 rides, you wasted $.

    4 weeks (28 days) = $33x4= $132
    Then 2 days is $5.5x2= $11
    Total $132+$11= $143
    30-day Unlimited Metrocard
    Total $127
With Omny You End Up Paying…
$16 EXTRA (per month if you commute daily)

No foreign transaction fee for me. At least nothing too bad. If there was a fee it was baked into the conversion rate.
If you're visiting NYC from overseas and you can check your online banking, you should at least give the Omny a try, it is pretty painless.

Look at any American currency bill. It says, "This note is legal tender, for all debts, public and private." The city operates public transportation. Are you saying the government refuses to accept the nation's currency? If I want to pay for my subway ride, I can't pay the fare amount to an agent and be on my way, ticket in hand?

6:07 I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that your credit card is charged only once per day regardless of the number of individual trips in that day. So one "Foreign fees" hit per day, not per journey.

Great video as always Thea. So... for the q70 bus that leaves LGA and connects with the Subway, would we still have to get a ticket at the Kiosk, or do we just wave our credit card at the omny reader on the bus? And does the airtrain at JFK use the omny?

    • @UrbanCaffeine

  • @davidlazarus67

For tourists the Metrocard seems to be the better option, especially overseas tourists. Also making the OMNY card work for 7 days from first use would solve the problems for tourists arriving midweek for 7 days.
Would the JFK and EWR air trains be included? What about LIRR? So could a tourist flying into JFK and using the Air train to get to the LIRR could use the same card?

    • @UrbanCaffeine
