A revenge story is a form of sadism. We love seeing brutal killings and graphic violence. This movie punishes the viewer and turns that sadism against ourselves, not using violence, but sex. That's an interesting notion, I think.
For the ending. If you remember the hypnotist said that the monster side of him who knows the truth will be the one who walks away. He wakes up away from the seat, because he walked away from the seat. Meaning he woke up as the monster, knowing the truth that that is his daughter. If you look at his smile at the end he has a bit of sadness. That's another interpreting of the ending that is.

I was scared when micky said he studied this film before, but their reaction to the reveal is *chefs kiss* haha. I was fucked up after seeing this movie for a good week like I couldn’t think of anything else. I remember I had to watch several wholesome stuff just to cleanse my mind.
The hallway fight is such a cool fight scene. Comparing it to the american remake of this movie points out exactly *why* it's such a good fight too: it feels realistic. The fighting isn't over the top, it's mostly just punching and kicking. I think I read somewhere that they spent upward of 15 takes getting the whole scene down in one take, and the one they used isn't even perfect. You can see one of the actors lying on the ground, clutching his leg, because he straight up just twisted his ankle but didn't wanna mess up the take. Love it.
I'd like to put my hat in the ring here, and give my take on why people suggest this movie. Besides the cinematography, it's a GOOD MOVIE, all around! Just because the twist is uncomfortable to go through, it doesn't make the story or the movie "bad." lol The incest in Game of Thrones didn't make you question why people loved it, did it? This is a story about a shit guy trying to get revenge for his own imprisonment, all the while EXPERIENCING the revenge of someone else he's wronged, and only finding out when it's too late to stop it.
People tend to like digestible "disturbing" cinema or topics that they can tear up to or get a little grossed out by, people dislike things that actually cause discomfort or are actually disturbing.
@@MaynardsSpaceship what are you talking about? The bad guy's (woo Jin) life mission was to get revenge on him and he imprisoned him for 15 years. You think he cares about him or his daughter's consent? He's a psychopath
It should be noted, this is an adaptation of a comic, which was arguably far worse in tone and what happens, which makes this quite the triumph honestly. And makes the remake, which is definitely more a remake of this than another adaptation of the comic, being so bland and boring kind of wild honestly. The lead actor in this is fantastic and does a lot of other great films, one of my favorites being I Saw the Devil, which I’d recommend for any who like horrifying thrillers, but it’s a tough watch in a very different way. If y’all do want a Korean film that’s not full of some wild shit that’ll break your brain and is just a well shot action movie, I’d suggest The Man From Nowhere.
For your next reaction please do Apocalypto (2006) . It's brutal but ambitious , visually engaging and epic . It's surprising that this movie went so much under the radar and isn't getting the recognition it deserves
Dude in the white Jersey defo couldnt comprehend the mind boggling plot. This movie is not only artistically groundbreaking it spat on modern film making and made the audience "wonder" and "curious" in a whole new level. Even the musical ost "Last Waltz" compliments the theme of this movie so much, it paints a nice mood with the beginning of the melody but then takes a turn with the strings complicating matters to the point our emotions flare up as the song keeps going. One last thing guys, Incest made GoT huge and its not really weird for plot purposes, Imagine the main badguy was doing all this over a school crush. It wont have the same impact, the fact him and his sister were in love (is what it is) and he lost that all due to the (true) rumour spreading makes way for a good villian arc lol. The main villain planned this out for years and dedicated to his plans for 15 years in order to make Oh Dae Su suffer, but now that he got to the point where he can reveal his top plan he himself didn't feel any sense of achievement or satisfaction to the point he just blows his brains out not having any purpose to live for. Its all deep when you break down all the levels of it. Lastly the ending, we dont know if the hypnosis worked at all. His smile goes back to the best quote from the beginning as he was locked up when he used to look at that painting of the sad man crying. "Smile and the world smiles with you, weep and you weep alone" Him crying but yet smiling at the end can be interpreted 2 ways: 1) Hypnosis works (he doesnt know thats his daughter) and live his life in love with her. His daughter being oblivious to the truth. 2) Hypnosis didn't work and he will live with the truth and suffering, have no way to tell his daughter due to sacrificing his own tongue and be with his daughter in order for her to live a "happy life" Either way, he is a monster.
In a way, the villain got his revenge and "won" as people like to put it, sure. But he didnt really win, his revenge story was just a distraction for him. Once it ended he shot himself in the head because he couldnt live with the reality that it was him that let go of his sisters hand and that she was still dead. No amount of torture and revenge can fix that fact. After all that revenge and suffering, it was all pointless because the villain couldnt look at the truth and live with it. But atleast the protagonist, (if the hypnosis failed) might be able to face the truth and live on regardless of it. I think the way the movie ends and the way it begins are interesting because they show the difference between the protagonist and the antagonist. At the start the protagonist saves a random man from killing himself because, he sees himself in the monster. He can empathise with hating yourself for your sins but agrees that even though hes a monster, he still deserves to live. On the other hand, toward the end, we see the villain let go of his sister because he couldnt accept that he got her pregnant. He couldnt accept the kind of monster that he was, and once he came to face it after his revenge, he instantly gave up and opted out. For me, this shows the fundamental differencr between the two, the protagonist (i fogot his name) but I remember it means "to get by day to day". I think the movie tries to convey to us the strength of the human spirit to persevere through even the worst aspects of its own existence. Dae Su, for all his faults and sins, was manipulated, and if he has to face the truth of his actions, I would wager he would find a way to live on regardless. So in a round about way, its really the protagonist who "wins". Atleast, thats my interpretation of the film.
@@gavinferguson2938 I fully agree, very well put. I however wouldnt use the word "won" Neither won, both lost everything. Dae su wife was murdered and he was blamed for it, his daughter was kidnapped and groomed. He was stripped off of having a family and raising his daughter and instead was cursed to sexually enjoy pleasing her. Fucking twisted. Then you have the main Villian that lost his sister, love, family and his own life. Its ironic that one shoots himself and one stays living. Which is worse? They are both equally terrifying. Its like 2 sides to one coin. Head or tails, you both lose
@@animebloodsamples Yeah and thats how the movie really hits home on that point of revenge. Other stories really cant compare to oldboy in its ability to illustrate just how terrible revenge is for everyone involved. The movie is so effective at making the audience feel the suffering of its characters, to the point that by the end, we are just as emotionally raw and worn out as the protagonist is. But it goes to such extreme lengths to make you realize just how useless all of this suffering really was. As you said, nobody won, everyone lost and so we learn in a artistically traumatizing way, that revenge is a fools game.
30:03 The movie Marketa is talking about is not a French but a Canadian 2010 movie called Incendies, directed by Denis Villeneuve (the same guy who directed Dune last year). It's a great movie about the Lebanese (not Algerian) civil war.
This movie's easily the most fucked up one I've watched and it's a genuine masterpiece. I actually read the classical Greek play Oedipus Rex many years after watching this and it instantly clicked that Oldboy's writers incorporated elements of Greek tragedy. Coupled with visceral imagery, cinematography that oozes cool, and great acting, it's no wonder that this movie is so critically acclaimed and relevant throughout the decades.
i REALLY LOVE you guys for doing this movie 😭. i watched it alone and i have never ever felt messed up like that in my life. the second time i told my friends to watch it cause i wanna see their reaction. my friends are the type of people who never shuts up while watching a movie. but "Oldboy" made them shut their mouth from THAT scene right until the end. the first person to say something only uttered one word: "fuuuuuucccc*kk"
What i got from the ending is that de su tried to erase his memory so that he can stay away from her but she found him anyway , also at the very ending scene he starts smilling but you kinda see his smile fading away into misery which means that it didn’t work and he still has his memory of everything….kinda fucked up but it means that he will probably leave her and stay away from her life ….thank you and great reaction by the way
Don't worry guys, the claw hammer to the teeth and the scissor to the tongue will rent free in your mind for a while. Fortunately, this movie can be enjoyed only for once (due to its unique plot twist and its gore jump scare)
The French movie Marketa is thinking about is INCENDIES. Its not actually French but French Canadian and the last French language film of DUNE director Denis Villenuve before he started making English language films
From the moment I saw the thumbnail I was like "please don't be the remake, please don't be the remake". I'm sure there's a circle in hell where they promise you oldboy, then show you the remake and then erase your memory and do it again the next day, for all of eternity.
200% I have to go back and watch Memories of Murder and I saw the devil because it's been a long time. I really enjoyed Train to Busan. After the movie finished it took me several minutes to catch my breath.
For those wondering, the movie Marketa was talking about is … [SPOILER WARNING] . . . Incendies. It was actually directed by Denis Villeneuve, who did Blade Runner 2049 and Dune.
aw what the fuck. i vowed to watch all of villeneuve’s movies ever since i saw sicario but that’s the one that i have not had a chance to see yet until now. fuck, now i know the plot, which is horrible, so thanks i guess? i definitely won’t be seeing that thing now
you all need to open your minds...old boy is a masterpiece, incendies too ( from denis villeneuve a french canadian ) is critically acclaimed. and not all film have to finish in happy ending with the hero walking in the sunset.
Misinterpretation; Woo-Jin never actually had sex with his sister. He clearly wanted to, but wanting and doing are two separate things. Oh Dae-Su spread the rumor that they had sex, and Woo-Jin's Sister started developing Phantom Pregnancy symptoms, hence the "Your tongue got my sister pregnant" line. That, coupled with the incest rumor (which was not strictly speaking true), led her to take her own life.
To be fair, dad/daughter is probably a worse combo than Aunt/nephew (or potentially Uncle/niece now), it still is interesting how most folks can stomach incest in GoT better than in other types of movies/shows. Not saying they're thrilled about it, but the level of disgust is noticeably different.
There's an underlying question here, Who do you think came back to the girl after the hypnosis? The ahjussi version that she met or her father version that knows everything but will keep the secret to himself? Like it said the hypnosis could go wrong and the look in his face when they hug is intriguing.
This movie broke me when I 1st watched it. It stayed with me for days and could not shake it off. That ending haunts me because your not sure if the hypnosis worked. Is he smiling cuz he does not remember or is it a menacing smile because he remembers and has to keep up the ruse. Either way it’s all fucked up and it just broke my brain.
The actress playing Mido really have that look and ways with her that felt like despite being a grown woman, she still a little childlike and innocent. Someone you want to take care of.
The french (canadian) movie Marketa refers to at the end is called «Incendies» from Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Arrival, Dune, Bladerunner 2049, etc.). It’s a movie I only needed to watch once and never again.
This is the most dedicated and fd up Vengeance movie of all time. Entire life dedicated to torturing and break this person that told on them and caused his sister to kill herself (while trying to teach his perspective). Jamie Lannister never had it this bad. The violence and hallway scene is of course what so many future shows borrowed from.
its such a good movie but its so disturbing, i always tell people they need to watch this if they havn't, but i give them a fair warning that its really disturbing. I dont care for horror movies and stuff those dont really do anything for me, but a psychological movie like this really gets me, that hallway scene is really what got me to watch it, people always talking about it, so i went in thinking this would be a martial arts film but it wasnt really.
btw, the movie Marketa mentions is Incendies. It's a really good movie and despite the twist she mentioned it has more to offer but isn't for the faint of heart because it is so raw and real and depicted, without making it clear, a civil war back in Lebanon.
This movie was relieased in 2003, 20 years ago and still great. I recommend you try Korean movie called "1987", this is one of the best korean movie since it is based on 100% real story.
The movie you are talking about at the end is Incendies. It's not French, it's from Quebec (Canada), and it's actually based on a play by Wajdi Mouawad. The movie was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who did Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner, Dune.... Definitely a mind-f*ck, must watch movie!
the bad guy only has vengeance to live for. so when he finally got his vengeance, there's really no reason to live and we see how tormented he was all along that he even can't get through one elevator ride without the thought of killing himself and since there's no more vengeance to keep him going, he just killed himself, right then and there. he's the original Gus Fring.
Just for you to know, 1) the dude from the intro was in love with his dog, 2) the actor who plays the protagonist auditioned to play the bag guy, 3) the actor who plays the bad guy, has a very nice voice, so the creator of the movie wanted to have a scene with him speaking on the phone, 4) the actor who plays the protagonist actually had to eat alive those squids and he felt so bad ( bc he is Buddhist) that after that he went and prayed, 5) the actress who plays the young woman, went to the audition with a knife, 6) the actor who plays the protagonist actually hit his head in the scene with the young woman when he woke up. It was a blooper and they kept it.

I'd be really fascinated to read a psychological study on Pat. I have paused the video just before the thumbnail was taken; I'm pretty sure. It is the moment when Oh Dae-Su is about to cut off his own tongue. Mickey and Marketa share my reaction, which is that theh are cringing in a way that almost looks like they're trying to prevent themselves from vomiting. Meanwhile Pat is leaning back, hands folded behind his head, elbows wide, grinning like he has won the lottery. Yet if there were even a HINT of a ghost, demon, alien, or other supernatural, paranormal, or maybe even just kind of weird entity his whole head would be HIDDEN behind one of those couch cushions. It's wild.
You guys should watch the follow up to this movie. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. It's not a direct sequel but it has the same director and more amazing cinematography. It's a great revenge story. The main actor here is the villain of that movie. It's incredible.
1:43 It is! Streaming licenses have made great films inaccessible otherwise. Hmm, their prudish reaction completely misses the Greek tragedy roots. Never heard of Oedipus Rex & Apollo (hence why Lee looks ageless despite being Dae-su's school peer)? The ending isn't as clear cut. There is the implication that he remembers. Just because a story makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean it isn't an important film to watch, reflect on, and discuss. Dae-su was was a careless and indiscreet youth who whose thoughtless gossip resulted in a young woman's death. At the same time, Lee's revenge, however effective, couldn't undo the tragedy of Soo-ah's death. Then of course we have everything the Greek tragedy teaches us.

The whole vengeance trilogy is wild as hell but so good.
Just because the twist is uncomfortable to go through, it doesn't make the story or the movie "bad." lol
The incest in Game of Thrones didn't make you question why people loved it, did it?
This is a story about a shit guy trying to get revenge for his own imprisonment, all the while EXPERIENCING the revenge of someone else he's wronged, and only finding out when it's too late to stop it.
💯 ☑
Well, like...consent is kind of a big deal. And...not sure if you had considered this, but its a violation when someone takes away your consent.
People tend to like digestible "disturbing" cinema or topics that they can tear up to or get a little grossed out by, people dislike things that actually cause discomfort or are actually disturbing.
@@MaynardsSpaceship Whats are you talking about?
Yess omg! I second this!
"Smile and the world smiles with you, weep and you weep alone"
Him crying but yet smiling at the end can be interpreted 2 ways:
1) Hypnosis works (he doesnt know thats his daughter) and live his life in love with her. His daughter being oblivious to the truth.
2) Hypnosis didn't work and he will live with the truth and suffering, have no way to tell his daughter due to sacrificing his own tongue and be with his daughter in order for her to live a "happy life"
Either way, he is a monster.
I however wouldnt use the word "won"
Neither won, both lost everything.
@@gavinferguson2938 100% too bad, ot went over the reactors head lol
30:03 The movie Marketa is talking about is not a French but a Canadian 2010 movie called Incendies, directed by Denis Villeneuve (the same guy who directed Dune last year). It's a great movie about the Lebanese (not Algerian) civil war.
I was wondering if that was the movie she was talking about. I haven't seen it yet but I definitely knew a little bit about the twist lowkey.
Mikey's face at 28:41 is killing me.
His face was the funniest part of the reaction!
His whole body LOL
27:02 this part lol
I like how the thugs in the hallway fight attack him even when his back is turned. You almost never see that in these type of films.
You think that sex scene is awkward now!? Try rewatching the movie, haha!
i REALLY LOVE you guys for doing this movie 😭.
i watched it alone and i have never ever felt messed up like that in my life. the second time i told my friends to watch it cause i wanna see their reaction. my friends are the type of people who never shuts up while watching a movie. but "Oldboy" made them shut their mouth from THAT scene right until the end.
the first person to say something only uttered one word: "fuuuuuucccc*kk"
What i got from the ending is that de su tried to erase his memory so that he can stay away from her but she found him anyway , also at the very ending scene he starts smilling but you kinda see his smile fading away into misery which means that it didn’t work and he still has his memory of everything….kinda fucked up but it means that he will probably leave her and stay away from her life ….thank you and great reaction by the way
The French movie Marketa is talking about is "Incendies". It's directed by Denis Villeneuve .
That's a fantastic movie!!!
They should do it it's such a brilliant movie
Don't worry guys, the claw hammer to the teeth and the scissor to the tongue will rent free in your mind for a while. Fortunately, this movie can be enjoyed only for once (due to its unique plot twist and its gore jump scare)
This movie was a perfect of example of “you will not believe what happens next” the entire way through.
The French movie Marketa is thinking about is INCENDIES. Its not actually French but French Canadian and the last French language film of DUNE director Denis Villenuve before he started making English language films
Oh my god. Always a pleasure to see people react to "Old Boy". One of the best movies ever.
From the moment I saw the thumbnail I was like "please don't be the remake, please don't be the remake".
I'm sure there's a circle in hell where they promise you oldboy, then show you the remake and then erase your memory and do it again the next day, for all of eternity.
Best South Korea Movie TOP5
1. Old Boy (2003)
2. Memories of Murder (2003)
3. Parasite (2019)
4. Train to Busan (2016)
5. I saw the devil (2010)
200% I have to go back and watch Memories of Murder and I saw the devil because it's been a long time. I really enjoyed Train to Busan. After the movie finished it took me several minutes to catch my breath.
4:34 "is that his daughter?" is crazy funny that you ask that hahaha
For those wondering, the movie Marketa was talking about is …
[SPOILER WARNING]
.
.
.
Incendies. It was actually directed by Denis Villeneuve, who did Blade Runner 2049 and Dune.
aw what the fuck. i vowed to watch all of villeneuve’s movies ever since i saw sicario but that’s the one that i have not had a chance to see yet until now. fuck, now i know the plot, which is horrible, so thanks i guess? i definitely won’t be seeing that thing now
Both Blade Runner and Dune are Masterpieces you cant compare it to regular Movies. Blade Runner 2049 is my Favorite movie of all time!
Damn
oh yea incendies
abu tarek you sneaky bastard
@@jefplus some vow lol watch it anyways
you all need to open your minds...old boy is a masterpiece, incendies too ( from denis villeneuve a french canadian ) is critically acclaimed. and not all film have to finish in happy ending with the hero walking in the sunset.
People watching Game of Thrones: I Hope the Nephew gets with the Aunty!
People watching Old Boy: Nooooooooooooooooo! haha
@by that logic Good point
What an incredible movie!!! I loved watching you talk about this masterpiece
There's an underlying question here,
Who do you think came back to the girl after the hypnosis? The ahjussi version that she met or her father version that knows everything but will keep the secret to himself? Like it said the hypnosis could go wrong and the look in his face when they hug is intriguing.
"He turned into that?!" Three minutes in, first supermassive facepalm. The dude on the right is pretty slow.
Oldboy is a masterpiece.
“Is that his daughter?” Well…I mean, your question is definitely going to be confirmed 😬
Old Boy will make you say Oh Boy
Fun facts about the remake: It's directed by Spike Lee and stars Elizabeth Olsen
For me, Thats the best plot twist from all time
This is the most dedicated and fd up Vengeance movie of all time.
Marketa movie: Canadian movie, Incendies, from Dune's director Danis Villanueve
Bro you guys did not get the ending the monster lives, and he remember everything he hypnosis failed that was the crazy mind bending twist
btw, the movie Marketa mentions is Incendies.
Oldboy being locked up in that room for years sounds like me
Director Park Chan wook's new work, is a masterpiece. You must check it out when it comes out in theaters..
I hope we see The Chaser or Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance next (I actually enjoyed this movie way more than Oldboy).
The Chaser would be great, but for me Na Hong Jin's best film is The Yellow Sea.
and silenced 2011 although i don't think they can set through it
@@KyleS3m3noff The Yellow Sea is excellent.
@@SadPeterPan1977 it really, really is. Hong Jin's track record as a director is absolutely stellar as well... it's tough to pick a top film from him. But I keep returning to TYS more than the others.
I remember watching the twist and started screaming out of my lungs NO...NO...NO....and then quickly realised my neighbours will probably kick the door down thinking I hurt myself really bad so I started screaming Nooo.....in silent for another 5 minutes before resuming the film 😂😂😂😂
Yo Pat's revalation during the discussion had me dying LMFAO!!!!!!!!
This was so funny to watch lmfaooo. You guys reactions was the exact same one i had when i first saw it. Type of movie that stays w/ you for days
I enjoyed watching it. Old Boy movies feel different every time I watch them.
First revenge to the man who started the rumor
Second revenge to the man who spread the rumor
Final revenge to the man who let go of his sister
The first good movie you guys watch in along time in this channel.
6:45 있다

I will never forget that one shot hallway fight scene. To this day the best fight choreography I’ve ever seen. I love it soooooooo much.
It's wild.
Now you have to see Martyrs (French Movie)
You guys should watch the follow up to this movie. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. It's not a direct sequel but it has the same director and more amazing cinematography. It's a great revenge story. The main actor here is the villain of that movie. It's incredible.
The movie Marketa is talking about at the end is 'Incendies', awesome movie by Denis Villenueve.
No we loved it but it fucked us up lol
Everyone disgusted and Pat smiling is very on brand
A masterpiece is a masterpiece over time
Then of course we have everything the Greek tragedy teaches us.
it's insane how slow pat is on everything he watches and reacts to. like wtf
"And you're about to ruin my water feature, don't you dare! Ohhhhh no the Fuck you didn't!" - 26:15 .... A pretty reasonable argument lol

It's possibly the GREATEST revenge story ever put to film!! We assume Oh Dae-su is the protagonist, but in actuality, he's the antagonist, and Lee Woo-jin is the protagonist!!
Such a phenomenal film, I've watched it over a dozen times and it never gets old!!
This is a master piece! That's all.
Great timing for me with the 20th anniversary remaster in theaters last week, love seeing people react to this masterpiece
They also have anime voice actors in the dub of this movie lol. Crispin Freeman killed it as the villan as he always does. Lol! 😅😅
“You have strange taste in men.” Oh boy, you don’t know the half of it, but you will…you will.
The fight scene in the hallway is so epic and in the American version they absolutely butchered it. I feel like the director didn’t understand that it was a hallway. I turned it off after that. I was sooo pissed. The American version is garbage…
Park Chan Wook also made the handmaiden 😏 which y’all should definitely watch cause that is one of my fav movies ever 💯 PLEEEEEEASE
People always forget that he murdered his wife for his revenge also lol.
The movie Marqueta is talking about is named Incendies from 2010. It's about a Lebanon mother moving to Canada and then when she died she leaves a letter to her twin children... Definitely a watchable movie
If you want another Choi Min Sik, yet more grosser, try I saw the Devil. Oldboy is lite in comparison. If you want another Choi Min Sik, but not in the gross type, try watching The Admiral Roaring Currents. But I think you saw this already, If I'm not mistaken
Ok, SOO... i first watched this movie when i was seeing this dude. I didn't know a thing about this movie but we always had a good time watching like, an array of movies i guess. He was a communication student at the time (film and tv student you could say). We watched this and it was a roller-coaster of emotions tbh. When the twist came up i jumped from the couch and started screaming at the tv at the top of my lungs just like NOOOOO, and i turned around and i saw him laughing at me, i said there's no fkng way, and he was like shruging and telling me to keep watching. It was fucked up but in an impressive holy shit this movie way. Long story short, we kept seeing each other and we've been together for close to 6 years now. It was fucked up but in a you have to see this shit that very well done and fucked up as well. So yeah, I guess i don't know where i'm going with this but yeah. That happened, that was my reaction and context to my personal experience with this movie. Well done, fucked up, probably wouldn't see it on my own again. 10/10 cinematography
In his brother's point of view - they both know that fact but still did that cause they genuinely love eachother and it isn't forced. You can't decide who are you gonna fall in love with.
Who are we to judge and decide what's wrong or right for them.
It's his mindset.
For a dark a second I thought they were reacting to the American remake lol
