I found out about these instruments two days ago and thought finally, an instrument that will make me feel like I am some kind of mischievous forest spirit! I bought a Clarke Original today, and I am less mischievous spirit and more 'child with recorder'. But I will get there. Thank you for this video.

So not going to lie, I've been learning Tin Whistle for maybe 5 to 6 months, and I still come here just as a refresher course. Never hurts to relearn the basics.
Hi, I am not sure if you will see this message, but I decided to buy a tin whistle for myself (aged 73) but also for my Granddaughter to learn how to play. We have both mastered the intro and practising daily (via video lol) however, we want to move on now, but I can’t find any follow up clips, most jump into tabs etc. My question is, have you done any follow up clips as it will help greatly… Many thanks.. Mel and Mila x PS. Both whistles are in “D”
I got a tin whistle years ago on a trip to Ireland and have been meaning to learn it. Now that I am stuck at home I am finally watching your great videos!
Good God, no bloody wonder I could never get anything decent out of my tin whistle. I was using my fingertips, not the pads, and I was gripping far too tight. Confidence tentatively restored.
This is super helpful because where I live, there are no teachers that could teach me in real life. So I’ll be teaching myself after this, but this was soooo helpful!!

So this may be a little long but I hope you see this and know how much your videos/tutorials mean to me. You see I first fell in love with this instrument when I saw/heard how beautiful it can sound when I watch Star Trek The next Generation. Picard had a flute given to him which he would play ever now and then. I loved the sound it could produce. But it want until I started to look for "flutes" that I realized that I was looking for more specifically a tin whistle. Once I knew what I was looking for I started to look for tutorials that work best for me and my learning abilities seeing as how I am dyslexic. So learning things the "standard way" with f# and b and a. I am visual learner and the way you explain how, AND show which notes to play was the perfect storm to help me learn how to play. Or I should say will eventually how to play as I don't even have the money to get a cheap whistle. But I thank you for you videos and genuinely wanting to what your joy with not just me but all of the community. Happy whistling!
I ordered the Traditional Clarke Celtic Tin Whistle because it's cheap and still had good UA-cam reviews. Never played an instrument before so I hope I can do this :D
I currently only have a C whistle because it’s all I can ever find in local music shops, so I’ve resorted to making my own low D and D and others, but I don’t have any clue how to play it yet and your tutorial seems pretty legit and simple, I’m subscribe and keep learning 👍😎
Thank you for the video, I’ve tried to learn how to play in the past but with limited success, I’m prepared to have another go after watching this-thank you.
This video is great, I used to have to play a recorder in 5th grade so I knew how to hold and play it but I struggled with reading notes, thank you for the guide
So glad you said we need a Whistle in D. Bought one a few years back and tried to learn by a book (which did not work out great) and was worried I'd have the "wrong" whistle.
If you’re just getting started I recommend learning to read sheet music (even if it means playing nursery rhymes for quite some time) don’t become dependent on tablature. Then concentrate on playing by ear so you are not a slave to sheet music. This is what I’m doing this go round, as I’ve picked up the whistle again. Don’t compare yourself to others and take all the time you need.
Thank you so much for this video; it's been extremely helpful as I really didn't know what I was doing before. Whereas now I actually have a half decent chance at getting started with this not so seemingly-simple instrument.
You have such a warmth about you, thank you so much for taking the time to do this lesson, 28 year old scotsman here looking to go back to his celtic roots haha :)
I have had an an old feadog teoranta irish whistle, D, lying around for years. first lesson done, ty. If i manage 'will ye go lassie go', i will be happy with that ;)
I inherited a tin whistle and song book (multi-language with both music scales and tab notations or whatever you would call the little diagrams of the hole placement) and the only song in it I know is Red River Valley, but I've been killing my own ears with that one note, already forgot what letter was said but, all fingers down except 1 on the top left. Finally after watching this and practicing along I was able to make a sound that is compatible with human ears. Thank you. Now I'm finally at "child with recorder" level instead of "banshee crying out local deaths" level in craft 😔🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Welp I looked again at the book before posting this, and the note was d. Apparently there's a tiny little plus sign in the diagram reminding me to blow harder. It didn't explain how to cover the holes with the flats of my fingers, relax my hands, center the mouthpiece just on the tip of my lip, not inside my mouth like a sax, or leaving a wide gap, like a flute, and then run me through the scales though. Some things you really need to see or do to order to learn how to do it **right**
So pleased this video was helpful. On a tin whistle, you can actually hit two notes on every hole. One blowing hard, one blowing soft. One thing that tends to happen is that people blow much harder than necessary when starting out and often end up in what we call 'the second octave' or the high notes straight away, when they should be playing low notes. That means when you try and play that D+ you need to blow even harder to hit a clean note. Make sure when you're trying to play that low D (without the +sign) that you're really just breathing very very gently through the whistle. I have a beginner's course on my playlists that you can follow for free to help get you up and running. Good luck ❤️ and don't forget to enjoy it. x
I just bought mine~ was dying for years to get an irish whistle, and very grateful for this to need soft and gentle moves to be played, im so soft on everything x'D; so this is perfect for me :'D Thankyou so much, this is helpful even after many years♥
Something that has helped my playing is recording myself. If you're like me, the first time you hear yourself you might feel like snapping your whistle in two--but don't! I also experienced a little "stage fright." It was just me and my phone in the room but there was still pressure to get it right. That will pass, too. I have no problem reading the notes/tabs but my playing was rhythmically choppy. Hearing my playing improved the flow of the music. Most phones have a built-in recording app.
Thank you so much, your lesson is very, very useful for me, beginner... I've just bought my first tin-whistl in D ("Feadóg"), and you really help me. Greetings from Saint-Petersburg...

very happy with your teaching style :D as a teacher i aprove
If you’re just getting started I recommend learning to read sheet music (even if it means playing nursery rhymes for quite some time) don’t become dependent on tablature. Then concentrate on playing by ear so you are not a slave to sheet music. This is what I’m doing this go round, as I’ve picked up the whistle again. Don’t compare yourself to others and take all the time you need.
Thank you so much for this video; it's been extremely helpful as I really didn't know what I was doing before. Whereas now I actually have a half decent chance at getting started with this not so seemingly-simple instrument.
so happy 2 find you. i love the penny whistle. i hool 2 learn a lot. i have got a C whistle
I'm having an absolute BLAST learning! My miniature dachshund is enjoying howling with me! lolol Cheers!
Howling, that's an improvement on my GSD, he just groans when I start playing, lol.

I love your channel! I just got my tin whistle key D in the mail and have been practicing thanks to your videos! Thank you!
You have such a warmth about you, thank you so much for taking the time to do this lesson, 28 year old scotsman here looking to go back to his celtic roots haha :)
Thank you 😊I hope you enjoy the channel. x
You got a old new student. I'm going to get a Waltons Irish Penny Whistle this weekend, and will start learning. Thanks so much for.
Thanks, you are a great teacher. I used to play ukulele in an Irish group. My D whistle is on order and I' anxious to learn.
I have had an an old feadog teoranta irish whistle, D, lying around for years. first lesson done, ty. If i manage 'will ye go lassie go', i will be happy with that ;)
Thanks for your videos, I'm just getting started with my very first F tin whistle
Thank you.
Now I'm finally at "child with recorder" level instead of "banshee crying out local deaths" level in craft 😔🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Welp I looked again at the book before posting this, and the note was d.
Good luck ❤️ and don't forget to enjoy it. x
I just bought mine~ was dying for years to get an irish whistle, and very grateful for this to need soft and gentle moves to be played, im so soft on everything x'D; so this is perfect for me :'D
Thankyou so much, this is helpful even after many years♥
Something that has helped my playing is recording myself.
Thanks CutiePie, was struggling with the pitch and blow pressure, cleared it right up 🙏😎
Thanks so much,i got all my questions being answered,May God bless you always!
I just finished my first lesson with this video! Thanks! You're quite the musical Mary Poppins!
