Legacy WW2: How the Second World War continues to shape Western Defence discourse
Despite ending over 8 decades ago the legacy of WW2 lives on in the Western mind, media and public discourse about Defence and Military subjects. Has this left us less prepared to deal with the conflicts of the modern era and the associated defence planning, procurement and tactics required therein.
Our speaker, Prof. Andrew Stewart, is Director of Conflict Research at the Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research, the British Army’s think-tank. An Honorary Professor at the Australian National University in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre and a Visiting Professor in King’s College London’s School of Security Studies, he was previously Director of Academic Studies at the Royal College of Defence Studies and Principal at the Australian War College. Most recently he was a faculty member at the Royal Danish Defence College. His research covers twentieth century and contemporary conflict and he has published more than thirty-five books, co-edited books, book chapters and peer-reviewed and magazine articles.
What is in it for me?
1. Are we Strategically Inflexibility and fixated by Legacy Alliances?
2. Are our Logistics and Mobility Challenges, Doctrinal Rigidity and Command and Control Complexity products of a by-gone age
3. Are we still wedded to Technological Over-Reliance?

0:38: A "primary" Main Supply Route? Hopefully you aren't going to start talking about "Secondary" Main Supply Routes?

I hope that means opposed to an alternate one, rather than a secondary one, which is an oxymoron.

@@nicholasshaler7442 Well we use Primary, Alternate and Secondary for MG and vehicle positions. Primary = main. Alternate = a position to cover a different arc (say Primary = Left, Alternate = right). Secondary = a different position that covers the "main" arc used if the "main" comes under fire. As for Supply Routes, usually there is a Main Supply Route (MSR) and a Secondary (or series of Secondary Supply Routes (SSR).

Wilf a contrarian? Just doing his job. Lovely to hear a sensibly laid out approach to force design. On drone size, jamming etc., UK research in 2000 (yes 24 years ago) recommended smaller, disposable and decentralised drones at bn level (lower didn't work back then) but the gravity of rank pulled WK up to Div and so we missed the chance to be at the front of the current trend.

Brilliant presentation. I have one of his books, so am thrilled to see him here. On UAV's: I think we ought to consider designing hunter killer UAV's for force protection and escort. These would tie into the web and would fly around hunting enemy uav's. We also need to look at UAV dedicated weapons. Current stuff is far too cumbersome for a tiny UAV. We need new thinking. Perhaps create infantry calibre recoilless rifles. Or perhaps scaling down the Hydra APKWS with prox fuse, to as small as we can make it. A proportionally downscaled 35 or 40mm variant(would weigh about 1kg) would be perfect for UAVs used against other UAVs or against single troops. That way we can also make FPV drones reusable.

I get the idea of creating a prototype in powerpoint but do you create physical cards to go along those prototypes or do you have some quick and dirty way of testing those in powerpoint also? I mean like in a card driven war game where those are essential part of each turn.

That is the 'go to answer' but the sad reality is no western army is getting anymore time in the field anytime soon. Therefore investing in these 'surrogate' activities makes sense instead of bemoaning the lack of field time.

The best defense for the solider on the ground from FPV drones when jamming and all other electronic defense have failed or isn't available is the good old-fashioned Shotgun. A Mossberg AT-500 6 shot Pump 12 Gauge is $800 per solider including a box or 3 of ammo, far less than $20,000 per, adding weight to kit isn't ideal but the moral boost is worth it.

My opinion, what do TGDs do? They build up recognitional decision making. While the scenario can be based on a specific piece of dirt, the decision, the dynamics of the decision can be used in an entirely different piece of dirt. The key is to make a decision quicker in the future, it really doesn't matter where the piece of dirt is.

Street to street house to house and was extremely successful... when "experts " talk about warefare and training they are always talking about the army cause they are the ill equipped illogical ones compared to the marines.... we get a bad rep with people calling marines dumb but they really have zero idea how intelligent 90% of them are and the speed of force and violence we can give to the enemy with percision

Both CMPE and CM can go up to Battlegroup size but you’re limited by map size and the span of control for a single player. Our recommendation is going no larger than Coy+ for optimal gameplay but ultimately it’s up to you.

I find that in real time it's really best if I'm not controlling much more than a company. But in turn based play it's much easier to control a battalion or more. But that comes with a slower rate of play as I try to give each part of the battlefield the same level of attention I give a company sized engagement. I can normally knock out 5-10 turns in the morning before I go to work for company or platoon sized engagements (I wake up a couple hours before I actually need to leave). But for battalion or larger sized engagements I can do 1, maybe 2 turns in the morning. So if you play real time then I concur with fightclubinternational's recommendation. If you play turn based then I think you can go larger.
