  • In the Midnight Hour is a song by Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper. It’s a staple of early R&B and its guitar “thwack” became a standard as well - coming on the 2nd and 4th beats. This is part 1 of the lessons on In the Midnight Hour. To get more, please go to The Joy of Guitar linked below.

    Kudos for being true to the Colonel and the elegance of what he played/plays. A lot of ppl who post guitar lessons just get the basic chord progression and they blast through it trying to strum all 6 string on each chord rather than listening to what's really on the recording. Often they don't spend any time on getting a good guitar sound appropriate to the song.

      Thanks a lot Johnny! I never claim to get it exactly, but it try to get the right vibe and essence. A really important thing I learned early on - don't bash out barre chords - was burned into my brain. Steve Cropper's restrained playing is one of the reasons this song remains popular to this day!

    Love this idea Mark👍 But would like to see it used on some 80's songs. Jeff Healy Band "When the Night Comes Falling" would be cool 😎

      Hi Cap. That's the Dylan song, right? Just so it's understood. This will be for the Facebook group "The Joy of Guitar". We're not covering learning songs verbatim. We're learning how to play jams (Week 1 = chords, Week 2 = rhythm variations, Week 3 = melody, Week 4 = soloing). So the songs would be typical songs you'd hear in a jam session.
      Here's the key thing. I'm not going to be the one posting everything. People in the group are encouraged to record themselves and post to get (compassionate, constructive) feedback.
      Just want to be clear. It's not a UA-cam thing for the most part.
      So I could think about doing a UA-cam video on Jeff Healey's version of "When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky". I'm not sure it's a popular jam though. I've never heard it called out in a session. It's fun and easy enough to jam to though for sure; simple chords, simple harmonic structure, fun and easy to solo to.

      @@MarkZabel Man, I am really loving what you are doing. I am just discovering your channel! Jeff Healey was an incredible guitarist by any measure. His unique style of playing his guitar face up across his lap and seemingly tapping the fretboard with all 5 fingers was legendary. He literally personified the term "blind blues guitar player." I've yet to hear anybody come close to what he was doing. He sadly passed away in 2008 from Cancer. I think Cap is referring to the rocked out version of this song, made popular by the Jeff Healey Band in the 1989 movie Road House. If I'm not mistaken, it was the outro song at the end of the movie.

      I'm thinking the first lessons (i.e., week 1 of 4) will be on here. FB will have the rough videos, because it's a community thing I'm trying to build with feedback. The members are encouraged to post to show progress. And probably a finished set of videos will be available eventually on my Teachable site. I'm working on a collection with the working title of "Jam Night" that uses the format here: a couple ways of approaching rhythm and a couple ways of approaching lead for 5-10 songs.

    Can't find the link mentioned to get the tab.
    I did further looking for the tab but could not find it. With all the chords being new to Me I won't be able to get this song.

    2:13 I think that’s a B chord, not D

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому

      Yeah, D to B is the turnaround.
