I missed it live yesterday due to my own stupidity, but this is one of the best, most detailed talks on wargaming I have seen, and I have watched a lot of them since COVID hit. I played Dunn-Kempf in the US Army in the early 1980s, as well as lots of commercial tactical games like SPI Firefight, and found them useful as I played the Soviets as an armor battalion S-2. I got the opportunity to play out Soviet doctrine at the tactical level (regimental level and below), experiences that came in very useful at the National Training Center during two rotations there. Now I focus more on strategic-level games, and use a Matrix game in one course I teach, and a hex-and-counter board game in another. Great job Tom, Phil, and Ivor!
Sadly, this component was removed from the US Army's MHIC when the class went virtual. I feel it is a component of that course, which should somehow be brought back. The virtual course is still quite good, though!
