Three years ago I left Canada, set up a residency in Bulgaria, and traveled all over the world.
Why I decided to make such a drastic move, and what did I learn from it?
Was it just Canadian tax that influenced my decision to move? What are my thoughts on Canada now? What changed in the meantime? Is Canada one of the best places in the world to live? Why or Why not?
Hopefully, this video gives you a little bit of insight into the pros and cons of Canada.
Who are we and what do we do?

I left Toronto and moved to Atlanta 3 years ago and never looked back. My life is a lot better and I am much happier in Atlanta and the most important thing, I can afford a beautiful house in a great neighborhood on a nice piece of land. I finally have opportunities in life! In Toronto I could not even afford a shoebox outside of the city. Plus, my social life is much better in Atlanta. People are much friendlier and more open. Saying that Canadians are nice is a big myth (lived in Toronto for 12 years so I can make this statement). Maybe everyone sounds nice but in reality no one gives a shit about you and it is just a fake play. People in Toronto are so reserved and stand-offish and me being born in Serbia, Europe and knowing my entire neighborhood, Canadian way of life seemed so pathetic to me. People in the elevator dont say anything, people dont know their closest neighbor, everyone is self-centered etc. I think weather and climate plays a role in this but overall it was just weird culture in my opinion. Not to mention high taxes... If you want to have fairly safe and mediocre life Canada is great, if you want to dream big and achieve success look elsewhere...

Hi Bojan, I'm from Slovenia and came to Toronto 5 years ago as an international student. I'm planning to move out in the next months back home. What you've said is 100% correct. It's very, very hard to survive here. Not to mention those fake smiles Ohhh how are you?? I miss my country, our culture, our Serbian brothers and sisters being honest and authentic. You've made the right move!

Grew up in Canada and left when I was 19. Never looked back. Taxes are ridiculous. Canada’s biggest problem is Tall Poppy Syndrome where the population tries to cut down the successful and save the losers

Coming here as an international student was a hectic experience. Locals don't really welcome you. Nobody comes and talks, people are walking here & there but nobody having group chats or fun!
The culture is so different, people are like machines. In my country, people fight with each other, bump into each other, people laugh, cry.. there are interactions! But here, everything's like acting

I left Canada 20 years ago. I could never move back because the healthcare system is good but not great, there are better. The taxes are soul crushing. There isn’t any opportunity for people who are wealth creators. The people who live in Canada tend to have a very narrow minded world view, they really don’t seem to get how life works beyond the boundaries of their own village. Think Little Britain but with a Canadian accent.

$185 fines for cycling on the seawall without a helmet! (No cars there, and very little real danger.) Lotsa rules, lotsa public servants, lotsa enforcement. A real shithole. I left Vancouver in 1987, and every time I go back it is worse....
Born and raised here, I'm in my mid 50's, this city went from a dream to be raised in to an absolutely disgusting Hell hole.
I'm happy you got out, I'm stuck as my family is brainwashed to believing this toilet of a city and country is doing g just fine. Knowing what this city and country was and what it's become is horrifying.

I am Canadian, but I lived in many different countries in the world, like Sweden, France, England, but I never found a worse customer service!! and people are not nice, they are passive-aggressive!!

@@lindacampbell5561 I live in Toronto and I find the customer service is terrible, more so if you are dealing with a government employee. It's like they hate their jobs and think they are superior to you, and talk in a condescending tone. I was booking a doctors appointment and the receptionist started yelling at me, I said " STOP, why are you speaking to me this way??" She went all quiet and changed the subject not apologetic, nothing. I think they do this because people do not call them out on their nasty tone and behavior. There really is a negative energy in this cold, concrete city, not the city I once knew , sadly.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to not supporting nor promoting one’s individual success. It almost seems that there’s acceptance of an elite who make policy here, that our passive society accepts without any questioning, and that those who look to innovate or progress in society are not only not supported, they’re gatekept from people who have the ability to aid them move forward. I’ve witnessed this not only with government policy, but with employers, educators, etc.
Life here almost seems impossible.

This video was essentially made for me as I'm canadian, self employed and in the beginning stages of moving to the cayman islands. You're absolutely right about the culture regarding entrepreneurship. I'd classify it as a culture that no longer values self discipline, vision or drive. Anyway, if you know of any accountant that specializes in the process of becoming a non resident of Canada for tax purposes I'd appreciate your input, cheers.

For Non-resident of canada, just make sure to spend less than 183 days with no taxable canadian source income. That's it!

My wife is Japanese and I'm Australian, we live in Perth. We are exploring options to live overseas as the cost of a basic lifestyle means we both have to work. Dual income first world societies really suck the lifeblood of the family unit. There is more to life than perfect roads and quiet streets of the suburbs.

Hey Ben. Similar situation to you. I hope you and your wife found somewhere nice to settle. If you two earn enough via remote work or a business, Thailand's elite visa is a great option. We used to worry about schooling, but looking at the state of schools in the 5 Eyes, we might as well homeschool kids. Having a bunch of bad educators, a failing system and peers who were raised by iPads is not good enough. Japan is a tough culture, but you international schools and housing costs outside of core Tokyo are great. I loved living there. If you can make it in, Singapore is lovely as well. Its good to see Aussies and Kiwis getting out while you can.
Canada's democracy is fundamentally broken. Southern Ontario to Southern Quebec have more than 50% of the country's population and set policies that are unrealistic for the rest of the country that deals with different climate and challenges. There's a totally broken democratic system in two major dimensions: rural vs dense urban populations and central vs western Canada. Frankly, I've given up on Canada as a business friendly place.... It's a protected market across many goods and services, and Canadian consumers suffer with high costs of living on top of the high income and property taxes. Telecom, dairy, pork,poultry, even upholstered furniture are all.protected markets that Canadians pay more to subsidize government sanctioned oligopolies. The federal and provincial governments pandemic response was the final nail the coffin for me.

I would even question Canada's sovereignty at this point. Our politics are highly reactionary and issues like gun crime are driven by illegal guns from the USA. Social issues are like gasoline on fire due to American media. If you just look at our economy and think of NAFTA critically, are we really that different? The sad part is you lose all the economic benefits of the USA, while the safety and healthcare of Canada is falling off a cliff.
Similar to Nomad Capitalist, Andrew Henderson. The old legacy Anglo European Empire doesn’t treat its people well, and the political environment is steadily deteriorating. I love my Canadian home but I’m looking for an escape plan.

I'm back in Vancouver & will be staying for a few months this time, after being gone for some 23 yrs, initially just wanting to travel & working abroad for some int. experiences n which I did, having travelled & worked in over 50 countries the past 23 yrs and absolutely wanting more of it! I shed some tear while I waved goodbye to my favourite city to none, Vancouver, yrs back & vowed to myself that I'd back soon & definitely retiring in Vancouver and as much as I still love Vancouver & the million hikes & beautiful trails & sights I'm visiting daily, I'm doubtful if I'd ever be back here for good due to many other reasons...😢 Well, I've to thank God for the beautiful Canadian passport which opens up the whole wide world for us to explore & love....

@@souiritv8355 I consider Belgrade, Serbia my HQ and travel quite a bit. The amount of foreigners that are coming from North America here is staggering (along with Russians now). People dont realize that in some ways the poorer a country it is the more normal it is, something to be said about surviving and not dealing with so called Champagne problems, it creates weak character.

I've been a 'self-employed' entrepreneur for the past 10 years. I have found that 90% of the people I know at home (the Nation's capital), don't understand my desire to be an entrepreneur (a digital nomad) and it's mostly because of culture and my guess has been because it's a Government city and people are raised to believe your best bet is to work in the Gov't for 30 years and get your pension and then you can retire. They just don't understand why I'd struggle to live a different life.
There is no where in the world that is perfect for everyone. There is, however, some place for every one. I am anxious to move to Portugal myself... for many reasons. I love Canada, but it's not where I want to live anymore.

I worked in Fed Gov in Ottawa a few years - Depressing and boring. MY boss at the time said its clear based on your cv that you want to travel, so take 50% of your day and find a new job abroad. Im 43, and have worked in Egypt, Nepal, Korea, and now Thailand for 7 years. No regrets. I have been able to save and invest much more money than I could have if I lived in Canada. I can retire now if I want.
Left Toronto 18 years ago and never looked back. People are insular and clique there and afraid of their own shadow. Very negative energies there. The only city where you can live a lifetime and not make a true friend, just a lot of frenemies.

Been to Vancouver 15 years ago, beautiful city. Now it’s as loony as Seattle and Portland. Lived in Toronto for two years, I wasn’t affected by the politics so much as I was going home in two years. But definitely Canada doesn’t internationalize too much, compared to USA. Tim hortons! Anyways yea Canada drew in people from all over the world but I see it as a safe heaven. Even one feels comfortable there and they don’t need to build… I miss living in Toronto minus the weather but there are greener pastures
I left Canada for New Zealand and just returned. I spent 4 years in New Zealand and had no idea it would be considerably worse than Canada. No matter what you read or how much you read nothing replaces actually being there and experiencing life in that country. In saying that we are planning to leave again. Housing, the cost of living, the lack of medical care ( we are on a 5 year waiting list to get a Doctor), taxes, are beyond ludicrous. The brain drain is starting and money is quickly living Canada for alternative countries. It will take some time for the imbalances to adjust themselves, if at all. We have several countries in mind, and are now just in the process of exploring and doing research. However before we make another move we plan to live in that country for a short period of time, in order to make a truly informed decision as opposed to relying on google searches.

NZ is great if you're very young, married with either young kids or no kids and are totally healthy + at least one person earns above $100k NZD. Below that? Yikes.

Australia, Cana, NZ are the same story, or very similar. If you want different, move to US.
Reasons for leaving. Personal freedom. My family escaped South Africa in the 1960's, now Canada is well on its' way to adopting the policies that lead to totalitarian rule. Ask our best and brightest constitutional lawyers how far down the road we are on that. All of my friends that escaped oppressive regimes/dictatorships in Asia, Central and South America, Africa and former Soviet countries are leaving too.

I came from the Soviet Union and I love it here - rule of law and freedom of speech. So, all of my former Soviet friends who emigrated here are enjoying this country. If you refer to the pandemic measure, that's in every country in the world - at least we didn't have complete shout down as they had in Europe.

I live in the çzech Republic which up to now is a great place to live. Visited Canada for 3 days and hated it. Yes people are friendly but the friendliness not only seems fake but they seem tight ass. And seem to get offended if you say the wrong thing. In Prague you don't have to worry about petty stuff like that.

A quick yet rather accurate assessment of Canadian cult(ure). I lived and worked in downtown Toronto for about 15 years. I left just over 2 years ago, for my own sanity - not to maintain it, but to work on getting it back. I'm only partially sane now, on any given day.
In order to restore sanity and build confidently upon that foundation, I must leave the country ... again. Only this time for good. All the best to you and yours.
I moved to Vancouver from the UK 26 years ago. It's been a mixed bag. I've done OK in real estate and my own contracting business. The good points are the outdoors, the scenic beauty, relatively safe in terms of crime ...although as someone who didn't take the jab the government has gotten scary. The bad for me here it the the F***ng rain! Also just how you can live here for years and years and not really know many people, and no one gives a hoot about you. On my street there are 13 houses, only me and one other house where English is a first language. So, it's difficult to impossible to know someone when you can't speak to each other. So it's a bit like you do OK financially, live a physically healthy life, but a spiritually draining one at the same time. You sit in your house a lot of the time because it honestly rains from mid September until May, then it's pretty good with some rain and 2 months of dry summer, then rain again. But you can go skiing if you want to, and Mexico is less than 5 hours away. All in all I guess I'd say it's for sure one of the better places to live in the world. But has some big downsides. To use an analogy, I'd say living in Vancouver is like dating a beautiful women who is often mean. If you've ever been in that situation you'll know what I mean. It holds you in an unhealthy pattern, and you hope it'll get better, because if it did, it'd be ideal. But it doesn't, so you wasted a lot of your time/life hoping it would. I'm 60 and I could sell my house and retire if I move somewhere cheaper. Thing is I don't know where I'd go. I've been to about 25 different countries and I didn't really find one that was obviously way better. So maybe I'll just spend winters away.

Michigan is great for Canadians, especially on the east side of the state( where we touch). Not too much to surprise Canadians here. Jobs are available & so is entrepreneurship., although only having 2 cities of any size can limit the types of jobs. Nothing to surprise Canadians with weather wise either!! Come over & try us!!
If I were younger and single I would seriously look at leaving Canada. We left Ontario three years ago for rural Alberta, didn't like Ontario culture. The taxes are cheaper, fuel,housing and car insurance. It is very sunny year round, not much snow where we are, and you don't have that sickening humidity that spoils the summers out east. I find the people here much more friendly as well.
Where to exactly? I am young (18) and single. I am Canadian but also British, Irish, and maybe also Hungarian too. I only speak English however. I have perviously lived in the UK (Northern Ireland), and France before coming to Canada with my family in 2010. I find it hard to save up money due to working at only minimum wage is no fun even in downtown Toronto. I am also not used to living on my own.
@@owenready7043 All the countries you listed face similar problems. However, I found France to be the cheapest to live in and it has a nice weather. However, the economy is not doing very well but at least everything is affordable.
The best advice you can give is come to Canada in February, then decide.
All the G7 nations right now are taring down all that was good and we are all entering a dystopian nightmare. It seems to me countries outside of these are better places to be
The killer is the house prices in these countries, if you didn't get into the market 15 years ago it's impossible to get anything decent.

I lived in Kitsilano for two years. The weather in Vancouver is great in July and August. The rest of the year it rains.

Travel around northern Alberta, it looks so run down and decrepit.
I and my family are based in France and we have recently gotten permanent resident status in Canada. we plan to travel to Canada with our three kids in July for about a couple of months to get our PR card and basically discover Canada a bit.
We might end up not staying and will probably head back to France.
I fear that in Canada, we would have to start afresh in our careers plus the taxes are high I hear. I also do not believe that the Canadian healthcare is as good as the French healthcare system.

I left Canada 32 years ago. One of the factors was how easy it was for undeserving people to get free money from the government. A workmate at a house we were painting was worried about being behind on payments for his new car. He went to some government agency the next day to ask for a handout. He came back to me smiling and said they gave him three months worth of car payments. That pretty much convinced me of that joke “Canadians work for the government for free for half of the year” was true. And when I saw people collecting unemployment cheques when there are so many job openings at fast food places, I realised taxes which were already high can only go higher in the future because of the Government’s free wheeling welfare system. So I saved up for two years, booked a one way ticket to Asia and have not looked back since.

The welfare system in Australia is encouraging Laziness.
There are jobs around, but many people are not willing to do the job because it's very easy for them to get tax payers money from government.
And you that work so hard has no rewards for your hard work.
I love working, but the system did not reward me at all due to the highest taxes.
I'm leaving Australia this year to a place where I can get reward for being a worker.

32yrs ago in Canada...yes, the era of "unemployment enjoyment"..work like 4 months and smoke dope while collecting UI for 1yr...ridiculous!..the Gov. finally wised-up with more hoops to jump through to qualify.
I left Canada in 1988 to travel the world, lived in Goa for 3yrs - after that experience I could never live life back in Canada again. Since 2005, I live in the mountains of Northern Thailand with my wife and 2 kids. Paradise!

As someone who transplanted to Silicon Valley I can say life is far better outside Canada. People are friendlier and seem more genuine. The one thing i really noticed is how much less people swear outside of Canada, there appears to be a much higher feeling of anxiety and frustration amongst Canadians which i believe is responsible for this difference. Another thing i noticed is Americans seem to accept that they are imperfect and have serious social and economic issues whereas Canadians are quite smug and exude an air of irrational superiority and will immediately deflect when you point out homelessness or health care wait times and quality and other serious ongoing issues. The people down here are much smarter and worldly and have a much greater can-do attitude than Canadians who seem to be far more negative and see the problems before you even finish your sentence explaining your ideas. The worst thing about living in Canada is the high income taxes and very low property taxes, Canada is a very expensive place to be a skilled wage earner whereas in the US you pay lower income tax, and much higher property tax. In Canada i resented people from around the world especially China coming in and buying up property and paying no income tax and very little property tax yet enjoying all of the benefits of social programs that were largely paid for by wage earners. Either way I'm glad to be out of Canada and especially enjoy the nicer climate of the bay area.

Reasons... better standard of living, better weather, experiencing new cultures, more freedom (especially after being imprisoned for most of 2020!), better healthcare, more laidback lifestyle, lower taxes, better internet speeds, more interesting architecture, perhaps live in a UNESCO world heritage town, meeting interesting people with strange-sounding names and most of all, travel to the next pot of gold. After investigating and researching residencies, second passports, long term travel, and some tax information over the past 7 years - I feel I've got a pretty good handle on this subject but as detail counts - one size certainly does not fit all, we will need individual advice and a sanity check of our plans!

Your description of Canada is almost identical to that of Germany. Over here we've the same problems:
1) Businessmen and Entrepreneurs are viewed as the Enemy.
2) Moving away from Free Market Capitalism (growing the pie) towards Socialism and Envy politics (redistributing the pie)

I find Vancouver to be hostile. Rent are expensive and overrated (I am in fact Belgian and grew up in France just to give you some context); buying a house is an “insult” (this is why I plan to buy in Europe instead as it is 2-3 times cheaper if I buy in some towns in France or Belgium) and many people in Vancouver seem to be unhappy and frustrated by where their lives has taken them! In regards to the girls here, I found them to be “nice” but in fact, they are just nice on the surface only (if I have to compare it to my experience of girls in France or Belgium). In Vancouver, most girls are very “money oriented” (yes and many of them date “sugar daddies but that is not known outside Canada, right?) and so many look for financial security in a partner than a sane relationship! I am not astonished to see why so many end up being unhappy, depressed suffering in their relationship and above all… end up being alone (and end up using dildos) and regretting their lives years later! After having lived in this place for 6 years (a place which I would leave behind soon hopefully as we are heading back to Europe soon), I am so glad to leave this place for good! Many relationships here are fake and superficial (compared to Europe) And it is a city where sooooo many girls (they pretend they are not) are sooo lonely.. now I am ni longer astonished why dildos sell so well!!! This is why so many (people and Vancouver girls) here smoke pots and end up being depressed or having lots of mental disorders! Now on top of that, I hate their hospitals where you have to wait for everything (in Belgium that has never existed), and dislike those fake social interactions that many think it is worth something when in fact, it is just superficial-ness, illusion and coldness. I strong believe that Canada is “worth it” but providing that you are thinking of it as a place to pass by, not retire or immigrate for ever! It is also worth it if you have an income from overseas (business or rent income) so you do not have to depend on local jobs which pay very medium salaries and a tax system that sucks everything you worked for! reasons for leaving Canada: 1. ageing population transferring their social tax burden(s) to others while hoarding capital 2. anti-wealth building culture from top down (similar to your observations) 3. favourable demographics in Asia (more youth, dynamic growth, and more optimism in general). Having said that i don’t mind visiting YVR in spring or summer and maximizing the use of CAD and passport for easy-access to SE Asia, North East Asia etc. (Korea visa-exempt stamp is valid 6 months, Japan temporary visitor stamp 3 months for Canadians, Thailand currently 45 days). My current strategy is to carry multiple access rights (passport, PR rights, long stay visas) and then optimize residence based on short-haul flights and reduce tax burden on passive income sources. TBH I’ve got more freedom and flexibility operating in a low cost footprint rather than trying to constantly scale up capital in a ‘red oceans’ game.

Entrepreneur types I know in Canada are tied to the energy or natural resource sectors. Their wealth is tied to a physical location. They see a lot of risk in doing the same kind of work in most other places in the world. Stakeholders, Legal, regulatory, corruption and/or violence. Their local knowledge of how to develop projects is their key differentiator.

If you're in or anywhere near Maine, I'd partially agree. A term such as "friendly Canadians" needs to be qualified. Simple translation = polite. Canadian here who has lived in all major cities. Shelter cost eats up 60% of your after-tax pay. The remaining goes into your insurances, groceries, and other essentials. As someone who lives in Brazil and knows a loooot about the US, I can say that the poor attitude towards rich people isn't exclusive to Canada. In Brazil, people want the successful to get screwed. In the US, politicians have been using the "he's a billionaire, a villain!" argument to slander their competitors for ages now, even though it's not their fault that they accrued all that wealth in a country where the politicians themselves made the laws.

..the last time I was in Vancouver - I was surprised to see so many Starbucks coffee shops(literally right opposite each other) The customer service was second to none and it was cool just to walk around ... at the time , it seemed like a city that was still under construction... :)

Getting a green card or work visa to the US isn't an option for most people in the Philippines or India.
Going from an H1B to a green card can take way too long.
But overall Canada is just depressing. It's in the air, the weather the lockdowns, scraping ice off your car. It's too much.
Canadians also have this immense acceptance of whatever the government is doing, no passion or spirit, very dull.
The US is not perfect, no country is, I still feel some good free states down there. I also feel Americans are more warm and direct.

Bottom line, you CANNOT get rich in Canada easily. The taxes and government waste is the worst aspect of this country. The high taxes disincentivizes work and reduces people risk taking, as there is no return on investment for being an entrepreuner.
If you want to ahead in life and become some kind of millionair or billionaire, the USA is the best place for that.

There is no life in Canada. Except that is great country, just to cold !
What you need to consider is that there are two kinds of issues in every country that will affect you.
1. The country/state wide issues, like laws, taxes, quality of medical services (not talking about the price). These you cannot escape and will have to deal with on daily basis, so you need to consider them from the very beginning.
2. Local issues, like crime/safety, community/friendliness, culture/leisure, career/pay, consumer prices, real estate, etc. These you can "escape" as they will differ in different areas of the country, so you can always find what suits you the best and build up from there.
Of course the second part means that a larger country (size of land, not people) will be easier to navigate and find a place that will suit your likes and needs. Taking both issues into consideration, I still think that USA is the best. Just my two cents...
Having lived and worked in eight countries I always laugh when Canadians try to use healthcare as some enormous bonus, usually used in comparison to the US. If you have lived 'anywhere' you know that our healthcare is sub par on so many levels. Give me Germany or Denmark or Spain any day. Offshore Citizen is dead on when it comes to Eastern Europeans. I think it's illegal to smile or be polite.
